W

hen I read this J. K. Rowling quotation, I smiled, knowing that I too have these kinds of friends. I have them because I attended this school, and I know from the stories I hear from alumnae around the world that I am not unique. This is why friendship seemed the perfect focus for this Bulletin. The power of friendship, especially friendship borne out of childhood, is immeasurable. Stories of deep friendship abound in our archives, at Reunion, during alumnae gatherings, and right now in the halls of StoneleighBurnham School.

I have only one lifelong childhood friend that predates my years at SBS; all the rest come from my years here. While I have made many friends during my adult life, my “SBS sisters” are the friends I can point to most readily as those who know me best, who would do anything for me (and I, them), and who will always tell me the truth. I love them like no one else in my life.

For me, living with a bunch of other girls made a big difference in how I understood the world. We had time in the dorms and on the bus to explore our ideas together, try to piece together the meaning of life, and share experiences vicariously through each other. Being in a boarding environment meant having more time together, figuring out the pieces while we were inextricably responsible for our own actions. Just like our girls today, we students had our own subculture going on, and that struggling to understand the world and our place in it bonded us in significant ways.

I ask all of you to take a moment and think about who those friends were during your time here. Where are they now in your life, and what have they “done

for you” in times of need? We recount some of those stories here, and I know they are going to resonate for you.

Looking Toward the Future

THE SBS LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM & GALA October 19, 2013

On October 19, 2013, Stoneleigh-Burnham School embarked on a defining initiative by hosting a Leadership Symposium and Gala event. We brought together our 1869 Society and True Blue donors, Sayles Planned Giving Society members and volunteers to share our strategic and master plans and hear ideas in return.

Invested stakeholders joined trustees, students, and faculty in open forum discussions about topics that define SBS: Performing Arts, Riding, Debate and Public Speaking, SBS as an IB World School, Athletics, STE(A)M, The Master Campus Plan, and Why All Girls in 2013?

Lively conversation captivated everyone on campus during the day. The evening was capped off with a gala celebration as the school launched the Bridge Fund, a fundraising initiative that will pave the way to an innovative future for SBS. More information on the Bridge Fund will be provided in the Summer 2014 Bulletin.

Liz Engel’s (’88) Battle With Breast Cancer

hen she found out she had breast cancer at 38, Elizabeth Engel’s life turned upside down.

A lumpectomy followed by intensive chemotherapy and radiation for the better part of a year left her tired and worn out.

She lost her hair. She imagined her own obituary.

Engel took a leave of absence from her job at a boutique shop for dog owners in downtown Portland, Maine and eventually quit. She started volunteering. She donated her time to Meals on Wheels and began raising money for cancer organizations.

It has been nearly eight years since her diagnosis and while she may need several more years of hormone treatments, Engel

her family and close friends, including the friendships that began on the campus of Stoneleigh-Burnham School nearly 30 years ago.

“The people that I met at Stoneleigh, they were the people I knew I could call with good news or bad,” Engel said.

Soon after her doctor told her she had cancer, Engel got on the phone. She called her sister, her brother and her mother.

Then, she called Kathryn Kleinhans.

Engel and Kleinhans met at StoneleighBurnham School in 1985. The self-described “Jersey girls” -- Engel was from Ho-Ho-Kus and Kleinhans from Clinton – quickly bonded and became close friends even though Engel was two years older.

Over the years, the women kept in touch through letters and phone calls, and planned visits and vacations together.

and celebrated each other’s milestones.

Instead, she started baking.

When they heard about her breast cancer, Engel’s family, each of whom were living in different parts of the country, rushed to her side. Kleinhans, back in New Jersey, desperately wanted to do the same. But, she had a newborn baby and wasn’t able to make the trip at that time.

“I’m not a baker at all, but I baked like nobody’s business,” Kleinhans said. “I sent boxes and boxes of brownies and cookies.”

“I remember sitting here nursing my son and my tears were falling on his head,” Kleinhans said.

“It was hard for me,” she added. “I knew her family was there with her, but I felt kind of trapped here. But, I never let her know I was sitting around crying, and I didn’t let her know I was worried she was going to die.”

Engel remembers the packages from Kleinhans as well as gifts sent from other friends, including Rebecca Sinn, who met Engel in the barn when they were both in 10th grade at Stoneleigh-Burnham School.

Sinn also vividly remembers how shocked she was when Engel called her to tell her it was cancer.

“I was crying and crying, and she was the one who comforted me,” Sinn said. “I was so scared, and she is tremendously brave.”

They were both horse riders and graduated together in 1986. Engel was a bridesmaid in Sinn’s wedding and later visited her in Michigan to celebrate New Year’s Eve, a trip that happened just before Engel was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She is also funny, down to earth, kind and generous, say her friends, and these are some of the qualities that first drew them to Engel as students together at StoneleighBurnham. And, the women said their years at Stoneleigh-Burnham School laid the groundwork for their lifelong friendships.

formation, as an adult and as a friend,” Sinn said. “You can pick up the phone and know that we always have time for each other, like a day hasn’t gone by. It’s rare to find friends like that.”

It was no surprise to her friends that Engel’s breast cancer spurred her to throw herself into working for organizations that help others.

By the time Kleinhans was able to visit Engel, she had opted to have her head shaved rather than wait for all the hair to fall out on its own. Engel was nervous to show her friend what she looked like bald.

“Liz is probably one of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever known,” Sinn said. “She’s super outgoing and friendly.

She has the greatest sense of humor. She was even like that going through it.”

By February 2006, Engel had recovered from surgery and begun her treatment, which included six rounds of intense chemotherapy, followed by 32 rounds of radiation. A few weeks into chemo, Engel noticed that as she ran her fingers through her hair, it would fall out. There was one very windy day when she was walking

“I’m not a vain person but losing your hair is huge,” Engel added. “Losing my hair, that was very traumatic.”

“It was super hard for her,” Kleinhans said. “She was in a horrible place. She took off her head scarf and started crying.”

But, Kleinhans said that all she saw was the same person she’d known all those years.

“She looked just like herself,” Kleinhans said. “It wasn’t startling at all to see her without hair. It was just Liz.” While she preferred to wear head scarves

-- sometimes along with big earrings sent to her by Sinn, the “fashionista” of the friends -- occasionally Engel went out wearing a wig. It was during the visit by Kleinhans that Engel wore her wig out in public for the first time. The two women went to a flower show and Engel felt uncomfortable in her wig, tugging at it and fretting about how it looked.

“It was a beautiful wig but it feels different,” Engel explained. “You can’t tell when something is touching your hair.”

At one point during the flower show, the women stopped at a table to rest and chat.

When Engel stood up again, her wig got caught in a hanging plant above her.

“Kathryn just looked straight at me and I said, ‘What?’ and she said, ‘Don’t move,’” Engel said. “Then we both just started laughing.”

It was January 2006 when Engel was first

Her 40th birthday was approaching and friends and family were pressing her to decide how she wanted to celebrate. Engel recalled sitting in a doctor’s office flipping through a magazine. She turned a page and spotted an advertisement for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Boston. The three-day, 60-mile walk happened to be scheduled during the weekend of Engel’s 40th birthday.

“I was on the sweeper bus every day,” Kleinhans said.

Engel’s team, the Red Footed Boobies, raised more than $40,000 that year.

sponsored by the Maine Cancer Foundation. Again, Kleinhans and Crawford joined her, and she has been doing that race for five years.

“It keeps me focused on being fit and it’s a way to pay it forward,” Engel said. “It’s a way to raise money and get things done.”

“I said, ‘That’s what I want to do for my birthday,’ ” Engel said.

She quickly pulled together a team, recruiting Kleinhans and another old friend and StoneleighBurnham alumna Tiffany Crawford, who lived in Portland and often visited Engel during her cancer treatments.

Liz Engel ’88 has raced in the Portland, Maine Tri for a Cure to raise money for the Maine Cancer Foundation for the last 5 years.

Engel says the Komen walk is something she could never have imagined doing “before cancer.” But, that experience, prompted her to do more.

And, Engel doesn’t consider herself to be one of the most athletic people, so, “If I can do it, anyone can.”

“It was fear that motivated me at first,” Engel said. “I thought if I’m going to die I better get my chits in.”

Sinn said Engel has been very successful at raising money, and seems to have found a true calling.

“I reconnected with Jane through that walk,” Engel said.

“Cancer changed my perspective on how I wanted to be remembered,” she added.

“Nobody ever turns Liz Engel down for a contribution,” Sinn said.

She joined Engel’s team and the two rekindled their friendship.

Amy Nolan Woodruff (’68B)and Suzanne Scull Trzcienski (’68B) on their Lifelong Friendship

S

ince my arrival at Stoneleigh-Burnham I’ve been moved by the sense of community I witness in our halls; our girls truly care for and support each other without holding back, without judgment. I had to go to college to find friendships like the ones I see here and hear about from our alumnae. There is something about the nooks and crannies in the maze of this school that seem to breed true, silly, honest, boundless friendship.

When putting this Bulletin together, we wanted to profile one such friendship – a “you’ve seen me at my best, and my worst, and still love me” type of friendship. The one that came to our attention was the bond between Amy Nolan Woodruff and Suzanne Scull Trzcienski, both Class of 1968 Mary A. Burnham.

Despite the distance between them – Amy lives in California and Sue splits time between Connecticut and Arkansas – their friendship has endured and grown; it is a testament to their shared history. Sue quoted a saying she once heard that helps put words to the bond she shares with Amy: “No matter how dear true love, true friendship is dearer.”

Amy and Sue were 16 when they met at Burnham’s Northampton campus and as

Sue told me, “Something special happens when you get a group of 16-18 year old girls all living together, sharing every meal, studying, playing. We became inseparable.”

Sue was the oldest of four and Amy the youngest of four – something they said created “an immediate bond” when they found each other. Amy had come from New Jersey and Sue from West Hartford, Connecticut.

They both found themselves living in “The Cottage.” Despite the fact that they didn’t share any classes, Sue recalls that she was drawn to Amy’s sense of humor and Amy felt like Sue was “an open book.”

Whatever it was, something clicked, and they began a lifelong friendship that would thrive through the years and physical distance that continues to separate them.

They say one of the greatest aspects of Mary A. Burnham was the school’s dedication to tradition. “We all left our families and the traditions we had at home,” Sue said. “But Burnham filled the void with lots of new ones. And of course us girls developed our own too. Those traditions and our friendships made it feel like family.”

On Sundays, a school House Mother would arrange for the girls who wanted to attend church services at Edwards Congregational. Sue says, “I think I only attended services once or twice before I figured out that I could just walk in the front, and keep walking right out the back door to sneak down to Wiggins Tavern for brunch.”

“Amy was a good Catholic girl until we started attending Burnham and I corrupted her.”

And when school was on break, the girls’ took their new “family” right along with them. Amy was often invited on vacations with Sue’s family, where they reported “whipping up all kinds of trouble.”

The Scull family took Amy on one such vacation to Nevis in the British West Indies, where Sue’s family stayed in a sugar plantation home. “For one or two weeks, us kids had the run of the island,” Amy says. “We climbed mountains, played cards around hurricane lamps, went swimming. It was amazing and I am so grateful to Sue’s family for that experience.”

They graduated in 1968 and both moved on to different colleges – Sue to Elmira and Amy to Newton College and then Boston University for graduate work, but they kept up through letters and the occasional phone call. “I think we mostly just talked about our boyfriends,” Sue said with a laugh.

After their first year in college, Amy says that Sue knew she was struggling to find a job. “She hooked me up with a family from West Hartford who needed a nanny for their summer vacation in Hyannis Port (Cape Cod). The house was a block away from the Kennedy compound and that was the summer of the Chappaquiddick incident. I got to watch the whole thing unravel from across the street!”

For a few years after college, Amy and Sue lost touch except for the occasional Christmas card and infrequent phone call.

“No matter how long we didn’t talk, I always knew our bond was there,” said Amy. They attended each other’s weddings and then the years passed, but when Sue gave birth to her first daughter in 1976, it was clear that their friendship was as strong as ever. “I always loved the name Amy, but didn’t want anyone to think I named my daughter after Amy Carter.”

So Sue named her first daughter Aime.

And when Amy’s second daughter was born, she said, “I remembered always loving the flow of Suzanne Taylor Scull (Suzanne’s maiden name). And Suzanne, it’s just a beautiful name.” And so these lifelong friends served as namesakes for each other’s daughters.

Now that their children are adults, Amy and Sue have made a point to see each other more often. “Our husbands get along so well and they met each other so early on, that now they just come along for the ride.” Amy, Sue and two of their friends from Burnham, Peggy McElhone Broskie and Mary Lee Prescott-Griffin organized a mini-reunion in Swansea, MA three years ago. Sue said, “We’re just as bad now as we were back then.

The memories are as fresh as they were 47 years ago. And Amy still brings out the very best in me.”

It’s likely impossible to adequately sum up a nearly 50-year friendship in one short essay, but the words Sue inscribed in Amy’s yearbook back in 1968 may come close.

She wrote, “I’m sure that we will both make new friendships in the future, but ours will remain above the others.”

And so it has.

Nothing makes those of us here on campus – faculty, staff, and students – feel more supported, which is why we work assiduously to steward your gifts responsibly.

As always, Annual Fund gifts are used to support general operations of the school, financial aid, and faculty professional development each year. Your gifts that are not applied to the Annual Fund and restricted to certain areas also lead to increased capacity to support student experience. Whether it’s for a renovated dorm room, something new at the Equestrian Center, our STE(A)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) initiative, Debate and Public Speaking, or the arts and athletics, your gift counts and we are grateful.

During the 2012-2013 academic year, we were able to accomplish with your gifts some major objectives in our Strategic Plan. These include but are not limited to: • Student financial support to defray the cost of IB exams. (By the way, did you know that 100% of last year’s seniors were awarded the IB Diploma? The international average was 78%...)

• Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, for which we brought in women engineers and offered our students opportunities to try out a variety of related activities.

• Renovation of the indoor riding arenas (Flagg Hall and the Lion’s Den), including new state-of-the-art footing, new kickboards and some structural repairs.

• The introduction of a new sophomore one-term requirement in Rhetoric, teaching our 10th graders how to hone an argument and speak publicly.

• Twelve newly renovated dorm rooms on sophomore corridor, thereby completing all renovations on the 9th and 10th grade corridors.

I hope that all of you who have not recently been on campus will make the effort to come visit us. There is a lot of excitement here lately, and we love to show off what your support helps us accomplish. Of course, nothing reflects our school better than the extraordinary girls we have here; they will tell you the myriad ways your gifts have enriched their lives. Please…keep it up! ROOM RENOVATIONS During the 2013 summer months we refurbished four rooms in the tenth grade corridor. Generous contributions from alumnae helped us elevate the student experience when the newly refurbished rooms were ready in September. On October 3, 2012, a small group of alumnae challenged themselves and others to get involved and established a scholarship in honor of Tom Iampietro and Canny Cahn (Candy Iampietro) for a deserving Stoneleigh-Burnham girl interested in pursuing the Humanities. As of December 26, 2013, close to $80,000 has been given and pledged to this scholarship! When the fund reaches $100,000, it will become an endowed scholarship and live in perpetuity here at Stoneleigh-Burnham School. Tom and Canny joined alumnae and friends on Saturday, June 15, 2013 for Reunion as the Iampietro Scholarship was publicly announced. Student riders, community riders and even Head of School Sally Mixsell (through her riding lessons!) are taking full advantage of the new footings and renovation of the indoor arenas. Completion of the project took place in June with the arenas ready for Bonnie Castle and Intensive Riding Camps last summer.

The renovation was made possible by a generous gift from the Castegren family, led by Vicky Castegren ’94 and her mother Eva Castegren. Naomi Gendron Waidlich ’01 and her husband Mike, of EastWest Arena Construction, provided a gift-in-kind with the donation of time and materials for the project.

A ribbon cutting will take place this spring. Please stay tuned for information on the date and time.

I was in Cuba last year at this time, but the pleasure of that trip will have to last a while longer before I go somewhere else. I am still very involved with my dog rescue groups and being a mentor for a child advocacy non-profit that I co-founded ten years ago. My three dogs and 20 year-old cat keep me busy. I continue to walk no matter the weather! Alixe “Pete” Carpenter Hugret says: We need to get together now and then if only via the web. Jeff and I are still in Freeland, Washington. I love having my daughter, Camille and son-in-law, Tim living just down the road. We don’t have grandkids as yet, but we are always hopeful!

Pete and Jeff will be out sailing on their 47foot ketch when the weather warms up again.

Lorraine Price Muth says: My son and family live close by and Bob is in Kalispell, MT, so we are able to share holidays (and lots of other time) together. My daughter Mindy, who lives near Seattle,WA visits as often as possible, and I get out to her place several times a year. I am still as busy as ever. I play indoor tennis three days a week during the winter. I also play duplicate bridge in the afternoon. I ski on Tuesdays and Thursdays at a local ski resort where I formerly worked as the nurse with ski patrol. I did that for 13 years before retiring from nursing. I find myself less adventurous on the slopes as I get older, but the powder still lures me. and Bob and I cross country ski together occasionally.

I also snowshoe. I recently snowshoed to the summit of the local ski resort, Whitefish Mountain and back down. It was a long haul, but a good workout. I have posted many wonderful photos on Facebook of my summer hiking travels. I am still playing the banjo with a group of friends, and jamming once a week with a fellow who plays fiddle. Nancy Frisbie Clark writes: I spent Thanksgiving this year in Rumson, NJ with oldest son Taylor and his family and my second son Carter, who visited from West Hartford, CT with his family. I definitely missed my third son Chris and family who live in Atlanta, GA. My oldest grandson Charlie, graduated from Bates last June and now works

on Wall Street with Citigroup. All six of my grandkids are great. There are 5 boys and 1 girl. Jan Mottershead O’Donnell and I get together once or twice a year. I will be heading down to Stuart, FL after the holidays for the winter. Jan Mottershead O’Donnell says: My husband Patrick and I had seven wonderful months with friends and family in Rehoboth, DE. All of our kids and grandkids were with us for a great deal of the summer.

I had Thanksgiving there with all sixteen around the table. I am doing Pilates, walking, playing golf and Bridge. Patrick is fine, but too involved in new ventures for my liking.

I love seeing Frisbie and miss everyone else.

I am grateful for my family and dear friends, and so many memories from Stoneleigh.

Susan Pruyn King says: I have had quite a time since April. I have been dealing with a severe back problem. I am making progress, but it’s been a long haul. Patience can only go so far. In the meantime, it was my first time at Fenway at a Red Sox game in June. I was perched on the Green Monster, no less! The Sox ended up winning in the ninth! It was a great day to rally in Boston, especially after the bombing. Tom and my daughter Kirsten have kept busy “covering” for me. Barry and I had a great 5 months at Highland Lake in CT, returning in October. It was a fun-filled five months, as we were so close to our son Lev, daughter-in-law, and grandsons Marshall, 15 and Henry, 13. My daughter Sara is in New York City, a short train ride away. At this moment, we are getting ourselves ready for the trek back up there for the holidays with everyone. I am looking forward to that!

I love Florida and its weather, but we miss the family. Mimi Lawton Cooper writes: Meanwhile, things in St. Augustine are fine.

We seem to keep busy enough, with projects around our little bungalow. I haven’t been terribly productive with my painting lately, but have been more so with the jewelry which is more fun and instantly gratifying. By now most everyone has learned of Susan Lawson Farmer’s passing. She fought a long battle with cancer, with great grace and strength.

If you Google Susan Lawson Farmer, you will learn of her numerous achievements, political and otherwise. She was certainly a fine lady and an inspiration. Good wishes for the New Year. Happy 2014! Drop a line when you get the urge.

Age, being but numerals on a page, I am once again a coed so to speak and am enrolled in the graduate certificate program for Fundraising Management at Boston University. I have been doing a great deal of work on the volunteer side of things, and thought it would not hurt to have the “street creds” so to speak. If all goes according to plan, I shall complete the program in December 2014. I found it very amusing to see the reaction on classmates’ faces upon introducing myself to the class as a BU alum, class of 1975! A few gasps, a few “oh my’s” and a spattering of “really?” could be heard. Once again a student, I thought that a party was in order, so I hosted a “Welcome to the 60’s” party.

Good SBS friends Mary Maloney ’69, Sally Leach Mixsell ’69 and Jennifer Pickering ’72 helped me rock ‘n roll the night away! I hear from Vivian Lee thanks to email. Unfortunately, her daughters’ college schedules did not jive with the date of my party or she too would have been in attendance! I have had the good fortune to visit the SBS campus a fair amount this year. The plans to transform the facility, bringing it into the 21st century, are so exciting! The high quality education that the students receive will at long last start to be matched by quality up-to-date facilities!

Lena Rosen writes: I graduated from Tuft’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. After a few months working as a vet in NJ, I was offered a job back in my home state of Vermont. It’s been great getting to move back closer to home and be near my friends and family, not to mention the ski areas. I now live in Manchester, VT and work at Aeolus Animal Hospital and Equine Center.

I recently joined the local women’s hockey team, which has been a blast. I’m often on call as we are a two-doctor practice. The rest of my free time is spent snowboarding or exploring the local hiking and snowshoeing trails with my dog. Laura Lavallee shares: A little over a year ago I moved to a borough just outside Philadelphia, PA with my fiancé, Josh. He is the sous chef at a local restaurant and I am the Director of Public Relations at George School. We are both looking forward to our wedding in October 2014. Dance Fall Concert-New Perspectives. I was able to work with dancers Trebien Pollard in a modern work, Gina Patterson in a ballet work and was a soloist in an Emery LeCrone ballet piece. It was by far the hardest show I have done in my four years at Goucher. This semester I am choreographing my first formal piece. I have been working with five contemporary ballet dancers this entire semester and they will be performing a 10-minute piece I put together, titled “There, But Not There” in December. I am crossing my fingers that my work will be selected to be performed in the Mid-Atlantic American College Dance Festival Association held at George Mason University in March. Other than that, I have just been dancing and getting things together to audition for possible companies for the 2014 season across the United States. Sophie Dorsch says: I am doing well – back in school and working. I am at The University of Kentucky majoring in Animal Science.

I continue to love my animals as usual. I have a one year old puppy and I still have Marley from SBS. Marley currently loves the retired life. He has two grey girlfriends that fight over him. He is fatter than ever and getting lots of good rest and relaxation.

Life is great in Kentucky, and we’re gearing up for hopefully another great basketball season. I couldn’t be more excited. I hope to visit soon; not a day goes by without me recalling an old SBS memory! Leah Zraunig shares: I still love Saint Anselem and this semester has been extremely busy with tests and papers. I handed in the rough draft of my big thesis paper recently, which took a lot of work and research! Luckily, I am finished with my Criminal Justice and other class requirements for next semester. I will do an internship in the spring with one class on campus. My internship is going to be at the Division of Child, Youth and Family Services in Concord, NH, working with parents and kids in the NH Parent Partner Program, a fairly new program. I am still very interested in working with at-risk youth! I still play on the club softball team, which is always fun!

I’m currently in the process of selling my mare Cosima L, and am looking to buy and develop a talented young horse that I will also sell in the future. possibly double majoring in Gender Studies and doing a Nexus minor called Law, Public Policy and Human Rights. I am a member of the Feminist Collective on campus called the F-Word and in the process of becoming a campus-ambassador for the Weissman Center for Leadership at Mount Holyoke College.

Anna Swartzentruber says: I’m a tentative Classics major and definite Music minor at Bryn Mawr; I also sing with a fantastic choir in Philadelphia twice a week. Rachel Gledhill writes: I am an Early Childhood Education major and a Psychology and Human Service studies double minor at Elon.

I am starting to plan an undergrad research project in order to continue learning about Hippotherapy (my SBS senior project) and other forms of animal assisted therapies.

Alysha Romain writes: I am currently finishing my first semester at Connecticut College; it is amazing here! I volunteer at the preschool on campus, working with children who are 3-5 years old, in addition to being manager for the Women’s Varsity Basketball team.

Courtney Hartford says: I am a Doctor of Pharmacy major at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. I’m working in my general chemistry lab and trying to start volunteering/working at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in their outpatient pharmacy.

In Memoriam Janet “Sis” Lewis (Mrs. Richard B Lewis) P ’68S & ’72 (May 21, 1927 - August 13, 2013) Janet-Louise Middleton Lewis, mother of Sharon Lewis Gaffey ’68 and Charlotte Lewis Hankus ’72 passed away peacefully on August 13, 2013. Sis, as she was known by her family and friends, was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 21, 1927, graduated from The Madeira School, and received her RN from Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing in 1949. Her nursing career began at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut before her marriage to the love of her life Richard Brainard Lewis Jr. on May 21, 1949.

Sis was very fond of Stoneleigh-Burnham School and was a thoughtful and generous donor. She and her family have shown great support for the photography program since 1991 and created opportunities for many girls to explore the art of photography. She also helped the program transition to the digital age by establishing the R.B. Lewis Photography Fund in honor of her late husband, Richard B. Lewis.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband and their four children. Traveling the world and finding the best golf courses was a passion she shared with many. She was also an accomplished equestrienne and an avid sailor.

After retirement, she and her husband moved to New London, New Hampshire in 1986. Sis became very involved with the New London Hospital in many ways from serving on the Board of Directors to volunteering her time in whatever capacity she was most needed. In addition to her work at the hospital, she served on the board of trustees at the New England Kurn Hattin Homes in Westminster, Vermont.

She is survived by her children Sharon Gaffey of Simsbury, CT; Charlotte Hankus of Derry, New Hampshire; Richard Lewis of Yarmouth, Maine and Neil Lewis of Ft. Collins, Colorado.

This winter, Sharon and Charlotte have continued Sis’ tradition of donating to the R.B. Lewis Photography Fund in her honor.

O

ne day in Humanities 7, we were talking about different ideas of what is feminism and what is feminine when suddenly their voices began to get louder and more urgent. There was an edge, and I could tell there was something below the surface I hadn’t quite deciphered yet when one of the girls told another, “You’re a dudist!” Before I’d recovered laughing from the inventive spontaneity of the word “dudist,” I knew I had finally figured out what was going on: some kids in the class viewed feminism as inherently anti-men, while others didn’t. I explained that, while there is indeed a small and often vocal group of feminists who are anti-men and who perhaps get disproportionate coverage in the media, by no means do they speak for all feminists. One could, I told the kids, in fact argue there are as many kinds of feminism as there are feminists. And that led to an inspiration.

with it, for a host of reasons including, for some, its reinforcement of a binary view of gender. The seventh graders had come up with the term “equalist” the day before, and many of the sophomores nodded slowly as they considered it. “I

“Some of the strongest feminists in this school,” I told the students, “are in Ms. Durrett’s Sophomore Honors English class. Would you like to invite them to join us one day to talk about all this?” They loved the idea, as did Ms. Durrett and her students. Both classes wrote questions to help frame the discussion, and on the appointed day, the sophomores came streaming into our room. The kids all settled into every beanbag chair in the middle school, some doubling up, with a look of anticipation on their faces.

Though not all the questions dealt directly with feminism, that’s where we began the discussion. There was remarkable agreement over what I think of as the core ideals of feminism: equal rights for all people, including girls and women. There was, however, a much more extended discussion of the word itself. Few students were comfortable

like it,” one said, and a sophomore identified that as one of three specific stand-out moments for her “because [the term “equalism”] offers a wider acceptance and understanding of what feminism stands for.”

Whether and how we will be able to achieve the ideals of equalism is another question altogether, of course. Students felt firmly that the concept that we all should be seeking equality should become the norm and not the ideal, but they were deeply skeptical we would ever be able to truly achieve equality.

Humans, they felt, seem to have a natural need for hierarchies, and of course different people have different aptitudes and affinities. However, they hastened to point out, that need not automatically lead to assigning gender to those roles, and hierarchies don’t necessarily have to be attached to them either.

When the topic turned to girls’ schools, most of the students, though definitely not all, said they came here looking to get

away from the behaviors and influences of boys. They love our academic way of being and the way students listen to each other’s ideas, hear them out, and build on them. One sophomore told a story of attending a debate where a girl from another school had a long name, and shocked our student by apologizing for it to the teacher serving as a judge who had to write it down. This led another sophomore to say, “It’s one thing to apologize for being rude, it’s another to apologize for your existence.”

One of the seventh graders observed a similar gap in confidence between students at our school and girls in coed schools, noting that some of her friends have changed a ton in just the three short months we’ve been here while she has basically stayed true to herself.

It stunned and scared her how quickly that gap had opened up, but it also made her grateful for what she had. Another sophomore noted, in another high point of the discussion, that StoneleighBurnham “has taught us to be more than girls and women. It has taught us to be individuals.”

We kept talking right up to and even a little bit beyond the bell, and as the students jumped up and hoisted their backpacks to their shoulders, many of them, sophomores and seventh graders alike, asked if we could do it again. Of course they would want to do so – throughout the period, they were uniformly respectful and listened actively to everyone. Many voices of all ages were heard, and they had created an atmosphere of equals. No doubt, they have many more questions they still want to ask. No doubt, we will be doing this again.
