Crealdé School of Art Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday– Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Digital & Film Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year; youth class sessions are six weeks, plus there are Summer ArtCamp sessions.

In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a changing variety of visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features more than 60 pieces of original art.

Admission to the galleries and gardens is always free.

Paintings by Richard D. Colvin depict indoor and outdoor scenes taken from his life in Central Florida, mostly Lake County. The real subject in Colvin’s work, narrative content notwithstanding, is the action of light upon matter expressed in color, reflection and shadow. Instructor: Geoffry Sprague FALL I, FALL II Thursday, 7-9 pm, Studio 7 Papier-mâché has been used for millennia to create ornamental and functional objects. Explore various materials, recipes and techniques for making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. Although this class has no prerequisites, prior sculpting experience is helpful.

In this beginner class, students learn the basic steps of quilting. The class covers fabric choices, quilting supplies, rotary cutting and more. Learn a unique and fun technique for fusible machine appliqué, which will be used to create a beautiful wall quilt. Learn to select the right fabrics, prepare the background and appliqué pieces, fuse the raw edge appliqué and finish the quilt. FA105 The Art of Papermaking

Instructor: Hye Shin FALL I, FALL II Wednesday, 10 am-Noon, Studio 7 Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, and junk mail.

Use mold and deckle techniques to make unique paper. Molding, paper sculpture and basic bookbinding techniques will be taught. Make your own cards, envelopes, 2-D and 3-D paper art.

WORKSHOPS WKF05 Contemporary Papermaking with Hanji – NEW

Instructor: Hye Shin FALL I Saturday, Oct. 8 10 am-5 pm, Studio 7 Experience the spirit of Korean culture by learning the history and techniques of hanji, a traditional Korean paper made from the paper mulberry tree. Hanji is known for its long and strong fibers and has a variety of applications such as windows, books, artwork and clothes.

Learn to create thin mulberry papers and 3-D art forms. Each student will make a standard sheet of hanji using double-molding and papers with Hye Shin, hanji paper inclusions. Most materials provided. Students should bring towel and inclusions such as onion skin, flower petals, dried fern leaves, gold and silver sprinkles).

She completed her BFA and MFA in Fiber Arts from Ewha Womans University, South Korea, plus an additional MFA in textiles from The Henty Rodford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University. She recently completed public art pieces for the Historic Sanford Welcome Center and Florida Institute of Technology. Shin participates in group and solo exhibitions internationally. WKF04 Powertex Figurine (Fabric Sculpting)

Instructor: Regine Dossche FALL I Saturday, Oct. 22, 9 am-1 pm, Studio 7 Making a fabric sculpture allows complete freedom of expression in creating figurines that have their own individuality and presence. First a wire armature is constructed “mummified” and then “dressed” and draped with fabrics dipped into the fabric hardener Powertex. Step-by-step, transform armatures into unique sculptures, in the color and technique of your choice.

Beginner or advanced artists will love this workshop.

Members $125 • Non-members $145 Regine Dossche is a Belgian artist and workshop instructor, now living in Orlando. She started as a watercolor artist until she came in contact with Powertex and a new world unfolded, as she was able to create figurines, sculptures, textures on canvas and even jewelry. WKF01 Introductory Long Arm Quilting Workshop

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell FALL I Sept. 24, Saturday,11 am-5 pm, Heritage Center In this one-day demonstration and hands-on workshop, students learn the basics of longarm quilting, including how to put the backing, batting and top onto the quilting machine. Participants also learn to stitch in the ditch, and meandering and simple free motion patterns.

WKF02 Longarm Quilting: Beyond Basics

FALL I Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Oct. 22, Saturday, 11 am-5 pm, Heritage Center Freehand designs are fun and easy to do and give quilting a very custom look. In this hands-on workshop, students work on appliqué quilts and use different free-hand, stippling, echo quilting and fill-in patterns. Also “overall” free-hand patterns will be discussed and created.

Members $100 • Non-members $120 After working more than 25 years in social service, Sherry Goode-Carmell opened a home-based sewing and quilting studio and has been teaching all areas of sewing and quilting, as well as being a longarm quilter for more than six years. She has made many dozens of quilts and longarmed even more. Commissions include the Seminole County Centennial Celebration. She was the chairperson for the Geneva Quilt Festival and is a member of many sewing and quilt guilds.

JEWELRY & GLASS JEWELRY & GLASS CLASSES JG103 Intro to Jewelry Design and Fabrication

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Fall I: Saturday, Starts September 17, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 7, 4 Weeks Fall II: Saturday, Starts November 26, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 7, 4 Weeks This is an introductory class for basic and advanced jewelry fabrication. Learn essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Class includes tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry as well as copper materials for practicing during class. Students wanting to work in silver should bring their own. Fall I classes will skip Saturday, October 8 and will end on October 15.

JG102 Art of Stained Glass I

Stefan Alexandres creates artwork using ancient techniques – no molds or stamps, just hand tools.

From 1964 to 1972 he apprenticed in metal arts in the traditional ways, as guided through the organized guilds of Greece. He draws inspiration for his metalwork from history, mythology, folk tales and real life. Website: stefanalexandres.com.

The first class begins with fundamental instructions to make metal threads and overview the process with samples, demos and hands-projects.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres FALL II Sunday, Nov. 13 Noon-5 pm, Studio 7 This workshop focuses on the pleasure of including gems in jewelry with the simplest setting technique.

With demos and step-by-step instructions, the participants will be guided to create a precision bezel and learn how to set the stone. To explore the process in depth and become familiar with the special tools, students will practice fabricating round and oval bezels. Students may choose to bring their own supply of gems and silver.

Members $110 • Non-members $130 Brandon Price is from Akron, Ohio, and began his glass career more than 13 years ago at Bowling Green State University under the tutelage of Robert “Bud” Hurlstone. His love of glass-blowing afforded him the opportunity to work and study in 43 states and on three continents, from a glass studio set on a barge in the Amsterdam canals to the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. He has studied in quiet mountains in South Africa, and performed on the rocking plains of Tennessee for the Bonnaroo music festival. His partnership with David Sandidge over the past decade has led to the culmination of his International Hot Glass gallery and studio, housed in the Artegon Marketplace. Abstract and figurative forms will be constructed and prepared for kiln firing. Simple moldmaking will be introduced toward the end of the session.

Learn how to apply cement creating a durable surface for outdoor art. The art work will be finished using colorful stains and sealers. This collaborative work will go on display in the Contemporary Sculpture Garden.

WKYA31 Portrait Drawing Workshop

Instructor: Wendi Swanson FALL II Sunday, Nov. 20, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 1B Working from a live model, students will learn how to visualize light and shadows on the face, with an emphasis on creating a likeness. There will be core instruction on the placement of facial features and anatomy of the head. Students will also learn how to break down a complex subject like the human face into basic shapes to create a realistic portrait influenced by the way of the “old masters”.

Students will leave with a new found knowledge and excitement for Portrait Drawing! Workshop for young artist 13 to 17 years old.

Instructor: Milton Heiberg Fall I: Sunday, Oct. 2, 9 am-3 pm Registration deadline Sept. 25 Jessie Brock Community Center, Winter Garden Spend a full day photographing the birds of Lake Apopka with lifelong bird photography instructor Milton Heiberg. Wander the new Lake Apopka Loop Trail, expanding over the north shore of Lake Apopka with more than 10 miles of 360-degree vistas, including ponds, canal waterways and the shores of the lake itself. Ever since the Lake Apopka North Shore restoration, this area has become a birder’s paradise.

We will have continuous photo-ops of many species, including wading birds, passerines, gallinules, raptors and especially osprey carrying or eating a fish. Lunch will be provided at the Lakeside Pavilion. Workshop includes classroom preparation September 29, 6-8 pm, and a photo review on October 6, 6-8 pm.
