Also in 2020, communities across the country grappled with violence toward people of color, and doubled down on the war to end systemic racism. SBF deepened our efforts to do the same in honor of the many lives lost or affected by senseless violence. Out of love for the people of Santa Barbara County, SBF continues our pursuit of genuine, sustainable diversity, equity, inclusion, and access for all.

Recognizing critical gaps in community education, SBF became an early sponsor for the UCSB Arts & Lectures Race to Justice series, which continues well into 2021. We developed our own learning series, known as Coffee & Conversations, that features topics ranging from access and equity in health care, to providing platforms for Black community leaders. We also looked inward, creating a diversity, equity, inclusion, and access task force to examine the Foundation’s programmatic and operational work and to ensure we stay true to our mission.

We all share something special that many believe buoyed our spirits over the last year. That special something is the love we have for Santa Barbara County. It is your love of our community that makes our work possible. Together with our donors, we have invested $31 million in almost 3,000 total grants in 2020. And beyond dollars, our team shows up for those who need it most.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2020 The Santa Barbara Foundation is a community foundation for all who live, work, visit, and play in Santa Barbara County. Our mission is to mobilize collective wisdom and philanthropic capital to build empathetic, inclusive, and resilient communities. Healthy relationships, partnerships, and community members, like you, are critical to achieving our mission. In 2020, these beneficial collaborations brought us closer to our goals and provided more resounding opportunities for all in our county to thrive.

COVID-19 RELIEF

NONPROFIT SUPPORT

In response to the novel coronavirus, the SBF team launched the Community Disaster Relief Fund and worked tirelessly to connect resources, co-led & co-coordinated the COVID-19 Joint Response Effort, built a rapid response grant program, and led collaborations to help our community through these unprecedented challenges.

SBF continued to support our most vulnerable and working families through our annual Behavioral Health, Health Care, Food, Shelter & Safety, and Child Care grant programs, laid groundwork in our strategies for workforce development, while also deepening our commitment to our nonprofits with the Collaboration for Social Impact.

SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT SBF branched out to provide small business grants for companies facing closures due to COVID-19. With collaborations between local municipalities, the County of Santa Barbara, and large businesses, we were able to provide much-needed relief totaling over $1 million in support.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YOUTH

In 2020, SBF and the County of Santa Barbara co-led the Census efforts along with numerous community partners. Despite significant challenges posed by COVID-19, the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee reported a 71.8% Self-Response Rate, a 3.3% increase from the 2010 Census, giving Santa Barbara County a ranking of 13 out of 58 counties in California.

In addition, an increased response rate was reported in all hard-to-count areas. This increase in the Census count will bring additional funding to our region.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access education is essential to building an inclusive county. SBF’s work included sponsoring the historic virtual Race to Justice series by UCSB Arts & Lectures, Community Environmental Council’s Resilience Roundtable, and producing our own Coffee & Conversation series that brought community members together to discuss community challenges and potential solutions.

We believe that investing in our youth, from children 0-5 all the way to college-bound teenagers, is essential to building a better future for our county. Our goal is to provide our youngest residents with options to thrive and reach their potential. SBF remains committed to our long tradition of supporting local youth, and we continue to collaborate with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara as one of the largest funders, providing $1.2 million in support in 2020 for Santa Barbara County scholars.

THANK YOU! SBF was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization and was recognized as one of Pacific Coast Business Times Best Places to Work in the Central Coast. We humbly accepted these honors on behalf of our communities across Santa Barbara County.

We have heard the same set of words used to describe the impact of COVID-19 over and over again: Unprecedented. Our “new normal.” Challenging times. These are among the many memorable terms that will come to mind when we recall this benchmark year. Yet, other words - language affirming our community’s strength and resilience - weren’t heard enough.

Determination. Respect. Love. Here are a few moments where our community exhibited these attributes and so much more.

“The social isolation aspect of our health crisis is difficult for anyone to bear,” explained Annmarie Cameron, CEO at the Mental Wellness Center, one of the agencies actively involved with the Community Wellness Team. “For those who live with serious and persistent mental illness, a supportive connection to family, friends and the community is essential to their daily experience.

Without that connection, symptoms of illness can increase. Our challenge is to keep the connection intact and offer reassurance and hope. For our community, please remember that you are not alone.”

“For the two years since the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow, we have been preparing for just such an emergency by developing our countywide Disaster Feeding Plan,” said Judith SmithMeyer, Senior Communications Manager at the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. “During this difficult time when the entire county is affected to some degree, and many people are facing hunger and food insecurity for the first time, the Disaster Feeding Plan is perfectly relevant and applicable. We are grateful to be part of a robust network of committed partners, volunteers, and donors who are making it possible for us to put our plan into action.”

Stephanie Roberson, Operations Manager at SBF and coordinator for the PPE Project, models a 3D printed face shield. The PPE Project was a collaboration between MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, UCSB, Bucket Brigade, and other communiy organizations where they created PPE products. Since March 2020, Stephanie has distributed over 11,000 PPE pieces to organizations that needed them throughout the county.

91 Organization Strong Latinx & Indigenous Migrant COVID-19 Response Task Force Funded through COVID-19 Response Grant Program

“Our efforts are grounded in social justice principles and we seek to center the voice and leadership of Latinx and indigenous migrant communities,” said Dr. Melissa Smith, Director of Health Equity Initiatives at UC Santa Barbara and Interim Coordinator for the Task Force. “That’s why this process of creating working groups and having people from these communities and community-based organizations guiding the work is so critical. It’s the opposite of the top-down approach, it’s a community-based participatory approach.”

The work of the Santa Barbara Foundation goes beyond dollars. We show up to meet community members, share resources, write stories, create webinars, celebrate successes & volunteerism, and so much more. We serve as an entry point for community-led projects in need of a fiscal sponsor, like Juneteenth Santa Barbara and Healing Justice Santa Barbara. Our welcoming Philanthropic Services Team expertly connects donors to causes and organizations where they are most passionate. We participate with community collaborations like the Community Wellness Team, Latinx & Indigenous Migrant Task Force, Santa Barbara Better Together, and the PPE Project (helping to distribute 11,000 PPE pieces throughout our region) - as just a few of the behind the scenes efforts we proudly support.

SANTA BARBARA FOUNDATION

The Santa Barbara Foundation, in partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, has a tradition of supporting our youth through scholarships. Through over 40 Major Max C. Fleischmann (South County), Gwendolyn M. Floro (North County), and Edward R. Spaulding (top scholar) awards, it is our goal to provide opportunities for our scholars to succeed personally and professionally. One of our 2020 Floro Award Recipients, Priscila Martinez-Espinoza, was a first-generation college-bound student at Santa Maria High School (SMHS). She currently attends UC Santa Cruz studying biomedical engineering. As an Academic Excellence award recipient and AP Scholar, Priscila was involved in numerous extracurricular activities and volunteer programs that have strengthened her

educational experience. She was chapter president of the SMHS California Scholarship Federation, a Spanish Honor Society member, and belonged to the campus student leadership program. Priscila also participated in the Alpine Club where she built hiking trails and promoted outdoor exploration among her peers. In her free time, she served in a variety of coaching, tutoring, and mentoring capacities. Priscila understands the value of community involvement and has donated over 400 hours of volunteer work to organizations such as THRIVE Food Pantry. Priscila finds her biggest inspiration in her family and shares, "Giving back and excelling academically have allowed me to demonstrate to my parents that their struggles were worth it."

At the Santa Barbara Foundation, we believe that the key to strengthening our extensive social sector is to provide nonprofit leaders and their organizations with the knowledge, skills, and resources to fulfill their missions. In addition to being a funder, the Foundation is committed to delivering a variety of capacity building resources as another value-add to our community. By building a healthier social sector, we can improve the social outcomes for our county.

The Foundation brings together panels of community experts, moderated by SBF President & CEO Jackie Carrera, to talk about an area of our work, a charitable giving vehicle, or to highlight creative community partnerships or challenges facing Santa Barbara County. These virtual educational events are held exclusively for donors and fundholders to help you become more engaged philanthropists.
