Safety Warnings This device must only be used for its intended purpose as described in this manual. Stability Each caster on the M1 has a combined roll-and-swivel lock operated by a foot pedal. Before engaging the locks, turn all casters so they point outward from the frame. This gives the chair its widest footprint and its greatest resistance to tipping. If the optional Large Wheel Package is installed, two casters are replaced by large wheels with wheel brakes. Engage both wheel brakes and lock the remaining casters whenever the chair is stationary. 1. Do not lean forward while seated. Doing so may cause the chair to tip forward. 2. Do not lean out over either side of the chair. 3. Do not reach down to pick objects up off the floor. Use a reaching aid or ask an attendant for help. 4. Do not travel up or down any ramp without an attendant controlling the chair throughout. 5. Do not park or position the chair across a side slope.

3

WARNING Caster locks and wheel brakes are designed only to secure the chair while stationary. Never use them to slow or stop a moving chair.

Ramps and Inclines Before regular use, test the chair on every ramp or sloped surface it may encounter, including the entrance of a roll-in shower. First, test the surface with an attendant and no user seated in the chair. Then repeat the test with the user seated and an attendant ready to assist. Whenever possible, have a qualified healthcare professional participate in the assessment. Maximum incline: Do not push or pull the M1 on an incline steeper than 1:12 (approximately 5°). Propulsion When equipped with 4 casters, the M1 must be propelled only by an attendant. The seated user must not attempt to self-propel, and the chair must not be propelled by any other method. Water Immersion The M1 is designed for use in wet areas such as showers. It is not a pool chair and must never be submerged, in whole or in part, in water or any other liquid. Submersion will damage the chair’s components. 4

Transfers Transferring onto or off of the M1 presents a significant risk of falls or injury. Before using the chair, establish and practice a safe, repeatable transfer method with an attendant present and ready to stabilize the chair. If transfers cannot be performed safely and consistently, consult a qualified healthcare professional familiar with transfer techniques and equipment. Anyone who has not been trained to perform tranfers safely must always be assisted and may require a mechanical patient lift. Transferring onto the M1 6. Always lock all four casters before a transfer, with all casters pointing outward from the frame. If the Large Wheel Package is fitted, engage both wheel brakes and lock the remaining casters. 7. Never transfer on a slippery surface. Transfer on a clean, dry, non-slip floor. Smooth hard floors may allow even locked casters to slide. Loose mats and rugs can slide and are a hazard. 8. Never stand on any part of the M1 frame. 9. Never use the foot supports to bear weight during a transfer; Doing so may cause the chair to tip. Rotate the foot supports out of the way or remove them entirely before transferring.

The M1 is not intended for use as a transport device. The M1 is not intended to be used as a long term seating system.

IMPORTANT WHEN USING THE METAPAL M1 WITHOUT AN ATTENDANT PRESENT, ALWAYS KEEP A RELIABLE MEANS OF CALLING FOR ASSISTANCE WITHIN REACH

IMPORTANT NEVER LIFT OR CARRY THE METAPAL M1 BY ITS ARM SUPPORTS OR FOOT SUPPORTS.

5

IMPORTANT ALWAYS CONFIRM THE SEAT IS FULLY INSTALLED AND SECURED BEFORE A USER TRANSFERS ONTO THE CHAIR. Secure the seat by fully tightening all four screw knobs on the underside of the seat.

Intended Use The MetaPal M1 is intended: 10. As an aid for showering, toileting, and related personal care and hygiene activities; 11. To support the user’s body in a seated position; 12. For use with or without a caregiver’s assistance; 13. For toileting positioned over a standard toilet, or as a commode using the commode pan; 14. For indoor use only; 15. In both institutional and home environments. The M1 performs no therapeutic or diagnostic function and is not intended for any therapeutic or diagnostic purpose. The M1 is intended for individuals with mobility impairments who cannot stand safely or who have difficulty standing or maintaining balance during showering, toileting, or personal hygiene. Users may also have limited endurance or postural control and may require caregiver assistance.

IMPORTANT CAUTION - RISK OF SKIN BURNS. Chair surfaces may become hot when exposed to hot water, direct sunlight, or other heat sources. Before seating the user, check all contact surfaces and allow the chair to cool if necessary. Do not leave the chair in direct sunlight before use. 6

2.2 PU Solid Back Support (Optional) 2.2.1 Height Adjustment (Optional) Tool required: 4mm Allen key (included with the chair). 25. The optional solid back support is pre-installed on the vertical back tubes. Orange plastic strips help hold it in position while the four mounting screws are loosened for height adjustment. 26. Using the included 4mm Allen key, loosen the four mounting screws just enough to allow the back support to move. 27. Apply light inward pressure to both mounting brackets at the orange plastic strips on the vertical back tubes. While maintaining this pressure, slide the mounting brackets up or down to the desired height. Ensure both sides are positioned evenly, and the back support is level. 28. Tighten all four mounting screws evenly until the back support is secure and any play is eliminated. Do not over-tighten.

Note: The orange plastic strips hold the back support in position only during adjustment. All four mounting screws must be securely tightened before using the chair.

2.2.2 Angle Adjustment (Optional) Tool required: 4mm Allen key (included with the chair). 29. Using the included 4 mm Allen key, remove the two mounting screws from each side of the solid back support—four screws total. 30. Slide the solid back support off the mounting brackets. 31. Adjust both mounting brackets to the desired angle. Confirm that the left and right brackets are set to the same position. 32. Slide the solid back support back onto the mounting brackets. 33. Reinstall all four mounting screws and tighten them evenly until the back support is secure and all play is eliminated. Do not overtighten. . 2.2.3 Depth Adjustment (Optional) Tool required: 4mm Allen key (included with the chair). 34. Each mounting link provides approximately 2 in. (50.8 mm) of fore-and-aft adjustment. Multiple links may be installed to provide additional depth adjustment. 35. Using the included 4 mm Allen key, remove the screws securing the solid back support to the mounting brackets. Slide the back support off the brackets. 36. Add, remove, or reposition the mounting links to achieve the desired depth and angle. Confirm that the left and right sides use the same number of links and are set to the same position. Reinstall and securely tighten all link and bracket hardware.. 37. Slide the solid back support back onto the mounting brackets and reinstall all mounting screws. Tighten the screws evenly until the back support is secure and all play is eliminated. Do not overtighten. 10

IMPORTANT ALL MOUNTING HARDWARE MUST BE SECURELY TIGHTENED BEFORE THE CHAIR IS USED.

Note: Depending on the selected back support angle, access to both mounting screw locations on each side may be limited. In this configuration, one mounting screw per side is sufficient, and the unused screw on each side may be removed. At least one mounting screw on each side must be securely installed and tightened before the chair is used.

2.2.4 Adjustable-Tension Back Upholstery The M1’s standard adjustable-tension back support includes five independently adjustable straps. Each strap can be tightened or loosened to contour the back support to the user and provide support where needed. For additional comfort, an optional foam insert may be added. For easier installation, remove the back support from the chair before inserting the foam. Unzip the opening at the bottom of the back support, place the foam insert inside, and fully close the zipper before reinstalling the back support and using the chair.

2.3 Caster Installation

Each caster is secured to the base frame by a Plunge Puller. No tools are required. 38. Pull the Plunge Puller straight out and hold it in the released position. 39. Insert the caster stem into the housing. Once the stem is inserted far enough, release the Plunge Puller and continue pushing the caster stem inward until the Plunge Puller fully engages with the hole. 40. Confirm that the Plunge Puller is fully engaged by pulling downward on the caster. The caster must remain securely attached and must not come out of the housing. 41. Repeat Steps 38–40 for the remaining three casters.

2.4 Big Wheel Package The MetaPal M1 is available in two configurations: 42. M1-AP (Attendant-Propelled): Four 5-inch casters. 43. M1-SP (Self-Propelled): Two 5 in. casters, two large self-propulsion wheels, and a set of wheel brakes. Self-propulsion wheels are available in 20 in., 22 in., and 24 in. sizes. The standard configuration includes 22 in. molded MetaPal wheels. The large wheels may be installed at the front or rear of the chair, depending on the user’s needs and configuration. The M1 frame includes three axle-mounting holes to accommodate the different wheel sizes. The standard 22 in. wheels are installed in the center axle-mounting holes. Tool required for brake installation: 4mm Allen key (included with the chair). 44. Determine whether the self-propulsion wheels will be mounted at the front or rear of the chair. 45. Install the two 5 in. casters at the opposite end of the frame. When the self-propulsion wheels are mounted at the rear, install the casters at the front. When the self-propulsion wheels are mounted at the front, install the casters at the rear. 12

46. Remove the rubber plug from the appropriate axle-mounting hole on each side of the frame. For 22-inch wheels, use the center holes. 47. Position the supplied plastic spacer between each wheel and the frame. The spacer prevents the rotating wheel from rubbing against or scratching the frame. 48. Press and hold the button on the quick-release axle pin. Insert the axle through the wheel and spacer and fully into the mounting hole. Release the button, then pull outward on the wheel to confirm that the axle is locked and the wheel cannot detach. Repeat on the opposite side. 49. Install and adjust the hand-brake assemblies. Confirm that each brake securely holds its wheel when engaged. 50. Install the optional anti-tip wheels only when the self-propelled wheels are mounted at the rear. Anti-tip wheels are not compatible with the front-wheel configuration. 51. Confirm that both quick-release axles are fully engaged and all brake fasteners are securely tightened. With the brakes released, verify that both wheels rotate freely. With the brakes en gaged, verify that both wheels are held securely.

2.5 Arm Height and Pad Adjustment Arm Support Height Adjustment Tool required: 4mm Allen key (included with the chair). 52. Using the included 4mm Allen key, loosen the two mounting screws on the arm support just enough to allow the mounting bracket to move. 53. Apply light inward pressure to the mounting bracket at the orange plastic strip. While maintaining this pressure, slide the arm support up or down to the desired height. 54. Tighten both mounting screws evenly until the arm support is secure and all movement or play has been eliminated. Do not over-tighten. 55. Repeat Steps 52–54 for the opposite arm support.

Note: The orange plastic strips hold the arm supports in position only while they are being adjusted. All mounting screws must be securely tightened before using the chair.

14

Arm-Support Pad Adjustment Each arm-support pad can be moved forward or backward and rotated to provide the desired arm support or reduce the chair’s overall width. 56. Loosen the adjustment screw on the arm-support pad just enough to allow the pad to move. 57. Slide the pad forward or backward to the desired position. 58. Rotate the pad to the desired orientation. For narrow doorways or confined spaces, rotate the pads to reduce the chair’s overall width. When additional space is available, rotate the pads to provide greater forearm support. The gently curved shape can be positioned to cradle the arm like an arm trough. 59. Tighten the adjustment screw until the pad is secure. Do not over-tighten. 60. Repeat these steps for the opposite arm-support pad.

Arm pad adjust forward and backward

IMPORTANT Confirm that both arm-support pads are securely tightened before using the chair.

15

Swing-Away and Removable Arm Supports Each arm support can swing outward to provide additional access or can be completely removed when needed. An optional Plunge Puller may be installed to lock the arm support in position. If equipped, disengage the Plunge Puller before moving or removing the arm support. After returning the arm support to its operating position, confirm that the Plunge Puller is fully engaged before using the chair.

2.6 Foot Support Installation and Adjustment The foot supports can be rotated inward or outward, or removed entirely, to provide better clearance during transfers. To install the foot supports: Insert the hanger tubes into the receivers on the frame. Rotate each foot support forward until the pin engages with the groove in the receiver and the foot support locks securely into position. To adjust the footplate height: 61. Pull and rotate the Plunge Puller to hold it in the released position. 62. Slide the inner foot support tube up or down to the desired height. 63. Align the nearest adjustment hole, then rotate and release the Plunge Puller. Confirm that the Plunge Puller is fully engaged and the inner tube is securely locked. 64. Repeat Steps 61–63 for the opposite foot support. To rotate the foot supports: Lift the hanger tubes slightly to disengage the pins from the receiver grooves, then rotate the foot supports inward or outward. To remove the foot supports: Lift the foot supports completely out of the receivers.

IMPORTANT NEVER STAND ON OR PLACE BODY WEIGHT ON THE FOOT SUPPORTS. ROTATE THE FOOT SUPPORTS OUT OF THE WAY OR REMOVE THEM BEFORE TRANSFERRING ONTO OR OFF THE CHAIR. 16

2.7 Fasteners Install and tighten all fasteners by hand using the included 4mm Allen key. Never use power tools, as excessive speed or torque can cause stainless-steel fasteners to seize or gall permanently. At least once a year, inspect the chair to confirm that all fasteners are tight, all Plunge Pullers engage fully, and all adjustable components are securely locked in position. 17

3.0 Use and Operation 3.1 Casters The M1-AP is equipped with four 5-inch casters as standard. Each caster has a dual-locking brake that prevents both rolling and swiveling. 65. To lock: Press the orange pedal firmly downward until it engages. 66. To release: Lift the orange pedal upward. Always ensure the casters are locked before the user transfers into or out of the chair.

3.2 Commode Pan The commode pan is designed to fit directly beneath the seat aperture. Its smooth surface facilitates cleaning, while the handle and pouring spout allow for controlled carrying and emptying. A slightly raised area in the center of the pan is intentional and is designed to reduce splashing when the pan contains urine or fecal matter. To remove the pan: Slide the pan toward the rear of the chair. A slight, steady pull may be required to move the pan past the locking springs. To reinstall the pan: Guide the pan into the mounting brackets and slide it forward until it reaches the stops. Slight resistance may be felt as the locking springs engage. The springs help secure the pan and prevent it from sliding out if the chair encounters a small bump or uneven surface.

IMPORTANT ALWAYS CONFIRM THAT THE PAN IS FULLY SEATED AND SECURELY RETAINED BEFORE USE. The commode lid has a hook on its underside. When the lid is removed, hang it from the slot at the end of the pan handle to keep it clean and out of the way. Optional Lowered Commode Pan Kit An optional kit is available to position the commode pan lower beneath the seat. This provides additional access for users who independently perform perineal hygiene or bowel-care routines while allowing the commode pan to remain in place. 18
