"You can dream, create, design, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it requires people to make the dream a reality"

Spotlight

BY KARL BINDER & IAN CAPELL

What can I say, the world seems like it's going for shit right now. This 18 month and counting pandemic we are living through has been nothing less than eye-opening. The “unprecedented times” saying is really starting to get on my nerves. Is there an end in sight? Or just a new shift on how we view society and human rights. The ugly bipartisan culture this pandemic has created makes me sad. Sad for my family, my kids, who have suffered the most. What kind of a world are they going to inherit from us? I’m not talking politics, climate or economics (even though these are all in major crisis right now). I’m referring to us. Collectively - the fractiousness of society has brought out the worst in us and it’s going to affect the future of the next generation. I’m not sure what it’s going to look like, but I don’t like where its going. Hopefully we can find some kind of common ground as a species and move forward in a positive way. I know I am going to do what I can to be more compassionate, positive and respectful in all the things I do, because those are the qualities I WALT DISNEY want my kids to emulate. I feel I have tried to take this approach throughout my life and so far there have been many positive results. Saywell is one of them. I am happy to be a part of this team. I am happy to see the same traits; compassion and respect from everyone whether in the field or in the office. We constantly receive good reviews from the work we do and in a time where all this negativity surrounds us, I am happy to be part of something so positive. Your actions are evident and are responsible for our continued success. We have over $125M worth of contracts lined up spanning over the next 4 years in both the public and private sectors. So whatever happens in the near future, be it negative or positive, we are in a great position to weather the storm or ride the wave. -Karl Binder As we say farewell to summer and welcome the cooler air and changing colours of autumn, I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the positive changes I have observed over the past year or so in my full-time role as company Safety Officer. I feel honoured to have been chosen to take on this challenging role, and the co-operation and support I receive from all of you, my colleagues, has made every step worthwhile as I continue to grow into this position. I can honestly say that this is one of the best companies I have worked for. From top to bottom, people respect each other and genuinely care for each other. This mutual bond has helped us grow in our safety culture because we look out for each other. We teach each other. We support each other. Safety Culture is more than just a catch phrase. It is an attitude, a state of mindset, and a belief system that shapes the way we live and work. It influences how we do things in a way that becomes more and more natural, and the benefits are becoming more and more evident. Just look at the numbers! In 2019 we had 4 lost-time injury claims for that year. In 2020, we were down to just 2 lost-time injury claims. Heck, in 2017, there were 9 lost-time claims! How many do we have this year? Zilch. Zero. None. Not a single person had to go to the hospital this year due to a workplace injury. The numbers don’t lie. Quantitatively, we are working safer now than we have in the past. Qualitatively, I am seeing good things out there. I see that we are growing in the right direction as we develop in our safety culture. I am proud of all of you for working smarter, working safer, and for looking out for one another. Let’s continue this path and finish out the year by saying that we did amazing construction work, and that nobody had to go to the hospital!- Ian Capell

Tofino Dl114 N is an affordable housing project in partnership with BC Housing, CMHC, and Catalyst Developments. Saywell has been working on preconstruction for this project for the past 3 years and we are happy to announce that after this long process of municipal approvals, provincial and federal funding commitments we are now looking forward to an October 2021 mobilization. This project consists of 34 units targeting active families and seniors. Before we begin construction, we will need about 3 months to clear the land and rock blast the mountain to build the road to access the property. There are some complexities involved with this one, including the 10m deep foundation anchors for the TDS system and geofoam due to seismic requirements, but we are up for the challenge!
