Niclas Sjögren is one of Sweden's leading outdoor writers. He has reported on skiing in Iran, cycling in North Korea and, not least, paddling in Sweden since the 1980s in the leading Swedish lifestyle magazines.

STEFAN SVENSSON Stefan Svensson is a photographer with a studio on Kungsholmen in STHLM. Stefan was educated in the USA and has a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

He works mainly with portraits, architectural and interior photography, and gives training in photography. Stefan lives in Enskede with his wife and daughter.

STEFAN OSSMYR Stefan is currently CEO of the Auxano group and also managing director of Savor Media and publisher of "Key to Stockholm". Stefan holds a master of science degree and has an entrepreneurial background within the IT and Media industry. Stefan was a co-founder of the Auxano group together with Birgitta Ossmyr and joined it in 2004.

LENA WESTERLUND After several years of working within the fashion industry, Lena Westerlund now dedicates her time to illustrations. Her passion for illustrating was sparked during her design studies in Florence, Italy. Lena´s illustrations have a naivistic yet sensitive feel, inspired by all senses, people, travel, architecture and nature.

An exceptional actor plays the incomparable, hotel manager-slash-fairy godfather-slash-golden concierge who ensures guests have the best, most memorable stay at “his” hotel. He captured my heart and respect through his dignified demeanor, style, sense of integrity, professionalism, outstanding service and friendship. Exactly the way I view a concierge today and with the utmost admiration. If you meet one with Les Clefs d’Or (directly translated “The Golden Keys”) on their lapels, you can be guaranteed that they hold the keys to opening nearly any door.

I sit down with STHLM’s real life elite concierge, Sean Naughton, President of SHPF - Les Clefs d’Or Sweden and Head Concierge at Hotel Rival, so he can tell us just a little bit more.

What is Les Clefs d’Or? Les Clefs d’Or, founded in 1952, is a global-wide association of professional hotel concierges. We have over 4000 members in 80+ countries and each member has access to this global network, often forming personal relationships with each other when we attend international congresses each year.

Our members all wear crossed golden keys on our lapels, so we are easily identified. To become a Les Clefs d’Or Concierge, you have to have several years’ experience, be recommended by another member and have passed an inspection and oral interview. Therefore, if you see that your hotel’s concierge has the crossed golden keys on their lapels, you can be rest assured, that you are in good hands!

What is SHPF - Les Clefs d’Or Sweden?

We are the Swedish national section within the larger international association. SHPF (“Svenska Hotell Portier Föreningen”) was founded in 1926 and has the distinction of being the oldest union for hotel concierge and porters in the world! We just recently celebrated our 90th anniversary. Currently we have 13 international members in STHLM and Gothenburg as well as almost 20 more national members.

What inspired you to become a Concierge and why?

I think I have the typical story. Most of us usually start working in the hospitality industry in other positions and, through trial and error, gravitate eventually to the Concierge desk. For me it was just a good fit. You have to have certain skill sets to be a good concierge and to enjoy your job. You have to love your city, be sociable, work well under pressure, and have a wide range of interests. You don’t have to be an expert in everything but have enough interest in different subjects.

Why should a hotel guest use a Concierge as opposed to using the internet?

Great question! These days you have all the information in the world at your fingertips through the internet, but nothing beats talking with a local expert. Not only have we tried the restaurants you want to visit, seen the exhibitions you are curious about, experienced the sightseeing tours you are considering, but we also speak the local language and therefore have even more information readily available. So, why not take advantage of our expert knowledge?

What’s your favorite request from a guest ever?

Hotel guests who contact me in advance to help arrange the perfect day for a special occasion. I once helped a guest rent a helicopter to fly his girlfriend out to an island in the archipelago where he proposed to her.

And the strangest guest request you’ve ever received?

I’ve had some strange ones over the years but in general terms, the ones that make me chuckle are the relatively simple requests, but which are impossible due to geographic difficulties. For example, guests who want to bike around the beautiful fjords (that is Norway), see the majestic Alps (that is Switzerland), visit Russia for an afternoon (too far away). The trick is to find them a suitable (or an even better) alternative.

What do you see for the future of Les Clefs d’Or Sweden?

The future is looking bright! We are slowly growing, both in size and reputation. We have one national member who will hopefully be able to apply for international membership in the near future. Some major actors in the STHLM hospitality and tourism sectors are working closely with us and they have been reaching out to us instead of vice versa. This is encouraging as it means the industry is realizing the benefits of tapping into the Les Clefs d’Or Concierge network.

Welcome to the third issue of Key to STHLM! We really hope that you will find this issue to be educational and inspirational, helping you learn more about STHLM and plan your visit, perhaps even take it home as a great souvenir of your trip to this amazing city.

Summer and autumn are my two favorite seasons in STHLM. Don’t tell winter and spring! Summer is when the city and surrounding area really come alive. The evenings are long and warm, with the sun setting late.

Like bears emerging from hibernation, Swedes really come out of their shells, taking full advantage of the extended daylight hours. Most importantly, the STHLM Archipelago opens up for business! Do not miss the opportunity to visit this natural wonder during the summer months.

STHLM becomes even more beautiful, if that is possible, in the autumn.

The evenings are crisp and cool and things become a little cozier. I love taking long walks in Djurgården Park during this season to enjoy the spectacular fall colors. My favorite part of this season, however, is the food. The Swedish forests and waters produce a bounty of seasonal ingredients that make their way to restaurants around STHLM… mushrooms, berries, bleak roe and wild game.

In this issue, you will find a wide variety of interesting articles as well as many handpicked recommendations, including several from my Les Clefs d’Or Sweden colleagues. Having grown up in Nacka, a suburb just outside the city, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing STHLM evolve into one of the most vibrant capital cities in Europe. I started my hotel career when I was 19 and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve been in the industry for 9 years, the last 5 as a concierge and I’m sure I’ve found my passion. Since the start of 2016, I’ve been a member of Les Clefs d’Or and it has truly been an honor and a privilege to wear the golden keys on my lapels every day.

I spend a lot of my off time on the golf course and play roughly 80 rounds per year. I love the combination of travel and golf, preferably somewhere warm and exotic in the winter. During the summer, Sweden is hard to beat though, with its long coastline and beautiful nature.

BOULE From May to September you will see plenty of boule bars opening up all over the city.

This is to me, a perfect way to spend a warm summer night with some friends.

My two favorite boule bars are Hornstull Strand and Boule & Berså, both located along the waters of Södermalm & Nacka.

DINE Mathias Dahlgren Matbaren is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in STHLM and normally my first recommendation for guests that are looking for modern Swedish cuisine. They focus heavily on what produce is good at the moment. You don´t want to miss their Swedish take on Gyoza when it’s available on the menu.

BEER For anyone interested in beer, you’ve come to the right place. Either you go for the more traditional Akkurat, ranked as one of the best beer bars in the world, or you head to Hammarby Sjöstad and the more modern Nya Carnegie Bryggeriet, located in an old light bulb factory.

MATBAREN

CITY HALL A fantastic building for many different reasons. There are many rooms inside the City Hall that could almost be described as separate art galleries. This is also where the Nobel festivities have been taking place every year since 1929, when it moved from Grand Hôtel and Spegelsalen.

They have several guided tours every day and this is also one of the few ways to see the inside of the City Hall.

KAYAK Rent a kayak for the day or hire a private guide and let them take you on a tour around the many waterways of STHLM. Paddle through the beautiful canal of Djurgården or around Kungsholmen and just below the City Hall.

When MOOD Stockholm threw open its doors back in 2012, it presented a well-thought-out concept with the aim of creating a mood that feels lively, inclusive and international and an overall experience targeting all the senses. The setting is stylish, with muted lighting to create a pleasing sense of luxury, while specially developed, seasonally based audio loops and fragrance effects further enhance the atmosphere.

MOOD now forms an entire quarter: MOOD District, extending along Jakobsbergsgatan, from Malmskillnadsgatan via Regeringsgatan and down to Norrlandsgatan. A new shopping district has been es-

tablished in the heart of central STHLM, with MOOD providing a destination and meeting place to which visitors can head for experiences, shopping, socialising and work practically round the clock. At lunchtime, the restaurants are packed with employees from nearby offices, who often stay on in the evenings for After Work get-togethers with colleagues or dinner with friends.

For those who want to run errands at lunchtime, MOOD offers plenty of shopping options, along with hairdresser’s, beauty and nail salons.

New experience-based store concept MOOD Stockholm features a mix of Scandinavian design and international fashion, accessories and homewares. For example, you will find home furnishing stores Posh Living and Svenssons i Lammhult, which not only offers a wide range of furniture, but also bespoke interior design services for both companies and individuals. In mid 2018, Dutch men’s fashion brand Suit Supply opened a large flagship store at Mood, offering well-tailored, high-quality clothing, made-to-measure suits and stylish accessories in an inspiring setting.

Restaurant zone and fitness facilities In spring 2018, popular and much-frequented restaurants Cavabaren, YUC Latasian, Jureskogs and Yellow opened in the district, transforming Jakobsbergsgatan into a new dining zone in the heart of central Stockholm.

I was born and raised in Skåne in the southern part of Sweden and moved to STHLM in 2003.

HORNSTULL FLEA MARKET In the southern part of the city-in an area called Hornstull, just by the water - there's a flea market that's open each Saturday and Sunday from April to mid-September (generally the 11th or the 17th). Here you can buy everything from a lamp to the latest fashions from some of the many trendy Stockholmers who come out here to sell their belongings. It's also the perfect spot for lunch or a snack, because all the great food trucks make a nice addition to the market. It's really a great spot for people-watching too.

TOKYO DINNER - HAYMARKET I see myself as a sushi expert, so I like having the opportunity to recommend this amazing place right inside the fresh food market, called Hötorgshallen (or Haymarket in English). Here they serve the tastiest sushi you could imagine. They also have other dishes on the menu, such as grilled tuna, pulled-pork tacos etc.

It's open only in the daytime, so get there for lunch or an early dinner.

Dannie Larsson’s road to becoming a jewelry maker wasn’t a straightforward business. She started out as a MBA working at a bank – a job she found immensely boring. However drawing and creative thinking has always been part of her life coming from a family that consists of architects, industrial designers and with a grandpa who was a goldsmith.

According to Dannie the creative vain comes from being left-handed. She soon quit her bank job and set out on a journey of discovery, trying everything from being a chef to a maths teacher to working at a printing house.

She also enrolled in an art history class in Paris were she fell in love with Le Louvre, spending hours in front of the glass pyramid. During her maternity leave she started drawing jewelry, a process she much enjoys since it contains mathematic elements with angles and formulas.

She kept on drawing and drawing until one day she had found her hallmark. As Dannie says “In order to succeed you need to find your own style and a common thread that runs through the whole design."

A RARE design is born Once she had found her design language, it was a quick progression to drawing her jewelry line which resulted in the pax bangle four years ago. The stylish bracelet comes in white, rose or yellow gold with 5 rivets. 2 of the rivets are in white gold and the other 3 are princess cut diamonds turned upside down. The inspiration came from the pyramid in front of Le Louvre. The Pax bangle was the starting point of RARE jewelry. One of the latest challenges has been the NYX series, a series of diamond jewelry with princess-cut diamonds. These seem to float

freely but are meshed with something called Invisible setting - a complicated and unusual way way to set the diamonds. The end result is a glittering piece of jewelry that is visible no matter the light.

Jewelry without limits The work process with the NYX series took time and included a lot of challenges – trials are something Dannie is not scared of. Challenges rather spark her quest for digging deeper in finding new and improved ways of working. She is about to launch a new gemstone grinding technique called RARE Cut which has the shape of an oblong, rectangular emerald but with facets like a brilliant cut. She says “Dare to make mistakes, by making mistakes you will come up with innovative solutions.”

Dannie also believes that her jewelry should be worn daily and not just like a piece of ornament. Therefore, she has created a special locking technique for the diamonds so that you can wear the jewelry to the gym or while doing chores around the house. Dannie always work together with her goldsmith – constantly debating new techniques and production methods. She keeps it local and Swedish produced because she wants to oversee the whole process from beginning to end.

The international design studio Form Us With Love is located on an anonymous street between Vasastaden and Kungsholmen, but it’s anything but undistinguished.

Upon entering, it almost feels as though you are in Santa Claus’ secret workshop, but without the loud colors.

Instead you are greeted by a place of calmness, with a sleek, minimalistic and modern approach. At the same time, you feel the way that things and objects have been crafted, details carefully taken care of – a kind of creative

explosion, and a genuine feeling of a new future being shaped. A future that consists of aesthetics and designs that will last for generations to come with their simplicity, purpose and thoroughness of execution.

How it came to be The two founders of Form Us With Love, Jonas Pettersson and John Löfgren, were classmates studying product design at Linnaeus University in Kalmar. Upon finishing their degree, they wanted to create a stimulating workspace for themselves. “We had the same dreams, goals and ambitions to create a design studio, but we lacked the experience. We found the furniture business extremely inspiring,” says CEO Jonas Pettersson. They didn’t have any work references, and had to create their

chair, Janinge, the design studio created Odger, a clicklock assembly chair made of wood-polypropylene. The chair is the result of a three-year project exploring how a sustainable composite material could be used to create an affordable seat. It is manufactured through a process of injection molding, using a mixture of 70% polypropylene and 30% wood chips. The wood chips all come from reclaimed wood, and recycled plastic is preferred over so-called “virgin” plastic.

own view and walk their own path – a road that would lead them to London, Milano and finally STHLM. Their breakthrough came through their designing of the iconic Cord Lamp for Design House Stockholm. Instead of a lamp that hides the cord, the duo made the cord the main feature. From there, they created the TID watches, watches made with a passion for detail and materials.

Co-founders Jonas and John felt no boundaries, and by creating things they loved, they were fueled with energy to push forward and reach new heights.

Collaborations with love Since its inception in 2005, the studio has worked on a wide range of different projects. Small-scale to monumental, local to worldwide, start-up or well established, it is the studio’s aim to discover the ultimate potential of a project, tackling every design task with clarity, creativity and authenticity. “A collaboration takes place over a long period of time – sometimes up to two years,” says Jonas Pettersson. A good design, according to him, is innovative and sustainable, and involves objects that produce change. Form Us With Love is passionate about production methods, and it’s of great importance that the end result is highly crafted. “When we go into projects, we do it 100% – it has to be love from beginning to end. We try, test out and explore, over and over again, until we are left with grains of gold. “Again, it’s all about raising the bar and pushing boundaries, Pettersson says.

A sustainable future According to Pettersson, the future consists of more sustainable products, with a long life cycle – in the best of worlds, we wouldn’t waste anything. Form Us With Love believes in bio-based materials that allow raw materials to restore themselves without polluting the earth. Their collaboration with IKEA relies on these principles. After success with the affordable stackable

Made with nature A creative process can start with a material, says Pettersson. Form Us With Love are forerunners when it comes to using new sustainable materials. Lately they have been using Acoustic Pulp, which is a material made out of sustainably harvested Swedish fir and pine trees, recycled water, non-GMO wheat bran, potato starch, plant-derived wax, and citrus fruit peels. The material has been developed by researchers over the course of 15 years. Since 2013, the luxury fashion brand Stella McCartney has used BAUX as an integral part of its shops’ design worldwide. The FSC-certified BAUX Träullit is a recycled tile from Sweden made from a combination of wood wool, cement and water. BAUX is Johan Ronnestam, Fredrik Franzon, and the founding members of Form Us With Love: Jonas Petterson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér. Their mission is to create a worldwide brand for interior and architectural materials.

STHLM Love Nature is very much present in the work of Form Us With Love, and STHLM is a fantastic city in all the seasons, according to Pettersson. “Use the contrasts – go tour skating during the winter, and go swimming in the lakes in the summer,” he says. It’s a big city surrounded by nature, and with an easy ride on the subway you can find your self immersed in a natural world like that of Tyresta National Park. Another place that Pettersson frequently returns to is the city island of Långholmen, which is STHLM’s 7th largest island and perhaps the most storied, because of the old prison there. Nowadays, what used to be the prison has been turned into a hotel. This hidden gem offers cozy bathing areas, walking paths and city-adjacent natural environments. The island is also home to one of STHLM’s oldest shipyards, Mälarvarvet. From the eastern part of the island, you have a wonderful view of Riddarfjärden and the Old Town.

Embarking on a journey As I leave Form Us With Love, I can feel the concrete urban jungle of STHLM under my shoes. However, I am left with the thought that the future will be greener. When I meet Ryan Roxie at Guldbaren at Nobis Hotel he is just about to embark on an American tour called the Planet Axe 2.0 Tour with his solo band. He has a relaxed aura around him - having been in the music industry for a long time. His rise to fame began in 1996 when he auditioned for Alice Cooper. He tells me that when he walked into the audition room, he was confident that he would get the gig because he had a vision of what Alice needed: a guitarist that could bring him a 70’s guitar sound that was greasy yet soulful. His sound was a home run and the music career that followed was pretty much like rolling double sixes.

On playing with the giants Roxie has collaborated with many top artists on several albums and has also co-written a number of songs with the King of Shock Rock himself, Alice Cooper. Talking about his time playing together with Slash, he says that Slash was the best guitar teacher one could have asked for, and what Slash does with his guitar rubs off on you. The guitar parts that Roxie writes are always aimed at complimenting the song. Recording the Slash’s Snakepit Album took three consecutive recording sessions before they were pleased with the sound and feeling.

As Roxie says “It doesn’t matter how much money is on the table, music is and always will be the driving passion”.

into forming the band Casablanca together with Josephine Forsman from Sahara Hotnights and other well-known Swedish musicians. “You can just get so far with 'attitude' but you need solid musicianship to back it up”, Ryan says and adds that “in Sweden, musicians come in prepared and ready to work.

The two albums I recorded with Casablanca were great rock ‘n’ roll statements, old school with bombastic sounds."

Top pick’s in STHLM When Ryan heard Depeche Mode playing at Stockholm’s Stadion, originally built for the 1912 Olympic Games, he felt a strong urge to play in the open outdoor arena. A few years later, he opened the show for Kiss at the exact spot – talk about a dream night under the STHLM sky and a packed Stadion. When it comes to socializing, Ryan often frequents several STHLM restaurants, many of whom he has befriended the restaurant owners. Sometimes he plays acoustic guitar at Oyster Bar on Storgatan 20. Aspire to Inspire Ryan Roxie not only wants to create more music; he also wants others to enjoy the world of music. Americans vs. Swedes “As an American, you are raised to believe that you are 'unique' and to stand apart from everyone else”, says Ryan. “You showoff your talent or 'gift' as much as possible”, he continues. The biggest difference between Americans and Swedes is that most Swedes are raised under the idea of 'Jante Law', meaning that people shouldn’t separate themselves from others. The Law of Jante is a way of behaving in order to 'fit in' and for example results in dressing similarly or driving the same types of car as your neighbor - Can you say Volvo? What Ryan admires most about the Swedes in this aspect is their teamwork attitude that they have rooted in their backbone, but at the same time they celebrate individualism.

Swedish Music Collaborations This sense of teamwork Ryan was seen firsthand when he starting forming bands in Sweden. He says that the music scene can be very 'cliquey' but that he has been able to connect with many different types of musicians in Sweden. It led him

Victor de Mello was given his first Scuba diving kit with two cylinder tanks, a mask and a weight belt at the age of 12. Diving in the rough Portuguese waters and the films of Jacques Cousteau sparked a dream to work underwater once. To him being under water is as natural as it is for others to walk on land. After finishing school in Lisbon he packed his belongings and decided to make Rio de Janeiro his new adventure. Once there he joined the Brazilian navy as a civilian, doing underwater army training. When love took him to Scotland he decided it was time to fulfil his lifelong passion and take the British qualifications as a saturation- and mixed gas diver.

After that, several years of working offshore on oilrigs and other construction projects followed, taking him to places such as the Middle East and South East Asia over a period of more than 8 years. Working as a diver also means inspecting and documenting underwater works with a camera. This sparked another desire – to work as a fashion photographer. Victor de Mello turned from a diver into a fashion photographer, working worldwide for more than 17 years.

STHLM life and Slussen By moving to Sweden with his Swedish wife he felt himself once again surrounded by sea and harbor life. STHLM urged him to take on the profession of his youth as an offshore diver. Luckily enough he was able to meet the right person to give him the opportunity to continue his dream and let him go back to the underwater world of construction. Victor was made part of the SVENTAB divers in October 2016 on the Slussen project. Slussen has served Stockholmers for over 70 years and has become one of the most historically important junctures in the

City. After the reconstruction, Slussen is to become a vibrant meeting place with modern traffic solutions. The aim is to turn it into one of Stockholm's most attractive meeting spots with cultural events, entertainment venues, parks, restaurants and cafes. This is when Victor decided to use his photographic career and keep a daily picture diary about the underwater world of Slussen.

On commercial diving in Sweden Diving in Sweden is dark, cold and with no visibility. It’s also a job where the unexpected continuously happens due to harsh climate conditions. You have to get used to things constantly moving; it’s like a rollercoaster where one has to adapt to change and be able to solve problems that arise, says Victor. At the end of the day it’s not a job, it’s an adventure, he continues. The diving team in Slussen consists of highly skillful individuals who are as talented above water as under the surface. A diver has to be creative with an eye for solutions to underwater problems that would normally involve many fields above water, such as welders, bricklayers and carpenters. He also points out that the Slussen project is not a story by one man – it is a collaborative effort of many divers and many tradesmen that goes beyond itself in its grandeur. One simply has to understand the magic and the hardships involved, since Slussen has two levels of water: the Baltic Sea, the Sluss in between and the water from Mälaren.

Not only that, diving in Sweden retains a link to the past since the divers are using a free flow air helmet that supplies the diver with a continuous flow of breathing air similar to the cooper helmet in use in the old days.

The Venice of the North For a man who has lived in so many continents, Victor considers STHLM as one of the few beautiful cities and as a wonder of the world with its unique archipelago. If you come to STHLM you have to experience it by water. Stockholm alone has over 30,000 beautiful islands, which makes it even harder to choose where to go, especially if you are on a short trip. Make a day trip or an overnight stay to Sandhamn, that pretty much has it all: from kayaking and scuba diving, along with an excellent network of walking paths that take you along the coast, as well as excellent shops and restaurants in the charming main town and a great nightlife. Another relaxing spot for a short day trip is charming Waxholm located only 45 minutes from town, where you can enjoy cute houses and a nice fika (the practice of taking a break with friends or colleagues over coffee and a snack, an important part of Swedish culture). Don’t miss out on the boat taking you to Grinda, says Victor, since it’s one of the most unique islands in the archipelago, featuring lush forests, beautiful coves and bays, sandy beaches and a great restaurant. Finally, if you are interested in the world of diving, make a stop at Slussen and experience the divers in full action, concludes Victor.

Millesgården was the home of sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, Olga. With remarkable dedication, they built and then continuously beautified the home.

Located on the island of Lidingö, STHLM, Millesgården, with its restful park, rippling sculpture fountains and flower-decked terraces, is a unique environment, one that offers visitors both relaxation and cultural experiences. The museum park features sculptures, fountains, the Artist’s home, a collection of antiquities and an Art gallery. The internationally renowned artist’s most important works are installed here, and in the Large studio, visitors can learn about Milles’s artistic process and how his works came into being.

Carl Milles (1875-1955) is one of Sweden’s best known sculptors. At a time when many of Sweden’s cities were expanded and modernised, Milles was the monumental sculptor who received the major art commissions.

Traditional in his choice of motifs, Milles’s inspirational sources were mythology and Swedish history. His art was always figurative but the way he interpreted the motifs was innovative, such as his idea in his later years of plac-

ing his sculptures on high pillars and employing technical solutions to lend them the appearance of floating in the air. Combining heavy materials such as granite, diabase and bronze with the lightest of elements, water and air, Milles placed his works in fountains or on pillars striving towards the heavens. Milles had a prolific career spanning more than half a century and his sculptures are to be found all over the world, including China, Australia, Japan and not least the United States where he lived and worked for 20 years. At Millesgården in Lidingö more than 200 of Milles’s sculptures are displayed.

During a sojourn in Munich, the 30-year-old sculptor became inspired by German sculpture and moved away from the impressionist style and adopted a heavier and more stylised way of working. In 1906, newlyweds Carl and Olga returned to Sweden and purchased a plot of land on the island of Lidingö, which would become Millesgården. While the couple planned their future home and Milles worked intensely on a number

of sculptures, including Gustav Vasa, Playing Bears and The Wings, he suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage. His condition was critical and an X-ray revealed a pea-sized stone pulp consisting of marble dust formed while developing the Hylas sculpture. His health improved after convalescing at Lake Garda in Italy and in 1909 the couple moved into their new home. Designed by architect Carl M. Bengtsson, the villa comprised dark wood panelling, a steeply sloping tiled roof and national romantic features according to the trends of the day.

Carl Milles continued to develop Millesgården for 50 years. Adjacent plots of land were purchased and the mountainous slopes terraced. His half-brother, architect Evert Milles, contributed to realizing Carl Milles’s plans and dreams for the design of the complex. Located atop a high cliff, Millesgården enjoys views of the lake Värtan.

Here the artist couple had their studios and Milles’s works could be displayed for potential clients in a suitable environment. The terraces, fountains and sculptures of the sculpture park were framed by pines, junipers and birch trees, and dotted with Milles’s architectural elements. In turn-of-the-century STHLM there was much demolition going on and Carl Milles had acquired a marble portal and a significant number of columns and capitals from demolition sites in the city. Perhaps he was inspired by Rodin, who had placed ancient building elements and columns in the garden of his home in Meudon outside Paris. During the 1910s and 1920s, Millesgården and its architecture became increasingly neoclassical and lighter in style. The windows were enlarged and loggias were

constructed, relieving the somewhat heavy impression.

In 1921, Carl and Olga visited Pompeii and fell in love with the Italian gardens on the Mediterranean coast.

Milles incorporated Roman gods, ancient sea creatures and ancient mythology into his sphere of motifs, which resulted in a playful Nordic Mediterranean hybrid. An example of this is the mosaic floors which incorporate tritons and columns interlaced with coltsfoot and linea from the county of Småland.

In 1920, Carl Milles was appointed Professor of Modelling at the Royal Academy of Art in STHLM. The sculpture Susanna in black diabase won the Grand Prix at the World’s Fair in Paris and following an exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London in 1927, the commissions continued to pour in. It became something of a trend among Swedish cities to decorate the central square with a Carl Milles sculpture. Examples include Europe and the Bull in Halmstad, Folke Filbyter in Linköping, the Orfeus Group at Hötorget in STHLM and Poseidon in Gothenburg. The proceeds from his sculpture commissions were ploughed into the expansion of Millesgården and from 1915 also into the purchase of antique sculptures.

Like Anders Zorn and Auguste Rodin, Milles had an interest in studying and collecting antique sculpture. In 1955, at the time of his death, Carl Milles’s collection was Sweden’s largest and most valuable private collection of antique sculpture. Although Olga and Carl had no children, Carl Milles’s desire to leave something behind was amply fulfilled – in the form of the artistic creation of Millesgården.

The Museum Scene

The Vasa is the only seventeenth century ship preserved in the world. Ninety-five percent of it is original, and it is adorned with hundreds of carved sculptures.

The salvaging of the Vasa was a historic moment, and today Sweden is able to boast of a treasure that is unique in the world. The ship is displayed in a specially constructed museum in STHLM. The Vasa is surrounded by 11 different exhibits, a well-stocked museum shop and a first-class restaurant.

Tours of the museum are conducted daily, and they can now be experienced in a new way through audio tours. There are 15 stations designated around the museum with 15 different soundtracks that you can download directly to your device or MP3 player. A video about the Vasa is available in 16 languages.

After five years closed the renovation of the new spectacular Nationalmuseum at Blasieholmen is finished and the museum has been opened again since October 2018. The Nationalmuseum is a government authority with a mandate to preserve cultural heritage and promote art, interest in art and knowledge of art. The collections comprise of painting, sculpture, drawings and prints from 1500-1900 and applied arts, design and portraits from early Middle Ages up until present day.

Fredrik Eriksson is an established and well-known Swedish publican and restauranteur. He runs the popular and very successful Långbro Värdshus in southern STHLM. Fredrik began his cooking career with Erik Lallerstedt at the restaurant Eriks Fisk and he has also run the Fjäderholmarnas pub in the STHLM archipelago, in addition to other ventures. He cherishes Swedish gastronomy and often makes appearances on national television.

With his solid background and keen entrepreneurial spirit, Fredrik, together with colleagues Patrik Högberg and Bodil Stigsdotter, presented a concept and set-up to the management of the Nationalmuseum as to how they thought the newly renovated restaurant at the museum should look and operate.

Following a tough competition against nearly 50 other well-established constellations of restauranteurs, Fredrik and his team successfully won the contract.

"It is a huge honor to be able to take on the restaurant at the newly renovated Nationalmuseum," says Fredrik.

Frederik emphasizes how important it is that the museum management understand the way in which the restaurant forms a big part of the overall visitor experience. And

they understand that very well at the Nationalmuseum, he adds. We work very closely together. There are never any problems or issues!

At the restaurant, we focus on classic Swedish cooking in a contemporary style. We take inspiration from French and Italian cuisine, he explains.

"We are by no means fine dining! Visitors order and pay for their dishes at the bar. The food is then brought to the table and guests can choose themselves where they want to sit.

We always have a few different specials on offer every lunch time. And in general we change the menu each week," he continues.

If visitors don’t want to eat a whole cooked meal, they can visit the Glasbaren café instead, which can be accessed via the Sculpture Park. Here guests can enjoy small plates, soup and various different pastries. There is a huge range of drinks on offer as well. Everything from Champagne through to Italian bubbly and wines from France. There’s no shortage of choice.

Fredrik points out how important his staff are. Some bring a great deal of experience from within the restaurant industry to the table while others are just starting out in their gastronomic careers.

"It is important to make the restaurant an attractive place to work," Fredrik says. It can be hard to attract skilled staff in STHLM today, which is why it’s extra exciting that the efforts made by Fredrik and his team at Långbro Värdshus were able to help the guest house win "Workplace of the Year" within the restaurant industry.

The Nationalmuseum put together a group of Swedish designers at an early stage in order to create a proper restaurant environment, both in terms of the decor and all the tableware (cutlery, dishes, glasses, etc). We were able to participate and give our opinions throughout the

entire process to help ensure the practicality of all the pieces designed. It was important not only to get the aesthetics right, but to make sure everything was practical to work with as well. Over 80 objects share a single signature.

When the museum was renovated, emphasis was placed on letting in more nature light through new windows, etc.

This mindset has also influenced the placement of the restaurant as well. Guests can enjoy views over Strรถmmen bay and the Royal Palace through huge window panels.

After my visit with Fredrik, where I enjoyed a hearty and delicious lunch, I then went for a wander around the museum. I was really struck by how fantastic the renovation was.

Nothing was there by chance. Every last detail was thoroughly and carefully considered. As I headed out, I found myself already wondering when I would next be able to come back. Through all the great work that has been done, the city now has an attraction that not only give us a great restaurant with lofty ambitions, but also yet another fantastic museum experience to enjoy. And just like that one plus one can quickly become three!

IT IS QUITE EASY NOWADAYS TO FEEL A BIT CONFUSED WHENEVER WE OPEN THE MENU AT A TRENDY NEW EATERY, OR TRY TO READ A RECIPE FROM A MAGAZINE. WE COME UP AGAINST LOTS OF NEW WORDS AND TERMS, SUCH AS “MSC-LABELLED FISH CAUGHT IN SUSTAINABLE WATERS.” IT ISN’T ALWAYS EASY TO KEEP UP AND UN-

We live in a world of finite resources, and in order for things to last, we need to get used to new ways of living and eating. Plant parts that we once would throw away are now being used in new and innovative dishes. One good example is carrot tops, which can be used to make a quick and delicious carrot pesto. All of a sudden, the entire carrot is being used. New dishes and mixtures of raw ingredients are popping up all the time.

Take rice, for example. Which type should we choose?

Arborio rice, basmati rice, jasmine rice, long-grain rice, round-grain rice, raw rice, instant rice, wild rice or black rice? There are more than 1,000 different cultivated rice varieties. Rice is grown over large swaths of Asia, South America, Africa and the USA, to name just a few places.

It provides food to more people per square meter than both corn and wheat combined. Rice is used to produce milk alternatives for vegans and people with allergies. In many countries, it is eaten at every single meal of the day.

Simply put, rice is an excellent ingredient for the future!

We are eating more fish and vegetables, and less meat. But when we do eat meat, we tend to eat better, tastier and more expensive cuts. The whole animal gets used now, which wasn’t always the case in the past.

We waste huge amounts of food. New companies have popped up in order to deal with leftover, but completely edible raw ingredients that convenience stores and supermarkets are unable to sell. Students at the Chalmers University of Technology have recently been awarded a grant, funded by the country’s biggest food producing companies, to develop a business model that allows unsold food in supermarkets and convenience stores to be prepared and distributed to restaurants for

consumption. They will present their assessment in August of this year.

All of us also increasingly want to feel better and healthier, and one of the main ways to achieve this is by taking care of ourselves, staying active and watching what we eat. All sorts of new and exciting gyms are opening everywhere we look. We are taking care of ourselves in new ways. Exercise regimes of various kinds are helping us to attain physical balance and well-being. The restaurant industry is not far behind on these trends, either. Restaurants with entirely vegan menus are opening up, offering new and innovative dishes. It is getting easier and easier to have food delivered. We have been able to take our food to go from restaurants for a long time, but now, the to-go packaging used is made from starch or recycled paper and wood, helping make our world more sustainable. As consumers, we are thinking more carefully about what we eat and buy.

We want to know more about our fruits and vegetables.

Where do we get our tomatoes and apples from? How far have they been transported? Our priorities are beginning to change. Just a few years ago, we had a tendency to reject Swedish apples in favor of their better-looking, imported counterparts. Now we’re buying Swedish fruit like never before!

Vegetarianism and veganism are becoming more and more common among the younger generation. New ingredients that have been ignored for a long time are now suddenly in high demand. Cabbage and all of its variants, such as kale and cauliflower, is one pertinent example. Even different potato varieties are becoming more popular. We are learning more about ingredients

about what it means. Do we always have to be at one extreme or the other?

The term “fast food” has been a topic of discussion for decades. We want good, nutritional food, and we want it fast. It doesn’t matter if it takes a long time to make. But it needs to come out quickly once we’ve placed our order. A number of restaurants have popped up recently that serve good food and serve it quickly. For example: One of the best chefs in the country, Malin Söderström, has, together with her colleague Carl Ullsten, founded The Fishery and The Farm Family to showcase their concepts. The two spots can be found side by side in Brunkebergstorg Square, in central STHLM. The Farm Family is the perfect place to enjoy a wholesome salad that really packs a punch. Among their offerings is a tofu salad with oyster mushrooms, algae and Japanese furikake seasoning. The cherry on top comes in the form of a delicious dressing made from jalapeños and sesame.

The vegetables used in the dish are prepared and acidified, or baked, so that the whole dish comes together and you are left with much more than just a simple salad. Next door, at sister restaurant The Fishery, particular highlights include the fish stew with mussel broth and the fish tacos with marinated rainbow trout.

Over on Roslagsgatan Street, newcomer Kale & Crave opened its doors for the first time last autumn, with classic kale in the spotlight – an ingredient that, here in Sweden, is usually only eaten at Christmas. A favorite dish here is frikadeller meatballs in a hearty tomato sauce, served with kale, black rice, parmesan and almonds.

We live in a changing world, and it’s a good thing we do. Now is the time to be receptive and explore new ways to secure a better, and perhaps healthier, future.

We are now even growing chilis up here at our frosty latitudes. Ingredients such as soya beans are being used to make the cottage cheese-like substance tofu, which is becoming all the more common in Swedish kitchens.

Tofu is used as a substitute for milk products, and in dishes for vegans and people with milk allergies or lactose intolerance. With its neutral taste, tofu can soak up other flavors and can be used to produce many different things, such as ice cream, vegetarian meat substitutes and vegan cheeses, and so on.

New varieties of fish that we haven't been accustomed to eating are now making an appearance at our markets’ fish counters. In the media, we are reading more and more about edible insects.

We are also beginning to think a lot more about the world we live in. We don’t want our raw ingredients to be chemically treated or altered. We want most of our ingredients to be organic. The harvests are less bountiful, and prices are going up, but we are getting cleaner and fresher produce while also causing less harm to our natural environments and soils.

The way we eat has also changed. Our classic three daily meals have now split up into more. A little snack here and there, an energy bar after the gym, and a health drink when we get home. To help us keep going when we get tired, we have an energy drink. When it’s time to eat, we want our food fast. Trends come and go. We are drinking less alcohol now, for example. Alcohol-free beers are taking off. We are more and more dependent on our cars and other means of transport that we drive ourselves. It’s easier today to keep up with our friends and go out to eat, drink and socialize if we are still able to legally drive ourselves home afterwards. We are also taking care to consume fewer calories, making it easier to control our weight.

Simply put, it seems the pendulum has swung from one side to the other. But where is the best place for it to land, we might ask? Use the word “balance,” and think

the art of making

with mustard cream sauce

The origin of this simple but super tasty dish is said to be the Hôtel Rydberg which was once located at Gustav Adolfs Torg in STHLM, right beside the Opera.

Hôtel Rydberg was established as a hotel and restaurant between 1852–1856, in accordance with elevations drawn up by Albert Törnkvist. In its day, the hotel was one of the most wellknown entertainment establishments in the city and a popular spot for journalists and writers.

The foundations for the hotel were donated by Abraham Rydberg to the Stockholm’s Wholesalers Society and were intended to be used not for the establishment of a hotel, but a hôtel-deville – i.e a town hall. It is unclear today whether this misunderstanding was due to linguistic barriers or if it was an intentional misinterpretation in order to launch STHLM’s very first hotel.

Hôtel Rydberg was demolished in 1914 and the stately front door to the hotel is today preserved for all to see at the old entrance to Millesgården Art Museum & Sculpture Park.

Biff Rydberg is an "unmixed" or deconstructed version of the classic Swedish hash dish, pyttipanna. A truly luxurious spin on traditional home cooking. When me and my childhood friends are going out to eat together, our choice of restaurant often

comes down to whether or not this dish is on the menu. It always goes down great accompanied by a snaps and a good lager, if that’s the kind of mood you’re in.

The thing you need to keep in mind when preparing Biff Rydberg is to cut the tenderloin strips that little bit bigger. Then when you’re frying them off later, take care not to crowd the pan.

They should be pink on the inside and should never be left alone to simmer away in the pan.

Ingredients for four people:

Mustard Cream 7 fl oz (2 dl) Full cream 2.5 tbsp Coleman’s mustard powder 2 tbsp Sugar 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2.5 tbsp Horseradish, freshly grated 1/5 tsp Salt, finely ground 1/5 tsp Black pepper, ground Recipe: Gently whip the cream and add in the other ingredients.

Mix well and season with salt and pepper.

To serve 4x

Egg

Lay out the meat, onions and potatoes on a serving dish. Serve with the mustard cream, egg yolks, some fresh sugar snap peas and some fine cilantro.

Biff Rydberg 14 oz (400 g) Tenderloin 4x Potatoes, large 3x Onions, medium-sized 1 tbsp Butter 2/5 tsp Salt, finely ground 2/5 tsp White pepper, ground 1 tsp Sugar 1 tsp Apple cider vinegar 7–10 fl oz (2-3 dl) Oil to fry the potatoes, preferably

a high quality olive oil Recipe: 1. Peel the onions and potatoes.

2. Finely slice the onions and the potatoes and cut the meat into 1.5 cm strips. Fry the onions in butter on a low to medium heat together with the sugar and vinegar for approximately 15 minutes until they caramelize. Take care not to let it burn! Season with salt and pepper.

3. Heat the oil and deep fry the potatoes for a few minutes until they become golden in color. Remove the potatoes using a slotted spoon and place them on kitchen towels. Keep warm.

4. Fry off the meat in a bit of the oil that was left over from the potatoes in a very hot pan. Season with salt and pepper.

Spanjorskan Restaurant I visited the restaurant at dinner time and sat down with my company. We could hear Spanish be spoken at the table beside, where everyone was sharing a delicious paella! It looked absolutely mouth-watering. We kicked off the evening with some tapas before then enjoying a paella ourselves. The seafood paella was truly delicious.

The drinks list was extensive and most of the wines were available by the glass. We rounded off our meal with a classic Crema Catalana for dessert.

The evening met all of our expectations and we were pleased to learn that they also serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays – so pleased, in fact, that we decided to book a table for that very weekend, because Spanjorskan is absolutely the sort of place you can visit several times in the one week!

Spanjorskan restaurant on Nybrogatan 42 is undoubtedly the place to go if you want to enjoy all the joys of the Mediterranean right in the heart of STHLM. It is an incredibly cozy restaurant. In the summer time, it has a great outdoor seating area where you can sit and enjoy a glass of Cava or Rioja as you watch the world go by. Inside, you’ll find a well-decorated restaurant with a generous bar. The colors and design will truly make you feel like you’ve reached southern latitudes. The large ceiling fans circulate the air and fill the space with scents of garlic and spices, while the background music is packed with southern Spanish flair.

The menu offers dishes and ingredients from all over Spain. You can combine tapas with larger dishes for a real Spanish fiesta.

Tennstopet Cellar Restaurant

One of the city's oldest and most fabled restaurants is called Tennstopet. The name comes from one of its previous owners, who was a tin engraver. He had the restaurant decorated with beautiful items made of tin. The inn got the nickname Tennstopet ("the tin pot").

To start with, Tennstopet was located on Fredsgatan in the historical Klara quarter. At that time the place was a billiards hall. It all started in 1867. But when the building was about to be demolished, the inn was moved to Vattugatan, still in the Klara district. Journalists, Bohemians and artists all flocked here. Among the most prominent of them were Beppe Wolgers, the troubadour Conelius Vreeswijk, the writers Lars Forsell and Vilhelm Moberg, as well as Fritiof Nilsson Piraten.

Over the years, the name Tennstopet became the established name of the restaurant. In 1965 the entire Klara district was transformed and the restaurant moved to its current address at 50 Dalagatan. Several different innkeepers have owned and run the restaurant over the years.

But the important thing about the restaurant is that it is still extremely popular. Tennstopet's menu is adapted to the season, but always features classic Swedish favorites. We often have guest performers. You need to come early to get a place. It's a good idea to reserve a table. There is a pleasant outdoor service area, which is very popular in the summer.

We suggest you start your meal with the classic Swedish favorite "GubbrĂśra pĂĽ kavring", then the Wallenbergare with browned butter and mashed lingonberries, and finish with a little truffle and a cup of coffee.

Or you may want to try my own favorite - roast beef with traditional garnishings and French fries. There's also an excellent drinks menu with everything you can wish for, and a great many delicious wines, also by the glass.

Once you visit Tennstopet, you'll definitely want to come back again very soon.

Vegetarian has become very important and popular.

Therefore, it is fun to see how the restaurant comes up with different alternatives.

During my last visit, I tried the restaurant’s entrecote Café de Paris. If you are looking for a piece of meat, I recommend it.

To finish off the experience, there is an excellent Crème Brûlé, and for the drink choices, even with dessert, there are many to choose from. La Colline is a pub that STHLM residents would love to go back to and the temporary visitor will have a beautiful culinary memory from our capital city.

La Colline has only been open for about a year and a half but it is already a classic. I visited the restaurant for lunch and had to squeeze through the crowd to get a table.

The restaurant has a great atmosphere with most of the decor comes from well-known Swedish building materials with some tile from the countries around the Mediterranean. One of Sweden’s most prominent restaurant designers, Jonas Bohlin, has left his mark on the atmosphere and, as usual, to great success.

The name is French and means “the hill”. Large windows facing Götgatan, one of “söder’s” more wellknown streets and is just a stone’s throw away from Gamla Stan (10 minutes walk). During the summer the restaurant doubles in size when a cozy outdoor seating area gets going. The menu is Swedish with inspiration from France and the Mediterranean. The dishes are modern and the wine list is impressive. Over 450 different wines and many options for glasses. Most of them are from small producers, and several of them are organic. When I speak with the restauranteur, Mac Donald Lundgren, he praises his staff, as one should. “We have a fantastic sommelier, Anna Mellfors, with true knowledge and a great interest in wines. The kitchen houses elite staff under the leadership of executive chef Simon Pettersson. ”I am very proud of all of them.”

STHLM has been undergoing a range of changes for the better, especially in the summer months. Concerted efforts have helped the city to retain its genuine spirit even if, like so many other global cities, it swaps many of its local residents for new visitors in the summertime. Streets that are normally bumper to bumper in the winter become pedestrian walkways in the summer, opening the city up to a wealth of new possibilities. The transformation is all down to a concept known as Living STHLM which has been developing each year since 2015.

It’s a scheme that has been largely modelled on Bryant Park in New York, which truly blossoms in the summer thanks to a number of seasonal initiatives centered around environment, culture and entertainment.

The city runs its own initiatives and everyone is invited to take part! Business and visitors alike all contribute with their own unique efforts and presence. In total, there are around 20 different places all across STHLM that are characterized by these efforts in the summer and the best part is that everything happens in the city’s most public of spaces – outdoors. So why not experience STHLM in a slightly different way – enjoy another kind of night out in the city’s bright and airy summer evenings (or days)!

I would like to highlight two streets in particular, both in different parts of town and with their own histories, and both part of the initiative over several years.

Rörstrandsgatan Street in the northern neighbor-

hood of Vasastan was a center for porcelain production in the 18th century and home to the prestigious Rörstrand Porcelain Factory. There are a lot of local streets that still bear traces of this history, with names in Swedish like clay or stoneware, to name just a few examples.

Also remaining from the area’s history is a smaller part of Rörstrand Castle, which has since been incorporated together with the Filadelfia Church. From the northern part of the street (numbers 30–64), visitors can enjoy an incredible view over Karlberg Palace and Karlberg Canal. The street is also known for its many restaurants and cafés which really come to life along this pedestrian street in the summer, creating a truly fantastic atmosphere. The municipality does its part by supplying flowers, benches and other decorations that help the local street life and atmosphere to really rise above all expectations.

Swedenborgsgatan, named after scientist Emanuel Swedenborg, is a street located on Södermalm, which is a neighborhood that was originally inhabited by working class Stockholmers but is now regarded as the hipster part of town. The street shoots out from the cute little park in Mariatorget Square. Swedenborgsgatan is home to a number of restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating and a cozy little wine bar by the name of dryck, which means drink in Swedish. Thanks to the combined efforts of the city and these restaurants, the atmosphere along the street is wonderfully familiar and incredibly welcoming. And if – against all expectations – the sun decides not to show its face, visitors in the area can head instead to the Rival boutique hotel with its top-class 10-meter bar on the ground floor, right by the entrance at Mariatorget Square.

Since STHLM is absolutely surrounded by water, there is no better place to break free of your routine—if only temporarily. The city has a number of beautiful outdoor swimming spots that the locals use to keep fit during the long, warm days of the summer months. Some Swedes even venture a brisk winter swim and combine the experience with a sauna like true Vikings. Studies actually show that those who venture out in the frigid winter waters have lower blood pressure, are more resistant to cold weather and cope better with stress—not to mention the invigorating endorphin release that comes after a winter dip. A great place for both lake swimming and winter swimming is Hellasgården, just 20 minutes from the city center by bus.

Urban outdoor gyms STHLM is dotted with outdoor gyms that suit young and old alike. Some are crafted entirely out of wood while others use metal, but they are designed with one common theme— they are easily accessible and free to use. Jump into your workout clothes and head for Rålambshovsparken on Kungsholmen. Besides being the perfect sunny day setting for a walk, picnic, bocce match and a host of other outdoor activities, Rålambshovsparken, also offers a rugged steel outdoor

gym. This gym consists of six different stations which use your own body weight as resistance. And any fitness buff would not want to miss the chance to work out at Gärdet’s outdoor gym and take a post workout cool-down swim in the Kampementsbadet outdoor pool This beautiful gym is crafted entirely in wood and allows you to challenge yourself with ground lifts, sit ups, dips, bench presses, shoulder press, squats and balance training.

Plogging This is a new fitness trend that can make a difference for your own health and the planet. Plogging is a workout that combines jogging and litter collection. The name is a combination of the Swedish term “plocka upp,” which means to pick up,, and jogging. The phenomenon was first seen in Sweden in 2016 and has gained momentum worldwide anywhere people are sick and tired of seeing litter on their daily run. Old Town STHLM hosts an annual race called the MO-loppet, a run that is now dedicated to collecting trash—a race for a cleaner city center and a better future for the planet.

Urban Sanctuaries Even though Swedes are known for their love of the outdoors, they also enjoy the peace and tranquility of a yoga class or simply relaxing in a robe poolside, tucked away from the buzz of the city. Urban Om is the place to go if you are looking to make a deeper connection with your inner self and embrace life’s challenges by letting go. Urban Om offer daily classes in English and you can pay on a drop-in basis. However, some classes are in high demand, so check the website before heading over. Urban Om offers everything from classical yoga and chakra dance meditation to acharya yoga.

to be one of the world’s largest brands of spirits in the premium segment: Absolut Vodka.

We make a short stop on Långholmen, which was a prison island until 1974. Like a very light version of Alcatraz. We have a coffee break and eat an egg sandwich, called “fika” in Swedish, before we sit down in the kayaks again. We glide through the narrow Pålsundet Strait and pass one of the world's noblest collections of classic wooden boats, all privately owned. It is like being thrown back to the time when Ingmar Bergman was making the film Summer With Monika. Which as a matter of fact, he did right here back in August 1951.

On both sides of the narrow strait it’s screaming green. A blackbird sings the last verse of the summer.

Our paddles cleave the surface and we slide forward virtually without a sound. At this moment it doesn’t feel far-fetched at all that STHLM is called the Venice of the North. But perhaps one should add that in STHLM’s case it is a big city where you paddle on drinking water?

The sun sets in the west. Hipster heaven, or the district of Södermalm, shows off its most beautiful side in the evening light. Buildings from the turn of the century.

Towers. Cliffs. The old Münchenbryggeriet brewery’s magnificent brick façade. Right next door to where The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was filmed in autumn and winter 2010 and 2011. We glide past the restaurant and the party boat Patricia. This was originally an English lighthouse boat that during World War II served both at Dunkirk and during D-Day in Normandy. A boat with still visible war wounds that has housed both Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II. But in Sweden the boat is better known for the parties that the Swedish gay community hosted back in the 80’s, and actually still do.

We turn north and paddle towards Stockholm City Hall's magnificent façade and golden tower spire with the heraldic national symbol, the three crowns, one of Sweden's most recognized silhouettes. Soon we stand on the jetty just outside Stockholm Adventures’s office.

It feels like we have completed at least a full day on the water, with all the impressions we try to sort. But the whole trip was only 3.5 hours. Soon we stand on solid ground again. I bid farewell to my new friends and we exchange Facebook profiles. I walk away to Stockholm Central and hop on the commuter train home. On the one hand, very close, on the other hand, enormously far away from where I found myself a moment ago.

We get into the kayaks in the narrow Karlbergskanalen canal just outside Stockholm Adventures’s headquarters, within walking distance of Stockholm Central Station, the City Terminal and several of the capital's most centrally located hotels. The instructions are simple, the kayaks are stable and several participants in the small international group have never paddled before. Joakim Malm, founder and operational manager of Stockholm Adventures, has some simple technical tips on the paddling we are facing, but focuses on a single instruction as the most important: – Just relax.

And relaxed it is. It is surprisingly easy to paddle a kayak on the completely calm water in the canal that leads us out under the bridge that connects the Stockholm City Hall and Kungsholmen Island with the mainland, the district called Norrmalm. The only prerequisites are basic swimming skills. A steamboat signals with its characteristic steam whistle, leaving Stadshuskajen quay and heading to Drottningholm, the summer residence of the Swedish royal family. We are a small group from around the world. As I expected, guests from the major tourist nations, such as the United States, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Switzerland, China and Japan, participate. But even a “just married” couple on honeymoon from Australia are now sitting in the kayaks and looking out at the magnificent view where Riddarfjärden Bay gleams in all its glory. The quiet water in the canal is replaced by a surface with small ripples from the breeze. It is afternoon and the wind comes from the south, something typical at this time of year. It is late summer and we have stable, clear and warm weather conditions across STHLM. The air is warm and the water is bathable if you consider 21 degrees Celsius as reasonable. In fact, it is the same water and area where people ice skate in the winter, a fact that makes the long-distance guests, currently in t-shirts, raise their eyebrows and shake their heads.

The sun reflects in the water as we paddle west. To the right, on Norr Mälarstrand seaside, lie houses built in Scandinavian functionalist architecture style, with the huge Västerbron Bridge as backdrop. We paddle on Sweden's third largest and Europe's fifth largest lake, Mälaren, which was a bay in the Baltic Sea right up to the Middle Ages, but with the land rising after the ice age ice cover left 10,000 years ago it became a lake. The water is so clean that the lake supplies water for 2.5 million people, both Stockholmers and residents of neighboring municipalities.

At Västerbron Bridge, we head south towards the islands of Reimersholme, Långholmen and Södermalm.

We see the city from an exciting angle. A little bit unexpected. A little under cover and a little bit incognito maybe? Interesting skylines everywhere. Some medieval church here, some former factories from the industrialization era there. When we reach Reimersholme we pass the place where Lars Olsson Smith founded what came

The Swedish coastline is lushly populated with archipelagos starting from North on the east coast, moving along the coast down south towards STHLM all the way around to the west coast and up north again towards Norway. The most well-known of the archipelago heavens is STHLM’s archipelago.

With more than 30,000 islands, it spans out over 80 kilometers, uniquely starting from STHLM’s city (yes, the city!) and out towards the Baltic. It’s the largest archipelago in Sweden, one of the most beautiful and largest in the world.

Explorers come here to retreat and relax, some for total island seclusion and others to celebrate or enjoy life with family and friends. To indulge in their lavish or humble summer homes or simply to disconnect from our usual faster paced lifestyles. The archipelago is divided into three areas: northern, central and southern archipelagos.

How to get there Getting to the archipelago by boat is easy. There are three different island hopping ferry lines which take you to the various areas and islands. Ferry services are available from the “Cinderella” and “Waxholmsbolaget” ferry companies. A day trip by rib boat or charter your own vessel from a yacht charter. Helicopter or seaplane trips are added value to an experience.

freely through nature even on private land but with one easy rule, “don’t disturb, don’t damage”.

Island Life The northern island hopping line will take you to the exciting, barren islands of Rödlöga and Svartlöga on the outskirts of the archipelago and charming islands like Idö to the far north. Idö has no permanent residents or cars however, it’s flora life dazzles with orchids in May, the perfect time to visit.

The central archipelago has popular destinations like Ljusterö, Möja and Grinda. Some accessible by bus or boat from STHLM like Möja, where the central and outer archipelago meet. Explore the Björndalen nature reserve forests and from May to September, you can kayak all the way to the horizon. Search for the elusive “Russian ovens”, in which Russians baked rye bread when they ravaged the archipelago in 1719 or visit the tourist office and rent a bicycle. Grinda, is just an hour from STHLM and houses Grinda Wärdshus, a world-class restaurant with overnight accommodation.

The southern archipelago will take you to popular islands like Sandhamn, Utö and Nåttarö - known for its stunning beaches, utterly undisturbed forest and grazing herds of fearless proud deer. Cosmopolitan Sandhamn is far out in the archipelago and attracts tourists who sail, offering first-class restaurants and lovely accommodation.

Explore and adventure All islands are great exploring destinations for camping, picnics, hiking, biking, mushroom and berry picking. Kayaking between islands, adventurous rib boat trips for eagle and seal safaris and a sauna and swim – very Swedish and perfect in all seasons.

When to go The archipelago can be explored all year round but if you want to experience the real magic the best times to visit are between May and September for those long summer nights… The archipelago is a world within a world, food for the soul and I can’t wait for you to explore it. Utö Utö combines culture with gorgeous experiences of nature. Large parts of the island make up a nature reserve, so its incredible environ-

ment is well protected despite its 70,000 annual visitors. Utö is one of the bigger islands in the archipelago. Its western side offers tranquil waters and pleasant outcrops, while the eastern side gives you open sea and sharp cliffs. This island also has a lot to offer, and because of its relatively bigger size, you can even rent a moped. There is an excellent range of restaurants, cafés, bakeries and accommodations.

Nåttarö A somewhat simpler, smaller and less well known island, with one of the longest beaches in the archipelago: Stora Sand. It is not quite as lively as Sandhamn or Utö, but it has a cozy pub, and many feel that it is the most beautiful island in the archipelago. Sandy beaches, peaceful meadows and virgin forests, combined with dramatic cliffs and the mighty sea.

And remember to pack your wet suit, as it’s even possible to enjoy some snorkeling!

Sandhamn A historic spot whose excellent location in the outer reaches of the archipelago has made it a popular place for summer tourists and sailors alike. The harbor is full of life in the summer months, with several restaurants, bars and cafés offering everything from a-la-carte service to take-out picnic baskets.

Because the journey out to the island takes a bit of time, and since there is so much to do, it is well worth it to book accommodations and stay for a few days. There are lots of activities to choose from. You can explore the island on your own, sunbathe and swim in the sea, try your hand at sailing and fishing, or simply kick back and enjoy the spa.

Views of Monteliusvägen This viewpoint is a hidden gem that opens onto incredibly beautiful views over the city from a height. Pick up some refreshments at one of the cafés on Blecktornsgränd, such as Café Mariaberget, A Bowl or Magnolia on the way, and enjoy whilst taking in the views. Monteliusvägen is a quaint 500-meter-long walking path that follows along the edge of Södermalm, lined with charming old-style houses and contrasting Södermalm architecture on one side and on the other side, stunning views over the lake, and the iconic City Hall and Gamla Stan.

Kärleksstigen “A lovers’ trail” Take your loved one’s hand for a romantic royal nature walk. “Kärleksstigen” translates to “A lovers’ trail” and that is exactly what it is. Located on the south of the Royal Island of Djurgården, this is a pathway in the midst of nature given to Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel by the WWF as a wedding gift. It is a romantic 390-meter-long path surrounded by beautiful diverse nature and forest with a range of wild birds and wildlife in the area. Easily accessible from Thielska Galleriet, a beautiful romantic spot for art and culture lovers.

Royal Island of Djurgården Kärleksstigen is not the only romantic place on this island, but it is so special that it deserves special mention. The entire island has an incredible number of romantic spots. Pack a picnic bag, rent a bike or walk around the island and visit these spots. Rosendals Trädgård is a beautiful greenhouse and café. Make a donation and pick some flowers for your room. Walk or bike through the area, pass the pink Rosendal Palace and follow the paths along the water where there are many places to stop for a picnic and take in the views or lie in the sun. Do a photo stop for stunning views on the Djurgårdsbron Bridge.

Sail to Drottningholm Palace & Gardens Palaces have the most pristine gardens, and this is one of Sweden’s most beautiful. Drottningholm Palace is a UNESCO Heritage Site and also the current residence of our Royal Family with much of the grounds open to the public for us all to enjoy. You can spend an entire day out here. Pack a picnic basket and hop onto a boat for a beautiful 40-minute sail through Lake Mälaren that will get you directly to the palace. Walk through the baroque gardens towards the park and find a spot to soak up the sun.

Forest Art at Artipelag Just a short drive outside the city lies a place filled with inspiration. If you are lovers of art, nature, architecture and good food, then a visit to Artipelag is a must. Indulge in their delicious brunch on the restaurant terrace with views overlooking the Archipelago. Afterwards enjoy a walk on one of their many nature art trails between the swaying pine trees or down by the marina, or view their latest art exhibition. Artipelag is accessible by bus - the bus ride from the city is free with a small fee for the return - or hop on a boat for a gorgeous sail.

Swedish Royal Museum of Natural History

Vasaparken

Astrid Lindgren lived close to Vasaparken for more than 60 years, and it is here that her characters Peter and Petra lived under a spruce tree.

Today the park boasts a modern soccer pitch with high capacity, where spectators can enjoy a sweaty match between amateur teams. In the winter time, the pitch is used as an ice rink. There is also huge park with everything for the little ones, as well as some lovely cafés and restaurants serving great food and drink, such as Guld at Sven-Harry’s Art Museum.

House of Culture

Right in the middle of STHLM lies the House of Culture. In addition to art, music, literature and theatre for adults, there is also a special space for children, with activities happening every day. You can pop in for an hour to rest a little and read some books, or spend an entire day taking part in the various activities, such as storytelling and Friday dancing. kulturhuset.se

A green oasis within the green oasis of Djurgården. There is plenty of space to stretch your legs and play games here, with activities on offer all year round. You can easily spend an entire day here. Ice rinks

THE CITY OF STHLM OPENS ITS ICE RINKS IN THE WINTER. EVEN IF THERE IS NO ICE ON THE LAKES OR SEA, YOU CAN STILL GO SKATING AT ONE OF STHLM’S ARTIFICIAL ICE RINKS. MOST RINKS OFFER ICE SKATE RENTALS, AND A NICE PLACE TO WARM UP AND ENJOY A HOT DRINK.

Kungsträdgården The ice rink at Kungträdgården is an iconic rink among STHLM residents, and perhaps the most well known. Absolutely worth a visit, even if you don’t plan on skating. Keep in mind, though, that it can sometimes get really busy here. Children, teens and adults of all abilities, from complete beginners to skilled skaters, can enjoy skating to the music and looping around the statue of King Charles XIII. And there’s almost always at least one real expert happily showing off their moves. You can rent skates and grab a drink/snack here. In addition to its festive atmosphere, this rink also boasts a close proximity to the city center, with a huge range of great bars and restaurants nearby.

Zinkensdamm IP Södermalm’s classic bandy rink, and the home rink of the Hammarby IF men’s and women’s teams, where many elite bandy matches are played to bustling crowds. Be sure to check in advance whether or not the rink is open to the public, as there are often training sessions and matches being held there.

Vasaparken A large (60 x 43 meters, or roughly 200 x 140 feet) and very popular ice rink with eco-smart cooling technology in the heart of Vasastan. Although the rink is very spacious, it can still get quite busy here. If there are too many people out on the ice, then why not warm up at GULD Restaurant in the Sven-Harry Art Museum, with great views over the park.

Östermalms IP Alongside Kungsträdgården, Östermalms IP is one of the city’s two best known ice rinks. Östermalms IP is a STHLM institution. When it was built, in 1906, it was recognized as one of the most modern sports facilities in the world. The ice rink is large and spacious, though it can still get quite busy on nice days. In addition to skate rental, there is a large grill that gets fired up at designated times.
