Plenty of places to see in Muonio by snowmobile

The Muonio snowmobile trail network covers the whole area and is well connected to other trails in the neighbouring districts of Kolari, Kittilä and Enontekiö. In all, there are 350 km of official snowmobile trails in Muonio.

Muonio’s snowmobile trails are maintained during three different seasons: Early, Mid and High. The early season ends at New Year, while the mid season lasts from January to late February. The high season continues from then until mid-April. More and more groomed trails are opened as the spring days get longer.

Matkan varrella taukopaikkana toimii esimerkiksi Kuusikonmaan autiotupa. Reittiä voi helposti pidentää lisäämällä matkaan Äkäs- ja Jerisjärven reitit.

TRAIL TIP: 53-km snowmobile route through fells and lakes

This circular trail starts from Muonio village and takes you along a route about 53 km in length. Most of the snowmobile trails are groomed to category A standards, which means once a week from mid-season onwards.

From the centre of Muonio, the trail leads you via Olostunturi to the scenery around Särkitunturi fell. One of Muonio’s most photographed landscapes opens out before you at Särkitunturi.

The snowmobile trail branches off and climbs steeply up Särkitunturi fell. You can skip this steep section if you prefer, as the route passes through beautiful scenery even when bypassing Särkitunturi.

Coming down the fell to Särkijärvi, the trail will then lead you across several lakes. This route passes through Toras-Sieppi, Torasjärvi and Olosjärvi, and crosses Pikku- and Isolompolo before returning to Muonio.

With its varied route profile and scenery, this ring route makes an excellent day trip. The wellmaintained trails are safe for inexperienced riders and offer driving comfort for more experienced snowmobilers. Along the way, you can stop for a break, for example at the Kuusikonmaa refuge hut. The route can easily be extended by including the Äkäs and Jerisjärvi routes.

According to their classification, trails are groomed either once a week, once every other week or once every three weeks. You can find snowmobile trail maps and their maintenance schedules on the Muonio council website. The Infogis service also provides real-time info from the snowmobile trail network. There are trails for all levels of snowmobilers that lead you to many interesting sights and services.

By far the best way for beginners to explore Muonio’s snowmobile network is on a snowmobile safari. Your guide will take care of navigation and will also teach you how to drive your snowmobile. There is a wide range of safaris available from quick jaunts to longer multi-stage excursions.

Another good choice is to rent a snowmobile and set out to explore the trails by yourself!
