Headteacher's Welcome Dear Students, Parents, Staff and Governors, Thank you for everything you have done to make Spring Term 2022 really successful and rewarding. In this issue of the Sarah Bonnell News you will read about the many different ways our students make the most of the opportunities on offer at the school. These different experiences are an important part of our school curriculum and add to the learning taking place in lessons to develop students' understanding of the world around them and build their confidence and character even further. This term has also been a great term for the Newham Community Schools’ Trust. Working in partnership with Lister, Rokeby and Eastlea we have taken part in two cross-trust reviews led by independent consultants. One of the reviews focussed on Relationships, Sex and Health Edcuation and the other review focussed on Safegaurding. Both highlighted lots of great work being done across all our schools in these areas and highlighted ways in which we can learn from each other to further improve our approach. The Trust is also going into another exciting phase of its development as we consult over a merger with another successful Newham trust made up of Portway and Selwyn Primary schools - Leading Learning Trust. I look forward to being able to share more news about this in the Summer Term. In the meantime I hope you all have a wonderful Spring Break and happy reading!
CHESS WITH JENNIFER SHAHADE On Friday 4 March Ms Potter, Headteacher, and Mr Begley, Assistant Headteacher, gathered together 30 budding Chess players to meet Jennifer Shahade . Jennifer is two times US Women's Chess Champion and Grandmaster and she inspired them with her own success story and stories about other trailblazing ‘chess queens‘. Jennifer also gave each student a signed copy of her book of the same name about the gender stereotypes women face in the chess world and the brilliance of the great female Grandmasters of chess like Vera Menchek and the Polgar sisters. The students were given a masterclass in the game and used the skills they had gained in playing each other. The school would like to thank Jennifer for inspiring the girls with her visit and to thank Alex O’Brien for her generous sponsorship of the event - buying the school 30 new chess sets and a copy of Jennifer Shahade’s interesting book ‘Chess Queens’ for every student.
HOLLY BRADSHAW 15 students across year 7-9 had an amazing opportunity to attend a virtual session with GB Olympic athlete Holly Bradshaw. They learned about her journey, lifestyle, challenges she had faced and how she overcame them. They rounded the session up with a great question and answer session. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to hear from an inspirational female. - Ms Barnard "I learned no matter what, always follow your dreams and to be confident. I also learnt to not be afraid to try new things." - Mia "I learned that Holly likes to make coffee and loves to make Latte art in her spare time. I also learned that when she was younger she did several sports including netball and football like myself. She was very relatable and open about her experiences." - Arzu "I really enjoyed learning about the behind the scenes of an Olympic athlete, as well as how Holly can relate to different sports. She was very inspirational for other girls." - Usra
GREENHOUSE TENNIS As we enter into the Spring, we have 85 students signed up to the Greenhouse tennis programme. We now have morning clubs twice a week beginning at 7.30am and it’s brilliant to see their commitment. Some students are now playing with the yellow adult ball and progressing their game to new heights. I have seen such a difference in their social skills, confidence and discipline to achieve a goal. Tennis has also bought together a range of participants from Year 7-11 who I see socialising around the school on a regular basis. What we are building is exceeding tennis. - Mr Sippy
LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated annually in February and this year Sarah Bonnell students learnt about the lives of LGBTQ+ people in assemblies. Students shared their research into the lives of diverse LGBTQ+ people throughout history and explored the history of the rainbow flag. Mr Bentley introduced the assembly and Ms Bibi spoke about the importance of allyship, visibility and the value of solidarity, with different groups of people standing up for each other. Students in Be Proud Club also had the opportunity to learn about and discuss LGBTQ+ issues - both contemporary and historical. Linking with our school’s focus on diversity, we considered the importance of both intersectionality and social justice.

WORLD HIJAB DAY 2022
On Tuesday 1st February 2022, we were proud to celebrate our first World Hijab Day at Sarah Bonnell, exploring this year’s theme: “Break the Bias” and ‘Hijab is my Crown.’ During the week, Ms Sahebdin along with students from Year 7-11 delivered an incredibly inspiring assembly. Ms Sahebdin shared her personal and moving story about how hijab originally became part of Sarah Bonnell School’s uniform and students clearly articulate why we celebrated World Hijab Day and how it promoted our Sarah Bonnell Motto: Be Proud. A range of activities were held at lunchtime where students and teachers supported World Hijab Day by creating and holding up pledges and adorning hijabs and crowns. - Ms Bibi & Ms Sahebdin Shoutout: Ms Harvey & our students for the amazing display!

NETBALL FIXTURES
It has been a fantastic start to the netball club, having not been able to run a netball club for the past 2 years due to the pandemic. The turnout has been great with over 40 students attending every week across the 5 year groups. All 5 year groups have been entered into the Netball borough league and both home and away games have been played. Fantastic efforts from all netballers this season both in training and matches.
Highlights: Year 7: 6-2 win against Eastlea. They have worked amazingly well together as a new team and show great potential for future years. Year 8: The year 8’s have worked so hard with one another to win two games so far both being by 5 goals. We have been impressed by their drive and passion! Year 9: The year 9s have shown resilience and have worked well as a team. Year 10: Are looking forward to the rival Y10 v Y11 match which should be an excellent competitive match. We also have been impressed with the Y10 students who have stepped up to support the Y11’s in fixtures. Year 11: 10-5 win against Bobby Moore. It has been great to see the girls' confidence and determination improve each game. - Ms Watson & Ms Adeosun
VR Immersive Technology
Hyperactive Developments and its partners from Heritage 5G, Immersive Computing Labs and Newham Youth Empowerment delivered a series of insights into heritage and history learning with a particular focus on the industrial history of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park through the use of different 21st immersive technologies. Learning technologies included: the Metaverse, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Video Game play. Students were working in teams and experiencing the new technology. Metaverse and VR Tech. Students were asked where might technology take us next, can the future be the metaverse. Students in KS3 and KS4 were fully engaged in learning about the new technology.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2022 Thursday 3rd March saw the 25th anniversary of World Book Day. Staff and students dressed up for the day in book characters and we saw some incredible costumes. Oliver Twist, Katniss Everdeen, Alice in Wonderland, Skulduggery, Laura Ingles, Gangsta Granny, Frodo Baggins, Sherlock Holmes and Cruella De Vil to name but a few. The Learning Hub was once again the centre of the celebrations and hosted a fair made up of genre-based stalls. The Classics, Mystery, Romance, Crime and Fantasy stands were professionally run by KS3 Learning Hub Ambassadors and KS4 helpers who were just as enthused as the participants. Students had the opportunity to compete in games and activities for prizes by putting their book knowledge to the test. Battling against the clock to get as many correct answers as possible, there was a frantic rush to be the winner! WBD would not be complete without the Treasure Hunt competition which saw entries from across all year groups. The very deserving winners were Humaira Yasmin & Rodoshi Khanam Salim 11D. The design a Book Bag competition was also a success and I had the impossible task of judging the winning entries. After much deliberation our winners were Zafreen Chowdhury 8D & Kelly Ochlan 7B who will see their designs printed on book bags and distributed to the school community. As always Kindle Fires were up for grabs and all our First Prize winners received one. Our genre-based stall winners won books, badges & bookmarks along with all our SEND entrants. A great day was had by the whole school community leaving everyone look forward to World Book Day 2023! - Ms Kaur
BLOODHOUND ROCKET CAR RACE
On Tuesday 8th March Year 7 were immersed into a day of engineering and computing. Students worked alongside the Bloodhound team to build and design their own rocket cars. Students were exposed to engineering concepts and ensured their cars were the fastest. Amazing designs were being created and students can’t wait to race them on the 6th May 2022 with actual rockets! - Ms Adel
International Womens Day @ The Learning Hub The whole school community came together to celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th March. The Learning Hub was no exception and invited writer Lisa Williamson; author of the award winning book, The Art of being Normal, to visit the school. Two talks were delivered to our Year 7, 8 & 11 students on Lisa’s work as an actor as well as her aspirations to become a writer, and, ultimately achieving that. Lisa’s workshop had the girls thoroughly engaged, enthused and inspired. There were so many questions we ran out of time and were unable to answer them all! All the students wanted to buy her books so an order of 40 was raised which is testament to how much our students enjoyed the experience and to their love of reading. At lunchtime an IWD Quiz competition was run which had students searching for profiles on inspirational women, that had been pinned up at various locations in the Learning Hub, and answering questions on them. We are very happy to announce that Maha Hussain 10L won the competition and was awarded a copy of 'Becoming' by Michelle Obama. A fantastic time was had by all whilst marking a truly important day. - Ms Kaur
Y7 Student Council’s Food Bank Campaign
The Y7 student council worked incredibly hard to decide, create, launch and complete their first campaign in just 6 weeks! They were determined to find a way to help their community, and wanted to focus on the struggles that many people had faced due to the coronavirus. After settling on collecting donations for the local food bank, the students designed posters, spoke in assemblies and campaigned around school to encourage as many donations as possible. Their hard work was rewarded, with an incredible 175 items collected from members of our school community. The girls should be so proud of all their hard work and we look forward to seeing what their future successes will be, after such a triumphant first campaign. Thank you so much to everyone who donated, your generosity and keenness to help those in need was amazing to see and we appreciate you all. Keep your eyes peeled for our next campaign… Our theme is climate change! If you have any suggestions for future council campaigns, we are always keen to hear them! Year 9 Tycoons Year 9 have been working hard on their Tycoons in Business Project. Each class has been loaned £10 to create a business. A lot of classes have chosen to make handmade products to sell to other students during lunch time. Products include scrunchies, lip glosses, bracelets, rings etc.. Students will then hopefully make profit and be able to pay back the £10 loan. All profit goes to our charity UWS. - Ms Adel
Deadline: Friday 8 April 2022
The Association of British Science Writers invites school students, or those who are home schooled with disabilities and who cannot attend school in person, aged 14-16 years, to submit an 800-word essay on any subject in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics. In 2022 the competition is open to students in Glasgow, Cardiff, Birmingham and the London Borough of Newham. This is a travelling award so will be open to other areas in subsequent years.

Here is a sneak preview of one of our girls who has entered the competition What if Artificial Intelligence contributed to making political decisions? Firstly, what is artificial intelligence and why would it be useful for the government? It is the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behaviour. This would be extremely useful to the government as for one, robots are more intelligent than us humans. They are machines, therefore they are smarter and think quicker than humans. A computer system is 125,000 times faster than a human brain. These are all characteristics that would be very beneficial and ideal to the government.
Enhanced Learning Day 3: Safer Internet Day On Tuesday 8 February, we held our third Enhanced Learning Day with a focus on Online Safety as part of Safer Internet Day. Our Year 7 students had a wonderful time exploring Online Safety led by the incredible 'Digital Leaders' as part of Safer Internet Day. Students explored healthy relationships whilst gaming online and how we can spot and prevent dangers of online gaming. Students had the opportunity to create their ideal online game which ensured everyone was safe and respected. A group of our KS3 SB ambassadors also took part in very meaningful leadership training. Our Year 8 students took part in the World Languages 'Days of Cinema', creating exciting films in a range of languages. A group of Italian students also had a talk with the Estorick Gallery to learn about Futurist Italian Art. They also engaged in content around online safety to carefully consider their behaviour online. A group of our KS3 SB ambassadors also took part in very meaningful leadership training. Our Year 9 students explored online safety and youth safety, hearing from inspirational speakers Councillor Carleene Lee-Phakoe and Shanea Oldham (both Sarah Bonnell Alumni). Other groups of students also took part in a range of exciting workshops including: Drama 'Chain Reaction' workshops, Future First careers workshops with SB alumni and a perfectionism workshop with our Here2Listen team. They also engaged in content around online safety to carefully consider their behaviour online. A group of our KS3 SB ambassadors also took part in very meaningful leadership training. Our Year 10 students went on a range of exciting educational visits linking to their GCSE studies including a trip to Shakespeare's Globe to explore Macbeth, A GCSE Geography Rivers trip to Epping Forest, a GCSE Business 'Museum of Brands' trip. They also engaged in content around online safety to carefully consider their behaviour online Our Year 11 students worked in subject areas including Science, Drama, Health & Social Care and PE. Our ADT students also had an exciting visit to Tate Britain as part of their GCSE course. Year 11 also heard from some phenomenal guest speakers as part of the organisation 'The Wooden Box' to consider their past experiences and what they wish for the future.They also engaged in content around online safety to carefully consider their behaviour online. - Ms Griffiths
Enhanced Learning Day 4: International Women’s Day At Sarah Bonnell School, we are a proud community that promotes equality and diversity. As part of this, we are proud to be an all-girls school championing female empowerment and sisterhood. On Tuesday 8 March we celebrated International Women's Day as part of our Enhanced Learning Day. It was wonderful to see our students engaging in such meaningful sessions and hearing about the educational visits taking place around London. Year 7 students worked with our external partner ‘Bloodhound’ to develop their engineering skills to build a strong and fast prototype for a rocket car. This exposed them to careers in STEM to #BreakTheBias in this male-dominant field. Year 8 students worked with our external partner, Bow Arts, on the themes of #Sisterhood and #BreakTheBias to create a patchwork to represent their individual identities coming together as a united sisterhood. Year 9 students went on a range of exciting educational visits to reflect on female empowerment and the theme of #BreakTheBias including visits to Shakepseare’s Globe, Tate Britain, Royal Observatory, Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, Queens House Diversity Art. Arabic students also had the opportunity to work with our external partner, Bow Arts. Year 10 students worked with our external partner, Jack Petchey, to take part in the ‘Speak Out Challenge’ where they engaged in workshops on developing communication skills and public speaking to develop their Oracy. They built arguments around topics that they are passionate about, linked to International Women’s Day and the theme #BreaktheBias. Year 11 students took part in ‘Boss Day’ where they explored careers and futures beyond Sarah Bonnell, aiming high to raise their career aspirations as women entering the workplace. In addition, students all made a #breakthebias pledge in form time, which they wore proudly on a purple rosette for the day! We also heard from our phenomenal guest speaker 'Red Medusa' who captivated the students with her speeches and poetry performances, as well as famous author Lisa Williamson who delivered an engaging KS3 and KS4 workshop. Students provided some fantastic feedback on why they found the day engaging, for example: Year 8: “My favourite part of ELD 4 was certainly when we had Red Medusa come in & tell us about her life & how she broke the bias. Her story was touching, influential & inspirational”. - Ms Griffiths
Careers Week at Sarah Bonnell
During National Careers Week, Sarah Bonnell students got to explore their future pathways thanks to a range of exciting opportunities that encouraged students to aspire to exciting and innovative future careers. On Tuesday 8th March, Year 11 worked with 15billion and Actorshop to help empower them to explore their futures and aspire to pursue their dream roles and careers. They were given the opportunity to meet with professionals from industries such as law, finance and business. We also took a group of students to Staffordshire University on Friday 11th March to explore digital careers such as Game Design, Esports, & more. ODuring this week, Year 10 students also got to meet with industry professionals as they completed their prefect interviews. A large number of students were further involved as they attended a Pinsent Masons session title ‘Purposeful Business’, careers sessions on Law and Criminology and visited UCL to attend a session on ‘How to be a Humanitarian’. KS3 students also got involved through their initiation to the Morrisby programme online. Students created their accounts, completed activities and questionnaires about their future careers and plans, and then prepared presentations on a range of new careers that they were introduced to. These sessions helped them develop their understanding of the possibilities they have for the future, and encouraged aspirational targets and goals for the future. - Mr Begley
Medical/Tech Podcast
In May 2022, scientists from around the world, who use MRI in medical research, are coming to London for an international conference (ISMRM Annual Meeting). This project will be an opportunity for students from Sarah Bonnell school to meet some of them and put their questions directly to them. They will produce a podcast (or mini-series of short packages) about this aspect of medical research, the impact that some London scientists are making, and what they want the world’s scientists to know about how young people in London view research. Nine Year 10 Sarah Bonnell students who are interested in Science & Tech will be selected for the project. There will be four sessions, all in March/April: an introductory meeting at the school, a visit to a lab in London (in three groups of three), a podcast prep meeting (online), and podcast recording session at the school. The students will work together with an experienced podcast producer and a member of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) to identify topics for the podcast, find diverse scientists from across the Society, and arrange for interviews to be recorded. The producer will also work with the students to edit the content to produce a publicly available audio podcast. - Ms Adel
Lights, Camera, Action! A magnificent round of applause to the dazzling, creative and brilliant cast and crew of Matilda for their assembly performances. Students and staff have been working on this production since the. Autumn term and have worked resiliently demonstrating the Sarah Bonnell way the whole way through. It has been an unforgettable show celebrated in a wonderful way. Congratulations to everyone involved. The backstage team have also worked very hard to create the wonderful ABC blocks and design the set in a creative way, showcasing their wonderful talent and enthusiasm for backstage theatre work. - Ms Temizsoy & Mr Slater
WomenEd Unconference @Sarah Bonnell On Saturday 12 March 2022, we were delighted to hold the WomenEd London Unconference here at Sarah Bonnell School. The day was designed to celebrate International Women’s Day, with educators across London attended to engage in workshops and speeches around the global theme this year, #BreakTheBias. The day started with a powerful welcome from our very own Headteacher, Ms Potter, who spoke about the power of the Queen in a game of chess, following our visit from professional chess player and author Jennifer Shahade. We also heard from other keynote speakers, including Ella Dove, a journalist who spoke bravely about being an amputee after a tragic accident. Two members of Sarah Bonnell staff presented at the event, Ms Bibi and Ms Griffiths, both Assistant Headteachers. Ms Griffiths commented on the day: “I am proud to be a member of WomenEd and thoroughly enjoyed the ‘unconference’ event. The WomenEd network is powerful and enables me to connect with a range of influential and inspiring women. I felt honoured to have the opportunity to deliver a workshop on Confidence, Care and Courage”. Ms Griffiths
World Languages YR8 Days of Cinema ELD Camera, Lights, Action in World Languages ELD. Sarah Bonnell students and The Italian Avant Garde Art from the 20th Century. In the Spring Term World Languages had the opportunity to celebrate languages in the most fun and creative way by taking the learning out of the lesson. In February the whole Year 8 cohort dropped their exercise books and became actors, directors, script writers, costume designers and camera operators in the ELD event Days Of Cinema. During the whole morning and part of the afternoon the students adapted scenes of three famous movies (Despicable Me, Padington and Slumdog Millionaire) and remade them using the languages studied in the school. Students worked hard to translate the dialogues in Mandarin, Urdu, Arabic, French, Italian and Spanish. Then they learned and rehearsed the lines under the supervision of one student as a film director. A dynamic and creative team of designers made gorgeous costumes with the most unconventional materials. Ready to perform and under the camera team, many scenes came to live. The clips recorded were amazing and “BAFTA quality”. Well done, Year 8.
Sarah Bonnell Students and the Italian Avant Garde Art from the 20th Century.
The lucky students of Italian had the chance to take part in the afternoon in a virtual workshop with the Italian Estorick Art Gallery in London. Students were learning about some 20th Century Italian Avant Garde artists. They created their own pieces of art inspired by that artistic trend from the previous century. The engagement was superb and the lecturer was amazed by the intelligent questions asked by the students at Sarah Bonnell as well as by the work created. Carlos Munoz, WL Curriculum Leader.
On Friday 25th February a group of aspiring Year 8 engineers took part in the annual Faraday competition. Students were tasked to create a product that would help children in hospital feel comfortable. There were many designs created and the students' imagination and creativity was incredible to see. There was ofcourse a winning group who received £10 shopping vouchers, certificates and the winning trophy for the school! Well done to all who participated in this amazing event. - Ms Adel
On Tuesday the 15th March 2022 Year 9 students were involved in a brand new DeepMind Artificial Intelligence technology workshop. Students were thinking about Ai Technology and how this has an impact on our everyday lives. They were also tasked to create solutions for everyday situations we face everyday such as ‘waste management’. Year 9 coded and tested robots which could hold and lift cans, bottles and paper cups. Students were fully engaged in the workshop and enjoyed the robots and live lab tour they had of the DeepMind head office. - Ms Adel
LITERACY / READING Raising achievement through a focus on reading has been central this year across SBS. As part of this, all staff have undertaken professional learning based on reading. We’ve considered disciplinary literacy and strategies for whole class reading, and every student is supported to be a successful reader within their subjects. To help students further develop a love of reading, each year group has been reading during form time. Progress leaders carefully selected a book that students could enjoy and explore. Year 7 have been reading ‘Before We Were Free’ by Julia Alvarez, Year 8 have been reading ‘This Book is Anti-Racist’ by Tiffany Jewell, Year 9 have been reading ‘Be Resilient’ by Nicola Morgan, Year 10 have been reading ‘Empress and Aniya’ by Candice Carty-Williams, and Year 11 have been reading ‘Purple Hibiscus’ by Chimimanda Adichie. Reading each week as part of form time allows students to explore key vocabulary, engage in whole class reading as well as undertake discussions based on the key ideas and themes of the book. Most importantly, it helps students develop lifelong reading skills to make sure they’re successful at SBS and in the world beyond. - Ms Malik
NEWHAM CITIZENS - YOUTH SAFETY CAMPAIGN CHAMPIONS Our Youth Safety Campaign Champions have continued to show commitment and drive in their aims to promote social justice to improve Youth Safety in Newham. On 1 February, the Youth Safety team presented at the Newham Delegates Assembly with St Bonaventure’s and New Vic College students in front of 160 people. Aaliyah, Mauricette and Rahima in Year 10 represented the team as they shared their experience and views on youth safety. Their delivery was incredibly moving and captivating. We are proud to reveal that out of the four issues presented, Youth Safety was voted the top priority ask. Our team will be taking forward their views to the Mayor Assembly in April. We also held an NCST Youth Safety workshop here at Sarah Bonnell where students from Rokeby, Lister Eastlea and Sarah Bonnell shared their experiences with youth safety and the projects they have been working on. - Ms Griffiths

Urdu students visit to British Museum "I was very excited to see the Asian History section. I was able to learn more about the richness of my culture and heritage. I was able to watch short films about the the and even got to see a fine gold sari!"
