A Guide to How SBF Works Introduction SBF is a community foundation for all who live, work, visit, and play in Santa Barbara County.

But how does a foundation meaningfully serve such a diverse and vibrant community? Guided by our mission to mobilize collective wisdom and philanthropic capital to build empathetic, inclusive, and resilient communities, the Foundation works to build healthy relationships, partnerships, and learns from community members, like you.

At the close of 2021, the Santa Barbara Foundation along with our generous donors gave $38 million in grants, received $48.1 million in contributions, and had $591 million in assets.

Leadership in Action The Santa Barbara Foundation leads the effort to bring people and resources together to work towards improvements in the community. In 2021, we did that by facilitating dialogue among our stakeholders, including business leaders, government representatives, leaders of nonprofit organizations, residents and funders, to optimize impact shown in our ongoing COVID-19 relief support.

We formed strategic partnerships to leverage our collective strengths and maximize the power of our donors’ dollars like in the San Marcos Foothills Campaign as a fiscal sponsor. Our 2021 State of the Nonprofit Report shows how we do extensive research into the greatest needs of the community, our social sector, and the people who deliver services.

With this research, we are positioned to champion specific causes and organizations. We then advocate for the funding to transform innovative ideas into reality.

Supporting the Social Sector SBF believes a healthy, high-achieving, creative social sector enables the best for Santa Barbara County. With our nonprofit partners and field experts, we share knowledge through a series of capacity-building workshops known as our Peer Learning Convenings, leadership development, and technical assistance programs. We collaborate with organizations like Leading From Within, Association for Fundraising Professionals, The FUND for Santa Barbara, Cal Lutheran Center for Nonprofit Leadership, and BDO Financial Management Associates to develop successful approaches for improved outcomes in the community. We connect our social sector with funders and other nonprofits to make their efforts more powerful and enhance their work for generations to come.

Select Stories of Our Work Together, We Saved the San Marcos Foothills So how did a group of volunteer community members achieve the seemingly impossible task of raising over $18 million in just three months?

“We had to break all the rules for a capital campaign,” explained Nancy Weiss, a nonprofit consultant who volunteered on the campaign leadership team. “We just had to push the pedal to the metal.”

“Those small donations added up to millions. I mean, it was unbelievable,” said Marianne Parra, a community member who has ancestral ties to the San Marcos Foothills, and a member of the Foothills Forever campaign leadership team.

“It was so beautiful to see all those payments trickling in. For us, it was so emotional – to feel like our ancestors were really here helping us, trying to save these lands. And it’s not just for us, it is for everybody. It makes a huge difference in our community to have open space for everyone.”

Local philanthropists, foundations, and anonymous donors chipped in millions. Community banks and individuals provided loans. Students held bake sales benefiting the cause, while community members raised awareness and money on social media. Local businesses hosted fundraisers and donated a share of their proceeds – it was truly a community-wide effort of the highest magnitude.

The campaign reached its critical $18.6 million milestone to purchase the land in June 2021, made possible by the generous contributions of cash, pledges, and bridge loans from over 5,500 community members.

On October 20, 2021, thanks to the efforts of our State Assemblymember Steve Bennett and State Senator Monique Limón, the Foothills Forever campaign was awarded a $3 million check from the State of California towards the preservation of the San Marcos Foothills open space. This critical funding will be used to help retire the outstanding loans and bring the campaign closer to completion, including setting up a $1 million permanent endowment to help protect and steward the land in perpetuity.

Select Stories of Our Work Veterans Support For veterans and their families, it is no secret that finding support services can be a confusing and daunting ordeal. But why? What are the barriers to support services and how can they be addressed? Six years ago, Kathy Simas, then North County Director at the Santa Barbara Foundation, asked these questions.

“We knew early on that data and creating evidence-based strategies would result in healthier, better integrated, and more civicallyengaged veterans,” said Simas. “The assessment clearly identified the overwhelming need to connect our veteran community service providers in efforts to provide more leverage for funding and wrap-around services.”

The resulting Santa Barbara Veterans Needs Assessment, done in partnership with Nancy Berglass, Project Consultant and Senior Fellow at the Center for New American Security, serves as a baseline for assessing how veterans are faring in our region and identifying what services are available and accessible to them. The study made clear that better communication and collaboration between the many public, private, and nonprofit organizations serving

veterans throughout the county was necessary.

As a result of these findings, the Santa Barbara Foundation invested in the building of a capacity hub to advance the objectives from the needs assessment.

Formally launching in June 2021, the Santa Barbara County Veterans Collaborative, a 501c3 nonprofit in formation with a collective impact model, serves as a forum to foster greater communication and build collaborative relationships among public and private veteranserving organizations. The group’s goal is to develop integrated and informed services and resources that improve the wellness of veterans and their families throughout Santa Barbara County in monthly convenings.

A volunteer Board has been formed and is being led by Board President Marcee Davis, who is a veteran of the Navy. “As a Navy veteran and native Californian, born and raised in Ojai, California, I am passionate about advocating for veterans and have spent my life after service researching and learning new ways to engage, communicate, and affect positive change for this diverse population.”

Other Board Members include Michael St. Denis, Retired Lt. Col. Alvin A Salge, Victor Virgen, Joe Fletcher, Ben Johnson, and Soledad Kennedy.

With leadership from the Board, the collaboration brings organizations together to leverage their strengths to achieve social change in a structured way. It serves as a monthly convener of participating cross-sector organizations and gathers many of the same stakeholders in working groups to develop strategies that address issues relevant to local veterans.

“A collaborative that can identify gaps and needs, address services, and connect providers is a dream,” said Steve Lavagnino, Santa Barbara County Fifth District Supervisor, at the June launch. “What I see in this collaborative is a social safety net to protect and uplift our veterans. A huge thank you to this collaborative and the service providers.”

Select Stories of Our Work Providing Gateways for Our Youth As SBF works to share language and culture in Santa Barbara County, we want to note that in the African American/Black community some individuals identify as one, the other, or both. In this article, we will use both to properly represent this community.

“We are thrilled to fund the work of Gateway,” shared Petra Gomez, Program Manager at the Santa Barbara Foundation. “Connie and Audrey are doing impactful work in our community and their successes with students, commitment, and passion are evident. Their work is much needed for our community in Lompoc, for the families and students. It’s an investment that is changing children’s trajectory in life.”

Established in 2009 by Co-Executive Directors and Co-Founders Audrey Gamble and Connie Alexander, Gateway Educational Services has provided programs including assessmentbased reading and math intervention, college readiness programs, and academic summer camps. But Gateway is more than just a program for students. It engages the parents, and builds close relationships with families that often span a student’s academic career.

“We have a [high school] senior who came to us in third grade. They wanted to hold her back because she was so far under that the graph looked upside down, but within eight months’ time, we had her performing at above average,” shared Alexander. “Now she’s a senior in high school and we are assisting her in applying for college and being accepted. We made that promise to her as a third-grade girl. That’s the kind of partnership we focus on in terms of working with families. When we talk about Gateway families, that is what we mean.”

Today, there are 64 students (and their families) in the Gateway program throughout Santa Barbara County, and they are preparing to take on more. Gamble and Alexander are expanding Gateway services in Lompoc with support from a $35,000 grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation, in partnership with the Clifford and Bernadette Silliman Family Trust. This grant will 16

Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) has the highest percentage of African American/ Black students in Santa Barbara County. At the same time, according to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, the average school performance of Lompoc students, and particularly Lompoc students of color, is significantly lower than that of students in surrounding districts. The funding level for Lompoc is also lower than neighboring districts. The closure of schools due to COVID-19 is expected to result in a widening of the achievement gap.

Gateway plans to change academic outcomes and create a clear pathway to college for Lompoc students by providing early outreach and mentorship from tutors who are first-generation

people of color (African American/Black and Latinx). Gateway will engage parents and provide valuable workshops that include Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other grant and scholarship opportunities, A-G requirements (high school courses required by UC and California State universities), and story sharing/ student panels. Gateway is also partnering with the Lompoc Unified School District.

“Lompoc Unified’s focus is on student achievement and helping students reach their potential,” said Bree Valla, Deputy Superintendent at LUSD. “By partnering with Gateway Educational Service, we can not only ensure that all students are successful and get individualized support, but can also provide parents with tools so they too can assist their children. We are excited to partner to provide more opportunities for our students and families.”

By taking a holistic approach that embraces children early in their academic career, and engages parents, schools, and the wider community, Gateway has been changing the futures of youth across the county.

“We want to change the trajectory of families, and we have throughout Santa Barbara. And now we get to do that in Lompoc,” said Alexander.

SBF Supports Our Scholars Santa Barbara Foundation in partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara has provided over $930,000 in scholarships in 2021. Through over 40 Fleischmann (South County), Floro (North County), and Spaulding (top scholar) awards, it is our goal to provide opportunities for our scholars to succeed personally and professionally.
