possibility of getting back to in-person dinner meetings again. We would be able to follow the meeting guidelines established by the vendors and the participating restaurants as a way to “test the waters“ while getting back to normal! It might be as early as mid July to August when we could participate in one of these meetings.

Several exciting things are happening on the legislative front, including potential federal provider status which you can read about in Rosalin’s legislation updates. (continued on next page) 1

I’m looking forward to events that our social affairs committee are planning including a “virtual escape room”, which will have taken place by the time the newsletter is published. Thank you to our education committee for planning and organizing the Residency Project CE Presentations that occurred in May. Finally, I want to again emphasize our push to maintain and to increase membership of our chapter. Additional tools to attract and retain members are in the process of being developed by CSHP. We will be discussing them in our upcoming meetings. Thank you all for your dedication to CSHP and to our South Bay Long Beach chapter.

Stretch and Relax Yoga with SBLBSHP

On March 18, 2021, the social affairs committee hosted its first ever virtual event, Stretch and Relax Yoga with SBLBSHP, which was open to all interested SBLBSHP members. The social affairs committee and members bonded virtually by doing yoga together following a guided online beginners yoga class streamed from the Peloton platform. It was a nice way to unwind and relax after a long day at work while socializing with our members. As the pandemic situation evolves in the coming months, the social affairs committee will continue to look for creative opportunities to engage with our valued members. Please be on the lookout for events to come!

Legislation Updates AB1328 Passes the Assembly B&P, Moves to Appropriations!

In the Summer of 2020, CSHP formed a Public Health Task Force to work on AB1328, authored by Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin. The goal was to empower pharmacists to fully engage in public health initiatives. On April 20, 2021, AB1328 passed the first hearing at the Assembly Business and Professions (B&P) Committee and passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee on May 5th, 2021. If it follows its course, it will then move to the Assembly Floor, then move the same course on the Senate side, then to the governor’s desk for signing into law. (Legislation Updates Continued) What is the current law?

Current law limits pharmacist scope of practice allowing only a few CLIA Waived tests to be performed. There are limitations to respond to public-health emergencies, provide basic publichealth care services and patient-specific care for which pharmacists are trained and educated.

In order for pharmacist to provide testing and vaccination during COVID-19 pandemic, executive orders, waivers, and the passage of legislation were required.

Why AB1328?

AB 1328 minimizes barriers and restrictions in existing law by permitting pharmacists to administer CLIA-waived tests, perform health screenings and manage those conditions in concert with, and as a part of, a multi-disciplinary health care team.

Continuing Education Recap: PrEParing for SB 159

This past month, the educational affairs committee was hard at work to claim yet another successful virtual CE under our belts on 4/21/21! We were honored to host Dr. Jerika Lam, PharmD, AAHIVP, FCSHP as a presenter for her presentation “PrEParing for SB159”. Punny title aside, the CE focused on a comprehensive review of the new senate bill legislation, its implication for pharmacist scope-of-practice, and a refresher course on HIV antiretrovirals, PEP, and PrEP. Dr. Lam, who is an associate professor at the Chapman University School of Pharmacy and also a clinical pharmacist at the Infectious Diseases Clinic with the AltaMed Medical Group, created an interactive and educational presentation for an exciting and relevant topic in pharmacy.

(CE Recap continued) We also continued to collaborate with our pharmaceutical industry partners with the help of the Industrial Relations committee. Representatives from Gilead and Incyte provided us with in-depth information on Veklury (remdesivir) as well as an overview of Jakafi (ruxolitinib) and its available patient support program IncyteCARES. This time around, we had an attendance of over 20 members! Be sure to stay tuned for updates on future CE events, where we may be offering raffle opportunities for member attendees to win gift cards!

Social/Mentorship Event Recap: Career Panel

On 4/15/2021 SBLBSHP hosted a Career Panel featuring SBLBSHP members from a variety of practice settings. Twelve students from various pharmacy schools attended this event. During this event, students had the opportunity to have one on one interaction with each pharmacist, ask specific questions regarding the pharmacist’s career path, and receive focused advice on pursuing that specific path.

Dr. Lauren Alfano shared her perspective on inpatient pharmacy working as a clinical pharmacist in a cardiac step-down unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Tim Chou shared his managerial perspective and discussed his journey in becoming the outpatient pharmacy manager at the Coastline pharmacy at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. Dr. Pin Xiang offered strategies on selecting between fellowship and residency and provided advice on pursuing a career with a focus in research. Lastly, Dr. Michelle Ding provided insights on both psychiatric pharmacy and her new journey as a medical science liaison. This event was well received and the students were able to further understand the various pharmacist career pathways.

Technicians' Corner

The COVID-19 pandemic created drug shortages, staffing challenges, and the loss of familiar comforts. Yet, our determined pharmacists and pharmacy technicians rose to the occasion by working harder and smarter. They found creative ways to circumvent worsening drug shortages, shared knowledge across disciplines, and collaborated to find innovative solutions to complex problems. Everyone took on added responsibilities and duties to help with the pandemic.

When the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the authorization of the Pharmacy Technicians Immunization Administration late in 2020, many technicians were enthused to take a more active role in fighting the pandemic. At my facility, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, we have 6 certified technician immunizers and 4 more studying to soon be certified. The certification process involves finding a “Healthcare buddy”, a pharmacist who is willing to sacrifice their arm and receive a practice injection to demonstrate the technician’s competency. This process brought our participating pharmacists and technicians closer together, bridging the gap between the two groups and creating opportunities for exchanging best practices and sharing stories (sometimes horror stories) about giving immunization. Our technicians felt supported and uplifted while pharmacists were happy to help guide technicians, giving all parties a sense of camaraderie and well-being. A buzz of good will and fortitude was instilled in our pharmacy as an unforeseen consequence of the Pharmacy Technician Immunization Administration.

Now that they are nearing the end of their residency and are about to embark on the next chapter of their career, we are confident that they will be successful in all their endeavors.

In appreciation of the continued support SBLBSHP have been receiving from our members throughout the years, we held raffles at the end of both WSC events. The excitement of watching the raffle wheel spinning was the perfect ending to this year SBLBSHP WSC events. Congratulations to all the raffle prize winners! With COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, please look out for updates on future CE events where we may return to having in person event again!

UC San Francisco Chapter Updates

2020-2021 CSHP-UCSF Board In April, we hosted a Residency 101 event via Zoom, where Dr. Morris, the UCSF Residency Director, provided students with many valuable tips and information about residency programs and the application process. There was a great turn out with over 50 students who attended virtually! From asking for letters of recommendation to preparing a CV, the students had all their questions answered at this insightful event.

The annual Residency Match Panel took place in May via zoom, where five matched students from the Class of 2021 shared their perspectives and pearls of applying and interviewing for residencies. Panelists shared helpful tips on how to be a well-rounded applicant, research/choose programs and successfully apply for residency! In addition, students received the panelists’ contact info as well as example CVs graciously provided by the panelists.
