Welcome to Crealdé School of Art OUR TWO OTHER LOCATIONS

Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680.

Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp.

In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a changing variety of multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features more than 60 pieces of original art. Admission to the galleries and gardens is always free.

The Sage Project Phase 2: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories April 12 – August 31

This is the second phase of an important Heritage Center documentary to preserve and understand local history from the perspective of a select group of oldest residents in Winter Park’s historic African American community. Phase II showcases 17 new portraits and living histories of Hannibal Square’s most senior residents — now in their 80s and 90s — who are natives or longtime residents of the African American west side Winter Park community. The oral interviews were lovingly captured by Hannibal Square Heritage Center Historians Fairolyn Livingston and Mary Daniels, both longtime residents as well.

The exquisite portraits of these elders were captured by documentary photographer Peter Schreyer. Adding to the existing Sage Project permanent collection that dates back to 2012, “These histories, however personal, have a familiarity that resonates with residents of African American communities around the country,” explains Heritage Center Chief Historian Livingston. The memories and stories of elders from one of the nation’s oldest African-American townships will be on exhibition at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

FELLOWSHIP AND STUDIO ARTISTS May 10 – August 3 Opening reception: Friday, May 10, 7 – 9 pm Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Emerging artists from the Crealdé Painting and Drawing program share their talent in work produced during their fellowships. The Crealdé Fellowship Program, since 1978, and the Studio Artist Program, since 1996, has mentored an average of 25 students per year through this work-study exchange. This exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany, Curator of Exhibitions.

For nearly four decades, this summer social, hosted by Vincent Sansone, Ceramics Studio Manager and Senior Faculty Member, brings smart shoppers and collectors to the main campus to browse through hundreds of one-of-a-kind ceramic cups, bowls, and other vessels handmade by Crealdé instructors, artists, students, and friends. As the tradition goes, buy a cup or goblet and it will be filled. Proceeds benefit upgrades to the Ceramics studio and kilns. 7-10 p.m. Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11.

Through the exploration of color, expression, inspiration, and various art materials and methods - Crealdé School of Art celebrates the tenth year of artwork produced in the Senior Art Program under the guidance of faculty member, Fabiola Hansen. The Senior Art Program is an opportunity for the participating seniors to learn new art styles and techniques. Established in 2000, the Senior Art Program is made possible by the United Arts' Learning Grant and the City of Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency.

Since 1982, Crealdé has presented an Annual exhibition featuring works of art from the 400 Summer ArtCamp participants, ages 4 – 17.

The exhibition includes collaborative and individual works in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. It is curated by Crealdé’s Summer ArtCamp Faculty.

This favorite annual exhibition features some of the year’s best student work in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and fiber arts. Works are selected by Crealdé’s program managers and awarded by a guest juror. Opening reception: Friday, June 7, 8 – 9:30 pm, following the Annual Membership Meeting and award ceremony

REFUND/WITHDRAWAL POLICY CLASSES Refunds must be requested one week prior to the first class meeting. Transfers and withdrawals for class credit must be requested before the first class meeting and are subject to a $20 processing fee. Transfers, refunds and credits are not available after the first class meeting. Class credits expire after one year. These policies apply regardless of attendance status.

WORKSHOPS All workshop registration deadlines are at least one week prior to the workshop date.* Registration deadlines for visiting artists workshops will vary. HERITAGE CENTER NEWS StoryQuilters Quilting Bee StoryQuilters Quilting Bee is a diverse group of dedicated fiber artists making quilts together at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center on the last Saturday and Sunday of the month between 10am -2pm. Under the guidance of Lauren Austin, Heritage Center’s resident quilt artist (thatblackgirlart.com/), our group includes experienced and beginner quilters working on individual and group projects. We have sewing machines, supplies, tools and knowhow to share! We invite you to come with work, ideas and curiosity! We love to tell stories and enjoy each others’ art. Our motto is DIYWH - do it yourself with help! Quilting is for everyone. At StoryQuilters, the only rule is to have fun.

Now & Then: Hannibal Square Walking Tour with Chief Historian Fairolyn Livingston Join Chief Historian Fairolyn Livingston on a guided tour through formerly segregated Hannibal Square and learn the vibrant history of what was once a self-sustaining community. End at the Heritage Center with The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park. 10 – 11:30 am, Third Saturday of every month. $10 adults, $5 students.

Juneteenth Celebration (Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19,1865, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.) The Heritage Center Juneteenth Celebration will feature performances and storytelling. There will be live music including steel drums, food, and more. This celebration will be free and open to the public and is provided in partnership between The Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Winter Park Public LIbrary, Axiom Gallery, and The Winter Park Community Center. Join us June 22 at the Winter Park Community Center, more details to come.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres 6 Weeks Wednesdays, 5:45 – 8:45 pm, Studio 7, class starts July 3rd Come learn the concepts for basic and advanced jewelry fabrication. In this class, students will become familiar with essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Students will be given the instruction and tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry. Copper materials will be provided for use in class.

Students wanting to work in silver should bring their own supply.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Sunday, August 11, 12 – 5 pm, Studio 7 Come learn the technique of round and oval shaped precision bezels for jewelry. Through instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, each participant will create a traditional bezel and permanent setting for a cabochon stone. All materials are provided and tools are available for use during class.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres 6 Weeks Mondays, 5:45 – 8:45 pm, Studio 7, class starts June 10th Discover the ancient art of relief sculpture on copper known as Repoussé. Work with the metal directly without molds or stamps, to learn the creative process of metal embossing. Create raised designs by pushing and shaping malleable metal. This technique has been used for making wall sculptures, copper tiles, religious book covers and icons, decorative fireplaces, jewelry and many other indoor or outdoor relief sculptures. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Sunday, June 23, 12 – 5 pm, Studio 7 Explore metal folding and forming as a unique process for jewelry-making. Participants will learn to design and the precision techniques necessary to make a series of small-scale samples for sculptural jewelry. This course will include equipment safety, design, material preparation, design execution. Create dimensional forms out of flat copper sheets without molds or stamps. Note: this class is fairly physically intensive, and calls for nimble dexterity and significant manual strength. Skill level: All Members $100 • Non-members $120

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Sunday, August 4, 12 – 5 pm, Studio 7 Cold connections and riveting can be creatively applied to metalsmithing, mixed media, found objects and jewelry. It’s an easy way to marry different kinds of materials together, like wood to metal or plastic. No soldering or gluing is required with this method. Skill level: All Members $100 • Non-members $120

WKJ36 Fused Glass 101: Kiln-Formed Glass

Instructor: Robert Lennox Saturday, June 8, 10 am – 2 pm, Studio 7 Saturday, August 17, 10 am – 2 pm, Studio 7 Enter the cutting-edge world of fused glass! In this half-day workshop, students learn studio glass techniques including cutting, fusing, annealing, slumping and more. Safety in the studio will also be covered. A portable computer-controlled kiln engineered for glass is provided so that students may gain experience loading and firing a kiln. Students will design and fabricate two pieces: a jewelry pendant to wear, and a fused glass suncatcher. Beginners will gain a variety of new studio skills while more advanced students with stained glass experience will learn how to break free of lead lines! The projects are explained step-by-step and based on pieces from children’s classes … from plates and bowls to animal rattles and lanterns. Come play with clay!

TD172 Handbuilding Like the Ancients

Instructor: Doug Bringle 8 weeks Mondays, 7-9 pm, Studio 4 Fridays, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, Studio 4 Humans have been firing clay for over 20,000 years, leaving artifacts that provide us glimpses into ancient times and ways. From Mesopotamia to Japan, from the shores of Lake Titicaca to the slopes of Mt. Olympus, clay vessels and figures, tiles and tablets preserve and suggest those long ago days. Let’s build on that clay legacy by creating pots which harken back to ancient times and yet look to the future. All levels welcome.

Discussions about design and the finished pieces are a part of each class. If a base for the piece is needed, that becomes part of the discussion as well. Instructor: Vince Sansone 8 weeks Wednesdays, 7-9 pm, Studio 4 An excellent choice for those who are seeking a continuation of skills already learned and to develop personal style and consistency. Working in series and sets is emphasized, as are refining, finishing, and glazing.

Demonstrations meet the needs of each student. Prerequisite: Intermediate Ceramics and Continuing Wheel Throwing or similar experience.

Instructor: Vince Sansone Sunday, June 16 and June 30, 1-5 pm both days, Studio 7 Here’s a chance to sit around the table and play. Learn to use the pinch forming method to make small heads. Manipulate the clay from inside the form to enhance facial features before closing it up.

Design a base for the head as you make it. Day 2 will be dedicated to decorating and glazing. Skill level: All Members $70 • Non-Members $70

ADULT-CHILD WORKSHOP Mountains of Clay

Instructor: Donne Bitner 8 Weeks Mondays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Studio 1B Explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Sample various drawing and painting techniques using different media, including watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Most supplies are provided.

Instructor: Dennis Schmalstig 8 Weeks Fridays, 10 am – 12 pm, Studio 1A Develop skills for measuring proportions and angles, drawing tones to show light and volume, perspective and composition. The goal is to learn techniques to draw realistically and develop perceptual awareness. Skill level: Beginner Members $220 • Non-members $240

PD149 Beginning Acrylics

Instructor: David Hunter 8 Weeks Tuesdays, 7 – 9 pm, Studio 1B Explore the methods, materials, and tools involved with acrylic painting. Learn techniques used to produce a finished acrylic painting, from rough sketch to final finishing touches, including the use of various brushes, palette knives, canvases, clay boards and final coating to protect the finished image. Supplies will be discussed at the first class.

PD157 Oil Painting I

Instructor: Beth Pendleton 6 Weeks Sundays, 2 – 5 pm, Studio 1A Students will learn basic techniques of the alla prima (direct) method of applying oil paint. In addition to paint application and brushwork, students will learn how to mix color using a split complementary palette. Working from still life setups, students will complete one study each week to explore techniques for rendering glass, ceramic, metal, and organic objects. Instruction will focus on teaching students to see and copy value and intensity changes in color. There will be demonstrations of techniques, along with discussions about methods, materials and supplies used in oil painting. Supply list will be emailed to students upon registration. PD263 Urban Sketching: Tips and Techniques

Instructor: Thomas Thorspecken 6 Weeks Sundays, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm, Studio 1B Learn to sketch from subject to the environment. Classroom sessions will focus on sketching clothed models and progress towards sketching the model and classroom environment. Learn how to incorporate storytelling into your sketches in our location sessions. These trips to local venues will challenge you to use your sketchbook the way a photojournalist uses a camera. Join us and support our mission founded on the idea that the arts are for everyone, and everyone has a story worth telling. Your membership helps us serve the community with outreach programs for special populations, scholarships, educational exhibitions and public art. Membership revenue maintains the affordability of classes and workshops.

Crealdé membership allows you to actively participate in the arts community with benefits such as discounted registration fees and invitations to gallery receptions, special lectures, and members-only events.

It is easy to join! An individual membership costs only $40 per year and $65 provides membership benefits to an entire household! Membership levels at $100 and above earn additional benefits. You may join by selecting the membership option on our website or call our office – your membership benefits begin immediately. You can become a member even if you are not taking a class.
