Foot traffic moved slowly south of Stearns Wharf Sunday, as shoppers browsed the weekly Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show along Cabrillo Boulevard. Shoppers lined up around popular booths, and the block between the wharf and the Cabrillo parking lot was congested. When the show reopened post-pandemic, some vendors decided to wait before joining. It was easy to walk from end to end of the market. Now, artists have returned, covering a longer distance of the beachside street. “Santa Barbara must have quite an arts scene,” one tourist said to another. The other visitor agreed. The show has many painters with diverse styles, but the ocean tends to appear in many of the artists’ creations. Jake Reimer, or “Chef Jake,” channels the waves and the creatures that reside beneath in vibrant acrylic paintings. Sunday was his third showing at the market, and he has already sold and commissioned many paintings in under a month. Mr. Reimer is a private chef who recently began painting with his cooking utensils. He wasn’t filling his calendar with catering gigs during lockdowns, so he used his rolling pin for paint instead. La Fiesta Pequeña means “Little Fiesta,” but it’s actually a big show for Old Spanish Days. And a big moment for the community. It’s been two years since Santa Barbara has seen La Fiesta Pequeña, but it will be back Wednesday with music, dance and colorful costumes at the Santa Barbara Mission. It’s hard to imagine a better way to kick off Fiesta, which will continue through Sunday in Santa Barbara and will feature in-person events that didn’t take place last year because of the pandemic. This year’s Fiesta will be closer to the ones that the community remembers, although there won’t be any parades and, because of an increase in COVID-19 cases, no mercados. But the shows are back at the mission and the Santa Barbara County Courthouse’s Sunken Gardens. And DIGS! (Celebración de los Dignatarios) is back at the Santa Barbara Zoo, as well as the Fiesta Stock Horse Show at Earl Warren Showgrounds. Already, pre-Fiesta events have taken place in the wake of the state’s reopening. On Sunday night, La Recepción del Presidente took place at the Carriage and Western Art Museum. Here’s the schedule for Fiesta.

Schaueffele, Dressel win gold medals at Olympics By DAVE MASON NEWS-PRESS MANAGING EDITOR
Despite some serious competition, Xander Schauffele won the gold medal in golf Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics. It was the Team USA golfer’s first major victory, and he defeated experienced golfers with impressive credentials. Apparently nothing, not even Sunday’s new world record set by Rory Sabbatini of Slovakia, could deny Schauffele the gold. In the end, Sabbatini had to settle for bragging rights and a silver medal. Schaeuffele, meanwhile, was all smiles after he played the final four-foot putt that made him a champion during the competition in
Kawagoe, Japan. His father, Stefan Schauffele, shed tears of joy as he watched the medal ceremony. Gold medals bring a lot of joy. Just ask Caeleb Dressel, who now has five of them. The Team USA swimmer won two more golds Sunday. One was for the 50-meter freestyle, and the other one came when Dressel helped the men’s 4X100-meter medley relay team win the race and achieve a new world record. Sometimes athletes get gold medals and bragging rights to boot. In other Olympics competition, U.S. gymnasts MyKayla Skinner and Suni Lee won the silver and bronze medals respectively. Skinner took Simone Biles’ place on the vault,
and Lee competed on the uneven bars. Biles decided against competing in the floor exercise final, which leaves the balance beam final as her last chance to compete at this year’s Olympics. In track and field, the gold medal in the 100meter dash went to Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs. Team USA’s Fred Kerley won the silver. To catch today’s Olympics, watch NBC and its sister networks or its free streaming service, peacock.com. To see Team USA’s medals count, check out the graphic on top of today’s front page.

SANTA BARBARA — Santa Barbara Police officers arrested a juvenile Saturday for a shooting that occurred around 2 p.m. Friday in the area of Anacapa and East Cota Streets. Detectives learned a suspect fired a gun at victims before fleeing and gathered enough evidence to obtain a search and arrest warrant Saturday. Officers, detectives, SWAT team members and the Crisis Negotiations Response Team served the warrant around 9 p.m. Saturday at the suspect’s residence in the 400 block of North Milpas Street. The suspect initially disobeyed law enforcement’s commands amplified by a loudspeaker but eventually exited the residence and was arrested without further resistance. Traffic was diverted for around two hours while police served the warrant. The suspect is a 14-year-old Santa Barbara resident. Because the suspect is a juvenile, the name will not be released. The juvenile is booked at Santa Barbara County Juvenile Hall with the following charges: attempted murder (felony), participation in a criminal street gang (felony) and discharging a firearm in commission of a felony (felony). Investigation is ongoing in portions of the incident.

In the past, she didn’t see many locals browsing the market. Now, she sees repeat customers. Two women bought mugs from Ms. Bergey, walking quickly to her booth as if on a mission for her handmade pottery. “She has the best prices,” one said. “I love it,” said the other. Ms. Mentry also has regular customers, just after two months of selling at the show. She likes chatting with customers but also loves the

been selling at the show for years. Lucinda Bergey, a potter, started selling her work at the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show in 1979. She’s taken breaks of a few years before signing up again. She rejoined the show in April after the pandemic and was disappointed that the market’s reemergence wasn’t an instant success. “That was really sparse when I returned in April, and I’m glad I’m back. It’s enjoyable,” she said. She loves meeting new people, relaxing outdoors and using her sales to buy more clay (although materials have been harder to find over the past year and a half). Since the pandemic, she

His unconventional approach leads to smooth, vibrant paintings inspired by the Channel Islands. Tristin Mentry is another new artist to the show. Her business is named Isoldes Jewelry after the opera and romantic legend “Tristan and Isolde.” She crafts polymer-clay earrings with mod shapes and nature-inspired patterns she displays on her Instagram, @ isoldesjewelry. “I got into it during COVID just because I needed something to pass the time and saw a new hobby I wanted to try out. And then it just kind of exploded from there,” she told the News-Press. She has set up shop for eight weeks at the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show and is enjoying the experience. At first, she sold earrings to her family and friends before signing up for the show. Mr. Reimer took a similar path. He has lived locally for 20 years and always enjoyed the market, so he signed up to expand his art’s reach. “The veteran artists here are not only lovely, but super talented. And they’ve not only welcomed me with open arms, but they’ve given me tips,” he said. “They really wanted the new artist to succeed.” Ms. Mentry’s favorite part of her Sundays on Cabrillo is meeting other artists and makers. “Everyone I’ve met here is so welcoming and supportive. Everyone’s so down to help each other out and give tips on their own business,” she said. Some of Sunday’s artists have

calmness behind the scenes when she is creating the earrings. “It gave me an outlet, and it puts you in a focused, flowing state,” she said. “I like playing with clay, designing new shapes.” Mr. Reimer also mentioned the meditative qualities of creativity. “It’s not only been a good thing. In many ways, it’s helped me find a creative soul and helped me really kind of rethink about not only what’s possible when it comes to a vision, but also an endless spectrum of creativity — which is also helping in the food world as well,” he said. He sees similarities in his role as a chef and an artist, and he is growing in both fields. He shares both his culinary and acrylic masterpieces on Instagram, @ chefjakereimer. “When you have somebody taste a dish for the first time or they see a dish for the first time, you see that reaction,” he said. “And that’s like the ultimate of satisfaction, like my creativity is being noticed. “It’s the same here when people go by and they’re like, ‘Oh, wow, look at those colors. Look at those textures.’” Drawing from his experience as a chef, he paints marine life, like shrimp. All the artists up and down Cabrillo have their own flavor as well. Shoppers can buy chocolate, abstract art, visors for dogs, ornaments and more. Perhaps the variety is what brought pedestrians away from the wharf and down the sidewalk Sunday, weaving through other passersby to get to booths that catch their eye.

Company offers healthy snacks in compostable containers By MARILYN MCMAHON

NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
hen Kate and Bryan Flynn were contemplating a name for their new business venture — organic, vegan, gluten-free snacks — they wanted something that would reflect where they live — Santa Barbara. And they envisioned a broad portfolio of foods. Sun & Swell worked for them. Launched in 2016, the business now offers more than 100 products that include California Medjool dates, mango slices, rolled oats, raw cashew pieces, walnuts, hemp hearts, trail mixes and coconut shreds. The products are sold at the business’ store in Ventura. “Our first product was Date and Cashew Energy Bites, and they are still among our best sellers,” said Mrs. Flynn, who grew up in Ohio and North Carolina and came to UCSB to earn her bachelor’s in economics in 2007 and her master’s in business administration at Harvard University in 2012. After working as a certified public accountant in Orange County, she moved to San Francisco to become a growth strategy consultant in the retail and food industry. “I was working long hours and needed healthy snacks, which were hard to find. I was looking

for something made with real food found in pantries. When I checked the ingredients on most of the snacks, what I found was sugar and preservatives,” Mrs. Flynn told the News-Press. Sun & Swell Foods are sold in 16-ounce packages that range in price from $5 to $15 depending on the ingredients, and twoounce grab-and-go containers sell for about $3. “We use only real foods that are sourced from farms in the area. For example, our dates are from Coachella Valley, and our trail mix has pistachios from Santa Barbara Pistachio Co.,” Mrs. Flynn said. New products to be launched in the fall include fig-filled Date and Cashew Bites, dried soups and baking mixes. They are available online, at the store in Ventura and locally at Whole Foods and Tri-County Produce Co. and Lighthouse Coffee. In 2018, the couple put compostable snack food packaging on the market for the first time. “Our packages look like plastic, but they are made from wood pulp, which turns back into the soil that can be reused on farms within months of entering the waste system,” said Mrs. Flynn. “As our company grew, we were having increasing concerns over our use of single-use plastic packages that ended up in our oceans and landfills.
“We’re willing to put forth extreme effort to make these changes because it’s about more than just food to us. This is about a massive problem that needs fixing. This is about fixing a broken system that’s gone unbroken for far too long. It can no longer be acceptable to ignore the last stage of a product’s life and continue to fill our planet with trash that will outlive several generations of humans to come. We know we are just one small family company, but we have to start somewhere.” While getting their fledgling business off the ground, the couple also faced the challenge of becoming first-time parents when Leila was born in June 2020. “I thought it would be a problem to manage Sun & Swell and be a new mom, but it has made me a better business owner. I prioritize better, and I’ve learned to delegate,” said Mrs. Flynn who also offers tips for those thinking about starting their own businesses. “My biggest advice is to recognize that at a certain point, if your goal is to grow your business, you have to look for leverage wherever possible. I’ve had to become comfortable with handing off more and more things to my amazing team. This was difficult for me because for the first couple years, I had Please see SUN & SWELL on B2

And used for signaling and celebration. Very different from 19th century chamber pots, which in no way were used for celebration, although my son used one of my collectible chamber pots for his popcorn at movie night. And he found three of them in flea markets in Ventura. Here’s the story behind the seafaring Thunder Mugs. A sea captain would fire one of these very very small cannons, the size of a beer mug, lit with black powder, in the direction of port to sound that the ship was coming in. And if a captain saw another ship at sea, in the olden days, and didn’t recognize her, he would send off a mighty blast, and the other ship would answer. And this was done without displaying the large and
threatening cannons on the sides of the ships. And it was not seen as threatening to anyone on the sea, although the poor first mate who held these little powerful weapons and lit them and sounded them off was in mortal danger of losing sight and hearing. So these are not for bathroom use. No, they were for signaling for four centuries. In England in the 16th century, they were used for the conclusion of a fireworks display, and whoever used them had to be extremely careful as they might lose ears and eyes, not to mention hands. Aries
Libra
When the full moon aligns with Uranus in your social sector, you could face an argument with friends, Aries. Just wait for things to cool down. Mercury enters Leo for two weeks starting on Monday, so prepare for fun romances and the potential to connect.
Oh, Libra. We know you love your routine. But with Uranus in the mix, that routine is bound to be tossed out the window. As Venus moves into Cancer, you’ll put that equalityloving attitude to good use and find compromise.
Taurus
The full moon is shining in your family zone, Scorpio. Perhaps it’s time to balance your work life and family life. Mercury opposes Saturn too here, so it’s best to listen to the other person’s side before moving forward.
Gemini Your communication is going to get a face-lift as Mercury moves into Leo this week, Gemini. The next two weeks are the best time for you to promote yourself, your ideas, and catch up with friends.
Cancer With the full moon in your finance sector, don’t be impulsive with your wallet, Cancer. Now is the time to think before you go ahead and spend. Mercury opposes Saturn this week as well, which could make you a bit moody.
Leo The full moon is linking up with Uranus. It’s not a good time to make spontaneous moves or comments, Leo. Wait until things are settled.
Virgo Mars moves into your sign this week, bringing a lot of energy for creating dreams and getting frisky. Mercury is moving into your spiritual sector—so, Virgo, share in deeper conversations.
Scorpio
Sagittarius As a Sagittarius, you enjoy anything new. With the full moon highlighting your local zone, try finding “new” things around the house. Try a new restaurant in town, walk down a path you’ve never tried.
Capricorn You deserve to treat yourself, Capricorn. And that’s exactly what the full moon in your money zone is telling you. Go ahead and buy yourself something nice. Venus is moving into your relationship zone… which means spicy things are on their way.

Every number in the codeword grid is ‘code’ for a letter of the alphabet. Thus, the number 2 may correspond to the letter L, for instance. All puzzles come with a few letters to start. Your first move should be to enter these letters in the puzzle grid. If the letter S is in the box at the bottom of the page underneath the number 2, your first move should be to find all cells numbered 2 in the grid and enter the letter S. Cross the letter S off the list at the bottom of the grid. Remember that at the end you should have a different letter of the alphabet in each of the numbered boxes 1- 26, and a word in English in each of the horizontal and vertical runs on the codeword grid.

The undersigned or its predecessor caused said Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 018659-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: Effective January 1, 2021, you may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (855) 313-3319, or visit this internet website www.clearreconcorp.com, using the file number assigned to this case 018659-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. NOTICE OF APPLICATION AND PENDING ACTION BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TO: (1) WAIVE THE PUBLIC HEARING ON A COASTAL DEVELOPMENT PERMIT THAT MAY BE APPEALED TO THE CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION AND (2) APPROVE, CONDITIONALLY APPROVE, OR DENY THE COASTAL DEVELOPMENT PERMIT This may affect your property. Please read. Notice is hereby given that an application for the project described below has been submitted to the Santa Barbara County Planning and Development Department. This project requires the approval and issuance of a Coastal Development Permit by the Planning and Development Department. The development requested by this application is subject to appeal to the California Coastal Commission following final action by Santa Barbara County and therefore a public hearing on the application is normally required prior to any action to approve, conditionally approve or deny the application. However, in compliance with California Coastal Act Section 30624.9, the Director has determined that this project qualifies as minor development and therefore intends to waive the public hearing requirement unless a written request for such hearing is submitted by an interested party to the Planning and Development Department within the 15 working days following the Date of Notice listed below. All requests for a hearing must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Request for Hearing Expiration Date listed below, to Willow Brown at Planning and Development, 123 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara 93101-2058, by email at wbrown@co.santa-barbara.ca.us, or by fax at (805) 568-2030. If a public hearing is requested, notice of such a hearing will be provided. WARNING: Failure by a person to request a public hearing may result in the loss of the person’s ability to appeal any action taken by Santa Barbara County on this Coastal Development Permit to the County Planning Commission or Board of Supervisors and ultimately the California Coastal Commission. If a request for public hearing is not received by 5:00 p.m. on the Request for Hearing Expiration Date listed below, then the Planning and Development Department will act to approve, approve with conditions, or deny the request for a Coastal Development Permit. At this time it is not known when this action may occur; however, this may be the only notice you receive for this project. To receive additional information regarding this project, including the date the Coastal Development Permit is approved, and/or to view the application and plans, or to provide comments on the project, please contact Willow Brown at Planning and Development, 123 E.
