DR. MALAKEH TALEGHANI GRADUATE/UNDERGRADUATE ENDOWMENT & THE TALEGHANI LECTURE SERIES

Founded in May 2010, the Dr. Malakeh Taleghani Graduate and Undergraduate Endowment in Iranian Studies funds outstanding graduate and undergraduate research in all areas of Iranian studies, including Persian literature, anthropology, history, geography, political science, and music; Iranian art and architecture, and Iranian languages and linguistics. Due to the generosity of family and friends, the endowment has grown tremendously since its creation. In connection with the endowment, the Taleghani Lecture Series is sponsored by Prof. Simin Karimi and presented by the UA Department of Linguistics. Each year a prominent scholar in Iranian studies is invited to present a public lecture. The goal of the lecture series is to create awareness about various aspects of Iran and the Iranian culture among Americans and young Iranians, an issue that was very close to Dr. Taleghani’s heart.

Dr. Taleghani received a Ph.D. in Persian Literature from the University of Tehran. She was only the third Iranian woman to receive this degree. She is the author of The Ups and Downs of the Life of an Iranian Woman and a co-author of Zan dar Iran-e Bastaan (Women in Ancient Iran). She has also written nine plays based on Persian literary masterpieces.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ervand Abrahamian was Distinguished Professor of History at the City University of New York. He is now Professor Emeritus of History at Baruch College and the Graduate Center in the City University of New York. He is the author of: Iran Between Two Revolutions (Princeton University Press, 1982); The Iranian Mojahedin (Yale University Press, 1989); Khomeinism (University of California Press, 1993); Tortured Confessions: Prisons and Public Recantations in Iran (University of California Press, 2004); A History of Modern Iran (Cambridge University Press, 2008); The Coup: 1953, and The CIA and the Roots of Modern US-Iranian Relations (The New Press, 2013). His books have been translated and published in Persian, Turkish, Arabic, Italian, and Polish.

He has recently completed Oil Crisis in Iran: From Nationalism to Coup Etat (Cambridge University Press, Summer 2021). He is now working on a book on the 1979 revolution.

In 2011, he was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 2010.

ABSTRACT OF THE TALK Iran In Permanent Crisis

Ever since November 2022, Iran has been shaken by widespread and persistent street protests. The talk will discuss the multiple reasons for these outbursts and speculate on the possibility that these protests could turn into a revolt and eventually overturn the whole regime—in other words, produce another revolution.
