It’s official. Charles is Britain’s first king in 70 years. The Accession Council Saturday proclaimed King Charles III the monarch of the United Kingdom. (He’s also the monarch for independent Commonwealth nations who have chosen to maintain their ceremonial ties with Britain.) The proclamation happened during a ceremony at St. James’ Palace in London, and this was the first time the ancient ceremony has been televised. Afterward, the new king greeted members of the public outside Clarence House in London. The ceremony made official what already was fact: Charles became king immediately after Queen Elizabeth II’s death on Thursday.

And Prince William issued a statement Saturday about the queen, saying “the world lost an extraordinary leader.” “She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life,” William said. “I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real.” In another development, Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, swore her allegiance to King Charles III and his heirs and successors. And here in California, the British rock band Duran Duran started their Los Angeles concert Friday night with a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The band honored Her Majesty as it performed its 1982 single “Save a Prayer.” email: dmason@newspress.com

Children’s Resource & Referral of Santa Barbara County celebrated its 50th anniversary Friday with a big party that raised approximately $40,000. The celebration was a 1970s-style birthday party — a fun-filled event, live auction and fundraiser at the historic Santa Maria Inn. “It went well,” Jacqui Banta, CRR’s chief operating officer, told the News-Press Saturday. “We had about 100 people come including Supervisor Gregg Hart, Goleta City Councilman James Kyriaco, and other lovely community partners. The weather held out as well, which was great.” “We were celebrating our 50th year in service to children and families in Santa Barbara County,” Ms. Banta said. “It was a full ’70s theme from gold glitter

to disco balls and tie-dyed flower centerpieces. The night ended with a ’70s dance floor. “Live auction items included: skydiving in Lompoc, wine tasting in Solvang and other lovely overnight auction packages,” said Ms. Banta. CRR was incorporated in 1971, and the 50th anniversary celebration was originally planned for last year, but Ms. Banta said it had to be delayed because of COVID-19. On Friday, CRR celebrated its history of helping children. For 50 years, CRR has served the most vulnerable, at-risk children and prioritizes such services to foster children and families with a vision that all children will have access to high-quality, safe, nurturing and inclusive environments. Inmate dies at jail near Santa Maria

By KATHERINE ZEHNDER NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Kristina Marie Chermak, 35, of Santa Barbara — an inmate at the Northern Branch Jail — died Friday night at the Santa Barbara County facility near Santa Maria. Her death occurred at 10:48 p.m. Ms. Chermak was arrested by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office in Isla Vista on March 5 on suspicion of burglary (a felony) and possession of stolen property (a misdemeanor). Ms. Chermak was ordered by the court to remain in custody pending transportation to the Department of State Hospitals for restoration of mental competency to stand trial. At approximately 10:04 p.m. Friday, custody deputies conducted a security check of Ms. Chermak’s cell, where she was housed alone and noted no issues, according to Raquel Zick, the Sheriff’s Office public information officer. At approximately 10:27 p.m., a nurse distributing medication

noticed Ms. Chermak was unresponsive. Ms. Zick said staff immediately began attempts to resuscitate Ms. Chermak and called for an emergency medical response. Wellpath Medical, County Fire and American Medical Response all responded. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and Ms. Chermak was declared dead. Coroner’s detectives are investigating this death. Consistent with standard procedures for the sheriff’s office, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau and Administrative Investigation team were called in to investigate the circumstances of this jail death, Ms. Zick said. She said the death does not appear suspicious, but the cause of death is not immediately obvious and will require an autopsy to assist in the determination. Ms. Zick said Ms. Chermak’s next-of-kin have been notified. \email: kzehnder@newspress.com
