SANTA BARBARA is where the mountains meet the ocean, and a world-class, no-car-required wine tasting experience is just a few steps in almost any direction. Given Santa Barbara’s proximity to the Santa Ynez Valley and the Santa Maria Valley, two of the best wine regions in the US, it’s no wonder that a variety of wineries and tasting rooms now populate hot downtown spots, the perennially poppin’ Funk Zone, and other bustling nearby neighborhoods. And thanks to the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail, navigating the wealth of options has never been easier.
WINE TASTING in Santa Barbara dates back to 1962, when Santa Barbara Winery first opened its doors in a warehouse near the city’s oceanfront. In 2005, the Trail began to organically develop around this forerunner, and by 2007, eight of the original downtown wineries joined forces to officially create the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. The goal was to offer everyone from oenophiles on serious tasting missions to
novices simply looking for a day of fun the opportunity to learn about and taste the wide range of varietals and styles crafted from the county’s best vineyards.
THE TRAIL is populated with dozens of wineries and tasting rooms sprinkled throughout several districts, each with a distinct personality and vibe: the iconic Funk Zone, the historic Presidio Neighborhood, the Haley Corridor, and to the north in the “Goodland” of Goleta, and to the south in upscale Montecito and laid-back Summerland. Explore the Trail on foot, hop on a shuttle, cruise it by bike or catch a ride-share. Along the way, be sure to stop and sample the eclectic assortment of restaurants, breweries, cocktail joints, art galleries, coffee bars, retail shops and even a distillery.

ACE RIVINGTON
Home to Central Coast denim brand Ace
Meet Patti Pagliei and John Simpson, the founders and visionaries behind The Shopkeepers, one of the most intriguing retail experiences in the Santa Barbara area.
This dynamic husband-and-wife duo is also the co-creators of DreamWeaver, a fair-trade collection of hand-sewn bags, as well as the family-operated, handmade jewelry brand Waxing Poetic. Recently, they took a rare break from their travels, Doublewide Kings gigs (the legendary local rock band that Simpson fronts) and other personal and professional projects to meet with us at their newly opened second location in Carpinteria. We got the scoop on The Shopkeepers' origins and how they maintain its "wow factor," their new bag line, how they stay grounded and more.
FUNK ZONE FIND
The Shopkeepers started when we found this amazing space in the Funk Zone that was way too big for just our jewelry brand, Waxing Poetic. We thought, "What if we fill it with other fresh brands we love and make it a love letter to California culture and community?"
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
The Shopkeepers has to impress you on entry. It can't feel like a typical store—we want people to walk into an experience. From our eclectic vintage fixtures to the art on the walls, everything invites you to slow down, take a breath and start seeing with fresh eyes. We wanted to give people a chance to stop and go "wow"—discover a well-designed jacket, a statement hat, a great book or jewelry that feels made just for you.
REALIZING DREAMWEAVER
We had this 15-year-old bag from a Bolivian market that survived everything we threw at it. After years of friends asking, "Where did you get that bag?" we figured it was time to share these virtually indestructible, sustainable, fair trade bags with everyone.
CARP IS WHERE THE HOME IS Carpinteria has been home to our Waxing Poetic headquarters for years, and since we live here, it felt natural to open a second location here. And of course, there's something so special about this little coastal town—it's got that perfect mix of surf culture and smalltown charm that really speaks to us.
HOW THEY BALANCE WORK & PLAY
Well, it ain't easy, that's for sure! But we have a lot of amazing friends and family here in town who help us turn the dial from work to play and that allimportant sense of connection. We stay sane with beach walks, good friends, making music and remembering that despite all the daily challenges, we get to delight people and create beautiful experiences for a living.
The Shopkeepers lives up to Curious Goods for Curious People. Shop from a wide range of offerings, including head-to-toe dressing and accessorizing for women, body care, cool band tee shirts, home decor items, vintage concert posters, local art and other fabulous finds.
DreamWeaver bags really are a dream come true! They're super lightweight, but capable of some heavy-duty hauling. They come in a variety of sizes—from totes for big farmers market buys to petite pouches to keep track of important essentials, plus they boast a lifetime warranty.

“All of the design elements are created by me, drawing on over 50 years of experience in the clothing design business.”
Civilianaire owner Gene Montesano has worn many hats throughout his notable career—entrepreneur, designer, manufacturer and restaurateur, among others. The feathers in his career cap include founding Lucky Brand Jeans and Civilianaire with his long time friend, Barry Perlman, Lucky’s Steakhouse, Tre Lune Ristorante, acquiring and breathing new life into beloved Santa Barbara dining fixtures D’Angelo Bakery and Joe’s Cafe and collaborating with business partner Leslee Russell to establish Montesano Market & Deli. And his unwavering devotion to denim, design and manufacturing lives on in the form of Civilianaire, founded in 2009.
This slightly under-the-radar boutique, with its “Buy Less, Choose Well” ethos, is filled with low-key, cool clothing in classic silhouettes that favors quality over quantity and longevity over fast fashion trends. Shop premium goods—all domestically produced—including Japanese denim (if you know, you know), heavy cotton flannel shirts, graphic tees, want-all-the-colorways-available henleys and more for men. Women can indulge in aughts-adjacent velour sweatsuit sets updated for the 2020s, covetable denim styles, twill pants and jackets and linen looks galore. Cassy Anne, a collection of Balinese artisan-made floral-printed dresses and sets designed by Gene's wife Erika adds a distinctive flirty, floral touch to the more utilitarian lineup.
We recently popped into the shop for a quick coffee and conversation with Gene. Here’s what he shared about the genesis of Civilianaire, his go-to wardrobe pieces, his passion for problem-solving and more.
LIFESTYLE CHOICE
In December of 2009, when I left Lucky Brand Jeans, I decided to start a new clothing company. It was intended for clothing the not-so-common man or woman. The premise was to make classic stuff for the person who wasn’t a follower of fashion, but for someone with a sense of style who was comfortable in their own skin, hence the name Civilianaire. The meaning of Civilianaire is a person who has kept a keen eye out and developed a liking for a tasty lifestyle.
IN HEAVY ROTATION
I mostly wear our 100% cotton military-inspired pants, a pocket tee, one of our short or long-sleeve Henleys, our 100% cotton poplin double-flap pocket or single-pocket shirts, a 6.5oz denim pearl snap western shirt or one of our many jackets, depending on the season.
Gene Montesano Owner of Civilianaire
Luckily for denim aficionados, Montesano's passion for durable, rugged cotton Indigo twill has not waned since his Lucky Brand days. He continues to source premium 100% cotton Japanese denim fabric, which is crafted in small batches in Southern California to create a covetable high-quality denim collection for Civilianaire.
Civilianaire continues to feed my creative spirit. I still have plenty of enthusiasm and thrive on creativity. I love making product and doing restaurants, and it still excites me every day. I guess I love the intensity of it all and dealing with the ever-present problems that go along with these businesses, and in the end, solving them.
THE FRUITS OF LABOR
Civilianaire is all a labor of love. If it were just for the money, I would have bought Apple 25 years ago when I started Lucky Brand Jeans or Lucky’s Steakhouse and the rest of my endeavors.

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara's vibrant Arts District, Canvas is a sophisticated yet approachable women's clothing boutique. It welcomes shoppers with a friendly vibe and a mix of merchandise that embodies the area's stylish and laid-back essence. Owner, Karen Johnson's all-white modern interior provides a perfect foil for the assortment of bright and bold goods, allowing the colors and textures to pop, while also highlighting the details, quality and nuances of the more muted merchandise.
Karen's extensive retail experience is deftly demonstrated in her ability to curate Canvas with a perfect balance of California cool clothing and accessories. Shoe lovers will swoon over the impressive footwear selection that ranges from trendy trainers to loafers with a twist and tasteful heels. Karen has mastered the art of buying for Santa Barbara's temperate climate with sweaters, skirts and basics that can be seamlessly woven into a year-round wardrobe. Additionally, Canvas has a tight edit of home decor goods, including the artisan Spanish fragrance line Cereria Molla that has become the shop's de facto signature fragrance.
We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Karen to learn more about her thriving boutique. Read on to learn more about her background, discover what inspires her buys and what makes Canvas special.
Please tell us a little about yourself and the origin story of Canvas.
Canvas is my fifth retail store. I started my career in Mill Valley, where I grew up, with a boutique called Accents that I owned and operated for a decade. I moved to Belvedere in 2000, where I raised my family and owned a series of three home, fashion, fine jewelry and shoe stores called Citrus and Madison for two decades. I graduated from UCSB in 1988 and have been yearning to come back to this special place since I left. Both of my daughters chose UCSB for their education, which ignited my sojourn back to Santa Barbara in July of 2024.
What inspires and informs your approach to curating the boutique?
I curate and edit Canvas purely by instinct and inspiration. I have traveled extensively and connected with many European fashion houses. Sourcing from countries that share the same climate has been quite resourceful. Bringing Mediterranean color, texture and style to Santa Barbara is just absolutely organic. I also love to support California brands that I have done business with for many years. Creating a mix is what creates style today. Each person can blend things that make the look uniquely personal to their lifestyle.
What sets Canvas apart from other retailers in Downtown Santa Barbara?
Santa Barbara has such a unique, outdoorsy, artistic culture. We have some exceptional independent retailers. Canvas adds a colorful palette of style not duplicated in other stores. Sweaters, sneakers, shoes, linens, satins and belts create a lovely daily or dressy outfit for a festive event.
What is your go-to look for fall 2025?
I am loving metallics, textures and monotone looks that include great accessories.
What would you like potential customers to know about your business?
Shopping in-person connects people with the community, the culture and the textiles that are unique to Canvas and Santa Barbara. The creation that evolves with all these unique pieces cannot be duplicated by tapping your keyboard. In October, Canvas will celebrate a year of doing business in the Arts District on State Street. It’s been a colorful year of meeting new people through our unique pieces that spark something in each of our clients. The best affirmation is when a client who discovers Canvas introduces the store to their dearest friends, family and visitors, continuing that connection through a special piece, outfit or memory created in Canvas.
Canvas dresses women from head to toe with a thoughtfully curated mix of wardrobe-building separates and accessories sourced from around the world.
"Something magical happens when a client discovers a look that inspires her or when she finds that perfect piece that has been missing in her wardrobe or lifestyle."
Owner, Karen Johnson

Meet Guest Editor Jeanna Delgado, the founder and designer of Perlina Designs. Her tasteful boutique stands out with its elegantly curated, sustainable, ocean-inspired jewelry and its covetable selection of home decor goods. The Funk Zone-located showroom shares space with the clothing and accessories store Elvn, which complements Perlina's offerings perfectly, as both strike an easy-going yet refined balance.
Perlina, which means "bead" in Italian, is a playful nod to both the designer's heritage and freshwater pearls, a mainstay material in her pieces. The collection's design aesthetic is characterized by Jeanna's distinctive take on emerging trends, resulting in timeless jewelry that still feels relevant. The majority of the jewelry offerings are handcrafted by the designer, using high-quality, ethically sourced materials. Perlina offers both demi-fine (gold fill) and fine jewelry (solid gold) options, catering to a wide range of preferences and creating price points that range from very approachable to well worth the investment. Brides-tobe will be pleased to know they can collaborate with Perlina to create and customize a bespoke wedding jewelry look.
The boutique's home decor selection emphasizes artistry and craftsmanship, deftly complementing the brand's overall vibe and vision. Shop elegant goods, including hand-blown glass pitchers, stoneware dinnerware, onyx bookends, au courant tastemaker cookbooks and other swoon-worthy items.
Here, Jeanna shares the styles she wears on repeat, her favorite gift-worthy goods, a few bespoke bridal creations and more.

While jewelry is the core of Perlina, I also have a home decor collection—tabletop linens, travertine napkin rings, cookbooks, onyx trays for jewelry and other enticing items . It's nice for customers to be able to pop in to pick up a quick birthday, hostess or holiday gift.
Perlina was born from my love of nature's gems, especially pearls. Living by the coast has only deepened that connection, and I love creating pieces that reflect that natural beauty.
"I feel so lucky to be in the Funk Zone surrounded by fellow creatives and small businesses. It's inspiring to be part of a community where everyone supports and uplifts one another."

Seimandi & Leprieur is a newly opened gallery in the heart of Downtown Santa Barbara’s lively art, shopping and theater district. Founded by French couple Fanny Seimandi and Julien Leprieur, the gallery is a reflection of their deep, long-standing passion for contemporary art.
After spending a decade living in Martinique, immersed in its rich creative scene, the couple relocated to Santa Barbara with their young family, driven by a desire to share the work of artists they had come to admire and collect. What emerged is a thoughtfully curated gallery and exhibition space—one that extends their personal story, artistic values and enduring relationships with the artists they represent.
With its minimalist design aesthetic, the gallery offers an immersive, distraction-free setting for viewers to fully engage with the work. The exhibition program includes both solo and group shows, spotlighting recognized artists with established careers—many of whom have long-standing ties to the founders and are represented in major institutional collections in Europe and the United States.
We recently sat down with Fanny and Julien to hear more about their journey, their inspirations and the vision behind Seimandi & Leprieur.
How do you approach shaping the space and exhibitions, and what draws you to an artist’s work?
When we renovated the historic Bluebird Café, a legendary music venue, we preserved its soul while creating a space that honors the highest standards of contemporary art. We curate with care, selecting artists whose work we have followed for years, works that embody presence, precision and lasting impact. If it moves us deeply and holds power, it’s a “yes.”
What brought you from Martinique to Santa Barbara, and how has that influenced your journey?
Having loved American culture since our adolescence, we were drawn to Santa Barbara’s luminous beauty, creative energy and spirit of openness. We’ve always loved traveling, and we wanted to share this passion with our children while building a bridge between cultures. The fresh morning air here was a surprising but refreshing change from the Caribbean!
Are there any up-and-coming artists and exhibitions that have you especially excited right now?
We’re excited to open our next group show in early October, centered on tropical imagination, featuring artists including Dora Vital, Karine Taïlame and Pierre Roy-Camille. Pierre’s haunting paintings evoke sunken cities, ghostly architecture and lush landscapes. His deliberately ambiguous work blends painting, print and drawing, creating a subtle sense of wonder. He has also designed window displays for Hermès in Shanghai.
What’s next for the gallery—any dreams or new directions ahead
Santa Barbara deserves more than safe, decorative art. Many collectors travel to L.A., San Francisco or even Miami to find contemporary work that’s truly ambitious and beautiful. We want to change that. Starting in 2026, we will host an annual exhibition dedicated to emerging local talent, part of our long-term vision to make this gallery a destination for serious, inspiring art.
“We believe contemporary art still has the power to move, challenge and uplift when it rejects shortcuts and embraces beauty, depth and rigor. Our gallery champions artists who work with vision and intensity and offers them a space where their work, rich in depth and presence, can resonate fully.”

For over 15 years, Out of the Box Theatre Company has brought bold, contemporary musicals to Santa Barbara. Since its founding, the nonprofit community theatre organization has united some of the region’s most talented performers, musicians and designers to showcase edgy, lesser-known and uniquely memorable productions for local audiences.
“After studying musical theatre in New York City, I was inspired to bring the kind of contemporary productions I fell in love with back home to Santa Barbara,” says founder and artistic director Samantha Eve. “Since starting Out of the Box Theatre Company, I’ve had the opportunity to help create and share diverse stories about the human experience with the Santa Barbara community. It’s incredibly rewarding.”
Out of the Box debuted in 2010 with Reefer Madness: The Musical and has since grown into a vital part of the local arts scene, producing two full-scale shows each season at downtown Santa Barbara’s Center Stage Theater. Throughout its history, Out of the Box has remained a nonprofit organization, powered by donations and driven by community support—both on and off the stage. “We prioritize working with local actors and musicians whenever we can,” adds Eve. “The goal is to celebrate community theatre as a vibrant, enriching part of our cultural landscape while creating more opportunities for local talent to shine.”
For its 15th anniversary season, Out of the Box is proud to present Jagged Little Pill this November— an original story of pain, healing, and empowerment, set to the music of Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard. In the spring, the season continues with Assassins, the Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, which explores the lives and motivations of nine individuals who attempted (or succeeded) to assassinate a U.S. President.
To further celebrate its anniversary, Out of the Box is presenting a special Songbook Series at The Blue Owl in Santa Barbara. These intimate, one-night-only cabaret performances will showcase standout local performers and songs from favorite contemporary musicals.

Made for a Lifetime
First Street Leather, with stores in the storybook village of Solvang and the wine-forward town of Los Olivos, is a premier destination for exquisite leather goods, meticulously handcrafted by artisans from around the world. The thoughtfully curated and well-organized boutiques are flush with buttery soft jackets, luxurious handbags, stylish shoes, belts, wallets, hats and distinctive accessories—a perfect blend of timeless, classic and sometimes unexpected. Established in 1972 by Philip and Cassandra Grant, First Street Leather has grown from a modest leather workshop into the thriving business it is today. Over the past five decades, the couple has proudly brought together some of the most sought-after brands alongside artisan-made collections, many of which are imported exclusively for First Street Leather. Some treasures, like Koru knitwear from New Zealand, were serendipitously discovered during their travels abroad.
Equally valued as the products themselves is the boutique’s hallmark customer service. With General Manager Travis leading the team for more than 25 years, customers—whether long-time locals or first-time visitors—can expect genuine expertise, warm hospitality and easygoing guidance towards something they’ll treasure for a lifetime.
We recently made the short and scenic drive over the pass to Solvang to visit with the owners, and Philip shared a bit about First Street Leather's origin story, how it had changed over the last five decades and what is currently trending in the store.
What is the origin story of First Street Leather?
In the early 1970s, I got a job as a shoe repairman and custom sandal maker in Isla Vista, working for Leather Limited, across from the Magic Lantern. I foremost learned the craft of leatherworking, not small business administration. When the owners of Leather Limited expanded by opening a store on First Street in Solvang, Cassandra and I moved to Santa Ynez to manage that store. We purchased the business in 1972 and renamed it First Street Leather. It was a tiny, 300+ sq feet, on First Street, in a room of what had previously been a 1940s motor court on First Street. We grew little by little, and eventually relocated to our current location in 1992.
How has the business evolved since its founding, over 50 years ago?
The business has changed over the past 50+ years. We originally mainly sold our own handmade leather items, belts, hair clips and tooled leather purses— it was the early ’70s after all! I had a workbench in the store, handcrafting the products. In the 1990s, we began to import handbags and a small selection of shoes directly from Italy. We took the staff with us to Italy for the first time in 1999, and in 2008, opened another location in Los Olivos.
What inspires and informs your approach to curating the boutique?
Cassandra and I are inspired by sophisticated design, expert craftsmanship and functionality, which typically translates to a beautiful product. We love to travel and spend several months each year traveling to source new products. We discovered our stunning collection of merino, silk and furblended KORU sweaters while traveling in New Zealand. We were also invited by the Argentine consulate to come to Buenos Aires to meet several leather production companies there. We've formed lifelong friendships with many of the vendors met in our travels. Last spring, we were excited to bring our staff to Italy again to meet the vendors and to share our love of Italy with them.
What would you like potential customers to know about your business?
As well as the superior quality and uniqueness of the products we bring into the shops, customer service is, above all else, the most important aspect of our business. We have a friendly, well-trained (and well-travelled!) staff that enjoys what they do, and they are always excited to share their information with our customers.

The more the merrier! This recipie uses brown beech, baby shiitake, king aragi, tree oyster and lion's mane mushrooms.
This cozy pasta dish, perfect for a chilly fall evening, stars a melange of wild mushrooms. A slightly spicy umami sauce adds an earthy, rich depth of flavor, unlocking the culinary potential of the mushrooms in a way that makes each bite extra satisfying. It comes together quickly and always wows hungry family and friends. Enjoy!
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
3.5 ounces each of a variety of mushrooms (e.g., brown beech, baby shiitake, king aragi, tree oyster, lion’s mane — or any mushroom medley)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 clove garlic, minced
1. Prepare the Mushrooms
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 shallot, finely minced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon white miso
1 tablespoon mushroom powder (optional, for umami depth)
½ teaspoon chili flakes (adjust to taste)
½ cup dry white wine (for deglazing)
8-ounce container of mascarpone cheese
12 oz pappardelle (or pasta of choice)
Salted water for boiling
Reserve ½ cup of pasta water after cooking
½ cup hazelnuts, toasted and skins removed, lightly crushed
Flat-leaf parsley, or sage, chopped
Heat a very large nonstick skillet (ideally 16 inches) over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Clean mushrooms by gently wiping with a damp paper towel. Do not rinse to avoid waterlogging. Keep small mushrooms whole; tear or slice larger ones. Add the mushrooms to the skillet and sauté until they are browned and tender, about 7–10 minutes. Stir in 1 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 teaspoon thyme, and 1 minced garlic clove. Cook for another minute. Transfer mushrooms to a bowl and set aside.
2. Make the Sauce
In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Sauté shallot and garlic until fragrant and softened, about 2–3 minutes. Stir in tomato paste, white miso, mushroom powder and chili flakes. Cook for 1–2 minutes. Deglaze the pan with ½ cup dry white wine, scraping up any browned bits that remain. Lower the heat and melt in the mascarpone cheese until the sauce is creamy and smooth.
3. Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, and season with salt. Cook pappardelle according to package instructions until al dente (typically 10–12 minutes). Reserve up to ½ cup of pasta water before draining.
4. Finish the Dish
Return the drained pasta to the pot or a large serving bowl. Toss with the mushroom mixture and mascarpone sauce. If the sauce is too thick, stir in the reserved pasta water a bit at a time to loosen it.
5. Toast the Hazelnuts
Toast hazelnuts in a toaster oven or dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant (about 5–7 minutes). Remove as much of the skin as possible by rubbing with a clean kitchen towel. Lightly crush.
6. Serve
Plate the pasta and top with toasted hazelnuts and chopped flat-leaf parsley. Optional toppings: a scoop of creamy burrata or some shaved Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.

AS THE FIRST BOTANIC GARDEN in the country dedicated to native plants, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has remained true to its founding principle — to conserve native plants and habitats for the wellbeing of people and our planet. From its humble yet visionary beginnings to collaborations with world-class scientists and architects, and through cycles of destruction and renewal after wildfire, the Garden’s journey has always reflected resilience, innovation and purpose. That journey continues in 2026 as the Garden celebrates its Centennial with a yearlong calendar of special events and community activations.
The festivities begin January 31 with the Conservation Symposium,
where acclaimed ecologist and author Doug Tallamy will be honored with the John C. Pritzlaff Conservation Award. March brings the Garden’s birthday weekend and beloved Beer Garden event, featuring local food, brews and a new archival photo installation tying past to present. April will spotlight Native Plant Month with a reimagined Spring Planting Weekend, guided Home Garden tours throughout Santa Barbara County and horticulture classes for gardeners of all levels. Additional highlights include rotating art exhibits in the Garden Gallery and, on October 10, a large-scale community celebration at Elings Park with live music, food and drinks — ensuring the Centennial year is one to remember.
