A two-car collision at 128 E. Pedregosa St. broke a fire hydrant that gushed water down the street.

SANTA BARBARA The top of a fire hydrant was sheered off, spewing a large amount of water onto the street and down a storm drain, in a two-vehicle collision Friday morning in the 100 block of East Pedregosa Street, authorities said. The collision occurred around 7: 40 a.m. involving a GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe. One of the vehicles collided with the hydrant and “caused it to expel copious amounts of water”

and prompted to city’s Public Works staff to respond and shut off the hydrant, said Battalion Chief Robert Mercado, spokesman for the Santa Barbara City Fire Department. Water service was restored after a time. Minor injuries were reported in the crash, Battalion Chief Mercado said. Both vehicles sustained minor to moderate damage. The Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the collision. — Mitchell White

Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, also spoke at the event, and said, “We are here today because we refuse to be complicit in the abuse of children and refuse to stand idly by while our American identity is being used to commit human rights abuses.” The representative, a mother of two children, held back tears while speaking to the crowd. After the Rev. Moore and the representative, several others followed to express their opposition against the centers along the border. The last protest in Santa Barbara that addressed the detention facilities took place a year ago according to Michal Lynch of IAC. The last speaker to address the more than 100-strong crowd was bilingual. She taught the protestors the unity clap, which, according to her, represents a resistance movement’s slow but steady beat that builds momentum over time. After explaining the symbolism and history of this clap, the crowd joined her and finished off the gathering. ‘Conviction of the Heart’: Kenny Loggins to perform his song with local teens during Wednesday’s online Earth Day festival By DAVE MASON NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Kenny Loggins is impressed with photos showing a significant change in major cities. Their skies are clean. “This ‘shelter at home’ time has produced dramatic photographs of our major cities without polluted skies!” the Montecito singer told the News-Press, answering questions by email. “Who knew that was even possible? And how quickly it happened!” Mr. Loggins, 72, said he hopes the photos will inspire people to believe a non-polluted environment is possible and could be sustained if they insisted on change from the government. The musician brings his passion for the environment to #TogetherWeEarthrise Earth Day Live Festival. The strictly online version of the annual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival starts at noon Wednesday. (The usual festival was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.) Mr. Loggins, whose hits include the theme of “Footloose” (1984) and “Danger Zone” from “Top Gun” (1986), is among the local musicians performing. He’s doing so in a video from his Montecito home, which includes his band members performing in Los Angeles and Nashville. In addition, Mr. Loggins has recruited local teens, performing at their homes, to join him and his core band members Dave Salinas, Scott Bernard and Rick Cowling on the chorus of “Conviction of the Heart.” The song appeared on his 1991 album “Leap of Faith.” Mr. Loggins quoted the chorus: “One with the earth One with the sky One with everything in life.” Mr. Loggins said he hopes the presence of the teen-agers will emphasize that their generation is inheriting this world. The singer was praised by Kathi King, the Earth Day festival’s director, for his participation in #TogetherWeEarthrise Earth Day Live Festival. “He’s performed a few times in

“It’s community-oriented featuring local musicians and personalities, and we’re still honoring our previous environmental heroes.” Through both live and prerecorded videos, different speakers, performances, interviews and messages will fill the five-hour livestream. On the entertainment front, musicians like Kenny Loggins, Glen Phillips, and Zach Gill are among the CEC’s living room concert lineup. Guest speakers will include former Vice President Al Gore and actor Jeff Bridges, as well as established Earth Day heroes like Florencia Ramirez and Congressman Salud Carbajal. Even poetry performances will make an appearance, with Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Sojourner Kincaid Rolle and San Marcos High School senior slam poet Madai Quevedo lending their talents to the festivities. To moderate the segments, local journalists and KJEE radio station DJs will serve as virtual emcees. Although a jam-packed schedule is not atypical for the festival, the shift to digital has also allowed CEC to include more personalities than previously possible. “(This) does provide an opportunity to involve more speakers than might have been able to travel regardless of the (coronavirus) travel restrictions,” said Ms. Wright. “Around Earth Day, some folks are in high demand, so they have to choose one location to speak at like Washington D.C. or New York. We are now able to hear from more people.” Among the new additions is environmental activist and journalist Bill McKibben, who founded 350. org, the first planet-wide movement. For the first time, Mr. McKibben and other coveted personalities can be in more than one place at once. By removing physical barriers, the CEC’s Earth Day Festival can include and reach more than ever before. The livestream will even be available to those who cannot tune in live, with a rerun of the event playing Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. In between the showings, CEC

“I have said for 30 years now, the environmental movement isn’t really a political issue. It’s a spiritual one,” said Montecito singer Kenny Loggins, who’s among the performers Wednesday at sbearthday.org.

FYI #TogetherWeEarthrise Earth Day Live Festival will begin at noon Wednesday at sbearthday.org. Speakers will vary from Santa Barbara movie star Jeff Bridges to former Vice President Al Gore. There will also be several panel discussions. In addition, the event will feature local musicians Kenny Loggins, Glen Phillips, Zach Gill, Tina Schlieske and Michael McDonald. There will also be poetry performances by Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, the Santa Barbara poet laureate, and Madai Quevedo, a slam poet and a San Marcos High School senior.

the last several years at the festival,” Ms. King told the News-Press. “He’s wonderful. “Pretty much everyone we reached out to said ‘yes’ right away,” Ms. King said about the musicians, poets and speakers. She noted people have time on their hands and want to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the festival, the Community Environmental Council (the event’s organizer) and Earth Day itself. “People are happy to have something to engage in and provide some entertainment and inspiration for people at a time when we need it,” Ms. King said.

invites viewers to take part in a virtual beer garden on Zoom from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., an online gathering the nonprofit has created to support local restaurants. “We’re made arrangements with local restaurants providing Earth Day specials for takeout,” said Ms. Wright. “I’ve been cooking in my kitchen for the past six weeks, so I’m ready for somebody else to make my dinner.” Those like Ms. Wright looking to take the Earth Day celebration a step further can find offers at Buena Onda Empanadas, Lemon & Coriander, and milk & honey tapas to name a few. The full list of participating restaurants can be found at SbEarthDay.org/sbearthday-special. Just call in, pull up a chair and enjoy dinner with your fellow environmental enthusiasts – quarantine-style. If viewers are in search of some more mediated contact, Ms. Wright floated the idea of watching the livestream with one another over Zoom, developing the online ties that much more. By bringing the community together in more ways than one, this year’s Earth Day festival isn’t that different after all. In fact, the event is fulfilling a role it has had since the start. “Earth Day truly has always been about connecting with one another and this will bring that same spirit,” said Ms. Wright. While the celebration finds itself in the sixth week since the statewide stay-at-home order took place, Ms. Wright thinks the 50th anniversary will be a poignant relief from the chaos. “At the moment, when we are supposed to be having our greatest gathering, we’re separated,” she said. “But I keep coming back to the feeling that the actual lesson or take away is that we’re not isolated. We’re extremely connected with one another. “The thing that’s really uplifting is how dependent on each other we are for our health. It’s moving to see how quickly folks organized around protecting each other and protecting public health.” Going forward, Ms. Wright hopes that willingness can be applied to other crises, namely the conservation movement. And with

Mr. Loggins discussed the power of music to help people during the pandemic and other difficult times. “Music can be used to calm, distract, nurture, motivate, uplift and heal our hearts,” he said, but added, “It will not be much help if we run out of air or water.” Mr. Loggins said people have been lulled into accepting a polluted world as a normal, natural byproduct of economic progress, “which of course is the opposite of the truth.” He noted people also believe the “lie that there’s just ‘not enough to go around.’ ” “I have said for 30 years now, the environmental movement isn’t really a political issue. It’s a spiritual one,” Mr. Loggins said, stressing the connection with the earth. “What we do to Her, we do to ourselves.” Mr. Loggins said his generation may be a lost cause in the environmental movement. “We almost had the vision of something bigger than daily survival in the ’60s, but we lost it,” he said. “Our present leadership reflects that lack of consciousness.” Mr. Loggins said he would like the next generation to produce leaders who are less mired in the selfishness and greed of previous generations. The singer called for tomorrow’s leaders to value cooperation and demonstrate “the imagination to recreate their world.”

I have become more liberal than my wife over the years, and I recently attended a service at a liberal, internationally recognized church. I felt I belonged immediately. I had never before felt so happy to be with like-minded worshippers. My wife had huge issues with it, and the next time I wanted to attend, she got very upset. I resent my wife’s resistance. everything at a standstill, she thinks the pandemic could offer somewhat of an environmental reset. “Everything that we are experiencing is coming at a horrible cost,” she said. “Not anyone is happy about it, but it’s what we’re doing so we may as well take some lessons and see what we have been doing.” Not having to drive to work or travel across the country have caused an unprecedented drop in emissions. Levels of nitrogen dioxide in China, for example, were down as much as 30% at the beginning of March, according to NASA. So as the public health crisis pushes the world to adapt, Ms. Wright thinks important lessons could be learned in the meantime. “Once we’re more familiar with technologies like Zoom, they’ll become life hacks,” she said. “Some of the things that we’ve been playing with could lead to businesses and employees working from home once or twice a month or week. That would have a real, noticeable impact on emissions and on climate change if we were to take that step. “(We’ve) learned you don’t need to get in an airplane for absolutely everything. You can go to conferences and learn things from home. We may choose to do that for health reasons when the stayat-home measures are lifted… that could have a strong impact on the climate.” The environment is just one of the many issues COVID-19 has swept aside as it continues to overtake daily life. For now, Ms. Wright agrees that focus should remain on the disease, but that doesn’t mean other problems need to fall by the wayside. This means Wednesday’s festival isn’t just a reason to come together and commemorate a half-century’s worth of work – it’s a reminder that when the pandemic is over, other problems will remain. “It was inconceivable to go dark this week, it’s too important,” said Ms. Wright. “Issues like the environment don’t take a hiatus. We absolutely need to stay centered and focused on keeping conservation at the top of people’s minds.” email: tkenny@newspress.com

SAGITTARIUS — Financial good fortune continues, Sagittarius, although old habits are hard to break and you might have difficulty adjusting to it. You could alternate between wanting to buy out the store and continuing to pinch pennies the way you used to. That’s OK. Everybody has to make adjustments in life. Second only to falling in love, this will probably be one of the most pleasant adjustments you’ll ever have to make! CAPRICORN — Are you going on a trip or possibly moving, Capricorn? Is education involved in some way? Whatever your reasons for going away, you’re going to gain whatever you hope for - and more. Writing, teaching, and anything involving communication should go very well right now, including conversations with a romantic partner. Your mind is quick and retentive right now, so make the most of it. AQUARIUS — You tend to be intuitive by nature, Aquarius, but today you could receive psychic impressions by the dozen. You might even experience visions or hear voices. Don’t worry – you aren’t going crazy! You do, however, need to pay attention to these messages. They may have immense personal or even planetary significance. If you can’t make sense of them, write them down. It should all be clear to you later. PISCES — Communication with friends and partners should be clear, open, honest, and supportive today, Pisces. Camaraderie flows freely, and affection is shown without restraint or overkill. If you’re presently involved but not yet committed, a declaration of love and an expression of desire to move the relationship to the next level could be in the wind. At the very least, your lover should pay you a compliment or two!

Since 1981 I’ve written a monthly column for the ACBL’s magazine. Many have been “over-my-shoulder” tyle. You listen in on my thoughts during a deal. Ninety of the best of these appear n “Play Bridge With Me,” my 23rd book, just published. The deals are ntermediate level; the focus is on ogical thinking. At today’s four spades, I win the irst heart in dummy and lead a diamond. I can’t risk losing an early rump finesse; I need a quick pitch or my heart loser. East wins the econd diamond and returns a heart, and I win to discard dummy’s last heart on my high diamond. When I inesse in trumps, East wins and exits with a trump.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES — Have you been reading about how a positive mental outlook creates a healthy body and a happy life, Aries? If so, you might just find that this attitude brings results. You’re feeling strong, fit, and mentally sharp. Career interests seem to be looking up for you. A fringe benefit is that you’re probably feeling especially intuitive, too. Keep doing whatever you’ve been doing to bring this all about, because it’s working! TAURUS — Research that you’ve been doing for a particular project may finally be completed, Taurus. Now you’re ready to finish your work. Your mind is especially sharp right now, so this is a good time to work on any kind of project that involves communication. If you’re a writer, your publishing prospects look good. Romance also should be going well. Perhaps you just became aware of a strong psychic bond between you and your beloved. Make the most of it! GEMINI — Dreams and visions about your family paint a rosy picture of your future, Gemini. These dreams could well be prophetic, but don’t jump to that conclusion without first analyzing the symbols and discerning what your dreams are trying to tell you. There could be something that you need to consider before you can move ahead toward the future you want to create. But remember that dreams can be interpreted in more than one way! CANCER — Tonight you might decide to attend a social gathering held in your community that involves a lot of people who are into psychic or spiritual matters, Cancer. This should be an interesting experience for you, because you could not only glean a lot of fascinating information but also make some new friends. Someone could recommend a few intriguing books. Keep your eyes and ears open, and take your address book with you. Have fun! LEO — If you’ve been uncertain about the possibility of a raise in your salary, Leo, today you could finally be told for certain that it’s coming. This is definitely cause for celebration. You might want to call a friend or romantic partner and propose a night on the town. Your good luck shows signs of continuing if you keep on working as hard as you have been. Now it’s time to enjoy it! VIRGO — Love and romance take top priority with you today, Virgo. You might be feeling a little insecure about the stability of your current relationship, but you’re wasting your energy. For now, at least, things look very promising for you and your current lover. You should be communicating well and getting along great. Use your intuition to tune in to your friend’s Monday, November 16, 2015 mind, and you’ll probably feel your
