10 ways to keep social distance and still have a social life Physical distance doesnít mean personal isolation

“We still need to wash our hands a lot. We still need to keep our hands off our face. We still need the social distance,” said Dr. Charles Fenzi, CEO and chief medical officer of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics. He’s seen in this 2017 photo.

r. Charles Fenzi has never seen a global public health crisis in his lifetime as severe as COVID-19. “The one thing that compares to it is the 1918 Spanish flu,” said Dr. Fenzi, CEO and chief medical officer of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, where two people have tested positively for confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday. He said 29 people have been tested at the clinics, which have taken steps to protect staff and patients and are doing many exams through Zoom video chats on smart phones and computers. He said 26 patients tested negatively and that one test is pending. The clinics, which are in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Isla Vista, serve 22,000 patients a year who are at 200 percent of the federal poverty level or lower, Dr. Fenzi said. He stressed the need for social distancing as cases grow and even after they start to decline. “I think the peak is going to hit (in California) somewhere around the end of April or the beginning of May and settle down after that,” he said, citing projections by researchers. Dr. Fenzi said circumstances will improve if people

become better at staying at least 6 feet from each other. “I think the better we do with social distancing, the flatter the curve is going to get and the fewer people are going to die.” He said he’s concerned when he sees individuals such as young people cluster together as they walk down a street. “I watched that on Milpas Street.” “I think a lot of people got a false sense of security when it looked like it was older people who were going to be in trouble,” he said. “Many of the folks my age hunkered down and didn’t go out and took it seriously. But you’ve seen the videos of Florida during spring break. Young people at that time didn’t take it seriously because they didn’t think it was going to hit them. “I remember when I was that age, I didn’t think anything was going to happen to me,” Dr. Fenzi said, emphasizing the need for people of all ages to maintain social distancing even when cases begin to decline. “That is going to prevent us from going back up.” Dr. Fenzi said he thinks the public overall is doing well with social

distancing with some exceptions such as reports he has heard of crowding at local beaches. “But I think people are really trying to do the right thing.” He noted pedestrians need to be careful about something else as they practice social distancing. “As I’m coming to work, I see people walking, and people are actually going out in the streets to avoid the other person so they can maintain that 6 feet. I just hope they don’t get run over by a car.” Dr. Fenzi said he is impressed with efforts by grocery stores to mark 6-feet intervals with tape on the floor for checkout lines. He noted stores have installed plastic shields to protect employees interacting with customers at the checkout stands. He said workers also are taking cautions such as wearing gloves and washing

their hands with a sanitizer between each encounter with a customer. And he praised customers who are wearing masks in case they are, without their knowledge, asymptomatic carriers of COVID19. He also discussed steps at the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics to protect staff and patients. “Everybody is wearing masks and gloves the whole time they’re in the clinic, anytime that they’re having contact with a patient,” Dr. Fenzi said, noting that the clinics have received N95 masks from Goleta-based Direct Relief. Dr. Fenzi also said patients are getting screened at the front door of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics. “We have a little desk by the entrance where patients get screened with this community protocol screening tool.” If people do OK during the initial screening, they’re fitted with a mask and allowed to enter the waiting room, where chairs are kept 6 feet apart, Dr. Fenzi said. He noted that concern about crowded waiting rooms of sick

people was one of the reasons the number of patients coming to the clinics dropped by 50 percent immediately after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order to shelter in place. He also noted people were also making sincere efforts to follow the order. Dr. Fenzi explained that patients who score high enough on the Santa Neighborhood Clinics’ front-door screening protocol to warrant caution are given an appointment for later in the afternoon. “After 3 o’clock, we have people who have had respiratory illnesses come in to be seen by (younger) providers less at risk,” he said. Dr. Fenzi said low-income people are vulnerable to COVID19 because they may not have health insurance. He attributed that to the end of the federal mandate or the recent federal “public charge” policy under which getting Medi-Cal may hurt immigrants’ efforts to get a green card. As the pandemic continues, it’s crucial that people keep washing their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, Dr. Fenzi said. “We still need to wash our hands a lot. We still need to keep our hands off our face. We still need the social distance.” Email: dmason@newspress.com

he new social distancing guidelines are helping to keep us safe. The only problem is we need to be social; it’s part of our DNA. Here are some ways to maintain physical distancing and still be a little social. 1. Front yard BBQs. Simple idea: everyone brings their grills into their own front yard. Someone is the designated DJ, and you have a spreadout block party. You get to socialize and share a meal with others in your neighborhood. 2. Backyard concert. My home is somewhat unique in that I am on a lake and all the neighbors can see right into each other’s yards and decks. So I recently set up my music gear in back and gave a concert to the neighbors, geese, and fish. It was fun, and the guy across the lake is giving his concert next weekend. 3. Zoom parties. It’s not just for meetings anymore; people are gathering for social hours, and the reports I’m hearing are pretty positive. Just be careful not to overindulge, which is a good thing to remember throughout this pandemic. 4. If you are dating, video dates are in fashion now. You can FaceTime and watch a movie together and even cook a meal via the Internet. Doing this can actually allow couples to get to know each other better than they would if they were going out or hooking up. There is something very positive to be said for courtship. 5. In some places, even the hiking trails, parks, and beaches have been blocked off, so people are taking walks on the street but being very cautious and stepping away from those who are walking toward them. It’s a little weird, but we still say “Hello,” and we all understand that we are in this together. And it’s still nice to get a smile from a neighbor; it helps us feel less alone in this. 6. If you haven’t gotten into social media, maybe now is the time. My main online hangouts are Facebook and LinkedIn. I post daily, but I also read, make friends, have mini conversations, and check up on people I care about — especially those who I know are alone during this time of physical distancing. It’s easy to do and a great way to keep in touch. 7. Organize something. My desk is clean for the first time in five years, and it was a team effort. It’s actually much easier to get that kind of thing done when there is someone else there to say, “Nah, you don’t need to keep that.” 8. Spring plantings. We talk about the lovely yards in our neighborhood and what plants we want to have in ours. Well, now that we have the time, we are sprouting our own seedlings, and getting clippings from neighbors and planting new flowers all around our property. 9. Talk to someone you haven’t spoken to in over a year. Look in your contacts or address book, and give that person a ring. If no one picks up, leave a message and send a text. Your old friend will get back to you for the same reason you calledóto connect. 10. Organize your finances. Things are very difficult for many people, even for those who still have jobs. Maybe it’s time to estimate your expenses for the year and, like many of us, cancel your vacation travel plans. It’s the safe thing to do, and you may need the money for something more important. In Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, right after basic physiological and safety needs, is the need for love and belonging. If we disconnect from our fellow humans, the loneliness can be very disquieting. Take care of yourself and those you love, and also please reach out to someone who has no one. Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

email addresses. This could open up some new doors for you. LIBRA — Some big upheaval in your career could take you by surprise, Libra, but it’s apt to make a very positive difference to you. Your public standing and income could both skyrocket. Legal papers might be involved in some way. This could happen so suddenly that it has you in a daze, but try to remain focused and go with the flow. You won’t want this opportunity to pass you by. SCORPIO — A social event could bring you into contact with a very intense, fascinating person in an intriguing profession, Scorpio. You could find him or her very charming and sexy. If you aren’t romantically involved at the moment, there could be potential here! If nothing else, this person might steer you in a new intellectual or spiritual direction. You could seem somewhat transformed when you leave the party tonight. SAGITTARIUS — You always tend to have good powers of concentration, Sagittarius, but today you’re more focused than usual, probably on a project that means a lot to you. This could be job related, it might involve helping a friend, or it may just be a personal project. Whatever it is, you should accomplish a lot today. The downside is that you might forget to eat, sleep, or take any breaks. Take care! CAPRICORN — An intense conversation with your romantic partner could take place today, Capricorn. This could involve taking the relationship to the next commitment level, and the subject of marriage could come up. If you’re already married, this could mean taking on a new responsibility, such as a house or child. If you aren’t currently involved, expect to meet someone new and exciting who appeals to you on a number of levels. AQUARIUS — Today you and the other members of your household might discuss the possibility of making some changes, Aquarius. This could involve some redecorating or remodeling or even something as mundane as a thorough cleaning. However, it could also involve the possibility of moving to a completely different place. The need for change in your surroundings is apparent, so don’t hesitate. Go ahead and initiate the first steps! PISCES — Today you might feel the urge to write, Pisces. This could involve nothing more than a lengthy letter or email to a friend, but it could also be creative work, such as a novel, essay, screenplay, or poem. Whatever it is, you’re likely to express some intellectual, philosophical, or spiritual concerns that you hope to shed some light on. Don’t be surprised if you come up with more questions than answers.

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder style. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear in “Play Bridge With Me, my 23rd book, just published. The deals are intermediate level; the focus is on logical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the first heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early trump finesse; I need a quick pitch for my heart loser. East wins the second diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I finesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

of your life is important. I hope the two of you won’t allow your father’s insecurity and apparently controlling nature to interfere. Dear Readers: Medical eye exams can catch early signs of disease before vision is lost. In addition, many diseases — from high blood pressure and diabetes to some cancers — can be diagnosed early through a medical eye exam. For seniors who haven’t had an exam in three or more years, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. Since 1985, EyeCare America has helped almost 2 million people. More than 90 percent of the eye care provided by nearly 6,000 volunteer ophthalmologists is at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient. This service is offered year-round. To find out if you or your loved ones qualify for this program, visit eyecareamerica.org.
