Dear Friends, t is with heartfelt gratitude that we publish our first Honor Roll of Donors to the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus, publicly recognizing those who make it possible to continue serving the more than 5,000 young people who come “home” to Esopus each year.

There has always been a culture of giving here in Esopus. It is wide, it is deep, and I am constantly in awe of the generosity of so many who contribute their time, talents and treasure to support our mission. Their connection to Esopus is palpable!

Through their support, they help create opportunities for students from our schools to experience God’s love in new ways, to better know and understand themselves, to discover a deeper faith and appreciate the sense of Catholic Christian community that is Esopus, while their teachers come to a deeper understanding of their call to be “Marist.”

Throughout the summer, our camp volunteers embody the Gospel message. The care and love they give to our campers are a true testament to faith in action and another powerful sign of God’s love.

And if you’ve visited Esopus recently, you can attest to the many improvements made to our campus. None of these improvements, however, can match the memories created and graces received by those who experience Esopus as “home.”

Every single gift to the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus has a significant impact on those we serve. I hope the pictures throughout this report help illustrate the diversity and richness of the programs you support.

Your continued partnership in our work with young people is most welcoming and encouraging, and I know these words fall short of fully expressing the depth of gratitude and respect I have for all that you have done and continue to do. As you read through these pages I believe you, too, will realize how abundantly our God has blessed us. May our Lord Jesus and His Good Mother, Mary, continue to hold you in their warm embrace.

s an alumna of Marist College, I thought I had an above average understanding of the history and work of the Marist Brothers.

However, since joining the staff at the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus last January, I’ve gained an entirely new perspective of what it means to be “Marist.”

In the faces and actions of the young people and dedicated volunteers who come to the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus, I have seen the simple purity of Marcellin Champagnat’s message. At Esopus, all are equally loved.

I am humbled when I think of how many truly unique and generous people I have met here. Each person who passes through these doors has their own story and connection to this place we all call “home.” I’ve never experienced anything like it. At Esopus, Jesus is truly made known and loved.

On behalf of all who are served here, I express gratitude for each gift and prayer sent our way during the past year. Our retreat programs and summer camps would not have been possible without your thoughtful generosity.

To all who support the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus, I look forward to the opportunity to personally thank each one of you during the coming year.

2017-2018 Events Esopus Runners - $29,021.22 The Esopus Runners is a dedicated team of athletes of all levels who run together in support of the MBCE. This year, the Esopus Runners participated in the Long Island Marathon Weekend on May 6, 2018 and competed in the 10K, half-marathon, and full-marathon. The event not only serves as a fundraiser, but also as an MBCE teambuilder that fosters comradery and supportive friendships. A huge thank you to all our runners and donors. Because of your generosity, we were able to raise $29,021.22 for new golf carts this camp season!

Century Ride - $30,667.72 Twenty-four Riders gathered with their support team in Central Park this year during the early hours of the morning on September 9th for Century Ride 2017. Together they made the grueling 100-mile trip through the city, across the Hudson River and up the steep hills of Bear Mountain towards their final destination: The Marist Brothers Center in Esopus. All to raise money for the children of the Mid-Hudson Valley Camp. They managed to raise $30,667.72 for our Mid-Hudson Valley Camps this year.

Esopus Music - $4,855 Esopus Music is a fundraiser that brings together friends, showcases talented musicians and raises support for the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus, and has so for over 16 years. Esopus Music has been led by Alex Sanchez for the past decade who donated not only her time, but her extraordinary talents to coordinating the entire event, the music acts and recruiting the youth to participate. After 10 years, Alex Sanchez will step down from managing Esopus Music and will pass the torch to Maggie Kimball. This year Esopus Music raised $4,855! We wish to thank Alex for her unwavering commitment to Esopus Music and all of our patrons and musicians.

The Marist Mission at Esopus: A Testimonial Ms. Earline Tweedie, a Marist educator, volunteered this summer at our Mid-Hudson Valley Camp and was joined by her son, David, who participated as a camper. She presently serves as Campus Minister at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA. Her role as mother, educator and volunteer provides a unique insight into our Marist mission here in Esopus.

When we first arrived at MBCE, I was nervous and guarded. I was thinking, “Will they treat my son well? Will he be loved and encouraged? Will David have good behavior and love his counselors?” All of these thoughts swirled in my head as I planned for different options to each of these questions. David was greeted immediately, before me and my students. The adults looked in his eyes with love and great excitement for the week ahead. David was the first order of business for everyone. My mother’s anxiety reduced when David responded with excitement at finding his bed and getting settled.

In the chapel, David was assigned group 3 and he was so happy. He bid me farewell as they left the chapel to go to the pool, not even looking back. My heart was so full with joy at his enjoyment in camp. I watched as campers and staff came together and enjoyed each other’s company and gifts. There was laughter, smiles and joy filling the hallways. Experienced staff mentored new and less experienced staff with patience and understanding. Each camper had a counselor with them and counselors rotated in a group to meet each camper’s needs. The camaraderie and support shown to one another was amazing to see. Only positive words of encouragement were spoken to another, whether staff or camper.

Here was a world of joy, not divided by disability and achievers. There was genuine love and affection moving freely in the halls, activities and people. The dignity and worth of every person were affirmed and valued. The thought of this brings tears to my eyes even now.

During my week at camp, I realized the theology and Marist spirit that I was accustomed to during the retreat season were being practiced differently. The chapel was filled with music, dancing and joy. “Serving the least favored” was in action, not in theory. My prayer was private and active; my Marist spirituality practiced in word and deed.

I was a Marist Educator living the ideal of serving the least favored, not teaching in words what Saint Marcellin taught. Many staff and campers were examples of service to one another, teaching me how to engage, trust and love someone that looks different from me, and has different gifts and abilities. I am humbled by what they taught me.

I am so appreciative of this opportunity. I am very impressed with the work the Directors, counselors, nursing staff and MBCE staff put into the camps. The camp is well organized and focused on making the experience a memorable one for campers and staff. I have enjoyed this experience immensely and hope to return each year with David and students willing to volunteer. David may ask me to attend a different camp in the future and I would now be at ease to send my son to any camp without my presence.
