Welcome to issue 5 of the SAZ MEDIA zine. In this issue we focus on light, shadow and texture, with each photo being taken by young people from Offerton Community Centre, Stockport. Over the past few months we have supported these young people to experiment with various methods of photography, exploring different themes and seeing from different perspectives. Themes explored include portraiture, street photography, light painting, and still life, and we even travelled to Lyme Park to be inspired by nature. This is the result. We hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as we enjoyed making them.

LYME PARK This photo was taken in Lyme Park, Cheshire, and is actually full colour; the stark contrast between the sky and the trees creates a gloomy black and white effect that fools the eyes. This photo gives the onlooker a feeling of dizziness, caused by the warping and blurring around the edges from little rain droplets that had just started to fall from the sky.
LIGHT play In the workshops exploring light and shadow, the response and engagement we had from participants was superb; the young people wanted to just get started picking up a camera, exploring the functions and their surroundings.
They were animated and enthusiastic, and created some excellent work featured here. In some it was something brand new and sparked a lifelong interested in media and photography that might not have been otherwise discovered.
A long shutter speed, low ISO and small aperture combined with coloured lights helped create these beautifully chaotic dances of colour.
Using a projector, the young people experimented with blocking light to form shadows, and learned how that reflects into photos and imagery.
