FROM OUR CEO We are delighted to have the opportunity to provide an update on our work on behalf of the people and communities of Santa Barbara County. While the body of our work continues to be wideranging (as this report details), two things dominated our focus in 2018: completing and launching a new 5-Year Strategic Plan and helping the greater Santa Barbara community recover from the double-disaster of a massive wild fire immediately followed by a devastating debris flow in Montecito. These were, quite simply, tragic events; ones that not only resulted in loss of life, a lengthy and frequently repeated disruption of the normal patterns of life and commerce, and the destruction of homes and critical infrastructure, but ones that also traumatized and set back both the nonprofit and business sectors. The estimated financial costs of response, repairs and future mitigation run into the billions of dollars. In that moment, it was crucial that the region’s community foundation act nimbly, intelligently and effectively, analyzing the need, developing partnerships, and perhaps most important, building a better response structure for the future. For 2018, we distributed a total of $342,700 to nonprofits assisting individuals and families affected by these disasters. We raised over a million in support of these efforts and because of good stewardship, we opened another round of funding (in early 2019) to a broader range of nonprofits to provide support for long-term recovery efforts. The disasters of 2018 also powerfully informed the completion of our Strategic Plan that was launched in October of that year. Our plan was already heading in

the direction of emphasizing support for our county’s most vulnerable populations and developing purposeful pathways to resilience and sustainable success for our region’s working families (an all too often neglected population of most philanthropies). These are the people who are the backbone of all communities, but who struggle each day with basic issues of childcare, affordable housing, and employment stability - and who are often one or two paychecks away from financial and emotional chaos. In a meaningful way, they too are a vulnerable population. We of course continued our work in providing support through our community grant opportunities. And as a learning organization, we continued to refine our efforts in grantmaking, putting an additional emphasis in 2018 on health care and behavioral health as community needs in those areas expanded. All this good work could not have been done without our generous donors, past and present, who positioned the Foundation to be able to distribute an all-time high of $30.2 million in 2018. On behalf of the trustees and staff of the Santa Barbara Foundation, I express our deep gratitude to our communities across this great county. We are proud to be your community foundation and will continue to work with you in the years to come. Respectfully and with best regards,

OUR MISSION: TO MOBILIZE COLLECTIVE WISDOM AND PHILANTHROPIC CAPITAL TO BUILD EMPATHETIC, INCLUSIVE AND RESILIENT COMMUNITIES. MOBILIZE defines action, community-building and movement-building. COLLECTIVE WISDOM refers to the Foundation’s role as a convener and partner, working with multiple constituencies to address our communities’ most pressing needs. PHILANTHROPIC CAPITAL includes all of the tools and resources that are necessary to facilitate community change, from traditional investments and grants to mission-related and program-related investments. EMPATHETIC, INCLUSIVE AND RESILIENT emphasizes our commitment to engage in communities and invest in significant and measurable impact. Empathy captures the ability to relate to another person’s feelings and even act on it. Inclusive communities respect all residents and give them full access to resources and promote equal treatment and opportunity.
