MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: DOUG SHIPLETT Doug Shiplett only knew one way to deal with chronic back pain caused by herniated discs.

He stopped moving. ?The more it hurt,? Shiplett said, ?the less I did.?

Shiplett, a true YMCA healthy living success story, didn?t factor in how the sedentary lifestyle would impact the rest of his life. ?I ended up sitting for a couple of years,? he said. ?My legs got weak. Whenever I went up any type of steps, my thighs just screamed at me. In December, I tried to go up nothing but two steps. My left leg screamed out at me, and down on my face I went.?

Shiplett opted for surgery for the back.

He got a YMCA membership with hopes to getting some strength back in his legs. ?When the surgeon cut me loose, I knew I had to do something,? he said. ?I couldn?t keep falling. I needed to come to the gym.?

It had 20 years since Shiplett had been in a gym, so when the front desk staff person signed Shiplett up for a membership, she informed him about a free equipment orientation. And that?s how he hooked up with Wellness Center attendant Russell Heinrich. ?He went over a lot of the machines and told me which ones to use and which ones not to use,? Shiplett said.

Shiplett signed up in August. By October, he had

started to notice some positive changes in normal diabetes testing. ?All of tests were back in range for the first time since 2012,? Shiplett said. ?And this (coming to the YMCA) is the only thing I?ve changed.?

Once worried about going up two stairs, Shiplett now does the new step machine four times a week in 45- minute intervals. ?I?ve gotten a lot of that strength back,? Shiplett said. ?It doesn?t hurt when I walk anymore, and I?ve managed to lose 10 pounds. I?ve cut my insulin by a third.

Something is working.?

Heinrich checks on Shiplett at least once a week just to touch base and monitor his progress. He loves the good reports. ?He?s been very faithful,? Heinrich said, ?and it has paid off.?

At the last great news report, Heinrich insisted Shiplett share the news with healthy living coordinator Krystal Clark. ?We?re seeing people succeed in living a healthy lifestyle,? Clark said. ?It?s about the nutrition, but it?s also about what you do in here. He sees the benefit of coming in here, and his health is showing it. That makes me happy. I love seeing that.?

MISSION REPORT UPDATES ON OUR EFFORTS TO IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. CHANGES IN RED

DAY CAMP Ashley Cole & Nicole Kozikowski This is a program we have run for a long time and brought it back in the 1990s and it has been a staple of ours ever since. With the help of Staunton City Schools and other locations, we host over 270 children each week. They take field trips, play sports, create art projects and make new friends all in the care of our Youth Development Counselors.

In 2019, we purchased 3 used school buses to take the students on field trips and to the pool at Gypsy Hill Park. This year, we purchased a new camp software package that will allow us to better care for this program and communicate better with our campers and their parents.

We will start taking registrations for summer camp on March 2. This program is funded by our Annual Campaign and a grant from CAPSAW. We have several direct sponsorship opportunities available for this program.

AFTER SCHOOL ADVENTURE CLUB Ashley Cole & Nicole Kozikowski Another of our long- time mission programs, we operate our After School Adventure Club as a site licensed by the Department of Social Services. We are licensed for more than 60 children, but currently limit enrollment to 40 children due to our use of the space.

Some of these children are on our financial assistance or are reimbursed by DSS or CAPSAW through TANF funds.

All Staunton Elementary Schools send buses to our program. This program is currently full with 40 students enrolled.

Recently, counselors LJ and Maggie have started working with the older children in this program to provide a more active experience. There are several opprtunities for direct sponsorship of this program.

STAFF CHAPLAINS Dave Boger & Allen Jones We are fortunate to be served by two staff chaplains, Dave Boger and Allen Jones. They serve the Y through the Skyline Chapter of the Industrial and Commercial Ministries. The SAYMCA started this program in 2010.

BIBLE STUDY Dave Boger & Allen Jones Chaplains Dave and Allen lead our Monday morning Bible Study group at 9:00 a.m. each week. The group has met at the Y for years and they currently have more than18 people show up for the weekly meetings. They have added a Prayer Group led by Kristin Kahn at 8:30 a.m. on Monday mornings before the Bible Study.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE Eddie Sant iago & Chris Lassit er Another of our long- standing youth development programs, the Youth Basketball League introduces more than 230 students to the game of basketball and involves the efforts of more than 25 volunteers. This program just finished in February and the finals of the Middle School divisions were hosted at the Y. Lots of people to thank for supporting this program including. Check them out and some photos from finals weekend on page 17.

SATURDAY NIGHT MADNESS Now: MIDDLE SCHOOL MAYHEM Eddie Sant iago & Chris Lassit er On the second Saturday of each month, 15 minutes after we close, we open our doors to Middle School students to enjoy the gym, pool and teen center for 2.5 hours while our teen staff take over the Y. In January, this program saw more than 100 students attend the program. This is the largest number we have hosted in years.

NEUROWELLNESS Lee Baker and Wendy Shut t y NeuroWellness is the brainchild of SAYMCA member and Physical Therapist Lee Baker who wanted to bring a program to the community that could help people recover from strokes. Working with Rhonda Shinaberry, Wendy Shutty and the Personal Training staff, Lee launched the program in fall 2014. Since that time, the program has evolved into NeuroWellness, helping people work out in our Wellness Room two days a week to recover from a host of neurological issues. We are fortunate to have many interns from the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University help with this program.

Y NOT SING SINGERS Carol Byrd Spearheaded by Carol Byrd, our outreach singing group visits senior centers, retirement homes and assisted living facilities throughout the area. Putting their spin on some classic songs, this group is never a drag. Above, Alice Killian and Carol Byrd sing and pay tribute to the upcoming baseball season.

This group is always looking for fun, friendly people to lend their voices to the effort. If you are interested in joining in on the fun and you have Thursday evenings free, please contact Carol Byrd for more information.

ADULT RESPITE CARE Rhonda Shinaberry and Laura Hit chin In response to the increasing number of members needing to give up their memberships to take care of loved ones needing full- time care at home, the Y created a three- day a- week respite care program. For five hours a day, people can leave loved ones in the care of our trained staff. We serve lunch and exercise with them in the Wellness Room and the pool. This program takes place in the Teen Center.

We are currently working to figure out how the closure of the Daily Living Center will impact this community and if we need to make adjustments to our program.

This program has direct sponsorship opportunities.

VETERANS COFFEE George Schmock, Meade St ewart & Nelson Twyman Veterans Coffee had 30 people attend the February meeting. They have added a monthly breakfast group (outside the Y) and are considering adding another meeting each month. Check out page 10 for more information on ths program.

MISSION REPORT UPDATES ON EFFORTS TO IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY. CHANGES IN RED

TEEN CENTER Eddie Sant iago (above) We are looking at several new partnerships this spring including bringing back the Recruiters Office running Boot Camp classes for the teens, a further partnership with the ARROW project and a partnership with the Board of Health which should allow increased services for our teens.

Our Teen Center staff are working with more than 30 kids each week in developing job- readiness skills each week.

BOXING FOR FITNESS Bruce Frank Through Bruce's determination and commitment to boxing, we have added this as a mission program of the SAYMCA. Bruce has a long history in boxing and sees it as a way to develop life- long fitness and leadership skills in our youth.

He has donated much of the equipment you see in the Boxing Room and continues to support our programs by volunteering his time to teach others to box for fitness.

YOUTH VOLUNTEER CORPS Chris Lassit er This program helps students ages 11 - 18 gain volunteer and leadership skills in our community.

Working with Y staff, students decide the projects they will get involved with, organize and work the event and debrief after each activity.

We started this program in 2015. And it is off to a great start in 2020 and have already completed 10 projects. Kristie Shuey is also volunteering her time to help Chris organize this program.

REACH & RISE (now YOUTH GROUP MENTORING) Ashley Cole In 2015, the SAYMCA got the one grant in Virginia to offer Reach & Rise Group Mentoring for at- risk youth. Based on a program out of San Francisco, this program provides15 hours of training for the mentors before they are assigned mentees. Then, groups of two mentors are matched with six youths between the ages of 8 - 15. The youths are all within two years of age.

Unfortunately, the grant for this program expired in November of 2019. We are currently writing grants to try to bring this program back to our community.

Ashley, with the help of Eric Williams just started a new Youth Group Mentoring Program.

This program has sponsorship opportunities available as we would very much like to keep it in our community.

MISSION REPORT UPDATES ON EFFORTS TO IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY. CHANGES IN RED BILL THE BIKE GUY Bill Blasius We are also saddened to say that Bill the Bike Guy is no longer able to repair bikes for us to sell and give away. Bill is willing to turn over some of his equipment to someone who is willing to continue this tradition as a volunteer for the Y. If you are interested, please see Josh for further details.

VOLTAGE SWIM TEAMS Bet h Valent ine Tori Graham, Porter- Grace Clark and Grace Hardiman are the Swim Team coach with 18 swimmers in the program. We worked with the fromer Augusta County Area Swim Team to have this program come back to the SAYMCA after several years being operated by an outside group. They are gearing up for a busy March.

SUMMER LEARNING LOSS PREVENTION Ashley Cole This Y- USA signature program targets the Achievement Gap. We partnered with Staunton City Schools to make this program possible. We altered the Y- USA program slightly to accommodate the SCS partnership. In doing so, we aren?t officially offering the Y- USA SLLP program but we do have a program that the Staunton City Schools have embraced. In the summer of 2019, we offered the program for 20 - 24 students from all three Elementary Schools. In 2020, we will do the same. This program is supported by the Community Foundation and CAPSAW.

ROCK STEADY BOXING Wendy Shut t y and Judy Briggs One of our huge successes, this program is open to only Parkinson?s disease- afflicted people and their loved ones. Starting in 2017, this program uses their loved ones as ?cornermen? and trains the ?Parkies? to fight back against the disease. This program meets three times a week for 90 minutes and has had tremendous results.

We are now offering two groups of boxers with over 30 participants. In February, David Pretz, Steven Epperly and others replaced the flooring in the room.

PRESCHOOL INITIATIVE Ashley Cole & Nicole Kozikowski Ashley has run a few preschool and homeschool classes to get people primed for us to offer a preschool. They have been successful with members looking forward to future classes. Nicole has added a playgroup to the offerings this winter.

We will also be offering our fourth year of Preschool Camp this summer.

CHILD SAFETY TEAM Nicole Kozikowski Over the past few years, we have been taking steps to prevent Child Sexual Abuse. Working with a third- party called Praesidium we have enhanced some of our policies and procedures to make this happen.

Now, we need to form a Child Safety Team to help us review our policies and procedures. Please let Nicole know if you can join her for this group's first meeting on March 10 at 6:00 p.m.

MISSION REPORT UPDATES ON EFFORTS TO IMPACT OUR COMMUNITY. CHANGES IN RED THE GEORGE SOLT SAFETY AROUND WATER Bet h Valent ine This Y- USA program introduces youth to the water through a series of six sessions. It is designed to have youths feel more comfortable around the water and prepare them in case they need to save themselves in the water. We launched this program in June of 2018 and put 21 children through a pilot program. In 2020, we will be partnering with Staunton City Schools to have another 60 children go through this program.

ADULT BASKETBALL LEAGUES Eddie Sant iago and Chris Lassit er We went back to our roots to offer this first- time venture in the spring of 2018. Using the Y and Shelburne Middle School we featured 24 teams playing in two divisions: competitive and recreational. We are currently registering for the third season of this program.

In 2019, Eddie and Chris added the first year of the Womens Adult Basketball League.

VIRTUAL FITNESS Wendy Shut t y We got a jump start on one of our 2020 Goals when we installed our Virual Fitness projector and screen (above) in the Cardio Fitness Room on the second floor. Wendy is still getting to know the system, and we will start rolling out some of the programs. We have a lot of interest in evening classes and mindfulness programming.

SUPPORT PROGRAMS IN SHENANDOAH COUNTY Josh Cole & Pam Murphy We were approached in 2018 about the opportunity to support the community of Shenandoah County.

Pam Murphy (left) is a former YMCA Program Director and currently the Director of the Shenandoah Community Health Clinic. She has been instrumental in getting community leaders to the table as we work to set up some SAYMCA programs that may help that community.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM Soon t o be: LEAN Wendy Shut t y and Sharon Mayo This is a Y- USA program that we have adapted for the Staunton area. We are currently collaborating with the Diabetes Prevention arm of Augusta Health hospital to run their Diabetes Prevention program.

With the help of the Augusta Lions Club, we offered our first program in January 2019.

The Virginia Alliance of YMCA's has developed a new program called LEAN which we will be rolling out shortly. It is showing promising results.

SAYMCA LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Gabrielle Newby & Chris Lassit er We will be focusing on creating changemakers as the YMCA of the USA has stressed is critical right now.

Gabrielle has already been trained to provide the YUSA trainings to introduce employees to the greater Y movement.

In March, we will be hosting two events to help our staff learn more about the greater Y movement. On March 4 at 2:00 p.m., long- time YMCA CEO Journey Johnson will tell us a little about his YMCA career path and the important things he sees in YMCA leaders. On March 11 at 2:30 p.m., we will host a viewing party as we watch the YUSA's Leadership Journey series featuring YMCA of Greater Louisville's CEO Steve Tarver and he talks about his YMCA career path. See page 14 for more information.

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER SERIES Rhonda Shinaberry We are kicking off a new series with a talk by Ruth Graham about forgiveness on April 3.

On Thursday, February 20, the Salvation Army honored the SAYMCA and Jim Miller (above, left) for our efforts during the Salvation Army's bell ringing this past December.

WE WANT TO KEEP OUR EYE ON VIRGINIA YMCAS THAT ARE FINDING INNOVATIVE WAYS TO IMPACT THEIR COMMUNITIES. RECENTLY, CHRIS LASSITER WAS ABLE TO CATCH UP WITH TWO SAYMCA VOLUNTEERS AND LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR OWN VETERANS COFFEE...

HONORING OUR VETERANS, ONE CUP AT A TIME For every good- natured joke that Meade Stewart has about George Schmock?s time in the US Navy, Schmock has an equally clever comeback about Stewart?s time in the US Air Force.

Beneath the jokes, however, is a deep admiration the two men share for one another. And not just one another, but anyone who served in any branch of the United States military. ?There?s nothing like being a veteran,? Stewart said. ?If you raised your hand and took the oath, you are a veteran.?

That?s why both Schmock and Stewart are so passionate about the Veterans?Coffee at the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA. Held the second Wednesday morning of each month, Veterans?Coffee brings together those in the community who share the special bond of serving in the military. ?If you?ve never been in the military,? Schmock explained, ?you wouldn?t understand the camaraderie.?

Gat hering t he Troops It started with a simple idea: saying thank you to those in our society most worthy of receiving gratitude.

And don?t limit to the expressions of gratitude to words and handshakes. Throw in some free coffee and doughnuts. ?I had done something similar in another community,? said Josh Cole, executive director of the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA. ?It seemed like a good way to honor veterans. It?s a good time to talk

and have fellowship together.?

Schmock helped Cole spearhead the effort from the beginning in 2017. A few more military vets showed up every second Wednesday, and the group from six to a dozen. And from a dozen, that number quickly doubled as well. ?The third month it started to pick up like a snowball,?

Schmock said. ?We?re getting to 25 to 30, and shortly thereafter we were up to 40- something in here.?

Around 30 men and women show up monthly. ?You would have to sit down and listen and appreciate what goes on here,? Stewart said. ?It?s nothing short of fabulous. There are guys that come in that this is their only activity for the month.?

HONORING OUR VETERANS, ONE CUP AT A TIME (cont .)

The Ext ra Mile The Wednesday morning meetings start with everyone going around the room. When a person is up to speak, he or she gives her name and connection to military service. It?s at this thime that the group members with the gift of entertaining others shine. ?That always bring about a lot of conversations,?

Schmock said. ?We have a couple of comedians in here that can really take over and give us a good time.?

Soon, however, Schmock, Stewart and others realized that so many of the veterans were facing such similar challenges that the Veterans?Coffee leadership felt the need to help find solutions.

In addition to a bonding time, Veterans?Coffee often includes guest speakers to address certain issues.

Recently, Schmock had a friend come down from Maryland and talk about his five- and- half year journey to getting 100 percent service- connected disability. ?There has been a lot of good, practical learning that has taken place on in this room,? Stewart said. ?I wish everything we did and said here could be recorded.?

Open Invit at ion Cole is excited about the growth of the program, and Schmock and Stewart love the atmosphere they?ve helped to create.

And even though Veterans?Coffee has been a huge draw, Schmock and Stewart insist there?s more room at the table.

And more coffee and doughnuts.

They?d love to see more veterans come out. ?A lot of us have been there and done that,? Schmock said. ?Anywhere from the Korean War, to Aghanistan and Syria, someone will understand what you went through.

If they don?t understand totally, they?ll know what you?re talking about at least.?

If another YMCA wanted to start a Veterans?Coffee, here are some tips: Keep the day and time consistent.

Set YMCA- appropriate boundaries for discussions.

Create a space that is inviting.

You need a point person to take leadership of the program.

Coffee and comfort foods are important setting an inviting environment. Have lots of coffee ready! Regular and decaf.

JEANETTE ADKINS: "IT MAKES MY HEART HAPPY" Jeanette Adkins isn?t a complainer.

When her husband was diagnosed with dementia, Adkins pushed everything else aside to care for him 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Even when she heard about the Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA?s Adult Respite Care ? a program deisgned to care for full- time family caregivers and their loved ones ? it was difficult to consider receiving help. ?At first I felt so guilty,? Adkins said. ?I felt like I was abandoning him. But the staff ? the ladies ? they encouraged me to go and enjoy myself. It took a while to get over the guilty part. I felt so much responsibility for him.?

Once Adkins was finally convinced that she had to take care of herself in order to take care of her husband, she started to take the respite care staff?s advice. During the time when her husband would be in the Adult Respite Care, she started to do some self care. ?It?s so relieving to me,? Adkins said. ?It gives me a time to relax and rest, and also may go out and enjoy something I like to do; maybe going to different stores and browsing or going out with some friends, or going out for walks and being able to enjoy the fresh air in the park. It?s well needed for rest and peace of mind.?

Nothing makes Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA Adult Respite Care director Laura Hitchin than being able to help people like Adkins. ?It makes my heart happy,? Hitchin said. ?It brings me joy, and it confirms to me that we?re doing the right thing. It?s why we?re here. It makes me want to come to work. This is my passion. I feel privileged that they trust us to leave their loved one with us, and we continue to earn their trust when they continue to bring them.?

The YMCA?s Adult Respite Care program is open from 8:30 am ? 2:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. The licensed program designed to give caregivers a break from supervising an adult requiring around- the- clock supervision.

Enrollment in the program has nearly doubled in 2020, and the Adult Respite Care is need of volunteers with a nursing background. ?Even if they volunteer one day a week,? Hitchin said, ?we could really use that.?

HOMESCHOOL ART: STROKE OF GENIUS

Now students can learn dodgeball and the decorative arts.

As Staunton- Augusta Family YMCA Nicole Kozikowski took survey of the YMCA offered for homeschool families, she noticed a glaring omission.

There were no art offerings.

Until now. ?We were looking at the programs we offered, and we really wanted to add some variety,?

Kozikowski said. ?Art is something that can be very challenging and time consuming for parents, because of the materials involved and setting up.

We thought it would be a good segway since we do offer physical programs like homeschool PE to offer something a little more creative.?

The six- week class was intentional about both letting kids express creativity and further develop their fine motor skills. The class has been working on collages, painting, cut- outs and clay pottery among other things. ?We?re fine- tuning some of our own creativity, but at the same time working on hand- eye coordination,? Kozikowski said. ?We want them to be able to having something in their head come out the way they are in their head. We want them to be to translate them into something.?
