Hannibal Square Heritage Center

Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established

by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation. Classes held at the Heritage Center are marked with the HC icon.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit art organization established in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 125 studio courses and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, glass, jewelry and fiber arts for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five sessions per year.

Since 2010, Crealdé, in partnership with the City of Winter Garden, offers a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.

Recognizing established artists from Florida, the nation and beyond

Hannibal Square Heritage Center Exploring heritage and folklore through the visual arts and humanities

Through January 18 The Sum of Many Parts: Quiltmakers in Contemporary America and Mid-Florida Quiltmakers

Crealdé is one of the first U.S. hosts for this internationally traveled exhibition of quilts, which was originally sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and toured in China before coming to the U.S. Artists with diverse backgrounds and paths that led them to quiltmaking include Native American quilter Bonnie LeBeau from South Dakota; Erick Wolfmeyer of Iowa, whose quilts are inspired by the Midwest landscape; and Louisiana Bendolph from Alabama, following the tradition of Gee’s Bend quilts Hannibal Square Heritage Center also will host this two-venue exhibition, which features Mid-Florida Quiltmakers, curated by folklorist and author Dr. Kristin Congdon. This juried exhibition comprises 15 stunning quilts, variously stitched by quilters who have made Florida their home.

February 5 – April 2 Art Legends of Orange County, Florida: Grady Kimsey

Progressions, Works by Former Students

Reflecting the spectrum of Grady Kimsey’s mentorship, this exhibition will feature select works by the artist exhibited alongside current work by his former students, including Paula Peterson, Paula Pell, Henry Sinn, Randall Smith, Cheryl Smith, Kyle, Pam Coffman, Jay Spalding, Carlos Richmond, Melissa Kimsey-Hickman, Greg Freeman, Cindy Freeman Marty Whipple and Lynn Warnicke; at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

February 5 – April 2 Art Legends of Orange County, Florida: Bill Jenkins – The Inspired Paintings of Crealdé’s Founder A selection of paintings by William Sterling Jenkins (1909-1996), Crealdé founder, artist and philanthropist will be featured at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

April 15 – June 25 Tom Rankin: Sacred Landscapes of the South

For more than 25 years, North Carolina photographer Tom Rankin has documented rural churches and their surrounding sacred landscape.

This exhibition of large-scale, film-based, black-andwhite photographs shows his artistic interpretation and studies of the ever-changing landscape during his repeated visits to the same locations. Rankin is the former director of Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies, and a current professor of the practice of art and documentary studies, and director of the MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts.

The opening events begin with a 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 16, reception at the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery on the Crealdé main campus. The following night, Tom Rankin lectures on his documentary photography of the American South in partnership with the Cornell Fine Arts Museum; 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Bush Auditorium, Rollins College, preceded by a reception from 5-6:30 p.m. at Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Free.

Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Grady Kimsey, “Free Bird” This three-gallery retrospective exhibition is part of a 2016 collaboration with multiple museums to honor pre-Disney leaders in the arts (19321982). Grady Kimsey is one of Central Florida’s most accomplished artists and most popular arts educators. A sculptor, ceramicist and painter, with eight decades of life experiences, Kimsey was awarded his BFA in 1950 from the University of Tennessee and his master’s in education in 1969 from Rollins College. He retired after a 25-year career at Seminole Community College, and his work is in the collections of Florida’s top museums and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. The opening event begins with a 6-8 p.m. reception at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center and will continue at the Crealdé main campus from 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 5.

The Right of Passage, Works from the 1940s to the Present

This exhibition will feature Kimsey’s most recent work and his older work dating to 1949; at The Alice & William Jenkins Gallery and the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery on the Crealdé main campus.

Celebrating the art of Crealdé’s community

Through January 16 Florida Sculpture Guild Presents La Creatura

Crealdé hosts a juried exhibition of imaginative works by established and emerging Florida Sculptors Guild members, using clay, glass, mosaic, wood, metal, found objects and other mixed media to depict figurative and abstract creatures in human and animal form.

April 8 – July 16 The Florida Painters Return to Crealdé

The Florida Painters began with a Crealdé School of Art plein-air workshop in 2008 held by artist and mentor Tom Sadler. The group vowed to meet to paint as often as possible, and continue the support and camaraderie, which helped each of them develop as individual artists. While the group’s focus continues to be painting en plein air, the subjects have expanded to include urban scenes, still lifes and the human figure. Opening reception: 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 8, in the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery. Free.

Crealdé Traveling Exhibitions Through January 21 St. Augustine at 450: A Crealdé Documentary Project

Ten photographers captured the oldest city in the nation on the occasion of its 450th anniversary, exploring St. Augustine’s history, preservation efforts and place as a tourist destination, college town and home to a diverse population. Rotunda Gallery of the St. Johns County Administration Building, 500 San Sebastian Way, St. Augustine. Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Through January 29 The Art of Mentorship II

The diverse art work represented in this exhibition reflects the strong and rewarding partnership between Crealdé instructors and their students at the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden. Art in Public Places Gallery, Winter Garden City Hall. Free.

Through February 21 100 Years of Hannibal Square, Historic and Contemporary Photographs of West Winter Park

Hannibal Square Heritage Center’s permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories collected from the African-American community are on display, along with documentary portraits taken by Peter Schreyer in 2012 for The Sage Project: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories.

Special Events January 16 Crealdé Fifth Annual A Night of Fire

The whole campus comes alive after dark for the fifth annual A Night of Fire. Tour the Crealdé studios and galleries, participate in art workshops and demonstrations including a bronze pour, a gas kiln firing, raku firing and a light painting photography display over the lake. There will be painting demonstrations in the studios, too. Enjoy live music, refreshments and storytelling around the fire. Food from the grill is provided by Millers Hardware. 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Crealdé main campus, Winter Park. Free.

March 12 Fifth Annual Crealdé Free Family Art Festival

Join in a day of hands-on art, activities and exploration, including pony rides, face-painting, a bounce house and refreshments. Get a jump on registration for Summer ArtCamp (open to ages 4 and older), and receive a one-day-only special discount. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Crealdé main campus and sculpture gardens. Free.

April 30 Seventh Annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk & Urban Art Festival

The annual festival celebrates culture and diversity through art and music. More than 25 Florida artists offer their works for sale, including members of the original Florida Highwaymen and the B-Side Artists collective. There’s music by the Porchdogs Cajun and Zydeco Band and Orisirisi African Folklore. A “Kidfolk” workshop culminates in a public parade. Food offered by local vendors. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Hannibal Square Heritage Center. Free.

FIBER ARTS PAPER & TEXTILE CLASSES FA103 Bookmaking I

Instructor: Hye Shin Winter Tuesday, 10 a.m.-noon, 6 weeks Heritage Center Students learn a variety of bookbinding methods, including the basics of Case Bound, Coptic and Stab stitch (Japanese-style) on hardcover books.

FA104 The Art of Fabric Collage

Instructor: Hye Shin Winter Thursday, 10 a.m.–noon, 6 weeks Heritage Center This class is based on traditional quilting and sewing to develop a visual language using scraps of fabric, appliqué, threads and beads. Students will create printed fabrics of their own design using an ink jet printer. This class is for all levels.

A sewing machine is preferred for faster progress.

Students’ unique visions will be realized through their choice of embellishments.

FA105 The Art of Papermaking

Instructor: Hye Shin Spring Studio 7 Wednesday, 10 a.m.-noon, 6 weeks Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, junk mail, etc. Students will use mold and deckle techniques to make their own unique paper.

Molding, paper sculpture and basic bookbinding techniques will be taught. Make your own cards and envelopes, and 2-D and 3-D paper art.

NEW! FA106 Introduction to Papier Mâché

Instructor: Geoffry Sprague Winter & Spring Monday, 1-3 p.m.

Studio 1B Papier-mâché has been used for millennia to create ornamental and functional objects. Students will explore various materials, recipes and techniques for making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture with emphasis given on the advantages and quirks of the medium. Although this class has no prerequisites, prior sculpting experience is helpful.

NEW! FA201 Independent Study in Textiles

Instructor: Hye Shin Spring Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon Heritage Center Intermediate or advanced students – working in weaving, fabric design, embroidery, paper art, mixed media and soft sculpture – will work independently on projects with personal guidance from the instructor. Students will be assisted in developing a body of work and provided information on entering festivals, competitions and applying for grants. Students are given use of equipment during studio hours and complimentary basic studio materials.

QUILTING CLASSES FA101 Intro to Quilting Piecing and Patchwork

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Winter Monday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 6 weeks Heritage Center Always wanted to quilt, but didn’t know how to get started? In this beginner-level class, students will learn the basic steps of quilting. The class will cover fabric choices, quilting supplies, rotary cutting and more. Participants will learn the art of piecing patchwork blocks and matching points during this six-week course.

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Spring Monday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 6 weeks Heritage Center Discover how to do fusible machine appliqué.

The instructor will teach a unique and fun technique for fusible machine appliqué, which will be used to create a beautiful wall quilt. This class will teach how to select the right fabrics, prepare the background and appliqué pieces, successful fusing of raw edge appliqué, finishing the quilt and more. Appliqué has wonderful possibilities for clothes, quilts and home decor items.

JEWELRY & GLASS JG101 Introduction to Repoussé

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Spring Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., 4 weeks Studio 7 Start date: April 16 Learn this ancient metal-crafting technique with instructor demonstrations and hands-on assistance to practice the process. Work with handmade tools, hammers, punches and the pitch to create bas-relief sculptures in copper or silver. As repoussé is used for sculptural jewelry and metalsmithing, it has endless design possibilities for wall relief murals, mirrors and more. Tools provided for class use. A $10 copper materials fee is payable to Crealdé at registration. Limited to five students.

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Spring Saturday or Sunday, March 19 or 20 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Heritage Center Students will attend one of the two dates offered.

In this one-day demonstration and hands-on workshop, students will learn the basics of longarm machine quilting, including how to put the backing, batting and top onto the quilting machine. Participants also will learn how to stitch in the ditch, and meandering and simple free-motion patterns.

WKF02 Longarm Quilting: Beyond the Basics

Instructor: Sherry Goode-Carmell Spring Saturday or Sunday, May 14 or 15 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Heritage Center Students will attend one of the two dates offered.

Free-hand designs are fun and easy to do, and give quilting a very “custom” look. In this hands-on workshop, students will work on their appliqué quilts and use different free-hand patterns, stippling, echo quilting and fill-in patterns. Also “overall” freehand patterns will be discussed and created.

Members $100 • Non-members $120 After working more than 25 years in social service, Sherry Goode-Carmell opened a home-based sewing and quilting studio and has been teaching all areas of sewing and quilting, as well as being a long arm quilter for more than six years. She has made many dozens of quilts and longarmed even more. Commissions include the Seminole County Centennial Celebration. She was the chairperson for the Geneva Quilt Festival and has been a member of sewing and quilt guilds over the years.

This is a class for beginners to learn the beautiful craft of stained glass. We will introduce glass cutting, pattern making, copper foiling and soldering techniques. No prior stained glass experience is needed, and students of all levels are welcome. A supply fee of $55 is due at the first class.

Instructor: Brandon Price Winter & Spring Wednesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m., 6 weeks Winter registration deadline: Thursday January 14 Spring registration deadline: Thursday, March 24 Delve into your creative spirit as you enter the realm of glass-working. In this class, students will learn the basics of glassblowing, including color application, blowing a bubble, creating hollow forms, and expanding on these techniques working toward making solid glass sculptures. This class is appropriate for entry level or beginning students.

Classes are held on location at International Hot Glass in the Artegon Mall, located off International Drive. There is a makeup class on week 7.

Members $620 • Non-members $640 Brandon Price is from Akron, Ohio, and began his glass career more than 13 years ago at Bowling Green State University under the tutelage of Robert “Bud” Hurlstone.

His love of glass-blowing afforded him the opportunity to work and study in 43 states and on three continents, from a glass studio set on a barge in the Amsterdam canals to the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. He has studied in quiet mountains in South Africa, and performed on the rocking plains of Tennessee for the Bonnaroo music festival.

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Winter Sunday, January 31 Noon-5 p.m.

Studio 7 Focus on including gems in your jewelry with the most simple setting technique. With demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, students will be guided how to create a precision bezel and set the stone. To explore the process in depth and become familiar with the special tools, students will practice fabricating round and oval

and figurative forms will be constructed and prepared for kiln firing. Simple mold making will be introduced toward the end of the session.

Students will purchase their own clay and moldmaking material which will be available at class.

Gluing, riveting, bolting, mold making and casting will be used to connect dissimilar materials. Students will be asked to bring some materials, and some materials will be supplied.

Stefan Alexandres creates artwork using ancient techniques – no molds or stamps, just hand tools.

A sculptor and jeweler, he draws inspiration for his work from history, mythology, folk tales and real life.

A Crealdé faculty member since 2008, Alexandres apprenticed in traditional Old World metal arts, as guided through the organized guilds of Greece.

Students will make molds out of clay, plaster, low temperature wax, alginate and latex. All materials are included in the cost of the class.

Studio 7 This workshop elaborates traditional and contemporary prong-setting techniques. Learn how to precisely measure the stone and customize the basket. With samples, demonstrations and hands-on projects, students will be guided through the fundamental applications for different stone cuts. We will compare the straight 90-degree angle with variations of the 80-degree and 70-degree baskets. Class is limited to six students. Crealdé supplies the studio equipment, soldering station and the basic jewelry fabrication tools. Students will provide any stones or silver supplies needed.

On the first morning, students will be given help to decide about a working composition and address any drawing problems before they begin a plein-air piece of their own. A critique will be given at the end of the day, after having been given individual guidance along the way. Sunday morning in the studio, we will look at photos and drawings made of the subject matter and see how to utilize them to better advantage. The instructor will demonstrate on his piece and talk about studio work. In the afternoon, we will go back to our plein-air location for a final session and critique. Heritage Center Go beyond point and shoot! Armed with digital SLR cameras, budding photographers experiment with photographic principles during walking field trips in Winter Park, and learn how to create longexposure images using light painting. Add your final touches in our iMac Photoshop lab.

YAP405 Lomography: Film Photography with a Holga Twist!

Instructor: Trish O’Donnell Spring Friday, 4:30-6 p.m.

Studio 5 Leave the digital world behind, and play with a Holga film camera. Enjoy the essence of film photography-shooting without knowing exactly what you captured. It’s a mystery! Process film, and develop black-and-white prints in Crealdé’s own darkroom, then experiment with toning and hand-coloring to create masterpieces. Holgas, in a variety of colors, are available for use during class.

He is a graduate of the University of Florida, and his work is handbuilt using traditional slab, pinch and coil techniques. YOUNG ARTISTS PROGRAM WKYA39 Impressionist Pots

Instructor: Barbara Young Spring Saturday, May 14 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Studio 1B Transform a simple clay flower pot into an impressionistic work of art. In this workshop, our adult-child pairs will create unique paintings in the style of masters the likes of Monet and Renoir. Bring your own pots, and paint with your partner! Take home a family keepsake. This adult-child workshop is for children ages 8 and older with an adult.

Studio 5 Create amazing lighting painting with long-exposure digital photography. Participants will learn how to use creative lighting and long-exposure photography to produce dramatic imagery. Pick one of your images to be printed poster-size!
