Curiosity of the month...

Can you name the feminist figure born on the 25th of this month 156 years ago?

It’s Adelaide Cabete! Adelaide was a Portuguese physician, activist and feminist who founded the Portuguese women's organization, Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas, and served as its elected president from 1914 to the date of her passing

Cabete was the third Portuguese woman to graduate in Medicine and created the Republican League of Portuguese Women, along with Ana de Castro Osorio, in 1909. Through the two aforementioned institutions and the Alma Feminista (Feminist Soul) magazine, Adelaide supported underprivileged women and promoted awareness of better feminine hygiene and the opening of maternity wards.

“(...) all ladies and women's collectives in Portugal can take part in it, whatever social class they belong to, whatever their political faith or religious creed, which is why the purpose of this association is very simply to work for the civil, economic and moral improvement of women in particular and of humanity in general, absolutely removed from the struggle of passions" Adelaide Cabete on CNMP, interview for the newspaper O Mundo (1914)
