Peterson Automotive Museum. This event was well attended able to see cars ranging from old classics to modern cars and even the 1989 Batmobile from Batman Returns! Being a car guy myself, I personally enjoyed this event a lot and also enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with our members and their families.

In September, we participated/sponsored the Bread of Life Health Fair in Torrance to help provide diabetes, hypertension and hyperlidipemia screenings for the community. Furthermore, we also had our Leadership Breakfast event which was attended by many pharmacy managers and directors to listen to Darryl Rich, PharmD, MBA, FASHP talk about “Sterile Compounding Standards and Regulation Update.” Lastly, our chapter delegates have also been busy with reviewing policy proposals that will be discussed at the House of Delegates (HOD) meeting at CSHP Seminar.

In addition to holding our own events, we have also provided sponsorships for other activities. In the past couple months, we provided sponsorships for the New Practitioner Executive Committee (NPEC), USC Legislative Day, CSHP Seminar award ceremony and coffee carts. We also provided donation to the UCSF Student Scholarship in memory of Peter Ambrose who has contributed so much to CSHP and the pharmacy profession.

October is American Pharmacist Month! This year, we celebrate pharmacy week on October 16-22, 2016. Pharmacy week acknowledges the invaluable contributions that pharmacists and technicians make to patient care in hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, and other healthcare settings. Make sure to take this time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements and accomplishments and share those accomplishments with your patients and other health professionals that you work collaboratively with.

October is also time for CSHP Seminar at Disneyland Hotel & Resort! There’s definitely going to be a lot of learning and networking at Seminar so be sure to attend! Thank you for your continued support for our chapter and I look forward to seeing you at Seminar!

Summer Family Event at the Petersen Automotive Museum

We had more than 40 people including members, family and friends join us for brunch and a day at the Petersen Automotive Museum. The day started with an awesome brunch buffet at Maggiano’s at the Grove. There was plenty of time for all to network and enjoy the food. Following brunch we enjoyed an afternoon at the automotive museum.

In 2015, the museum underwent an extensive $90 million renovation. It is an architectural marvel. The façade was designed by the architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox. The vehicles inside were amazing. There were many exotics including cars from famous movies, James Bond, Batman, etc.

Many of us added on the special Vault Tour where we were able to see even more cars including a Pope Mobile!

An added bonus was Chip Foose of Overhaulin’, Velocity Channel. Chip was there to meet, greet and sign autographs. Several from our group were able to get selfies!

It was a special treat for the car enthusiasts! This is the first time we have put on a summer event outside our South Bay or Long Beach areas. Thanks for all of you that came out for the event!

Long Beach Rescue Mission Outreach

By Sco' Harada, Public Rela4ons Chair The first of several Long Beach Rescue Mission (LBRM) Health Fairs was Sunday, October 9, 2016 where USC student pharmacists provided hypertension screenings to our local homeless shelter. SBLBSHP has provided health classes to the organization for months now, which have all been well received. So well, that members of the program requested various screening services. This hypertension screening was one of a line of many we plan to provide for our local community. The LBRM's goal is to empower their members to become sustainable, thus educating participants about risks for hypertension and ways to prevent is just one key component SBLBSHP and our USC student pharmacists hope to provide on their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

We held another SBLBSHP Healthy Heart Friday class for the Long Beach Rescue Mission on October 7, 2016, which revolved around smoking cessation. LBRM estimates that about 70% of their members are either current or past smokers, therefore it is no surprise that members of LBRM requested a talk on what it takes to break the habit. Student pharmacists from USC School of Pharmacy educated on the dangers, risks, benefits, and various strategies to empower the community to quit smoking.

PRECEPTORS NEEDED!

SBLBSHP will be looking for pharmacist volunteers on December 2, 2016 from 10-11AM to precept USC student pharmacists presenting on DIET at the Long Beach Rescue Mission.

Everything is tied to diet, and for this community, this may be one of the most beneficial topics covered in our series. If you or someone you know would be interested in precepting for this event, please do not hesitate to contact me at haradarx@gmail.com at your earliest convince. All of the program members have been open minded and ready for change.

Let's show our community that proper health is far more than medications.

Bread of Life Church Health Fair By: Julie La, Social Affairs Chair On September 10, 2016, SBLBSHP had the pleasure of participating in the Bread of Life Church Health Fair in Torrance alongside 29 USC School of Pharmacy student pharmacists and 25 local vendors.

A total of 62 patients were screened for hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes by USC School of Pharmacy student pharmacists. SBLBSHP pharmacists Lisa Lum, Tim Chou, Matt Kamada, and Julie La helped to precept and provide patient education, and pharmacy technician Yasmin Yap-Mariano helped to promote our SBLBSHP chapter and healthy lifestyle habits.

The health fair garnered positive feedback from both participants and patients alike, with many patients expressing gratitude for the multitude of services provided to them free of charge. Overall, this event was highly successful and it was a great opportunity for SBLBSHP members to give back to their local community!

Leadership Breakfast

South Bay Long Beach Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists held another successful Leadership Breakfast on September 16, 2016. The event was held in Long Beach at The Boathouse on the Bay. Guests were able to speak with a variety of pharmaceutical industry vendors and enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet upon arriving. Thereafter, Darryl Rich, PharmD, MBA, FASHP, who is currently a Medication Safety Specialist with Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) provided the attendees with an update on sterile compounding standards and regulations. Everyone who attended enjoyed a great talk, great food, and great view, all while earning 1 continuing education credit!

Educational Dinners

By Angela Jeong, Educational Affairs and Industry Relations Chair We had a busy summer for educational dinners. We gathered at Il Fornaio to listen to Updates in CLL/SLL Therapy by Jacqueline H Rolfe, PhD, MS. The sizable turnout created a “cozy" environment for everyone.

On July 20, 2016, we enjoyed a talk on Overall Survival in Two Tumor Types at The Depot by John Link, MD We had a very interactive question and answer session with the speaker.

Greg Fonarrow, MD gave a talk on October 4, 2016 regarding congestive heart failure at the 555 Steakhouse in Long Beach. His presentation was informative and engaging.

Advocacy in Action

By Steven Thompson, Director I had the privilege of representing CSHP at an event with Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, CSHP Legislative consultant Mark Weideman, and others. We spent the day traveling to various locations in the Del Mar area and getting to know one another. Following the day’s events, we sat down to hors d'oeuvres and a 5-course dinner. It was a very relaxed event and allowed a lot of time to socialize and build relationships. Speaker Rendon represents the 63rd Assembly District in the California State Assembly. The 63rd Assembly District includes nine cities – Bell, Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, South Gate and a northern portion of Long Beach.

Speaker Rendon will be the only speaker since San Francisco Democrat Willie Brown won’t have to worry about being bounced by term limits anytime soon. Because California voters softened legislative term limits in 2012, lawmakers can serve 12 years in one house. Rendon won’t be termed out until 2024. It is possible he could be speaker longer than anyone except Brown. This longevity means having time to learn legislating skills, acquire policy expertise and accumulate the political power needed to get things done in Sacramento. It also provides more time to plan for the state’s future and a reason for doing it. As a representative of CSHP, I look forward for the opportunity to continue this relationship with Speaker Rendon and his staff.

Regional Delegate Conference

By Steven Thompson, Director The Regional Delegate Conference was held on September 17, 2016. South Bay / Long Beach belonged to Region 5 along with Chapman University, Ketchum University, Orange County, San Diego, and UCSD. We met at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo since it was half way between San Diego and Los Angeles. Mission Hospital has hosted this event for the past several years and had a great facility for us that included a conference room with a large video screen. They have been a great host, and we want to thank them for their hospitality. Our conference was chaired by President Kethen So and Board Liaisons Rich Levy and Alex Cullum.

Representing SBLBSHP was Judith Nakao, Kevin Kaneko, Matt Kamada, and Steven Thompson. We had a very productive day reviewing all of the proposals in preparation for the House of Delegates which will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Seminar in Anaheim.

Taking the Next Step : Reimbursable Pharmacist Services under Medi-Cal

Talamantes Eggman reconciled a gap in state law by allowing the state Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to establish reimbursement mechanisms for pharmacist services.

With the passage of SB 493 in 2013, pharmacists gained official recognition in state law as healthcare providers.

Furthermore, the bill allowed California pharmacists to provide an expanded scope of services. Regulations stemming from SB 493 were finalized in 2016 and allowed California pharmacists to provide hormonal contraceptives, naloxone, and nicotine replacement products for smoking cessation directly to patients. However, despite recently enacted regulations, Medi-Cal does not have the authority to allow pharmacists to provide clinical services to patients. According to federal law pharmacists are not recognized as healthcare providers. Therefore, DHCS has no authority to reimburse pharmacist services

AB 1114 authorizes DHCS to establish a system for pharmacists to provide services in Medi-Cal. The law calls for adding pharmacist services to the schedule of benefits. Furthermore, the law requires the rate of reimbursement for pharmacist services to be at 85% of the fee schedule for physician services under the Medi-Cal program and would require DHCS to establish a fee schedule. The law takes effect immediately as the bill was written as an urgency statute.

This is an exciting milestone for California pharmacists in expanding patient access to pharmacist services.
