enealogy research turns up some intriguing relations; for example, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are 10th cousins, and Britney Spears and Prince Albert of Monaco are 17th half-cousins. In the Bible, Jesus is linked to Rahab and Ruth, members of nations that were enemies of Israel. Searches for family connections quickly reveal not only roots but also a web. Only a few generations up in the branches of each family tree are so many people that trees intersect. Scientists speculate that most people living today are related through a recent common ancestor. So there’s a “web-like tapestry” rather than a “tree that fans out exponentially,” according to writer Carl Zimmer. Realizing we’re all connected should affect how we treat others. After all, we’re related to people with diverse backgrounds and opinions. In terms of genealogy, as well as living as Jesus’ disciples, we belong to one another.

ongratulations Second Baptist! We are now one hundred and eighteen years old! In past years our historians, Mother Lois Gaston and Tinisha McDonald, have spoken about SBC’s history, our founders, our pastors and their wives. They shared facts about the exact locations of the sanctuary and showed pictures of all of our buildings. They have even highlighted our future
leaders, the Kings and Queens of Children’s Church. This Founders Day we will highlight families who have three or more generations serving in ministry together, at Second Baptist Church. We salute our Second Baptist Church’s 3 GEN Family members. Mother Lois Gaston, our historian since 1990, has been a member of Second Baptist since 1949. At one time, five (5) generations of her family served here in ministry together. She believes we can measure God’s favor by looking closely and honoring SBC families – those who CURRENTLY and those who FORMERLY served in ministry together at the same time. Original records show that since founded 118 years ago, Second Baptist has had only 15 pastors. Our first pastor, Lt. Col. Allen Allensworth, a slave who became a Baptist minister and Buffalo Soldier, was elevated to the rank of chaplain in the United States Army. He was the highest ranking American African in the military back in the 1800s. Rev. George Godfrey Bailey, born in Bastrop, Louisiana and educated in Arkansas, is credited with establishing our fiscal soundness and “caring for community” reputation. He shaped our legacy and pastored from 1943 until he retired due to illness in 1974 when Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard took over. Bishop Dillard’s dynamic tenure lasted for 45 of this church’s most productive years. Since February, 2019 we have been blessed to have Pastor Christopher A. Bourne as our leader. From 19021904 when our 14 founders organized us, until now, 118 years later, God has shown Second Baptist favor.

God’s favor is much more prevalent if you take a close look of our SBC people. Many have sacrificed to keep this church, its ministries, buildings and outreach growing. None more than the sixteen 3GEN families who are actively serving in ministry here today. We are grateful to God for His favor; for sending an anointed, Bible teaching preacher, we love and call Pastor Chris, to lead us. Now that Bishop Dillard and his 3 generational 1 st family has moved on, the Lord has blessed Second Baptist with another 3 GEN family- the Bournes. When Pastor Chris was a small child, his parents moved to California Avenue, almost directly across the street from Second Baptist’s then pastor, Rev. G. G. Bailey. It seems, 50 years ago God planned for Christopher A Bourne Sr. to sit in our pulpit. We thank God for our SBC family, as well as all of our founders, pastors and worshippers. Thank you for your COMMINTMENT, your INVESTMENT, your ENCOURAGEMENT and your INVOLVEMENT. We are one body. Everyone is important! Special thanks to our Founders Day Team, Newt Oliver, Diakona Nadine Harris, Founder/Publisher of Second’s Gazette and Diakona LaVonne Husband. The 116 Clique (pronounced one-one-six click) is an American Southern Christian hip hop collective from Dallas, Texas signed to Reach Records. It consists primarily of Reach Records artists, but also contains artists from other labels.[1] The 116 Clique is named after the Bible verse Romans 1:16:[2] "For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile."[3] For them it means acknowledging the power of the Gospel and the divine calling to proclaim it in every area of their life. "We can lay our lives down to serve and glorify God in everything we do." Man Up was intended for release on July 23, 2011. [4] However, the official release date was pushed back to September 27, 2011. A corresponding film, directed by former member Sho Baraka, was made to show the importance of a godly man. The Man Up Movie & Concert Series tour took place in selected cities where fans could see a screening of Man Up followed by a concert with songs from the soundtrack.[5]

This sacred monogram originally appeared as “IHC,” the first three letters of “IHCOYC,” the Greek word for Jesus. Over time the Greek “C” was replaced by the Latin “S” to become “IHS.” There are many interpretations given to the letters “IHS,” including the Latin “Iesus Hominum Salvator” (Jesus, Savior of Men) and the English “I (Christ) Have Suffered.”

ravel writer Rick Steves, who’s a Christian, believes travel can help us see God. He writes of gaining new insights into prayer from a so-called “whirling dervish” (a sort of Muslim monk) in Turkey. Before demonstrating how he prays, the man explained to Steves: “When we pray, we keep one foot in our community, anchored in our home. The other foot steps around and around, acknowledging the beautiful variety of God’s creation … touching all corners of this great world. I raise one hand up to acknowledge the love of God, and the other hand goes down like the spout of a teapot. As I spin around, my hand above receives the love from our Creator, and my hand below showers it onto all of his creation.” Most of us probably won’t add whirling to our prayer practices! And we likely already pray for people near and far. But what if we pictured ourselves both anchored at home and stepping out among God’s whole creation? What if we imagined God’s love pouring into us, then out of us onto all the world? How might such an approach to prayer influence how we live?

ounded in 1884 by Christopher James Perry, Sr., the Philadelphia Tribune is oldest and largest African American newspaper, published 5 days a week, serving the African-American community. Throughout its history, The Philadelphia Tribune has been committed to the social, political, and economic advancement of African Americans in the Greater Philadelphia region.
During a time when African Americans struggled for equality, the Tribune acted as the “Voice of the Black Community” for Philadelphia. Historian V. P. Franklin said that the Tribune was (and is) an important AfroAmerican cultural institution that embodied the predominant cultural values of upper, middle, and lowerclass Black Philadelphians. When the Tribune began publications in 1884, it was a one page paper weekly edition, publishing from a small building located at 725 Sansom Street. Despite the early challenges faced by Black owned businesses in the early 19th Century, the Tribune had tremendous success due to its focus on the African American community. By 1887, the Tribune was publishing 3,225 copies a week. In 1891, Mr. Perry received national recognition for the Tribune when Garland Penn, a prominent advocate for African American journalism, praised the newspaper in his book “The Afro-American Press and Its Editors” for its true portrayal of African American people and the culture. By the 1900s, the Tribune had become the leading voice of Black Philadelphia. W. E. B. DuBois called it “The Chief News-Sheet” in the city. The Philadelphia Tribune is still going strong, with a weekly distribution of about 625,000. The Tribune has received the John B. Russwurn award as the “Best Newspaper” in the country seven times since 1995. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Tribune for the longevity.

Love All the Time! ast month I wrote about February being the “month of love,” but the truth is every month, every day should be about love in all aspects mentioned. Just as every day is a day to celebrate “Black History!”
I want to highlight a few Black History events, which have taken place since the first 19 Africans landed in Virginia in 1619. Charles Young, born in 1864, was the first Black Colonel in the United States Army. Senator Hiram Revels became the first African American to make a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate in 1870. Five African American pilots earned their wings after graduating from Tuskegee Flying School in 1942, and the list goes on and on! Matthew, Chapter Six, tells us about doing good for the Lord and not for man. It teaches us how to pray, and tells us not to worry. At the end of the Chapter, in verses 33-34, state, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” As we see, in America today, no matter how much good has been done, trouble continues to be a part of our society. Therefore, we must continue to do good, be steadfast and unmovable, the Lord is watching, and we must give an account to Him. Until we meet again, Peggy LaBon

Well, this would be correct, but with a different theme, God’s love! Faith, played by Dancing with the Stars dancer, Peta Murgatroyd; and Jimmy Hope, played by Robert Krantz meet by a chance encounter at a dance studio. The rest is a directed by God who navigates all circumstances and situations, which will be seen by end of the movie. Great movie! You can watch it on Netflix.

Kidney Awareness! arch is National Kidney Awareness Month, a time to bring awareness to kidney disease. The kidneys are the body’s chemical factory, filtering waste and performing vital functions that control things like red blood cells production and blood pressure. But over time, the kidneys can become damaged with little or no physical symptoms to warn you that your kidneys are in
trouble.
If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney failure or heart disease, you are at greater risk for kidney disease. The sooner you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can get treatment. By getting treatment early, you may be able to prevent or delay more serious health problems. Chronic kidney disease is a serious condition that affects more than 30 million adults in the United States, yet people in the early stages may not have symptoms. Many people don’t find out they have kidney disease until their kidneys are permanently damaged, which is why one should get tested early. Everyone can do 5 simple things to protect their kidneys: Get Tested! Ask your doctor for an ACR urine test or a GFR blood test annually if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, over age 60, or have a family history of kidney failure. Get a free screening through the National Kidney Foundation’s KEEP Healthy program by visiting www.kidney.org/ KEEPHealthy. Reduce NSAIDs. Over the counter pain medicines, such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), may alleviate your aches and pains, but they can harm the kidneys, especially if you already have kidney disease. Reduce the regular use of NSAIDs and never go over the recommended dosage. Cut the Processed Foods. Processed foods can be significant sources of sodium, nitrates and phosphates, and have been linked to cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Try adopting the DASH diet to guide your healthy eating habits. Exercise Regularly. Your kidneys like it when you exercise. Regular exercise will keep your bones, muscles, blood vessels, heart and kidneys healthy. Getting active for at least 30 minutes a day can also help control blood pressure and lower blood sugar, which is vital to kidney health. Control Blood Pressure and Diabetes. High blood pressure and diabetes are the leading causes of kidney disease and kidney failure. Managing high blood pressure and strict control of blood sugar levels can slow the progression of kidney disease. Speak with your doctor if you are having trouble managing diabetes, or high blood pressure. Throughout National Kidney Month, the National Kidney Foundation is offering free kidney health screenings through the KEEP Healthy program.
