DR. CHARLES OWUBAH CEO, ACTION AGAINST HUNGER

Dr. Charles Owubah leads Action Against Hunger USA’s executive team in providing leadership and strategic direction to more than 1,600 staff across seven countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Haiti. Globally, Action Against Hunger served more than 25 million people across nearly 50 countries in 2020. Dr. Owubah is a passionate humanitarian with extensive experience in program design, monitoring and evaluation of relief and development programs. He brings deep technical expertise and analytical rigor in collaborating with local communities on sustainable water and food security programs, delivering emergency relief, and promoting child survival across a global footprint. Dr. Owubah is deeply committed to achieving Action Against Hunger’s mission to end global hunger and save lives by preventing, detecting, and treating malnutrition. Originally from Ghana, Dr. Owubah earned his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Natural Resource Management and Policy from Purdue University. He was an academic and consultant on food aid management before

spending nearly 20 years at World Vision in roles of increasing responsibility, including as Regional Vice President for East Africa from 2009 to 2014 and Vice President and Partnership Leader from 2014 to 2018. From 2002 to 2007, Dr. Owubah was a member of the Board of Directors of the Pinchot Institute for Conservation, a Washington, DC-based think tank on forest conservation. From 2016 to 2018, he served on the Board of Directors for the Joint Learning Initiative on Faith and Local Communities in Washington, DC. Dr. Owubah was honored with Purdue University’s Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus Award in 2013. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for KickStart International, a non-profit social enterprise with a mission to lift millions of people out of poverty quickly, cost-effectively, and sustainably, and is also a member of the Forbes Nonprofit Council and the Dean’s Global Leadership Council at the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. Dr Owubah is based at Action Against Hunger USA's headquarters in New York City. Our USA office is one of eight organizations that comprises the Action Against Hunger International Network.

ALAIN KOMPAORÉ

CONSUL GENERAL OF BURKINA FASO IN NEW YORK Mr. Alain Kompaoré, Consul General of Burkina Faso in New York, is a career diplomat since April 1, 2003. He is a graduate of Cycle A of the Ecole Nationale d'Administration et de Magistrature (ENAM) of Ouagadougou with a Diplomacy option, and holds a Master's degree in Economics with a major in Business and Organization Management from the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University. The Consul General began his professional career at the Directorate of Studies and Planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2003. In July 2006, he was appointed Second Counselor at the Embassy of Burkina Faso in Accra where he was in charge of the Economic Affairs Department before becoming First Counselor of the Political Department of the Embassy.

Back in Burkina Faso, in 2012 he held the position of Head of Decentralized Cooperation Service at the General Directorate of Bilateral Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In November of the same year, he became Director of Archives and Documentation of the Ministry. On August 1, 2018, he was appointed Consul General of Burkina Faso in New York and was officially installed on September 30, 2018 by Mr. Alpha Barry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Burkinabè Abroad.that comprises the Action Against Hunger International Network.

ELHADJI AMADOU NDAO CONSUL GENERAL OF REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL

His Excellency Mr. Elhadji Amadou Ndao was born and raised in Senegal, West Africa, where he attended primary and secondary school. After graduating high school, he went to the University of Dakar where he, along with other thirty two elite students in the literary track, had the privilege to be of the class that would be the first promotion of the Sociology Department newly opened at the renowned “Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines” at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar. A year into it, he had the opportunity to travel to the United States of America in the pursuit of a higher learning. A higher leaning indeed, for beyond obtaining his B.A. in International Relations at the City College of the City University of New York, he had the pleasure to experience the American culture in its fullest sense: The New York City experience.

After graduating from City College Mr. Ndao served for various NGO’s, Action Against Hunger– USA and The Humanist Center for Cultures, in their communications department before joining the United Nations Secretariat in 2011. At the UN, Mr. Ndao worked in the Department of Management for two years and then joined the Executive Office of the Secretary General, Every Woman Every Child team in the Strategic Planning Unit. His Excellency Mr. Elhadji Amadou Ndao was appointed Consul General of the Republic of Senegal by Executive Order of His Excellency President Macky Sall on January 7th 2015 and took office on January 30th 2015.

JÉRÉMIE ROBERT

CONSUL GENERAL OF FRANCE IN NEW YORK Mr. Jérémie Robert, took office as Consul General in New York on September 3, 2020. Since September 2018, he was advisor for Africa, Development and Global Affairs in the office of the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, JeanYves le Drian. In this capacity, he contributed to the renewal of France’s relations with Africa and the rebuilding of its development policy, and worked on the management of the crisis in the Sahel. He has worked for France’s global priorities, in particular the preservation of global public goods such as global health, climate and biodiversity.

Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme and Adviser on Somalia (2006-2009); in New Delhi (2011-2014) as Coordinator of the Political Chancellery; in Yaoundé (2014-2016) as Number Two of our Embassy in Cameroon and as Assistant Director for West Africa (2016-2018). He worked for the European Union in Kenya (2010-2011).

During his career at the Quai d’Orsay, which he began in 2003, he served in the Africa and Indian Ocean Department, on Sudan (2003-2006) during the Darfur crisis; in Nairobi, as France’s Deputy Permanent

He is married and father of two children.

Jérémie ROBERT is a graduate of the Institut d’Études Politiques de Strasbourg and holds a master’s degree in international relations.

Gala Fundraising is crucial and will go towards: Enrichment At the core of FASNY is our legacy of academic excellence. Gala funding allows teachers to create innovative course offerings that provide every student with opportunities to learn and grow. In addition, we can welcome specialists and guest speakers to enhance the curriculum as well as life skills classes and prevention programs for older students. Athletics and Extracurricular Programs Gala funding helps provide a wide offering of athletic, cultural and after school programs for all levels, allowing students to particiaipate in various activities and help nuture their talents and passions. Programs include inter-scholastic sports to field maintenance, field trips to museums and operas as well as middle and high school clubs are subsidized by your donations. Participation in American Young Voices, Rock Band, the Art Option, school musicals and more are all enhanced by giving. Updated Tech and Professional Development Funding allows every FASNY teacher to engage in meaningful and ongoing training and coaching, helping them enhance the classroom experience for every student. From iPads to Chromebooks to Smartboards and more, your gift keeps tech current from N to 12th. Olivia Tucker Scholarship Fund Financial aid provides access to a FASNY education for families who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Your gift makes it possible for qualified children to participate in our multicultural community and reap the benefits of an exceptional FASNY education. Your donation will go towards the Olivia Tucker Scholarship Fund.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS My name is Lys-Aelia Hart, I graduated in 2004 after spending my entire schooling at FASNY - this was back when FASNY didn't go up to 1ere and Terminale. I currently work in image production organising film and photoshoots at CHANEL. What is Excellence for you? I love this question! I think excellence represents the methodology through which we work and live. It's a sense of perfection not only in the final product but in the process of creating it. It can apply to professional and personal tasks and I believe that all FASNY alumni (teachers and students alike)were taught this way. It's about learning, doing, and repeating until we are content and proud. What do you remember from FASNY that made you who you are now? I think I have to say the people - FASNY is where I made my most long lasting friendships and mentorships. I am still close with my core group of friends from Nursery! We were privileged to have such small classes - this intimacy allowed us to bond with both students and teachers, which shaped us into who we are today. It was tough but rewarding - FASNY taught us the core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, community and I cherish my time there deeply!

My name is Zeki and I attended FASNY between 2004 and 2017. I graduated from Brown University last May and now I work in structured credit at Société Générale. What is excellence for you? For me it means having composure when you’re faced with difficult or complicated situations. Avoiding feeling overwhelmed means you can slow down and be at your best when things don’t go to plan. What do you remember from FASNY that made you who are now? I was always surrounded by bright, ambitious and openminded peers who pushed everybody’s standards higher. The environment still felt supportive and collaborative, and this helped to build our confidence.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS My name is Charlinda Banks and I graduated from FASNY in 2020 (definitely a crazy and unexpected year!). I am currently a sophomore at Brown University where I double concentrate in International and Public Affairs & Literary Arts. Since arriving at Brown, I have had various job opportunities, including working as a Research Assistant on multiple projects with Brown professors as well as a Communications Intern for the Costs of War Project. What is Excellence for you? For me, excellence is continuously working towards your ambitions while not losing sight of yourself and the communities around you. What do you remember from FASNY that made you who you are now? I particularly remember my High School and Middle School English classes, as they gave me the opportunity to express myself from diverse analytical and creative perspectives. Now, my concentrations and career interests are strongly rooted in the creation and impact of narratives in both literary and social sciences/ humanities writing.

Mont Rochelle has had a few owners over the years with of the most notable being Miko Rwayitare. Rwandan born, and educated in the DRC, he is credited with building Africa’s first ever mobile services provider and reportedly the first man to make a cellphone call on the continent. He was also the first black owner of a vineyard in South Africa – Mont Rochelle. The vineyard’s premium wines are named after him – as well as the restaurant. The Miko Range is only produced in exceptional vintages, ensuring that the best wine possible is bottled in his memory.

PIERRE THIAM Pierre Thiam is a celebrated chef, restaurateur, author, entrepreneur, and environmental activist. Born and raised in Senegal, he is known for his innovative cooking style, at once modern and eclectic yet rooted in the rich culinary traditions of West Africa. He is the founder of Yolélé, which distributes African food products around the world, including fonio, a climate-friendly and nutritious ancient grain from the Sahel region of West Africa. His critically acclaimed New York restaurant Teranga, located in Harlem and in Midtown, introduces healthy fast-casual fare directly sourced from farmers in West Africa. Pierre is the author of three cookbooks including his latest, The Fonio Cookbook. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his cooking and advocacy. He is on the board of directors for two global nonprofits, IDEO.org and SOS Sahel, and on the Advisory Board of the Culinary Institute of America.
