A LOCAL HANG Many visit Tre Lune daily, even twice a day. They return for the familiar ambience, reminiscent of something out of the Godfather; lovingly prepared food from an approachable, wide-ranging menu—and the genuinely warm welcome that never gets old.

THE ‘ YES ” BUSINESS “We like to say yes,” Montesano says. “If a customer wants something that’s not on the menu and we have the ingredients, we’ll make it.”

HOUSE BRANDS The house-label olive oil served with the bread is from Tuscany; the balsamic

vinegar, from Modena. All the wines are from Italy, except the house pinot noir, rosé and pinot grigio, all from Santa Barbara County.

STONE COLD GOOD Save room for another house brand: Black Market Gelato. Flavors include espresso, salted caramel, and vanilla bean; among the sorbets are passion fruit, lemon and strawberry. Don’t forget the heavenly tiramisú.

While researching how to avoid a repeat of the Thomas Fire and the 2018 mudslides, owner Berkeley “Augie” Johnson learned that blue agave makes a good fire break. That got him into tequila and mezcal, and into planting agave. Now, for every case of “Fire Break” house-brand tequila sold, he plants one of the blue beauties to bolster the local firebreak he created.

are involved, including Giovanni “Lucky” Comin, the patriarch of the family, which traces its roots to a small town in the Veneto region of Italy.

THEY KNOW YOUR NAME You know what they say about dining when traveling: “Dine where the locals do.” This restaurant—and especially the bar—is loaded with people who know each other and the staff.

A GENEROUS BAR Cocktails, wine (from Italy and California) and beer are reasonably

priced. Drinks are, as the website says, “stiff.” The $13 La Mozza Sangiovese from Tuscany is as food friendly as it gets. And now they’re open for lunch from 11:30-2.

A FEAST OF TRADITIONS The menu is filled with favorites, such as bruschetta and bresaola for appetizers, pastas ranging from linguine with clams to spaghetti aglio e olio to the “homemade” selections that incorporate house-made noodles in lasagna, ravioli with prime rib in a pink cream sauce, and tagliatelle with mushrooms in a cream sauce, and entrées like veal scallopini and seafood soup.

END GAME What’s the most famous Italian dessert? Tiramisú, of course, and their version is gooey good, just as it should be. There are also plenty of after-dinner drinks, grappas, Cognacs and rare Scotches available as accompaniments.

WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962 when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005 the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007 eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone—from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to novices simply looking for a day of fun —the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.

Is there anything you take, or do, religiously every day?

AP: Exercise is an essential part of my day and supports healthier skin, and I never skip wearing sunblock.

Round trip from Santa Barbara

I am a Santa Barbara native who traveled extensively using photography to capture the beauty of the places I encountered. After years of roaming, I settled in Milan, Italy, in the '90s, where I met my beautiful wife, Talissa. Combining our passions for art and photography, we opened up what was originally a high-end darkroom and print shop for the local fashion market. With the advent of digital photography, it evolved into a "lightroom" with fine art giclée printing on cotton papers and canvas and eventually the first conservation frame shop in Italy.

After 25 years in Milan, my wife and I felt it was time to move back "home" to Santa Barbara with our four kids. We purchased Santa Barbara Art & Frame Co in early 2021, bringing our years of fine art design and conservation framing experience to the area. Our latest exciting endeavor is assuming Elizabeth Gordon Gallery's operations as managing partners/owners alongside longtime proprietor Heidi Ferguson.

Engaging, interactive and expanding

Since taking the reigns last fall, our main priority continues to be our commitment to engaging the local community through events and exhibitions and making the gallery for everyone. We've also expanded our online presence, making it more interactive by highlighting videos of the artists. Our social accounts provide a portal for sharing behind-thescenes glimpses of the creative process and giving the audience a personal connection to the artists.

Curated in color with a side of passion

Being a small, intimate gallery, we rotate the art frequently and use light to enhance the beauty of each piece. The artwork creates an uplifting ambiance; we are just there to share the artists' stories and layer on an emotional connection. The space, filled with pops of color, exhibits many different mediums, from magazine cutout collages mixed with spray paint to works that use more natural materials. We love working with artists who live and breathe art and are passionate about sharing their stories.

We recently welcomed multidisciplinary Californian artist Greg Miller into the gallery. His work examines the momentary beauty in the fleeting parts of American culture, and his head-turning pieces fit well with our other artists America Martin, Sherri & Gino Belassen, David Matthew King, Stanley Boydston, Rafael Gaete and Dan Lencioni, among others. Apart from our continuing commitment to discovering new local artists, we'll go international this year, creating an exciting worldwide experience.

MEET YOUR INNER MAKER

Take a pass at it When we first opened, we imagined that crafters of all sorts would flock to us, get a membership and use our space as an extension of their craft room. Many members do this, and we found our store perfect for people who want to dip their toes in the crafting pool. Our classes are great for people who want to sample various crafts. That is why we created our Class Pass membership. This 30-day membership gives the member access to all our classes at no additional cost. The only exception is if we have our community instructors teaching the course, then they get 50% off. No matter how much time you're spending in Santa Barbara, you can take advantage of all that we offer here with singleday, week, month or annual membership options.

Party on We are so excited to have expanded our private event capabilities. We love hosting corporate team bonding events, baby showers, bachelorette parties, kids' parties and more! We can be a one-stop party shop, handling food and drinks, decor and activities for folks too.

Make mine a one-of-a-kind One of our favorite things to do is to customize items for guests.

We have all the fun toys, like a laser etcher/engraver, a commercial embroidery machine, and computerized die cutters, to name a few.

We can customize pillows, bags, shirts, hats and more. We also do commissions and have helped folks create unique pieces—everything from baby announcement pillows to custom-etched glassware for conferences. One of my favorite collaborations was with a local mother who had a memory quilt made from her daughter's high school t-shirts, which was given as a graduation present.

Individual instruction We offer private lessons for anyone who needs more guided instruction on any craft we offer. Any class on our calendar can be booked as a private lesson. From our introductions to sewing, macrame, knitting and crochet to our ocean resin or floral arrangement classes, we can offer a unique experience catered to your schedule.

Mobile makers We are working with a variety of different hotels, senior centers and local businesses to bring The Crafter's Library to the community by offering onsite classes.

A strong foundation I am most excited about the 501(c)3 non-profit we established, called The Crafter's Library Foundation. All donations to the Foundation help its mission to increase access to arts and crafts education. Through it, we hope to offer scholarships for classes.

Santa Barbara's proximity to the Santa Ynez Mountain Range provides some great hiking options. The most popular trails are found in the front country, and Inspiration Point, via Jesusita Trail is at the top of our list. At around 2.5 miles round trip, this hike is doable for most hikers and rewards with stunning views of the city and Pacific Ocean. Directions: Take Tunnel Road all the way to the end, where the trail begins on a paved fire road.

At the end of the paved road, head straight up the dirt path.

Make a CHEESE BOARD with your favorite soft cheeses rolled in edible flower petals. Garnish with crudité, olives and some fancy crackers for a little botanical bliss.

Vibrant & Verdant Crostini Toppers

GOAT CHEESE & LABNEH WITH IKURA ROE 2 small cloves of garlic Juice of one lemon ½ of a preserved lemon, seeded ½ teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt ½ cup soft goat cheese Pulse the ingredients in a food processor. Fold in ½ cup of labneh or thick Greek yogurt. Spoon the mixture onto the crostini, top with ikura roe and garnish with petite petals.

SPRING PEA & RICOTTA SALATA 16 oz. thawed frozen peas Zest and juice of one lemon 1/3 cup fresh mint leaves, stemmed and roughly chopped 1 cup baby spinach leaves 1 cup fresh basil ½ teaspoon truffle salt ½ cup ricotta salata or grated pecorino Pulse the ingredients in a food processor while drizzling in ½ cup olive oil. Top the crostini with the puree and shaved shards of ricotta salata and garnish with some petite edible flowers. *For the crostini, cut a baguette into ½" slices and drizzle with olive oil.

Toast in the oven on a sheet tray at 400 degrees for 5-7 minutes until toasted and crisp.

Cultivated Cocktails

LAVENDER EMPRESS GIN & TONIC 1 oz. Empress gin ½ oz. lime juice Tonic water Fill the glass with ice and ingredients and garnish with lavender.

MEZCAL PETAL PALOMA 1 oz. mescal ½ oz. Campari 2 oz. grapefruit juice Top with grapefruit soda.

Rim the glass with your favorite salt, fill it with ingredients and ice and garnish with flower petals.

Great, great outdoors ideas

It's easy to break a sweat outside when the reward is a spectacular sunset or a sparkling ocean water view. I enjoy hiking the trails in Montecito, cruising the path by the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge, strolling along Shoreline Park and walking around the Santa Barbara Harbor or Stearns Wharf.

There’s always more to do and see in S.B., even for local blogger Betsy O’Brien. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Betsy still knows how to play “tourist” in her hometown. Just add water

It’s always a treat to get on the water (especially on a hot day). Book a sunset sail with Santa Barbara Sailing Center and appreciate the stunning coastline and mountains from a different perspective. For a bird’s-eye view of downtown, visit the gorgeous Santa Barbara County Courthouse and take the elevator to the clock tower for postcardworthy photos. If possible, try to catch a show at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Go early and take the extra steps to the top—I promise the workout is worth it!

Soak up the sun

We’re lucky to have such temperate weather here. After living in different parts of the country, I can assure you I don’t miss scraping my windshield or shoveling my sidewalk. I never take the blue skies and 70-degree winter days for granted. We really do live in paradise!
