Headteacher’s Welcome The school has had an exciting and successful Summer Term 2018.

I am very proud of the way our school community works together and this edition of Sarah Bonnell News highlights the great opportunities students at Sarah Bonnell School have had in their lessons, visits and events.

I wish you all an enjoyable and safe summer holiday and look forward to the beginning of another great school year on Tuesday 4 September 2018.

Head Girl’s Welcome Wow...what a year it has been. As the year begins to come to an end I would like to say a huge well done to every student and staff member for their focus, hard work and efforts towards all that has been accomplished this year. At Sarah Bonnell, we have a lot to celebrate across the school and year groups. In our school we have accomplished a wide range of achievements and we all each have something to feel proud of.

The support I have received during my journey as Head Girl has really been second to none. In April, I officially started in my role, not having any expectations of what this responsibility would truly entail. I feel beyond honoured to lead and represent such a unique school, such as Sarah Bonnell. Thank you all.

I look forward to implementing all my ideas and officially driving ‘One Vision, One Team, One Voice’ forward.

Our Perfect team started this term, enthusiastic and ready to make an impact on the wider school community. Their positive attitudes and presence around the school has been fantastic. Well Done.

A big well done to all the year 11’s for finally completing a long two months of GCSE exams! I have no doubts that each and every one of you will smash it with your results.

Deputy Head Girl’s Welcome My Name is Melanie Corbin, and I am Deputy Head Girl.

My responsibilities include Student Wellbeing, and working alongside the Year 8 Council. My future plans are to issue a number of surveys out to students to get an insight on the general feelings around coming to school, and emotional transitions of being in school and facing challenges. I will choose to follow up mainly on the mental health path which includes planning events like Anti-bullying week, and hopefully, in the future a mindfulness week which promotes clear thinking, being in touch with one’s emotions, and problem solving. I hope to work closely with Ms Flowers to carry these actions through, and make them great!

Recently, I helped out at Vitality Week, where I assisted students on the bouncy castle activities, along with writing and helping with some vitality pledges. My overall vision for being Deputy head girl is to work alongside my peers to create a more mentally and emotionally cohesive version of Sarah Bonnell School.

World Book Day Once again the Learning Hub hosted a fantastic day of literacy, books and storytelling on World Book Day which fell on Thursday 1st March.

Staff and students looked fabulous dressed up in their favourite book characters including Oompa Loompas (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Cat in the Hat (Cat in the Hat), Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Lady Macbeth (Macbeth), the Scarecrow (The Wizard of Oz), the Phantom of the Opera (The Phantom of the Opera) and Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations).

The Learning Hub was transformed into a gothic forest and I dressed up as the Woman in Black and Mr Afolabi became Count Dracula for the day.

During lessons, Year 7 English, Year 9 French and Year 8 Science classes came down to participate in cross curriculum literacy activities. The girls had a huge amount of fun playing the games whilst also enhancing their learning and were rewarded with prizes. Each student took away specially designed gothic bookmarks as a memento of the day which were gratefully received. Our Year 7 Nurture Group and Year 10 Rowling Pathway students, enjoyed a special ghost story telling session and were given a copy of the Ghost Library written by David Melling to take home.

In true Learning Hub style a lunchtime extravaganza was put on to showcase gothic literature complete with costumes, scenery and props.

To add to the atmosphere the eerie soundtrack to the Woman in Black played throughout the event which helped to create the dark realm we needed for our gothic theme. Our Year 8 girls delivered an outstanding performance of a scene from the book, Frankenstein, Year 9 students dramatised scenes from The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and Year 10 girls performed Macbeths vision of Banquo’s ghost. There were also gothic readings from Dracula by Khadeja Shebani, Year 11 and The Woman in Black by Sofia Genuise also in Year 11. The recital of the famous, Raven poem was read beautifully by Hajar Ibrahim in Year 7.

A treasure hunt competition was held, where students had to hunt around the school to collect and decipher a number of riddles based on books. We were very pleased to award an Amazon Kindle Fire HD Tablet to each of our Year 11 winners, Rayan Ibrahim and Palwasha Khan.

It was a wonderful day that brought the school together to celebrate the world of books and literature, and one that left everyone eagerly anticipating World Book Day 2019!

What’s happening in the French Department?

Portobello Road Afterwards we returned to the library where we spoke to some of the school’s students, asking them questions in Spanish and English, and answering Spanish questions ourselves. This was a really useful activity as we got to know the students a bit better as we spoke to them in small groups. It also helped us practice our Spanish speaking skills and improve our confidence. Next, we went to two different lessons, both taught entirely in Spanish – “Historia” y “Educación Física”. Both lessons were very interactive but some of the subject-specific vocabulary was very hard to understand!

This year, students from the French department have had the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting events, visits and competitions.

Year 11 students attended a PiXL conference at Westminster, which allowed them to take part in interactive activities and workshops around the new GCSE. The day’s activities gave students the chance to recall their knowledge and practise speaking and writing spontaneously with students from different parts of London. The students really enjoyed the experience and have recommended the event for all future Year 11’s! Students also took part in a visit from a French theatre company, which allowed them to practise speaking through drama, as well as being a fun and confidencebuilding experience.

Year 10 students were excited to visit the French Institute, located in South Kensington, and be immersed in French culture through various activities, culminating in a viewing of the film ‘Les Heritiers’. Back at Sarah Bonnell, KS3 students took part in a Francophone Quiz, organised by the French Institute to celebrate ‘La Francophonie’ - French speaking countries around the world. Five teams entered and although we unfortunately didn’t win the national competition, everyone had a great time and learnt a lot about francophone culture. Year 7 have also been writing letters to French pen-pals, thanks to a new link that has been established with Saint Gilbert School in Montceau-lesMines. Students have now sent their letters and are eagerly awaiting replies from their new friends in France. Next year will see the French department offer a new school link to Year 7 students, as well as continuing the letter exchange with Saint Gilbert School.

Throughout the year, a group of Year 8 students have been working hard on the Language Challenge, organised by SOAS, University of London. Teams completed a total of five tasks each in the French language, such as ‘Bake Off’ and ‘Science Experiment’. After months of hard work, 20 students submitted their entries and all were shortlisted

On Tuesday 6th February, 20 Year 10 students visited “Instituto Cañada Blanch”, a Spanish school in Portobello Road, West London. On arrival, students and teachers were greeted (in Spanish!) by one of the tutors who was from Barcelona.

In the library (la biblioteca) we watched a video, in Spanish, about the school and its history, as well as some information about Spain. Next, a group of students gave a tour around the school – which again was all in Spanish, and was excellent practice for improving our listening skills. Some of the students spoke English too so they could help out with anything we did not understand. Next came the best part – “churros con chocolate!” Churros are a special type of fried Spanish pastry which you dip into thick, melted chocolate - ¡qué delicioso!

During the Spring Term the curriculum areas of Art and Languages had the opportunity to visit a Picasso’s exhibition at the Tate Gallery.

We ended the day by eating lunch with the students in the canteen – “macarrones con tomate y tortilla de patatas con ensalada”. It was a really fantastic day and all students felt very proud having stepped outside of their comfort zone and spoken Spanish without notes, books or too much help. ¡Lo pasamos bomba y tenemos ganas de volver! (We had a great time and we are looking forward to going back!).

It was an opportunity to take part in combined curriculum activity. A total of 90 students enjoyed some extraordinary paintings by the artist from Malaga (Spain).

Art students obtained a better knowledge of the techniques used by Picasso and learned some new facts about Spanish culture. They also described some of the amazing paintings

SOAS University It was a very interesting class and taught me many things about my own language. The second class was where we learnt about another language that we were not familiar with, the university offered languages such as Swahili, Turkish and Burmese.

The Year 9 trip to SOAS University was a memorable experience which enlightened on the vast range of languages that can be studied. The trip entailed going to 2 taster classes, a workshop and then a tour around the campus.

After the tour around campus, we had a workshop where we could ask questions to the university students that had offered to help out. I think this was a very important part of the day as it allowed us to be more insightful towards what university life is like and what can be studied. There were many interesting question such as ‘Why choose SOAS?’ or ‘How much are university fees?’ which the student answered very informatively.

My day at the French Institute The day started off by coming to school, getting in our groups and then travelling to the Institute. After getting there, we were split into 2 groups and started the workshop. The activities we did were linked to the movie that we were going to watch at the end of the day. We talked about the different types of school related objects and how they were said in French, before moving on to talking about the movie.

The movie, Les Héritiers, was based on a true story, and the writer of the script for the movie was also part of the cast. The story was about a class of students that had low grades and bad behaviour and how their teacher had a project for them where they had to enter a competition called Concours national de la Resistance et de la Deportation (National Contest of Resistance and Deportation) with the theme of “Children and adolescents under the Nazi Regime” and had to make a presentation based on that theme. We saw 2 trailers of the film and then we had to do some activities based on what we saw.

After that, we had lunch then the 2 groups came back together and we watched the film. Without revealing any spoilers about the film, I can say that it is an emotional rollercoaster. At the beginning the kids were misbehaving and had low grades, but as they started learning about the subject for the project, they started coming together as a class, and learned about the difficulties that children and teens Muslims, Jews, Gypsies, and Homosexuals - faced during the war as they were prosecuted and made to work for their lives. The film also included a Holocaust survivor, at which point the whole film took on a sad tone as Leon Zyguel told the story of how they got transported to the camps and how he lost his father.

All in all, the day was an amazing opportunity that I had greatly enjoyed. The film was eye-opening, and a fantastic piece of cinematography, and I recommend for all to watch.

This year I, along with a group of around 60 other Year 10 students, was asked to participate in a workshop for the Jack Petchey Speak Out! Challenge. This was a project started by Sir Jack Petchey to have young people speak about something they felt passionate about.

After a night of research and an eagerness that came with anticipation to take part in such a new type of challenge, the first training session began. At first, as with many other situations in which public speaking is involved, the other students and I felt nervous about the whole process, and some even wondered why they were there. During the session we told short stories about ourselves to be eased into the idea of speaking in front of a group of 30 of our peers.

After hearing stories from when we were younger, talking about desert islands, and going through the key components of an effective speech, we began to plan out our own speeches for the final challenge of the day. Every participant was due to give a short speech about their chosen topic so that two students from the group could be chosen to represent our school in the regional competition.

I chose to write mine about a very sensitive and trivial matter gun violence. After the massacre in Florida, I felt the passionate need to speak out about the injustices American students were forced to undergo in a place where they should have felt safe. A place you are probably reading this in now.

The time had come to give our speeches to our groups. Nerves had settled in and every student felt the pressure of the challenging albeit friendly competition. The minutes flew by as each speech was given, every word of each one intriguing me.

As I awaited my turn, I thoroughly enjoyed the speeches given by my peers and friends and wished them the best of luck. At last, it was time.

As I stood at the front and scanned the audience, I was greeted by a sea of supportive and familiar faces, which put me at ease during the speech. The nerves and excitement overcame me as I carefully said each of my words, and I ended it with a feeling of pride and exhilaration. I did not expect to be chosen to have the chance to represent our school, as my peers had done such amazing jobs the decision was sure to be very difficult. But when my name was called I was excited. I was going to be able to speak out about something so important to me and many others. My journey had only just begun.

After making some changes, working closely with staff, and passing the second round of the challenge, the day of the regional final raced towards me. I practised my speech over and over with my peers and mentors. Entering the waiting room with the other participants from the other schools was unforgettable.

This had suddenly become more real and the nerves kicked in again. But, with the support of the other competitors, the mentors, and the knowledge that this was a learning experience, we all went over the key information for the night and revisited the topics of the first workshop.

Looking out at the audience before I spoke, I smiled. I knew that everything I had done up to this point was to the best of my ability. Delivering my speech was an inexplicable experience I will never be able to forget. Yes, I nervous. Yes, I was scared.

Yes, I was worried. But above all of that, I was thrilled to have experience such an incredible series of events that led to this very performance. Before I knew it, my speech ended and applause rang out across the hall. I could see my friends and peers smiling back at me as I stepped off the stage and finally breathed. I was proud, and (apparently) I had good reason to be.

As the winning speeches were announced, no sour taste was left in anyone’s mouths. Every single one of us was overjoyed at how the event went and we were all extremely excited for the winners.

Afterwards, as the ‘congratulations’ and hugs flooded in, I knew that I had done well and was proud of the result.

I didn’t win. I didn’t get second place, nor did I get third. I never found out. And I don’t need to.

When I was told about this opportunity, I was thrilled. My ambition in life is to make a difference and this was the perfect medium to portray that. I thoroughly believe that I did what I set out to do, as many of my peers came back to me to explain their thoughts on the topic of my speech. Our borough’s MP Lyn Brown approached me after the speech was given, as she was present during the event. Although she hadn’t seen the speech, she knew what I spoke about and expressed her desire to work closely with me to talk about strategies to reduce knife crime in the U.K. and

I would like to thank Ms. Sahebdin for introducing me to and supporting me throughout the competition; Mr. Begley and Ms. Bibi for helping perform and improve the speech; Zaynah Ali, last year’s regional finalist for Newham and former Sarah Bonnell student who gave me top tips and extra confidence; Fiona Whytehead, our group’s mentor who gave me the drive and confidence to compete; and my peers, who were so supportive and kind during the whole experience, helping me through it all.

To the students who may try this in the future, I urge you to make the most of the opportunity. It truly is life changing and is something you will never forget or regret. I wish every future participant the best of luck!

A few more practises, sandwiches, and friendly conversations later, we were ready to compete. Friends, family, and staff sat in the audience behind us while we stared at the stage in apprehension. I sat and watched each speech made by my peers and felt pride for each one of them. Everyone had worked hard and everyone deserved the win. But slowly the lone got shorter and before I knew it it was time for me to perform. Being the

Hearing this helped me realise that what I had done was enough.

Even though I didn’t win a trophy or plaque, I was given the opportunity to make a difference and help others do the same.

The satisfaction I felt and the knowledge that I made people think and feel strongly about such important things was the biggest prize I could ever have asked for. I am incredibly proud of the winners of the event, as well as all of the other competitors, who made the experience so much more enjoyable with their kind and supportive natures.

Debate Mate and What Next?

Ashanti from year 9 talks about her experience in being part of Debate Mate and how it has enabled her to articulate her points across as well as gaining some new skills. Safer Internet Day

and statistics, which I know will benefit, my fellow students and I, later in life. In addition to that, debating has helped me to articulate my words more and has exceeded my English, which is obviously a skill we are all going to have to take with us to the outside world. It is a pleasure to have been given the opportunity to voice my opinions in an assertive way in the sense that you may not always agree with the motion you have been given. It has also enabled me to express my feelings and beliefs with other students while considering their points as well. Whether I agreed with statements given or not, debating opened up my mind and questioned my way of thinking as it allowed me to see things from various points of views. This is important in life as we will learn that not everybody will feel and think the same as you do however, this has set a foundation for us to be able to have discussions without conflict.

Safer internet day was celebrated at Sarah Bonnell School.

Different year groups were involved in activities relating to how to stay safe online. Our Digital Leaders ran a whole day of activities for all 270 Year 7 students. During the day we were visited by OFSTED, who praised our digital leaders and the quality of workshops and activities that were being led by them.

During the inspection ‘digital leaders’ were teaching Year 7 pupils about the dangers of social media. Legacy Youth Voice Do you have what it takes to be the voice of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park?

Applications for Legacy Youth Voice were given out to interested year 10 students and Year 10 students in the Scholarship Programme. The Legacy Youth Voice is dedicated in representing the views of young people in East London, engaging in plans for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and inspiring young people to get involved.

One lucky student who was selected to be part of LYV tells us about her experience of the year so far and the impact it has had on her.

What an awesome year it has been at Legacy Youth Voice as for the first time I was able to have an opportunity to have my say in my local community. Most of the work that I have done with LYV has boosted my confidence and enabled me to improve and gain a variety of skills. I have been able

to work with others as part of a team and sharing ideas and plans. It has improved my organisation skills and also helped me reduce school stress. Being part of LYV has had a positive impact on me as I have met a lot of new people from different backgrounds and culture that today create East London’s youth.

Online Safety Sessions

What have we been involved in?

We have been part of many projects such as the new site that is going to be built in the Olympic Park known as Stratford Waterfront.

We have also had the opportunity to develop more understanding about various educational companies and universities that will be coming into the Olympic Park for our youth. It has been a great experience so far and I’m looking forward to the event that will be held “The Great get Together” where legacy youth voice will help and enjoy with the public the culture and life that makes East London.

OFSTED 2018

As part of the Digital Leaders role in school we have created sessions for students to learn more about online safety. Students who have been in trouble with online safety issues are invited to attend our sessions in order to gain a better understanding of how to stay safe and to ensure you always have a positive digital footprint. These sessions run termly and have been a great success this year.

Childnet praise our Digital leaders online Childnet Digital Leaders from Sarah Bonnell School in London educate their peers using outstanding alternative education strategies and demonstrate how the Digital Leaders Programme can transform online safety provision in schools.

Digital Leaders from Sarah Bonnell School in London invited some of Childnet’s Digital Leaders staff team to visit their school in order to showcase how they have used the programme to make a difference to their peers.

The Digital Leaders have created a series of interactive workshops known as “Alternative Education Facility” designed to educate students who have been reprimanded for poor online behaviour as well as students who have been negatively affected by something which has happened online.

Students commit to attend three separate online safety workshops to learn about Social Media, Digital Footprints

and Cyberbullying. Each session is led by the Digital Leaders and begins with some ground rules, aims and learning objectives for the students, followed by a presentation containing videos, quizzes and scenariobased tasks.

The Digital Leaders Team from Sarah Bonnell School have demonstrated how the Digital Leaders Programme online training empowers young people to educate and support their peers, and also to make amazing contributions towards online safety curriculum in schools.

A ‘Girls’ Attitudes’ survey conducted by the Girl Guides Association in 2017 revealed that, despite many advances in gender equality over the last 100 years, 30% of girls still think that Computing is a ‘boys subject’.

At Sarah Bonnell we take great pride in encouraging all our students to Aim High and develop their knowledge and understanding of all subjects and STEAM week helps us promote an interest and enjoyment in subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

The STEAM team organised some fantastic lunchtime workshops: Art had an amazing time looking at photography and light. Science had fun with balloons and eating nails. Maths celebrated Pi day with some bracelet making and a Pi hunt around the school. Computing competed in the annual engineering project by FARADAY and Technology ran a workshop on iPhone hologram making. Here’s to SB students becoming the engineers, scientists and coders of the future Huge thank you to all the STEAM teachers at Sarah Bonnell School that made this all possible.

Sarah Bonnell hosted another FARADAY on the 15th March 2018. 15 year 8 students were selected to take part in this event. Our students were competing against 2 other schools to create a device using micro bits. Overall a very successful event with our students being invited to present their designs at the summer showcase at the IET.

Faraday @SBS

On Tuesday 27 March, despite torrential rain, Year 7 had the opportunity to see how their rocket cars performed in a speed race organised by the Royal Army. A rocket was placed in each of the model cars and the girls were able to see them zoom off. The winning team were SSSAH with a speed of 37.5ms. Congratulations to these girls, who were invited to race their new model car at the regional finals on the 10th May. Well done to Ms Adel, Ms Sahebdin and Ms Budhia for organising such a positive experience for Year 7.

Royal Military Academy 15 KS3 students were invited to attend a women in engineering event at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. This was an amazing opportunity for students to see what it’s like to work in the Military as a woman. They listened to key note female role models in the army and what jobs are available to them. Students were then visiting many stalls which promote STEM. Students were engaged and enlightened with all the new information given to them. We were also very happy to see one of our Sarah Bonnell School leavers there! She was a soldier at Sandhurst and she spoke to the girls about her experiences at Sarah Bonnell and life after Sarah Bonnell.

will.i.am book signing Sarah Bonnell Students had the exclusive opportunity to meet will.i.am at his book signing. Will.i.am wrote a book to encourage girls into coding and engineering. On the release date our students were invited to purchase his book and get it signed. Our students were very excited to see him and to have the chance to speak to him about their love of coding and computing.

Year 7 Pantomime Visit On Tuesday 9th January 2018, our Year 7 students attended a trip to the Theatre Royal Stratford East to see Rapunzel.

Pooja Ghai’s production was a brilliant adaptation of the traditional fairytale, bringing the story of Rapunzel into a dystopian, and sometimes modern world. The play was absolutely hilarious and our students thoroughly enjoyed singing along and participating in the Pantomime.

One of the most memorable characters was ‘Muma Bear’ played by Juliet Okotie’s – Muma Bear was a larger than life character, most notably when mimicking other characters. Any time she interacted with other characters she would take on a sarcastic and sassy tone, causing the audience to roar with laughter.

Drama Curriculum Area and Year 7 Team

The Globe Educational Visit On Friday 9th March 2018, 130 Year 9 drama students attended a trip to the Globe Theatre on London’s Southbank.

A selection of students also attended the trip as a reward for their progress with the accelerated reader programme. This provided students with an exciting opportunity to watch a live theatre performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in one of the world’s most spectacular theatres!

Shakespeare’s Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse that was originally built in 1599, destroyed by fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614, and then demolished in 1644. The Globe Theatre was built to replicate the original features of the first playhouse, for example, it has an open-air arena.

The production was full to the brim with songs, slapstick comedy and powerful performances by actors!

International Women’s Day Extended Learning Day

Barbican Box Project

On Tuesday 8th March the whole Year 8 cohort took part in a ‘Play in a Day’ as part of the International Women’s Day Extended Learning Day.

Students devised their own performance by using a box with a range of stimuli inside created by famous writer Fin Kennedy.

The students explored the play Kindertransport by Diane Samuels which examines the life, during World War II and afterwards, of a Kindertransport child. Though fictitious, it is based upon many real kindertransport stories.

Students explored the inspirational, resilient female characters within Samuel’s play.

During the performance evening, students showcased their work with schools from across London and their performance of ‘Boost’ was full of energy and some impressive comical moments. We are very proud of the students involved!

Students took part in actor workshops throughout the day in order to develop their vocal and physical theatrical skills and performances were shared from each form at the end of the day. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 8 cohort for their engagement and participation in the day. You made us very proud!

On Tuesday 13th March our Sarah Bonnell Players’ Drama Club performed at the Barbican Pit Theatre as part of the prestigious ‘Barbican Box Project’.

Women’s FA Cup Final

Year 11 Theatre Trip

I believe the day was amazing, due to the staff, students and workers at Wembley stadium.

The journey to the stadium went swiftly and on the way there, the amount of people around was mind-blowing, so we had to make sure we stuck together to make sure no-one got lost! The first queue that we joined had unfortunately been the wrong one, but with the help of the workers at the stadium we were able to find the right queue and head inside.

On Thursday 29th March we took the Year 11 GCSE Drama cohort to see the thrilling production of The Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre in London’s West End as part of the GCSE Drama course.

The production, directed by Robin Herford, tells the spine chilling story of Arthur Kipps (played by Terence Wilton) who wants to share a terrifying secret from his past about a mystery Woman in Black. He struggles to tell the tale alone, so hires an actor (played by James Byng) to share his story with their audience in this ‘play within a play’. The production has been running for an impressive 28 years and its no wonder; the performances of Wilton and Byng had our students gripped from start to finish!

Year 10 Comedy Professional Actor Workshop On Tuesday 12th June professional actor Andrew Roberts-Mudie led a performance workshop with our Year 10 GCSE Drama students.

The workshop was arranged for Faythe Desousa in year 10 who won a Jack Petchey award for her commitment to extra-curricular drama clubs in the school.

Drawing upon his experience as an international performer in The Gruffalo, Andrew gave students a broad range of rehearsal strategies, leading them to develop a more meaningful understanding of how to combine voice and movement within comedy performances.

Faythe Desousa commented that “The comedy workshop created a real buzz in the drama studio. We all came out of our shells and entered a new world of comedy. Andy showed us step-by-step how he creates some of his comical characters on stage. We all created characters that were different to ourselves. Everyone had a smile on their faces and the mood very quickly changed from nerves to pure happiness!”

Fortune Theatre

As we were finding our seats the game had just started, so there was no time to spare but to sit down and enjoy the game. At the end of the first half of the game neither Chelsea or Arsenal had scored, even when Chelsea was given a penalty shot which we were certain would result in a goal.

The second half of the game was much more action packed with Chelsea being able to score two great goals.

Following this Arsenal had scored an amazing goal, which was good for the majority of people sitting next to us as they were Arsenal fans. With a close scoreline the match was getting really exciting. Adding on to the score next was a fantastic shot by Chelsea. The game then ended, and the score was 3-1 to Chelsea.

We had stayed a bit after the game to watch the celebration of the Chelsea team receiving their medals and then lifting the FA Cup. I believe that this trip was an amazing experience to watch world class female athletes and it had been an amazing day thanks to the teachers.

Year 9

The year 7 Rounders team has gotten off to an outstanding start to the season.

The year 9 Rounders team have once again shown excellent commitment to their rounders with strong numbers from the very first week’s practice.

With a close 10-8 loss in the opening game against Bobby Moore Academy, the girls turned up to practice determined to improve and walked away with a victory against Lister the following week. There are plenty more games to play, with opportunities for everyone to get involved in a match.

After 2 games played, the girls have won one and lost won. The team are very competitive and focussed on retaining their title of borough champions. Watch this space!

District Athletics On the 22nd of May, Sarah Bonnell competed in the Newham Borough Athletics competition.

Throughout the day a selected number of students from the year group took part in a range of events against other schools in the borough.

It was a day full of high hopes and motivation; as the sun shone down on the track, and the day progressed, it was clear that everyone enjoyed a day outside their classrooms, representing the school.

It was also a very successful day across all year groups, seeing many qualify for the final in their event. There were several stand-out performers from the day; in Year 7 Vanyaza Quaresma achieved 1st place in 800m, Tracy Amoh achieved 1st place in Javelin and Mia Mulvaney- Saibu also achieved first place in Discus.

In addition, Year 8, 9 and 10 also came 2nd place in the whole competition.

Overall, we saw an amazing effort from everyone who participated which led to some great results for the school. We are so proud of everyone who participated and cannot wait until next year’s competition.

Netball season

Inclusive Cricket

Year 7

Year 8

The year 7 Netball team have had an incredibly successful first year playing netball. The turnout to club has been exceptional with 18 girls attending on a regular basis. The team played a couple of friendlies in the build up to the borough rally at the end of the season. This culminated in an excellent performance from all of the girls finishing a very respectable 4th place overall. The enthusiasm and commitment from the year 7’s has been phenomenal and if the girls can demonstrate the same work ethic next year, they are capable of winning some trophies.

The Year 8 Netball team have had a fantastic season and finished second in the Borough league. They only narrowly missed out on 1st place position due to a goal difference! They displayed excellent commitment, teamwork and a hard working ethic and I am very proud of the team. Well done to the following girls:

Year 9 The year 9 Netball team had a difficult start at the beginning of the season, however, as the season progressed they were able to overcome the difficulties they faced. They started the league off with a fantastic 7-2 win against Cumberland School. This gave the students the motivation and commitment to come training every week, which resulted in them making fantastic progress and having a great team atmosphere.

The girls also finished on a high by winning their last match 9-2 against East London Science School. Their commitment to training and resilience to overcome any difficulties was reflected in the league results. The girls finished a fantastic 2nd overall in the Borough.

Year 10 The senior Netball team had a fantastic start to the season with over 20 girls turning up to the weekly after school club to find their perfect position in upcoming fixtures. With a strong 18-2 over Cumberland being a highlight of the season, our other results highlighted areas that we needed to improve and this was very beneficial for everyone involved in the team. With a number of the team attending a Netball residential at the start of October this year - we are looking forward to carrying forward the success and targets from last season in September.

Trampolining On Friday the 23rd of March I took part in inter-form trampolining. This is the first year that Sarah Bonnell has had trampolining as an inter-form and the turn out from each year group was amazing! In the lead-up to the competition we got to practice during Gymnastics club on Thursday lunchtimes and Trampolining club on a Friday after school - this meant that we could alter and perfect our routine (whilst also seeing who our competitors were).

Students of all abilities came to these practices to have a go at something new, and many of the younger years had never done trampolining before and found it to be a fun and exciting new sport.

Each form class could enter an individual and synchronised routine. I entered the year 10 synchronised routine with my partner Aliyah. We had been given a set routine, however we were allowed to adapt it to display our strengths, which is exactly what we did. We kept adapting the routine to ensure that we would stand out from the other competitors. Although practices could be extremely frustrating at times when we couldn’t quite get our routine right, all the hard work paid off in the end as we were able to come first in the year 10 synchronised competition.

Even though I was wary of entering this interform, as trampolining has never really been a strong suit of mine, I’m proud to have competed alongside Aliyah and to win for our form.

This year Sarah Bonnell entered the Newhams Inclusive Cricket tournament with a hope to represent Newham at Lords later in the year.

With numerous students excited to get involved, we took 10 girls across to Lister to demonstrate our Cricket skills. Going in with a strong and prepared team we faced Lister in the first match. Unfortunately Lister’s fast bowling and strong fielding were a little better than we expected and after some great sportsmanship they walked away with the victory.

In the following matches against St Angelas and Jo Richardson the team continuously improved but unfortunately did not walk away with a win.

A big thank you to the A+I team who helped recruit players and supported the girls on the day, a great time was had by everyone involved!

Inclusive Athletics On Thursday 7th June Sarah Bonnell took 10 students to Newham Athletics Stadium to take part in the Inclusive Borough Athletics Competition.

The aim of the trip was to give students the opportunity to do events they have never done before but also to try out for the London Youth Games. All the girls had the opportunity to work with experience coaches developing their throwing, jumping and running skills, finishing off with some relay races.

All the girls had a fantastic time and had smiles on their faces from start to finish. Their enthusiasm and motivation was so infectious that all the teachers could not stop praising them.

All the girls were presented with a certificate and medal for their effort and enthusiasm at the end of the day. Njeri received a trophy for her continuous effort and motivation throughout the day. Azraa said: “I liked the throwing events.

I felt marvellous and it was a really good day”.
