BEYOND SUSHI
Silvers Omakase
Lennon Silvers, the first Santa Barbara chef to have earned a Michelin star, turns everything up at his new omakase ("chef's choice") restaurant.
SELF-TAUGHT Chef Silvers taught himself to make sushi growing up in L.A. and now serves exquisite Japanese food in a Funk Zone setting that showcases the work of master artisans from farmers and fishmongers to potters, glassblowers and sake brewers.
DIVINE RICE "Rice is key in Japanese cuisine," says Silvers, and his is the only restaurant in the world outside Toyama, Japan, to serve that city's organic brown rice, which he imports, then mills into white rice each day before cooking it. Says the chef, "Our rice is next level."
THE OMAKASE EXPERIENCE The fourteen-course dinner begins with a few plated courses, perhaps fish with a broth, before multiple sushi courses, then maybe grilled fish and a hand-roll, with a dessert featuring that same Toyama rice.

THE CHEF IS IN Silvers cooks every day—Tuesday through Saturday— the restaurant is open. He employs five people and says, "It's always the same guys. There are no prep cooks, no swing shift, and no night crew. It's us. If we get sick, we close the restaurant."
SUPERB SAKE Looking for excellent sake or wine with dinner? Silvers Omakase has both, including sake, which is so uncommon, the chef says, "We have it brought to us in a suitcase from Japan."

THE URBAN WINE TRAIL THE URBAN WINE TRAIL

SANTA BARBARA is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.
WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962, when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005, the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007, eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to
novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.
THE TRAIL is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito, and laidback Summerland. Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike, or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery.

MEET AMBER LEASE, owner of the Wildflower Women family of boutiques, with locations from Los Olivos up the coast to Paso Robles. Known for their excellent selections and top-tier customer service, her shops, each filled with a covetable selection of clothing, accessories and other unique finds, include several locations that cater to adorable baby/kid-centric clothing and goods. Here, the proprietress shares details about her initial entrepreneurial pursuit, her expanding retail chain, what's in her daily fashion rotation and some of her favorite summer-season pieces for easy, breezy California styling for both women and wee ones.

A selection of luxe goods for body and home makes great gifts.
WILDFLOWERS TAKE ROOT I grew up in retail, working for my family's store, Johnson's for Children. My entire connection to being an entrepreneur, early insights into running a business and, most importantly, learning the importance of connecting with customers were all borne out of working with my parents. In 2009, I opened my first store, Sandbox Kids—a unique children's clothing shopping experience. Within the first year of opening, I expanded into women's fashion. This decision defined my future career and led to the opening of Wildflower Women.
"My team takes pride in offering an old-school boutique experience with new-school knowledge and fashion skills."
CLIENTS + COMMUNITY Each location hosts different community events, charities and a broad range of client-driven fashion requests from true Californians. Residents and tourists from all over the state visit our area, along with guests from around the world—it's simply the best, and after all these years in the business, it keeps me on my toes!
CURRENTLY COVETING I love the ease of throwing on a stylish sneaker with nearly anything—dresses, skirts, jeans or blazers. It makes balancing mom and work life so much easier. We have recently added Veja, Back 70 and Oncept to our shoe lineup. Veja for children is also available in our Sandbox Kids in-stores. Sneakers are a strong fashion category and will remain so for the foreseeable future. And while I love the comfort they afford, I still love to rock a heel or even a stiletto when the occasion calls.
I am excited about denim this season! As a category, it's getting more creative and comfortable, so it's being utilized as the centerpiece of an outfit again. With all the new cuts, styles and even a variety of colors, women are moving away from the workout leggings for the day-today. From barrel to relaxed, straight to wide leg and various versions of bootcuts, there is literally something for everyone. Even the skinny jeans have a place in the permanent wardrobe! Tuck those skinnies into your boots, and if your ankles are showing with your skinnies, rock them with some sneakers.

Shop playful tees, dreamy dresses and fashion finds for all occasions.

Polish a look with woven textures, subtle color pops and a little bling.

MORE SEEDS ARE SOWN The Wildflower and the Sandbox brands occupy six locations spanning the 90-mile tenderloin of the Central Coast. I provide curated collections of high-end denim, quality knits and stylish hats. We feature beloved brands like Moussy, Mother, Paige, Velvet and Amber Star, my own label and years in the making. My team takes pride in offering an old-school boutique experience with new-school knowledge and fashion skills. Customer service and quality boutique retail should not be a dying category. Now more than ever, people need safe places to let their guard down and know they are being looked after in the friendliest yet most professional ways.

Sandbox Kids locations feature an adorable selection of Mommy-and-Me brands.

A GROWING FAMILY The latest addition to Wildflower Family is the stand-alone Sandbox Kids children's store near the Mission, just a few doors down from Wildflower in San Luis Obispo. It is directly across the street from my parents' original Johnson's for Children location, which takes me back to my roots, making it a genuinely full-circle moment. This location features specialty items and will soon have a few mommyand-me brands and new children's fashion and accessory lines exclusive to it.

Proprietress, Amber Lease

Pierced santa barbara Pierced santa barbara
THE PROPRIETRESS OF luxury piercing studio Pierced Santa Barbara, Kamren Morton-Smith, knows a thing or 16 about piercings. As such, she serves up loads of artful inspiration for beautifully curated ears—the primary focus of her burgeoning business. Since opening in the Funk Zone in 2023, it has garnered a loyal following and become the go-to destination for those seeking an elegant, approachable piercing studio specializing in styling.
Pierced Santa Barbara offers a full suite of piercing services in private rooms delivered by a professionally trained team with a wealth of experience. Their needle piercings provide a gentler approach, and their adherence to stringent hygiene standards ensures the process is safe. Equally important, their team is highly skilled in the art of ear styling.
This growing self-expression trend is gaining popularity and inspiring endless new personalized piercing configurations. The studio’s dazzling 14k yellow, rose and white gold body jewelry collections with both precious and manmade gemstones tend to motivate multiple piercings! Studio manager and senior piercer Erin Vogt and professional piercer-in-training, Camille Harris, are available for consultations to help clients plan piercings compatible with their unique anatomy. If a particular piercing is not a good fit, they'll suggest other more suitable options. Here, owner Kamren Morton-Smith talks about the motivation behind her business, the studio's offerings, the fun to be had there and a few reasons to consider getting pierced.

BETTER TOGETHER
A STUDIO IS BORN
I've loved piercings since I was old enough to get them, particularly a beautifully decorated ear. Despite having piercings and tattoos myself, I've never been thrilled with the experience of getting them at traditional tattoo and piercing parlors, and the jewelry selection was always so limited. When this space opened up and my go-to piercer for decades was available, Pierced SB was born!

"Whether you're new to piercings or adding to your collection, we see your ears as the ultimate canvas, working with you to complement existing piercings or to create a fresh new look that truly reflects your individuality."
Kamren Morton-Smith Owner of Pierced Santa Barbara

A PIERCING ABOVE THE REST
Many of our clients enjoy getting pierced together, having a friend or family member there for support during the piercing, and having a second opinion on jewelry that will last forever. Sharing the experience makes it all the more fun! We host private piercing parties where we close the studio for 2 hours, and you can bring up to 6 people, get pierced together and have fun with it!

We offer an approachable, classy, yet edgy place to get pierced, along with most body piercings, but specialize in ear curations with solid 14k gold pieces. To keep things budget-friendly, we also have gorgeous titanium pieces. We have so much beautiful jewelry to choose from, and we provide a piercing experience that is safe, professional and ultimately enjoyable!

WHY GET PIERCED?
*Express your personal style
*For the love of fashion & body art
*Commemorate a milestone
*Indulge in unique jewelry options
*Bond with your besties

hayward's 1890 hayward's 1890

FOUNDED IN 1890, Hayward’s has been a cornerstone of Santa Barbara for well over a century, earning its place as the city’s oldest continuously operated familyowned business. As the fifth generation to run the family furniture business, Guest Editor Hugh Hayward carries on his family’s legacy with an unwavering commitment to quality while embracing the relaxed yet refined style of the Central Coast.
Though initially founded on State Street, Hayward’s has called its downtown showroom on Parker Way home for the past 35 years. While the store has evolved over the years, its focus is now solely on outdoor patio furniture and accessories and helping Santa Barbara residents create inviting, well-designed spaces that seamlessly blend indoor comfort with open air beauty.
Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living is a defining principle of Hayward’s, guided by the idea that outdoor spaces should be just as stylish and comfortable as their indoor counterparts. “When sourcing, I always start with quality and craftsmanship, finding products that are well made and built to last,” says Hugh. “Style is just as important—I look for pieces that fit our relaxed California vibe while incorporating classic elements to anchor any outdoor space.”
Fabulous tablescapes await along with textured pillows and Votivo's OG Red Currant scented candle and more to complete the vibe !

This multigenerational familyowned business brings indoor comforts to outdoor living.

The showroom offers classic pieces like teak Adirondacks, Fermob French bistro and market umbrellas, alongside modern enhancements such as chandeliers and rechargeable Italian lighting. Hayward’s also carries gifts and home accessories, from candles and bar carts to napkins and drinkware. “It’s about offering the whole package,” explains Hugh. “The goal is to create a welcoming environment that draws you outside to enjoy the area’s mild climate and natural beauty. Outdoor living should be effortless, and we believe it can be just as, if not more, comfortable and enjoyable as being indoors.”

ELVN ELVN
ELVN WOMEN'S BOUTIQUE hits the sweet spot when it comes to effortlessly chic style, offering a curated selection of fashion-forward clothing collections, luxurious skincare lines, shoes and accessories. It's the perfect place to elevate your wardrobe with polished looks and fresh finds. Nestled in the ever-evolving and dynamic Funk Zone scape, it's an ideal location for popping in between wine tasting and feasting, to explore seasonal trends, basic wardrobe staples and classic silhouettes.
This au courant shop is smartly curated so that ensembles can be built from the foundation up—comfy bras and seamless bottoms, diaphanous dresses, tailored denim, buttery soft cashmere, sporty sneakers and stylish handbags and hats. Add a distinctive accent with a hand-crafted jewelry piece from space-sharing sister shop Perlina Designs. We recently sat down with Elvn owner Andrea Schwartz, and she generously shared a bit about her background, what inspires her style, her go-to spring/summer signature look and more.

RETAIL REVELATION
I moved to Santa Barbara for college in 2006 and soon started working in women's retail on State Street, which allowed me to gain insight into a field where I always knew I wanted a career. The job that has shaped me the most has been working for CorePower Yoga. Running the retail department for a region of studios for the last seven years has given me extensive experience in buying, selling and merchandising. It also led me to realize that I wanted my own store, and although I wasn't sure how or when it would happen, taking such a big step would need to feel right. Then, in 2023, I was approached by a friend who asked if I would be interested in sharing a space with Perlina Designs, a local jewelry brand, and I knew this was the moment I had been waiting for.

Shop pampering products like organic skin and hair care and finishing touches like sunglasses and scrunchies.

QUALITY NOT QUANTITY
The casual Santa Barbara lifestyle and a solid capsule wardrobe inspire me. I grew up watching What Not To Wear and have always idolized Stacey and Clinton, the show's leads. They taught me from a young age that it's about quality, not quantity. At Elvn, we believe that the pieces you purchase and wear, if done correctly, can influence selfconfidence and so much more in your day-to-day. We curate a store with pieces that make you feel amazing inside and out and are not crazy expensive.

LOCAL LOVE

Switch out sneakers for elegant mules, to take a look from day to night!
A PERFECT FIT
We will treat you respectfully and fit you with clothing that accentuates the person you really are! You will leave feeling comfortable and confident.
I am so honored to have a business in Santa Barbara. This community has been such a huge part of my life and honestly has been one of the main reasons I have stayed here for so long.

CURRENTLY COVETING
I love a feminine lacy or floral dress with cute tennis shoes and an oversized leather jacket—my go-to spring/summer wardrobe.

Need a bikini in January? No problem, as it’s an endless summer here. In addition to year-round swimwear shopping, customers can peruse beach essentials like cover-ups, sunglasses, hats, flip flops, towels, sun skincare and a tight selection of seaside ready-to-wear.
Body positivity is an integral part of the business’s ethos, and the knowledgeable team is well-versed in finding suits that honor all body types. When working with clients, they aim to ensure the swimwear fits the body, not vice versa. Bikini Factory houses the largest selection of swimwear in Santa Barbara County and an impressive size range of bikinis and one-pieces, along with looks ranging from on-trend to classic, tiny string bikinis and Brazilian cuts to more modest coverage—all equally stylish.
We recently met swimwear expert and new owner of Bikini Factory, Susie Marin. Here, she shares a bit about her impressive experience in the world of bathing suits, the latest spring/summer lineup, what makes this boutique exceptional and so much more.
PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND BIKINI FACTORY AND HOW YOU CAME TO OWN IT. I'm a true swimwear enthusiast with over 15 years in the wholesale swimwear business. I've represented some of the most well-known swim brands around the globe and have developed a deep knowledge of fit, sizing and styling over the years.
Bikini Factory has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up, I'd drive past that big, iconic sign off the freeway and tell my parents, "One day, I'm going to own that store." Last October that dream come true!
I spent many years as a rep selling swim collections to Linda Meyer, Bikini Factory's former longtime owner. She approached me upon her retirement, knowing I was a hardworking local girl passionate about swimwear. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to carry on the legacy of such a beloved store. Linda remains a big part of Bikini Factory, joining me at trade shows and working the floor, and she's still available for appointments.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT OWNING A LOCAL BUSINESS? I love connecting with our fantastic community and helping women feel their absolute best— especially when they're wearing the least! Also, generations of women make this store a tradition. Just the other day, a mom who grew up shopping here brought her daughter in for her first bikini—it was a big moment for all of us!
WHAT INSPIRES AND INFORMS HOW YOU CURATE THE SPACE? Trade shows, industry connections and years in the swimwear business help me bring the best styles to Bikini Factory. I love curating a mix of trending and timeless pieces, ensuring we have something for everyone—from girls' size 7 to women's size 16. From fashion-forward swimwear to the perfect classic suit, we've got you covered!

Shine on with Vacation's Shimmer Oil.
WHAT ITEM OR COLLECTION ARE YOU EXCITED TO HAVE IN THE STORE? We're expanding our boutique section with more beachy everyday wear while staying true to our roots! Our customers love La Blanca, Sunsets and favorites like Kulani Kinis and Dippin' Daisys. We're also obsessed with the SPF Shimmer Oil by Vacation.

Enhance and embellish your beach day look with pretty and practical accessories.

“We pride ourselves on offering high-quality swimwear that makes every woman feel confident and comfortable. Not only do we offer custom suits, but we can also alter any current suit in our store to ensure a perfect fit for your body!”
Susie

A TEN OUT OF T in
Fish from a can? Yes, you can!
As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, I’m inclined to stay outdoors as long as possible and in no rush to make dinner. Here’s my secret for an easy, savory meal that requires very little cooking yet bursts with flavor! It mainly just involves the assembly of a few pantry staples and some lovely specialty items from your favorite market. My Italian friend, Sabrina, would be mortified at the thought of pairing fish with cheese. I can hear her voice in my head saying, “Dai, Ayyyyyda, fish with cheese? Per favore—no, no, no!” And my response is, “Yes, yes, yes!” Tinned fish with cheese is to die for. Try it for yourself, and chances are, you’ll become a fan!
Buon appetito!
Trout with Jammy Eggs
Ingredients:
6 eggs
Tin of smoked trout
Small container of pickled onions
A pinch of Aleppo pepper
A pinch of nigella seeds
A pinch of Maldon salt
A drizzle of good-quality olive oil
Directions:
For a perfect soft, jammy egg, in a 3-quart pot, bring 1½ quarts of water to a gentle boil. Gently add 6 room temperature eggs (to achieve room temperature eggs, remove them from the fridge an hour before using them or place them in a bowl of medium-hot tap water for 5-7 minutes). Boil for 7 minutes. Meanwhile, set up an ice bath to cool the eggs after removing them from boiling. Once cooled, gently peel and cut before serving. Top with smoked trout, pickled onions, Aleppo pepper, Maldon salt and nigella seeds. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil.
Anchovy Crostini
Ingredients:
1 fresh baguette
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 ball of fresh burrata
1 preserved lemon, sliced
1 tin of anchovies
Black pepper
Directions:
Slice a baguette into ¾” thick pieces on a sharp diagonal.
Drizzle with olive oil and bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 7 minutes. Top with fresh burrata, preserved lemon, anchovies, and fresh crushed black pepper to taste.

BEST FEST The I Madonnari Street Painting Festival is special to me – I’ve participated as an artist for many years, and my friend Jessie and I have a blast creating paintings of birds and flowers. This event is a fundraiser for the Children’s Creative Project. Come enjoy the

BEACH SUNSETS + A BOATHOUSE
BONUS A long walk at Hendry’s beach is the best, especially at low tide. Every walk is different, whether it’s the wildlife you see or the clouds and reflections in the water. And if there’s time to grab a drink at the Boathouse and watch the sunset, even better!

LIVING FOR LIVE Going out to enjoy live music and dance is the best. SB has great venues, including the Lobero, SOhO, Roy, M. Special, and the SB Bowl. My husband plays in a couple of bands, so there’s always great music happening.

YEARS IN SB: 39
• I’ve been participating as an artist in the annual I Madonnari Street Painting Festival for nearly as long as I’ve lived in Santa Barbara.
• My husband and I started birding during the pandemic and take a lot of photos at various locations in the area almost every weekend.
• I love the SB Farmers’ Market – I go every Saturday and fill my cart to the top!

WINE AND WATCH We love having lunch or a light dinner at the Margerum tasting room, near the waterfront and funk zone. The outdoor patio is a great peoplewatching spot. We’re members of the wine club and enjoy tasting new wines and old favorites.

HANGING WITH FEATHERED FRIENDS
Follow @jlemayart For bird photos and art updates
Rocky Nook Park is a somewhat-hidden gem, and home to so many bird species. We see resident birds like Acorn Woodpeckers in addition to seasonal friends like our beloved Cedar Waxwings in winter, and Hooded Orioles in the summertime.
RESIDENT TOURIST It’s fun to walk along the waterfront and have lunch somewhere on the pier or at the harbor. And make a stop at the Sea Center, too. A perfect “tourist” day includes seeing dolphins leaping out of the water.
