Dear Giving Guide readers: Last year, we connected with you about how the concept of giving was evolving due to the pandemic, and this year, the message is somewhat the same. We all continue to seek new and creative ways to contribute to the betterment of our community, especially given the ever-changing rules and regulations.

One of the developments that will likely have a significant impact on charities and nonprofits is government spending. Even prior to the pandemic, the federal government had been spending at a rate that has given rise to questions about how entitlement programs (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and others) will continue to be funded long-term. Now, the stimulus spending to support the economy during the pandemic as well as the potential new infrastructure bill put the federal budget in an even greater pinch, dwarfing any deficit estimates that were previously predicted. But what does this mean for charities, nonprofits, and donors?

The primary implication will likely be taxes. Corporate and individual tax rates may rise in order to cover the unprecedented amount of government spending. In addition, tax breaks that are available today for charitable giving, as well as other deductions, could be scaled back or eliminated altogether.

The spike in government spending on pandemic-related programs may also cause grants that were previously available to fund many charities and nonprofits to be curtailed.

All of this means that it’s now more important than ever before for our giving-minded community to join together for the common good. We must help add value to the programs that are supporting those who are most in need, especially as it looks likely that government support may not be at the level it previously has been.

Bear in mind that while charitable giving includes cash and other donations, there are other ways to contribute, such as volunteering at hospitals and showing appreciation to our health care workers. You may not get a tax deduction for these intangible contributions, but they are just as important.

We believe that for a community to thrive, the businesses that operate within it must have an unwavering dedication beyond the services they provide. We strive to lead by this example. With so many choices for offering personal and corporate support, the Giving Guide is a practical resource to help align your charitable giving with meaningful mission-driven services addressing a variety of local, national and international issues including poverty, homelessness, mental health, children’s health and wellbeing, and health initiatives. In the pages that follow, each charity provides you information about who they help and how.

You will learn actionable ways your company can provide donations, corporate sponsorships, board opportunities, and volunteer hours, which often is the most needed resource for some of these organizations.

I encourage you to also look for opportunities for your teams or departments to volunteer together to build meaningful comradery and a stronger sense of community that cannot be replicated in most other team building exercises.

The four American National corporate locations in Galveston and League City, Texas, Albany, New York, and Springfield, Missouri, share company-wide giving initiatives. Additionally, we proudly support dozens of local charities on a regular basis with financial and volunteer support. Several of those charities have a dedicated liaison who works to deepen the relationship, guaranteeing a mutually beneficial partnership. In addition, we try to facilitate individual employees finding their passion. Each of our employees across the nation receives a paid day to volunteer with a local charity of their choice and we encourage team members to serve on local charitable boards.

I have thought countless times over the last year and a half how fortunate we are in Springfield to live in a community so aware and responsive to the collective good and to the needs that exist among us. To state the obvious, 2020 was a rough year and 2021 has yet to offer a return to normalcy. Nonprofits and service organizations are stretched to the seams. So many of the needs served by area organizations have only intensified in the wake of COVID-19, while money and manpower are harder to come by.

The staff of Springfield Business Journal and I are always proud to roll out the Giving Guide. We know area nonprofits are too seldom the central focus of our editorial coverage to truly tell their stories.

We are equally convinced that the health and well-being of these service agencies, charities, arts organizations and health resources are at the very heart of our community and create the environment required for local business to thrive.

Beginning with SBJ’s first edition of the Giving Guide in 2012, we received numerous emails and phone calls of affirmation from the various participating agencies that this was the vehicle they had been looking for to reach an influential audience with their messages. The Giving Guide has become a critical tool for area nonprofits to communicate their mission and goals, seek volunteers and donations, and more importantly share their successes.

Four Reasons Why You Need an Estate Plan Now For many, the idea of estate planning is reserved only for the wealthy. This is not true—an estate plan can and should be used by everyone. A formal estate plan can provide comfort that you will be able to leave a legacy by providing for your loved ones or achieving charitable desires. It also can reduce the risk of unnecessary expenses, delays, and potential estate taxes.

Here are four reasons to develop an estate plan: 1. Provide for Your Loved Ones Planning allows you to decide who will make decisions on your behalf should you no longer be able to do so. It also allows you to choose who will receive your assets, and when. You can provide asset protection for your beneficiaries, which may shield the assets from potential creditors or from a spouse in a divorce. You also can provide instruction on how you want the funds to be used to benefit your family members and friends.

2. Maintain Privacy by Avoiding Probate & Reduce Administration Expenses Without a formal estate plan, the state in which you live determines who will receive your assets. Creating an estate plan and using legal documents such as a will or trust allow you to direct the distribution of your assets.

If your estate plan only includes a will, you can avoid the state determination of who will receive your assets, but may not avoid the lengthy, expensive, and public probate process. By creating and retitling your assets into a trust or adding beneficiary designations to specific assets, you can further protect your assets while also avoiding the potentially costly and time-consuming probate process.

3. Reduce Potential Estate Taxes With the ever-changing political environment, active and flexible estate planning is more important than 8 · 2021 GIVING GUIDE

Lindsay Owens & Gretchen Cliburn ever. The current estate and gift tax exemption is $11.7 million (indexed for inflation) per individual. This exemption is the amount of assets that can pass to the next generation without federal or gift tax under current tax law. This amount is set to revert to $5 million (indexed for inflation) in 2026 and could change even sooner. For those subject to the estate tax, their estate will pay a 40 percent tax on the assets above the exemption amount.

4. Incorporate Charitable Gifting

For many families, charitable giving may be an important part of the legacy they want to leave behind. It also can engage and teach future generations to look for opportunities to help others. Your estate plan can include strategies for gifting and reflect the causes that are most important to you. There are many different vehicles depending on your charitable intentions, dollar amounts and the timing of your gifts. Including charitable planning in your estate could save significant tax dollars while creating a legacy for your family.

There are many estate planning tools and techniques that can help you customize your plan for your unique family and the legacy you want to leave for future generations while helping you reduce or eliminate the potential for paying estate tax. Teaching children the importance of community involvement and giving back is essential. Parents work hard to make sure their kids get a proper education so they can grow up to be productive members of society. Beyond the importance of writing, science and math, civic engagement and philanthropy are key to success.

Philanthropy Starts Early Compassion and a desire to help others are learned at an early age. Research shows that around two years of age, children start to display genuine empathy, understanding how other people feel. A 2011 study (van Deth) demonstrated how the basic social concepts formed in children before adolescence remain stable throughout adulthood.

Like most parenting, lessons are better “caught” than “taught.” Parents who model generosity and talk about the importance of giving back help their children to be involved in their communities. Parents can encourage critical thinking by teaching children the root causes of important issues and presenting ways to take action.

Family Foundations Establishing a private foundation is a great way for families to support the people, places or things that are most important to them. The decision to focus giving around a specific cause or geographic region is a great way to carry on a family name and reputation.

Family foundations derive their funds from members of a single family. Members of the family often serve as board members and play an important role in deciding how the funds will be dispersed.

Years ago, most family foundations were connected to estates and the wishes of founders. The focus of giving was often connected to religious institutions or an alma mater. Today’s donors are more outcome based and are challenging legacy notions. They are looking for measurable impact.

Over the past few years, many foundations have moved beyond “How can we help individuals?” to “How can we change the system?” at a policy level.

More expansive in view than simply grant making, this often includes hands-on advocacy and scaling impact.

Another shift is in distribution. There is movement away from arbitrary payout to responsive payout— making decisions based on needs and opportunities.

Also, families are moving beyond traditional use of one vehicle to incorporating multiple vehicles to accomplish their objectives. While traditional grant making is a powerful tool, some families are now incorporating donor-advised funds, C4 entities, LLC structures and impact investing.

The Smarter Way to Make Charitable Contributions IRA charitable rollovers, also commonly known as qualified charitable distributions, are only allowed for individuals aged 70.5 years and older and can be taken as part of satisfying your required minimum distribution from your IRA. A person can certainly max out that required minimum distribution with qualified charitable distributions, but they can also choose to give more than that required minimum up to $100,000, which is the cap on excludable taxable income related to a qualified charitable distribution.

Anyone can donate to charity and may receive a tax deduction for that contribution if it is given to a qualified charitable organization. However, from a taxation perspective, the rollover structure is more beneficial when it comes to taxes because it is essentially shown as a direct reduction of taxable income versus an itemized deduction on a tax return. There are situations where just claiming a charitable donation as an itemized deduction won’t net the donor a tax deduction but donating as a charitable rollover from your IRA will automatically provide a tax benefit.

In order for these charitable distributions to provide these tax benefits, the money must be donated directly from the IRA custodian to the charitable organization. The taxpayer wishing to donate and receive the benefit should not be the proverbial middleman for the donation or the donation will not qualify for the same tax reduction benefits.

It is important that the taxpayer wishing to donate to nonprofits through an IRA charitable rollover communicates with their tax adviser and their IRA 12 · 2021 GIVING GUIDE

custodian to be sure they receive the charitable distributions letter along with their 1099-R to provide to their tax preparer so that the proper treatment can be made in order to receive the most benefit.

It is also important to find out whether the organization to which you’re donating is eligible to provide you with a deduction. There are some limitations as to where donations can made in order to receive the tax deduction so be sure to check that the organization fits the IRS requirements. Your tax preparer or IRA custodian should perform due diligence before the check is written but as the taxpayer, you also want to be certain to request that your donation is being made to an eligible nonprofit.

Another tax benefit for structuring your charitable contribution this way is that it will keep your adjusted gross income (or taxable income) low, which provides greater tax benefits for possibly receiving higher tax credits and deductions that might be phased out at higher tax levels. For retired individuals, the taxable portion of your Social Security income increases proportionately the higher the income is that flows into the rest of your tax return. If you can keep the rest of your taxable income low that will minimize the taxable portion of your Social Security income.

If you’re not yet retired, this is something to keep in mind and plan for the future.

It should be noted that this type of rollover is only eligible for use with a traditional IRA.

The Fiduciary Duties of a Nonprofit Board Member By: Barb Houser, CPA It takes more than dedication and enthusiasm for your nonprofit’s cause and programs to be an effective board member. The most critical role for all board members is being a fiduciary. This means, among other things, that they can be trusted to always act in your nonprofit’s best interest, avoid unnecessary risk, make decisions thoughtfully and execute their responsibilities efficiently and effectively.

Core Duties Not all board members are aware of their duties, so it is up to the nonprofit organization to provide adequate training and support to make sure they understand them. In general, a fiduciary has three primary responsibilities: 1. Care: Board members must exercise reasonable care in overseeing an organization’s financial and operational activities. Although disengaged from day-to-day business matters, they should understand the nonprofit’s overall mission, programs and structure, make informed decisions, and consult others (including outside experts) when appropriate.

The key to resolving conflicts of interest, whether real or perceived, is disclosure. The board member involved should disclose the relevant facts to the board and abstain from any discussion or vote on the issue — unless the board determines that they may participate.

He usually spent his days with his private staff, two of which are college guys, and the other his Papa. He also worked with Preferred Employment through pre-vocational training and this too had to stop. With the stay-at-home order, Colson’s schedule was turned upside down. When I heard AIA was offering some classes via Zoom, I jumped on the opportunity.

I think his favorite part was being able to see his friends and teachers through the computer. Since he is no longer in school, COVID-19 was just an automatic shutdown for him to the outside world. The Zoom classes brought his world right into our living room! He has had a few struggles, and we have reinforced the same strategies he would use in the seated classes. So, if something is overwhelming, he can always take a break. He has also become more vocal and he lets the teachers know if he is having trouble following along or hearing them. While the Zoom classes have been great during these unusual times, nothing can replace the human contact he is craving. He can’t wait to see Miss Jamie and Miss Melissa in person and sing and dance. He is also ready to start theater and prepare another live play!

In conclusion, the Zoom AIA classes have been awesome for Colson! We are so glad they found a creative way to still connect with the students and keep them active in the program.”

Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks has state contracts to run five DMV offices in the Ozarks. This pays for all administrative costs of the organization.

BCFO relies on fundraising events like our fashion show featuring breast cancer survivors “A Time To Share”, “Cycle For Life”, “Jeepin For A Cure”, Joplin’s “Pink Ribbon Gala” and our signature event in Springfield, “Hooked on Dance” to raise most of our annual program budget. We also sell state tax credits, receive local and state grants, corporate and private donations and planned gifts.

12 Month Goals In an effort to offer more meaningful financial assistance to families in crisis, BCFO is reviewing our financial assistance payment model. Our goal is to provide more financial assistance per family during treatment.

Currently we offer up to $5,000 per client. BCFO is also raising money and applying for grant money to start a new diagnostic mammogram reimbursement program for women under 35. Currently, there are no dedicated programs that help uninsured women in this age category with the tests needed to detect breast cancer.

Most of our funding comes from event sponsorships, private donations and planned giving. Anyone can help BCFO by visiting any of the five DMV offices we run in and around Springfield and Joplin. These offices help BCFO pay for all administrative costs so we can use 100% of donations for programs.

The teacher was concerned that the student wouldn’t have the money the needed so she reached out to see if Care to Learn could help. Our chapter was able to get the student an appointment with an optometrist in Springfield and even made sure she had the transportation she needed to get to the appointment.”

of hardship and searching. CASA volunteer, Julie Jacob, took on his case not knowing what to expect.

She ended up walking a long, five-year journey with Caiden through many ups and downs. She helped him through significant struggles and difficulties. Julie was the picture of stability and consistency in the life of this child.

During Caiden’s time in foster care, he was moved to multiple foster homes and had to transition to a new school each time. He also faced many case worker changes due to turnover at the foster care agency.

Research shows that when a child has multiple changes during their case, such as new foster homes, schools, and caseworkers, it sets the child’s case and academic progress back by six months each time. The consistency of our CASA program ensures that children are not set back with every change and transition. Through it all, CASA Julie was there for Caiden.

Each time Caiden moved to a new foster home or school, Julie was the consistent person showing up for him. With each case worker change, Julie was the consistent advocate to ensure everyone involved understood his unique needs. Julie consistently showed Caiden that no matter what, she would always be there for him. Whether it was shooting hoops with Caiden, telling silly jokes together, or listening to his stories, Julie was the light that kept him moving forward.

Julie was there when the Judge officially ordered a new last name for Caiden and approved his adoption with his forever family. Ordinary people, like Julie, do extraordinary things in the lives of children.

Volunteer: CASAs are trained volunteers who advocate for the best interest of children in foster care.

The CASA visits the foster child at least twice a month and attends important meetings and court hearings on behalf of the child. When a child has a CASA, the child performs better in school, has more stability in their foster home, and exits foster care into a safe, permanent home more quickly than children without a CASA. Since 2017, there has been an 85% increase in the number of children entering foster care each month. We need volunteers to ensure foster children have a consistent advocate speaking up for them. Donate: Individuals and businesses can get involved by sponsoring events, serving on the board or committees, purchasing pinwheels and holiday cards, and allowing staff time to volunteer. Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri provides services for residents of the 39 southernmost counties in Missouri, with offices in Springfield, Joplin, Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, and Van Buren.

Funding Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri receives funding from a variety of sources including donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Other contributions include planned gifts, in-kind donations of goods, fundraising events/sponsorships, state and federal grants, and proceeds derived from Missouri tax credit programs. Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri has several tax credit programs available. Please call 417720-4213 with questions and for eligibility guidelines.

12 Month Goals Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri (CCSOMO) will continue to operate all of its programs and provide services without interruption as it has throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. CCSOMO will service households struggling as a result of the pandemic by facilitating rent, mortgage, and utilities assistance. CCSOMO will seek out additional funding to increase its capacity to respond to the pandemic and serve the vulnerable. CCSOMO will also seek out additional opportunities to fill gaps in social services in the communities it serves, such as the Rancho Temporary Emergency Shelter Program for homeless families and women in need of medical respite; and the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program. Due to the success of LifeHouse Crisis Maternity Home in Springfield, CCSOMO will begin construction and open a second crisis maternity home in Cape Girardeau. The two facilities will provide 24/7 transitional residential housing to homeless pregnant women and their infants/young children with the goal of assisting them in achieving self-sufficiency through comprehensive case management, access to health care, education, and supportive services. CCSOMO’s general contracting social enterprise, Purpose Home Repair, will address construction workforce shortages by offering free construction pre-apprenticeship and on-the-job training to individuals with barriers to employment. CCSOMO will safely increase the number of volunteers and volunteer opportunities, so individuals with a passion to serve the vulnerable have an opportunity to share their time and talent.

Testimonials The loss of a spouse led one Veteran to losing his business and home. “I crawled into a bottle,” he says. Homeless and hungry, a stranger gave the Veteran $40, which he used to buy some food and a sheet of plastic at Lowe’s. “I went out into the woods, dug a hole, and lived in it for the winter, under the plastic and leaves.” Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri helped this Veteran secure emergency housing at a local motel, and permanent housing soon after. “I’m working again and thanks to my case manager, I am getting my life back.”

Mission Statement The Child Advocacy Center supports child abuse investigations, provides access to critical services, and raises community awareness to prevent and reduce child abuse and neglect in Southern Missouri.

Service Area As the largest child advocacy center in the state of Missouri, services cover 16 counties in the southwest and southcentral regions of the state.

Funding The Child Advocacy Center is funded through a combination of government grants, exam reimbursements, and contributions from sponsors, foundations, and individuals. The community support the Child Advocacy Center receives is critical to supporting the mission and providing the much-needed services for child victims of abuse who live in this region. The Child Advocacy Center is grateful for each, and every financial gift received as those gifts represent more than just financial support. Those gifts represent community members acting to stand with and support the most vulnerable children in our community.

12 Month Goals Over the next year, the Child Advocacy Center is focused on continuous improvement of services and community engagement. Specifically, the goals are: 1. Identify and address barriers to equitable access to the Child Advocacy Center 2. Develop new and leverage existing community partnerships to enhance wrap-around services that meet the needs of child victims and their supportive caregivers 3. Engage the community in being active participants in the prevention of child abuse

How People and Businesses Can Help The first step to helping the Child Advocacy Center is for the community to become aware and educated on the prevalence of child abuse taking place in our community. The Child Advocacy Center offers training on

topics including abuse awareness and education, identifying signs of abuse and responding in a child-friendly manner and much more. We encourage everyone to engage so that we, as a community, can move towards decreasing, and hopefully, eliminating this blight on this community’s report card.

The opportunities for community involvement are vast. The ongoing work of the Child Advocacy Center is strongly supported by volunteers who are just as committed to helping child victims as the Child Advocacy Center staff. Volunteer opportunities include event support, hosting no sew blanket making days, supply drives and service projects around the center.

The Child Advocacy Center also relies on the financial generosity of others to continue operating. The Champion for Children and Neighborhood Assistance Program Tax Credits (50% tax credit) are available for qualified donations. Donors and sponsors help provide the financial backing to ensure we can continue to provide high quality services to the most vulnerable children in our community. While not everyone can offer financial support, everyone can do something: donations of time, talent or gifts-in-kind.

Convoy of Hope is a faith-based, nonprofit organization with a driving passion to feed the world through children’s feeding initiatives, community outreaches and disaster response.

First and foremost, Convoy of Hope is committed to seeing through the pledges we’ve made to people in the midst of global upheaval. For example, Convoy will continue to feed 387,000+ children every school day and is planning to grow that number. Convoy of Hope will also continue to provide food banks in the Springfield area with the food they give to people who need it. Convoy of Hope is innovating new ways to reach people and is looking to empower and resource local communities as partners in the work we do to alleviate poverty. Convoy is starting a leadership development program for students to awaken the next generation of leaders and show them their incredible potential. Convoy of Hope is also committed to increasing access to life-giving water, whether that’s through water wells, water filters or bottles of water during times of crisis. Convoy of Hope will keep providing more scalable ways to help local communities come together to address needs through community events and community engagement.

Service Area Since 1994, Convoy has served more than 163 million people in all 50 states and 127 countries by partnering with churches, businesses, government agencies and other nonprofits to provide hope to the impoverished, hungry and hurting. Convoy provides services through six programs: Disaster Services, Children’s Feeding, Agriculture, Community Events, Women’s Empowerment and Rural Initiatives.

Funding Convoy of Hope is funded through private donations, corporate donations and in-kind gifts. Without the support of our incredible partners and donors, Convoy couldn’t provide hope in situations where it’s so desperately needed. In fact, 2020 was a record year for Convoy of Hope — the $284 million worth of food, water and other products that were donated allowed Convoy to serve more than 200 million meals during the COVID-19 crisis. The CoxHealth Foundation receives its funding from those impacted by the quality care provided by CoxHealth. This includes individuals, corporations, foundations, grateful patients, grant funders, participants in special events and anyone interested in furthering the cause of quality healthcare through CoxHealth.

Funding sources include grants, honorariums, memorials and estate gifts, as well as direct donations to service lines including cancer, stroke, heart disease, senior health and others, and other donations directed to specific causes or fundraising campaigns.

The community can provide immediate help by getting a vaccination against COVID-19. If we can slow the spread of the virus, CoxHealth and hospitals across the country will have hope for a return to normal someday in the future. Today, CoxHealth continues to need financial support to recover from the financial devastation of the pandemic. Hospitals like CoxHealth are paying 10 to 15 times the normal cost of supplies, PPE, required safety devices and fees for traveling nurses, therapists and other required healthcare providers to fill the staffing requirements dictated by the severity of the virus. In the last 12 months our goal has been to be present and available for our patients, our staff and our community. The CoxHealth Foundation continues to focus its efforts on supporting the needs of our health system and those it serves as COVID-19 rages on in our region. In the immediate future, the Foundation is seeking ongoing support for the daily needs of staff, patients and visitors; whether it be donated PPE, snacks or meals for staff who are unable to leave their patients’ sides or finding funding to cover the cost of dozens of rented ventilators to have the equipment at the ready. The Foundation team is working to match the kindness of donors to the immediate and urgent needs unforeseen prior to the virus. In addition to being COVID-19 prepared, the CoxHealth Foundation continues to work to grow its 31 Patient Service Funds to ensure the ability to provide a helping hand up to patients in every area of the health system. It is these funds like the Cancer Services Fund, Heart Fund, Stroke Fund, ALS Fund and the remaining 26, that are unique in their ability to provide resources that patients are not able to find anywhere else in our community. Elevate Branson receives funding for a variety of their programs, including Elevate Work and Elevate Outreach, from generous donors, grants, and internally generated revenue. Elevate Branson’s most recent program development, Elevate Community, provides sustainable and affordable housing to neighbors experiencing homelessness or residing in weekly and extended stay motels in the Branson area. In conjunction with local, state and federal grants, funding for this project is received from tiny home sponsors dedicated to providing clean, safe, and affordable housing to low-income residents of the Branson community.

12 Month Goals In the next 12 months, Elevate Branson will have the first 24 out of 70 tiny homes of Elevate Community on property and move-in ready. Elevate Branson’s goal is to have the first installment of 24 permanent homes, if not more, sponsored within the next year by charitable partners looking to leave a legacy and help change the lives of neighbors in need of affordable housing.

The development of Elevate Community coupled with workforce development training and the additional services Elevate Branson provides on-site, will serve people holistically in order to provide long-term and sustainable support.

A CITY WHERE NO ONE SLEEPS OUTSIDE. Plans for Eden Village 3 are in motion and The Gathering Tree, the mother organization of Eden Village, while in awe of what the community has come together to make possible, is striving for as many Eden Villages as it takes to end homelessness in Springfield.

Can you imagine not knowing where you will sleep tonight? When or if you will eat again? Carrying every single possession, you own? Not being able to find the help you need for your mental or physical disorders?

In the fall of 2010, David and Linda Brown formed The Gathering Tree, an organization focused on serving the city’s homeless population. The Gathering Tree opened its doors multiple nights a week to give the homeless a place to rest and refresh from the afternoon to evening hours.

Throughout its time of operation, it allowed the founders to gain helpful insight as to the best way to serve the homeless community. As a result of this experience, they came to the realization that while there were many organizations focused on serving those living on the streets, there were few focused on getting them off the streets.

On November 1, 2018, the Gathering Tree

closed its doors and began to concentrate all efforts and resources on the concept to create a long-term solution to homelessness: Eden Village.

In August of 2018, Eden Village's first, official resident moved into America's first, of its kind, master planned manufactured tiny home community to serve Springfield's chronically homeless.

Located at 2801 E. Division St are 31 tiny houses where residents pay $300 a month for their 400-ish sq foot forever home -- this isn't enough to break even for what is spent on staff, maintenance, utilities and maintaining the neighborhood, but that's not the point of this non-profit, co-founder Linda Brown was quoted saying.

Eden Village 2 broke ground on 3155 East Brower St in fall of 2019, stalled some because of COVID in 2020, but has already filled half of its 24 homes. Upon its completion, the two Eden Village properties will have reduced the chronically homeless population in Springfield by 25%.

Last, but certainly not least of The Gathering Tree's efforts is its overnight RV park located at 3839 W Chestnut Expressway. Revive66 is a campground where those who need a place to stay for the night can pay $10 to rent a camper from 8p-8a, Monday through Friday. There are showers, restrooms, and laundry onsite as well as staffing and security. Individuals, churches and local nonprofits can purchase nights in bulk to provide for those who can't afford the $10 fee.

Through our Social Distancing Service Challenge, Ashlie from Springfield found a way to help her community. She said “I am helping supply a nursing home where my aunt works as an RN with masks after I found out she was having to wear the same paper mask for days. I feel that I am doing my part by helping the people who are going to work putting themselves in at risk. It also shows them that we are grateful for what they are doing even if we can’t say it to their face and hug them.”

Service Area Girls on the Run® of Southwest Missouri serves an average of 350 girls in Greene and Christian counties each year through participation in one of our two 10-week program offerings. We are an independent council of Girls on the Run International which has a network of over 200 councils across all 50 states and has delivered its evidence-based programming to more than 2 million girls since 1996.

Funding Girls on the Run of Southwest Missouri is funded through program revenues, program sponsorships, private and corporate donors, special events, such as our annual 5k, grants and through our SoleMates peer-to-peer charity fundraising program.

Dee Weller and her daughter, Paige, had been in rental properties for years. They’ve encountered numerous problems with their rentals that were not being fixed, including broken appliances, a leaking roof and more.

“You’re either paying a lot for something you can’t afford, or paying less, but you get what you get,” said Dee. After a particularly frustrating week in a hotel room while their rental property was being fixed, Dee researched and reached out to Habitat for Humanity, applied to be a homeowner, and was approved!

Habitat for Humanity serves residents from Greene, Christian and Webster Counties, but currently only builds and repairs homes in Greene County.

Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, Missouri’s model of homeownership leverages volunteer labor, financial contributions and donated materials. Like all nonprofits, we depend on volunteers and donations. Unlike other nonprofits, we have a steady form of income through ReStore sales and payments from homeowners. The ReStore accepts donated items from the community and sells those donations to the public.

Our homeowners purchase their Habitat home with a 0% interest (0% APR) affordable mortgage and their mortgage payments fund future homes. These sources of income, along with generous financial donors and grants, allow us to maintain a consistent level of service to our community.

12 Month Goals 1. Continue neighborhood revitalization efforts in Woodland Heights neighborhood located in Springfield’s Zone 1 by collaboratively working to improve the community’s quality of life.

2. Build and renovate 4-6 houses a year for Habitat partner homebuyers living at 30-80% of the area’s median income.

3. Continue to grow our home preservation and repair programs that assist homeowners without the financial means to repair their home. Habitat serves nearly 100 households each year with repairs ranging from exterior cleanup to roof replacement.

By partnering with Habitat for Humanity, the Wellers will soon own a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home.

Habitat is working with Dee to accommodate her accessibility needs, such as providing lower light switches, higher power outlets and appliances that she is able to use and operate without support. “A lot of things are going to be more accessible to me, and I’ve never lived in a house that’s accessible for me, so I’m excited.” Paige is particularly looking forward to finally be in a place she knows is her permanent home and to add a dog to the family, as they cannot currently do so in their rental.

Dee continued, “I’m excited to own my own home and do it how I’d like. Of course, it is a huge responsibility, but I’m ready for it. I’m a responsible person – absolutely!” The Wellers’ home is already constructed, but renovations began in mid-June 2021 and should be completed in fall 2021. “Forever home. That’s the way we look at it. I’m never moving again. We’ve worked hard for it, and it feels great!”

Mission Statement The mission of Isabel’s House is to provide immediate refuge for children ages birth to 12 whose families are in crisis. By partnering with families and the community, we will strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect.

Service Area Isabel’s House welcomes any family seeking help, without geographical boundaries, but most of the children who stay at Isabel’s House reside in Greene and the immediate surrounding counties.

Funding Isabel’s House is primarily funded through generous private donations, including individual, family and corporate gifts & sponsorships. Additional funding for Isabel’s House comes from grants and foundation gifts, as well as a renewable state contract from the Missouri Department of Social Services, Children’s Division. Every gift matters and every dollar is needed to maintain the highest quality of care for kids and to support families in crisis.

12 Month Goals In 2021, we reached a significant milestone serving over 5000 children. As we enter our 15th year providing free, private services to local families in need, we’ll be focused on continuing to improve our trauma-informed and evidence-based practices and deepen-

ing the impact on the parents and children we serve.

Additional goals include, navigating the new impacts of COVID-19 while continuing to serve kiddos and families safely, and welcoming a new executive director, Vickie Dudley.

Funding Since 1959, the Junior League of Springfield has contributed over 1.3 million volunteer service hours (averaging 20,000 annually) and over $4.6 million to our community. We fund and develop new projects designed to benefit Springfield, which include a city emergency fund, grant opportunities, leadership training for our members and scholarships for area women. Some programs the Junior League helped develop include: Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, Ozarks Public Television, Child Advocacy Center, The History Museum of the Ozarks, The Springfield Ballet, Ozarks Food Harvest, The Discovery Center of Springfield and Isabel’s House. People can support OACAC by helping us reach those who will benefit from services and supporting our services through volunteerism, social media sharing, donations and event sponsorships.

OACAC was organized as a nonprofit in 1965 to work toward alleviating the causes and conditions of poverty.

Services include Family Planning, Foster Grandparent Program, Head Start/Early Head Start, Housing Assistance, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Neighborhood/Community Centers and Weatherization.

It was about so much more than photographs: I felt seen. I felt heard. I was amazed that someone had anticipated this need I felt deep in my soul to have beautiful documentation of my daughter’s life - the good and the bad. I knew that I had finally found someone who understood us, who knew that children don’t always get better, and that what we needed wasn’t another person telling us that everything would be fine. We needed someone to get into the trenches of reality with us. Since our first On Angels’ Wings photos six years ago, Ellie has had many more heart surgeries and medical procedures, including a miraculous lifesaving heart and double lung transplant.

Through it all, OAW supported us and anticipated our needs. Our OAW photos over the years document not just the stages of Ellie’s medical journey, but also the many stages we have gone through as a family.

I have no recollection of the photographer in the room that day, but the photos I received are a gift that never stops giving. I look back on them often, to remind me how far she’s come. To remind me that miracles do happen. And to never lose hope. And I am so grateful for that.

Mission Statement Ozarks Food Harvest’s mission is to Transform Hunger into Hope. As the only food bank serving southwest Missouri, Ozarks Food Harvest serves 270 food pantries and programs. The Food Bank provides more than 23 million meals annually.

To promote literacy by providing free resources to adults and children in Southwest Missouri.

Our mission speaks to all of southwest Missouri, but the majority of those we serve live in Greene and Christian Counties. Technology has afforded OLC the opportunity to serve anyone willing to learn who has access to the Internet. Currently, two OLC students live in Saudi Arabia and can maintain their connection to their volunteer tutor for weekly lessons. Pitt Technologies donated 20 Amazon Fire Tablets available to our students and tutors who may have access but need a device for learning.

Funding OLC is primarily funded by foundational grants and donations as well as private, sustaining donations from local citizens. Seventy-five percent of our working funds come from major donors: United Way of the Ozarks, The Darr Family Foundation, Stanley and Elaine Ball Foundation, Musgrave Foundation, O’Reilly, Nora Roberts, Bernie, and Pam Burrier, and past/present OLC Board of Directors.

12 Month Goals OLC is looking forward to the coming year with new community collaboratives and internal organizational goals:

• Talk to neighbors, church friends, your children’s teachers, your workout group, your colleagues, and any others on your daily path about the Ozarks Literacy Council. Let them know what we do and how we service our community’s growth in literacy.

• Be a family and community example: make the value of reading a priority in your own life.

Testimonials Each month, we ask our volunteers, students, and/or parents to share celebrations. Here are just a few: Chad has improved to the point of asking for extra material. This is such a great thing! He used to hate having to read, and now he wants more.

Olive is enjoying her sessions so much she has increased her weekly sessions from 1 hour to 1 and 1/2 hours. In addition, she has finished all of her first workbooks and told me she is “starting to feel smart.”

From Donna, an adult student: “Now not only am I an independent reader, but in September of 2020, with God’s help, I moved out of the nursing home into my own apartment. I have enrolled in OTC and am working toward my GED.” From a volunteer: “Being a reading tutor is so rewarding.

I knew I wanted to help improve literacy in our community, but I didn’t realize how amazing it would be to see your students learning and changing their lives.”

• Partner with Williams Elementary School in launching a new Reading Resource Plan, #BookItMustangs, in support of young readers building their home libraries and teachers supporting literacy as a connection to community.

• Finalize and implement a virtual tutor training course to build a larger, stronger outreach to new volunteers who want to help others learn to read.

• Expand our core volunteer base to build a reserve of trained tutors who are readily available.

• Continue to advocate for literacy through the distribution of free books to homes in our community.

• Continue to serve all citizens with a willingness and desire to improve their reading with free literacy support.

Service Area Rescue One services southwest Missouri counties, with Greene county being the main operating area. Rescue One collaborates with surrounding county law enforcement to assist in the rescue and care for animals in need that do not have other resources such as Animal Control.

Rescue One has dreamed for years of building a facility that would provide us the ability to intake and board more emergency rescues, allow us to partner with domestic violence shelters to temporarily house animals for affected families, and open a nonprofit veterinary clinic that would provide low cost services to the public.

The land has been found and we are working on raising funds to begin construction

How People and Businesses Can Help Rescue One is always in need of more fosters and volunteers. There is a wide variety of ways that people can volunteer, such as assistance at the office and clinic, walking dogs, transporting animals and fundraising. Fostering is no cost to the foster. All expenses are covered

by Rescue One. These animals only need a place to lay their head and be loved while waiting to be adopted.

Donations are always needed, especially with our facility project beginning! The anticipated cost of the facility and land together is $4 million.

Testimonials Fiona’s story- Fiona came to us very emaciated after being dumped by Fellows Lake. Despite her starvation, Fiona was a very sweet dog, with a pleasant temperament toward people. Fiona was in no shape to be adopted out, but thanks to the many generous donors who contributed supplies and medical care, she regained her proper weight and we could begin the process of finding her a forever home. Months later she found the perfect home. Finally, she is a happy dog and has a human who loves her!

Artie’s story - Artie was found when a truck driver pulled over on the side of the road to rest near Carthage. Artie came up to his truck begging to be saved. The driver refused to leave until he was rescued so one of our volunteers raced to get him! Artie was emaciated and was

missing majority of his hair leaving his skin fragile and irritated. Once Artie got to his foster home his happygo-lucky personality started to show. Zander’s story - Zander was rescued in Stone County.

It would have been impossible to count all of the punctures on his poor body. Some of his teeth had been pulled, which is not uncommon in bait dogs. He also had a fractured scapula and broken ribs. He was hospitalized for over a week and was unable to get up for 5 days.

After several months of rest and love, he recovered! He is a wonderful, loving dog.

Topher’s story - Topher was found after being dumped in the trash. His stomach was very enlarged, and several liters of fluid had to be drained from his stomach. He was sent to the MU Vet Hospital where he was diagnosed with Cor triatriatum dexter, which is a very rare birth defect. He had corrective surgery and is looking forward to living long and happy life!

Mission Statement Directly improve the health and well-being of children and families in the Ozarks through two Ronald McDonald Houses in Springfield (near Cox South Hospital and within Mercy Kids), the Tooth Truck (our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile), and the Healthy Smiles Academy, daily tooth-brushing program.

Service Area Springfield’s two Ronald McDonald Houses primarily serve families from southern Missouri and northwest Arkansas, however, over the past 33 years, we’ve welcomed families from 47 states and eight countries.

The Tooth Truck and Healthy Smiles Academy focus efforts in southwest Missouri including Springfield, Willard, Billings, Clever, Ash Grove, Walnut Grove, Monett, Cassville, Verona and West Plains.

Funding The Ronald McDonald Houses are funded entirely by donations from the community including cash gifts, event proceeds, and in-kind goods and services. The Tooth Truck receives approximately $250,000 annually from Medicaid reimbursement and the $400,000+ remaining of its operating budget is funded through local contributions and grants.

12 Month Goals As the pandemic continues, keeping our children, families, staff and volunteers as safe as possible is a #1 priority. The Tooth Truck and Ronald McDonald Houses have never stopped helping children and families, with operational procedures altered to increase safety and at times, using hotels and “delivering our mission” to hospital families. Program funding is also a key priority, helping to secure the future of RMHC’s critical services. The Tooth Truck staff and board are evaluating proposals to replace our 19-year-old mobile dental clinic, thanks to ESSER funding received through

RMHC and its programs are only possible because of our amazing community support. There are multiple ways to help, both big and small. From cash contributions to collecting pop tabs, every gift makes a difference! People can underwrite snacks and meals for Ronald McDonald House families; contribute change or “Round Up” at McDonald’s; buy a Chiefs flag on Red Friday (Sept. 10); become a sponsor for the Red Shoe Gala, Share a Heart Campaign or Sertoma Grin Iron Classic; sponsor a room at the Ronald McDonald Houses; adopt items on our Wish Lists; participate in the Cup O’Cheer Tea Party in a Box (Nov.); underwrite a child’s Tooth Truck treatment plan; fund capital needs and special projects; and remember RMHC of the Ozarks in your estate plans. With the generosity of our community, we are able to take care of families so they can be there for their children. On any given night, up to 24 families are staying at our Ronald McDonald Houses during their child’s hospitalization.

The Tooth Truck has completed the treatment plans of more than 28,000 at risk children, with services valued at $19 million. Our free dental treatment is for kids qualifying for free and reduced school lunches and no child is ever turned away due to lack of Medicaid coverage. Since being forced to be homebound with the onset of COVID, I am so thankful for the efforts of SeniorAge. I enrolled in the telephone reassurance program and have thoroughly enjoyed the weekly calls from Rita, just checking in on me and chatting for a bit. Things have been so doom and gloom lately, this service has been a bright spot in my life. - Patty I’ve been a caregiver to my husband after an accident and was starting to feel exhausted. My husband was losing faith and interest in life and became depressed.

We reached out to SeniorAge who helped get both of us back on track. Safety equipment enabled my husband to bathe on his own again, and help in the home afforded me more time to enjoy life and put my efforts where they were needed most. Assistance with meals was also a huge blessing for us both. - Betty and James My medical bills had started accumulating after receiving a heart transplant, and other disabilities limited my ability to perform many daily tasks. The Salvation Army will be working with a consultant to conduct an assessment of our programs to identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps in service. We will use the results to improve our work with youth, adults, seniors, the homeless, the hungry and those impacted by disasters. This process will be an important first step toward launching a capital campaign to build a new Harbor House. The current building is over 80 years old and does not have sufficient space to meet the needs of our community’s growing homeless population.

Arron came to Harbor House in need of a safe place to stay. He had been living on the streets and was struggling to cope with severe anxiety and sleep issues. As he started at Harbor House, he began to build relationships with the staff as he opened up and shared his story. He got a job working in a restaurant where he strives for excellence every day! He is currently working and saving his money to help him get his own apartment when he leaves Harbor House.

Mission Statement To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Service Area The Ozarks Regional YMCA serves southwest Missouri through eight branches, including the G. Pearson Ward YMCA and Pat Jones YMCA in Springfield, along with facilities in Monett, Lebanon, Buffalo, Cassville and Hollister. The ORYMCA also provides services at YMCA Camp Wakonda and with its school age services.

Funding The Ozarks Regional YMCA is supported through its annual campaign, special events, membership dues and program fees. In addition, the ORYMCA is a community partner through United Way. Additional support is provided through grants.

12 Month Goals As a cause driven organization, the ORYMCA is dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In the next 12 months the ORYMCA has goals to: • Increase funding towards our annual campaign to ensure that no individual is turned away for inability to pay.

• Operational fundraising to ensure advancement of the mission to those who need the ORYMCA the most.

• Fund and implement new and needed programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

relive a week, it would be one of the many spent at Camp Wakonda. I attended every summer from 3rd10th grade, and often begged my mother to let me go to more than one session a summer. Now, I send my children and I admit that I am jealous of them. I cannot wait to hear their stories! I am happy to report that they have fallen in love with Camp Wakonda, just as I did in 1988. And, just as I did, they prefer Camp Wakonda over any summer vacation. All these years later, I still have friends and connections with my camp friends. We share a bond that’s hard to beat. I am incredibly grateful that such a place existed in my youth and am thrilled that my kids get to experience it now. It is one of the most special places on Earth.”

YMCA Camp Wakonda “When I think about the YMCA and what it means to us as a family I am reminded of their call to action when we were in desperate need. We moved to this part of town exactly one week before the pandemic lockdown. This was a new area, new school, new neighbors, new everything, and we were anxious. Mix a pandemic lockdown with a move and you will have a recipe for anxiety. The YMCA was/is an absolute saving grace for my family. I have a 7-year-old boy that loves his YMCA Family and that care and love is reciprocated. We are eternally grateful to the men/ women that stood in the gap to help us with our children.
