"It is not the beauty of the building you should look at: it's the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time." DAVID ALLEN COE

Spotlight

BY KARL BINDER

I can’t believe 3 months has already blown by. That’s about how long it takes to install an inground pool by yourself (with tons of help from a much younger but not better looking brother haha). Before we know it, Christmas will be here and 2022 will be just around the corner. Time flies, which is all the more reason to look back and see what we’ve accomplished in these past 3 months. Lets look at the projects that we have been awarded recently: 1. 2230 Cliffe Ave, a new 6,000 SF base building holding 4 separate CRU’s complete with a Popeye’s Chicken slated to begin sometime in July. 2. 574 Cumberland, a mixed use 4-story commercial & residential building with 31 total units serviced by underground parking set to begin the first week of July. 3. 929 Hecate, a new 5,000 SF daycare and residence creating additional capacity for the Nanaimo Innovation Academy. 4. Quadra Gardens is a full Building Envelope Remediation including interior millwork and common space upgrades starting in July. 5. Tofino DL114 was tendered and is currently undergoing value engineering and cost savings for final approval. With the recent approval of the South Building, that brings this total project up to 74 units with a project budget of $15M. We are set to begin construction in September.

There is no shortage of work! In fact, if you know of any capable hands, we are hiring in most if not all positions. With some of the restrictions recently lifted, we are going to start up our monthly Superintendent meetings again. Keep an eye out for the email, but the current plan is the morning of July 9th. Looking forward to starting these round table discussions again and seeing everyone in the same room! One of the biggest reasons I got into construction 18 years ago, was because of the variety. Every day I went to site, I was challenged by something new or had to push myself to learn something new. Construction provides that because every day changes. You build upon what you already built upon and hopefully what you built was done right. That’s one of the reasons I am so happy to be part of this company. We have been building for years and growing organically to become the company we are today. I believe that what we have built both in the office and the field, was done right. We have a great group of people that work together as a team. With our strengths, we are able to overcome almost any adversary we encounter. With our weaknesses, we are able to identify, learn and then implement ways to build it again but this time right. We have such a variety of work and such a great variety of people. From single family residential to tenant improvements, interior & exterior renovations, commercial, industrial, and multi-story multifamily we really are faced with so many different aspects of construction and every day presents a new challenge. Its our variety of our team that allows us to accomplish this. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but collectively we are Saywell Contracting. We are excited to continue in this way as it keeps us on our toes and in my opinion makes us better builders!

Fresh Projects Ricky's CR Team Members Project Manager: Shannon Kelly Superintendent: Max Skaaravik Project Start: October 2020 Project Completion: May 2021 Value: $327,000 Location: Campbell River Project Type: Renovation Saywell Contracting was approached by the Owner of the Ricky’s Franchise to undertake a complete interior and exterior renovation on their restaurant in Campbell River. As the General Contractor we worked with Interics Design and Embe Engineering Consultants to complete the interior and exterior transformation. The renovation consisted of adding an entirely new restaurant within the existing building allowing the owners to operate a Ricky’s Family Restaurant as well as a Fatburger Restaurant independent of each other. The Ricky’s Lounge has now been updated to showcase a modern style and the Fatburger has a beautifully exposed ceiling that allows for a wide-open seating area. The building is located in downtown Campbell River and with the new landscaping and impressive new façade the building now has a modern feel and will add character to the downtown core for years to come.

Bayside Restaurant

Team Members Project Manager: Karl Binder Superintendent: David Binder Project Start: January 2021 Project Completion: May 2021 Value: $162,000 Location: Parksville, BC Project Type: Renovation A restaurant of approximately 5,000 SF, shut down due to Covid restrictions, the Owner approached us to renovate while shut down. With this being our fourth renovation at the hotel, the Owner was quite happy to let us design & develop the entire renovation without any architects or additional consultants. BP drawings & interior design drawings were completed in house and a BP was received within 3 days of submitting. This helped with the overall duration of 10 weeks.

Ladysmith Shelter

Team Members Project Manager: Bonnie Hunter Project Coordinator: Louise Turch Superintendent: Dale Ennis Project Start: March 2021 Project Completion: April 2021 Value: $236,000 Location: Ladysmith, Project Type: Renovation

Dale and co turned this former bar into a 10 bed emergency shelter for BC Housing/Ladysmith Resource Centre. There were some challenges to be had (and lots of vermin skeletons etc)

but the crew pulled it off in just over 5 weeks – including a new office space, 2 new showers, new flooring, replacing ceiling tile and installing a bunch of new doors complete with security system. The users are incredibly happy with the space.
