A Message from Tony Bavuso, CEO While 2020 was a surprising and challenging year, I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me how our team and partners rose to meet challenging times. That is what we do at Saving Sight. We demonstrate resilience, initiative, and innovation in providing care to families and stewarding the gift of restored sight from one individual to another.

Over the past 12 months, our team demonstrated resourcefulness and determination in recovering eye donor tissue for transplant by finding ways to keep stakeholders, including staff, safe and continuing to successfully operate in a healthcare system stressed by the demands of COVID-19. We quickly transitioned to home office environments for staff who could work from home. To protect essential staff who needed to stay to work in the lab, Saving Sight provided PPE and put social distancing measures in place, as carried out by its employee-driven COVID-19 task force.

While many parts of the U.S. and our service area were still on lockdown, Saving Sight staff traveled to hospitals to recover eye tissue from deceased donors for transplant. Before and after tissue donation, our team took additional steps to screen for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases regularly included in the screening process. Finally, after donor tissue was prepared for transplant in our lab, often our staff would drive to physicians’ offices, sometimes hours away, to deliver that tissue for a sight-restoring transplant.

As I look back on the great work that Saving Sight did in 2020, I can’t help but pause in appreciation of all of the people who came together during the most difficult times of our lives to help others in need.

Just as in any other year, we could not fulfill our mission of changing lives by saving sight without many partners’ help.

While COVID-19 taxed our donor hospitals and physician offices, they did not give up the fight of standing side-by-side with Saving Sight to provide the gift of sight to others. On behalf of all of the individuals that Saving Sight served in 2020, thank you for helping us provide the gift of sight to others!

Ultimately, I believe that our response to COVID-19 reflects our focus on building a strong organizational culture rooted in accountable stewardship and resilience. For years, we have put intentional work into fostering a team that values and reflects resilience as part of its mission in serving others in times of difficulty and loss. That experience allowed our team to rise up and meet others’ needs during the most difficult of times.

As we continue our work into 2021, our team has great hope for a bright future where there is healing for our world and our country. We will continue to do our part in providing healing for families suffering from loss, knowing that their loved one can be a hero that has allowed another person to see thanks to their gift of sight. We will continue to provide the utmost care in preparing that gift of sight for transplant to heal recipients. And we will continue to build an organizational culture that values people and their contribution to our mission.

Remote Teamwork During COVID-19 One of the building blocks of our culture at Saving Sight is strong, healthy teams. We believe that teams that act with great trust, accountability, and a passion for a mission can achieve great things.

During COVID-19, our team-based culture was put to the test. We no longer shared workspaces or the opportunity for a quick hallway discussion. Recognizing early on that our new normal could potentially leave us less connected, our Human Resources team and others throughout the organization prioritized new opportunities for virtual connection.

This new type of connection took on many forms, including Zoom happy hours, mission moments at staff meetings, virtual live stream hangouts with the recipients of our programs, and recognizing our teammates still in the office as essential on-site staff. Together, we offered each other support and encouragement to stay focused on the mission of helping others during the most challenging times.

Responding to a World Pandemic in 2020 When the world went on lockdown due to COVID-19 in March 2020, business as usual was changed for millions of healthcare workers, patients, and communities around the world. Like everyone, Saving Sight was deeply impacted and operations came to a near halt for weeks.

On March 17, like many other employers in the U.S., Saving Sight sent most of its staff home to work.

Some essential staff members needed to remain in the office, like our laboratory team. Other essential staff, like our recovery team, still needed to travel into hospitals to perform their work. The remainder of our staff learned to work virtually, quickly replicating office set ups at home and finding creative ways to connect as a team.

We focused all of our attention on two areas: (1) making sure we could serve patients in a safe way (2) ensuring the safety of our staff. Immediately, Saving Sight implemented regulations from the FDA and EBAA to screen for and rule out any potential donor cases with COVID-19 or suspected exposure to the virus. We continued to meet the demand of our corneal transplant physicians and their patients, ensuring tissue safety and contactless delivery prior to surgery.

In order to protect our essential in-office staff, we instituted daily health checks, social distancing measures, and mandatory N95 masking when social distancing could not be achieved. Because we care so deeply for our mission and the wellbeing of our teammates, we took many additional precautions to avoid in-office exposures, including installing plexiglass barriers and regular disinfecting of surfaces.

While 2020 was a year that challenged us all and our conventional ways of working, Saving Sight is proud to have continued to meet the needs of the communities we serve while keeping our team safe.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS Saving Sight joins with a variety of partners in our community because we cannot do this life changing work alone. We rely on volunteers, Medical Examiners/Coroners, Lions Clubs, and Donate Life teams to help sustain and accomplish our sight saving mission.

In prior years, our outreach efforts have centered on community events, but due to COVID-19, we have had to seek out innovative new approaches to connecting and sharing our message. The continued dedication of these individuals and organizations in these unprecedented times has enabled us to bring cohesion and solidarity to our service area at home and around the world.

Local Coroner Connects Families to Gift of Sight in Moments of Darkness As Taney County Coroner, Tony Mullen is no stranger to difficult and often emotionally taxing situations. From doing investigative work at death scenes and conducting autopsies, to notifying the next of kin of a death, his job is demanding and often misunderstood. But Mullen is determined to bring the hope that accompanies organ, eye, and tissue donation to the community he serves in their times of loss.

As a county coroner, Mullen is in a unique position to work with donation agencies like Saving Sight when a death occurs to offer donation as an option in many cases. He is also committed to providing resources to help his community better understand the donation process.

COVID-19 and Community Events

When COVID-19 reached Missouri mid-March, it was a mere two weeks from the start of National Donate Life month, the organ, eye, and tissue donation community’s most eventful time of the year. Groups rushed to cancel all in person celebrations and receptions and to find innovative ways to still recognize and honor those who had given the gift of life and sight.

Donate Life Missouri along with the Governor’s Organ Donor Advisory Committee, who organize the annual Donor Family Recognition Day at the Missouri State Capitol, made a quick pivot to create a video for donor families with the customary name reading ceremony as well as prerecorded speakers, including Missouri Governor Mike Parson.

Cornea Recipient, Chris Orr was originally scheduled as one of the speakers at the Capitol event. “I understood the circumstance, but I was disappointed the event was cancelled in April. I grew up going to the capitol and had looked forward to speaking at the event,” Orr said.

That disappointment was felt worldwide, but throughout the remainder of 2020, Saving Sight found inventive new ways to connect with our volunteers, program recipients, and community partners. We conducted audio interviews, created thank you videos for our healthcare and hospital partners with content submitted by program recipients, and even tried our hand at livestreaming events.

Saving Sight’s Giving Tuesday Streamathon lasted a full 12 hours and featured nine interviews with Saving Sight staff, donor families, and cornea recipients including Chris Orr. “I thoroughly enjoyed doing the virtual interview. I look forward to more opportunities to help Saving Sight. There are people out there that need to hear my story.”

As we move into 2021 with no sign of in person events returning, we hope to build on the ideas and experiences gained in this truly unprecedented year to continue to create new opportunities for connection and engagement with the community we serve. PROGRAM RECIPIENTS As a nonprofit with a mission to change lives by saving sight, our organization is committed to serving our program recipients. From honoring the gift of sight from donor families, to distributing corneal tissue for life-changing transplants for cornea recipients, to helping other individuals suffering from debilitating eye disease, every department at Saving Sight works with the goal in mind of serving these populations. To achieve this, we focus on excellence in eye banking operations and accountable stewardship. Though 2020 proved challenging in many ways and our operations had to adapt, our dedication to our mission and sight-restoration helped us serve a record number of individuals.

Restored Vision Takes Carol to New Heights “One of my favorite things to do is swing on the 10-foot-tall swing in my backyard,” says Carol. “I go on it every day – It’s my relaxation and my mediation.”

After years of battling the progressive eye disease Fuchs Dystrophy, Carol realized she needed to have surgery and scheduled an appointment during the middle of the pandemic with Dr. Cavanaugh.

“Not only is he experienced and efficient with DSAEK corneal transplantation, but he was able to do simultaneous cataract and corneal procedures.”

After Carol’s corneal transplant surgery, Dr. Cavanaugh said she had a “super donor” explaining that at birth the cornea has 3,000 cells and at death it’s usually around 2,000.

Her donor’s cornea had 2,900 cells – and Carol’s diseased cornea had virtually none.

“You can imagine because of that it was a miracle for me. Within 2 to 3 days of the surgery I was seeing better than I ever had and I was still healing. I was like a kid who just woke up from a black and white dream. Brighter, clearer and truer.”

Carol had her second cornea transplant in August. “I can never thank Dr. Cavanaugh or the donor enough for this second lease I have on life. This was a 100 percent uplifting experience for me during the worst pandemic of our lifetime.”

Virtual Legacy Garden Honors Eye Donors In 2020, 2,395 heroes gave the gift of sight through eye donation with Saving Sight. As another way to celebrate our donors and their families, Saving Sight launched the Virtual Legacy Garden in May. A virtual memorial is an online space created to remember those who have passed and we hope our legacy garden will bloom for years to come. This served as an additional way to remember and honor our donors, especially in a year of limited human interaction.

We encouraged donor families to contribute their own garden themed photos in remembrance of their loved ones, along with a special story or quote to be memorialized in the Legacy Garden on our Instagram page.

As a business partner and cofounder of Vital Tears, Saving Sight is proud to serve as the processor for all Vital Tears orders. Vital Tears is the leader in autologous serum eye drops (ASEDs), more commonly known as serum tears. We we offer a quick, hassle-free, and affordable way to obtain serum tears. We empower patients who suffer from ocular surface conditions with access to these critical eye drops.

Since 2015, we have provided Vital Tears to patients in the United States looking to treat their ocular surface conditions.

As one patient shared with us, “Vital Tears just makes the whole process easy. It’s changed my life actually. I think the billing is very transparent and easy to understand. It’s nice there are several options.”

Cheryl Shares Her Brother’s Legacy as an Eye Donor During National Donate Life Month in April, Cheryl joined Saving Sight for an audio interview to share about her connection to organ, eye and tissue donation and her brother’s legacy as an eye donor.

Scot’s legacy began as living kidney donor for Cheryl in 1997. “For him, it was something that he could do to really help me but also just to show his character and to do something so positive. Kidney donation was such an important thing in our family, and donation in general is just so near and dear to our hearts, that we wanted Scot’s legacy to include giving life to others even after he had passed.”

Cheryl says Scot’s legacy lives on as a donor. “I imagine another person being able to see because of Scot. Two people have gone from living in darkness to a window being opened where they can see so many things.” Listen to Cheryl’s story.

HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS Saving Sight often says, “together, we change lives by saving sight.” This is so true because our work in honoring the gift of sight cannot be done without the valuable partnerships we have, especially in the healthcare community. Staff at our donor hospitals enable us to procure tissue and honor the donor’s wishes to give the gift of sight. Our partnerships with transplant surgeons and other eye care professionals allow us to then distribute corneal tissue for transplantation so a recipient’s vision can be saved. Saving Sight serves this community by educating on our mission, partnering to best serve families and patients.

Champion of Donation – Chaplain Dan Mefford Dan Mefford has served as a Chaplain for Mosaic Life Care Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri for 30 years.

“Part of my role here, as all of ours are, is to respond to all end-of-life care crises,” says Chaplain Dan. “We are a part of what they’re going through and are there for the families as well.”

As the lead chaplain for Mosaic Life Care’s ER and ICU, Chaplain Dan is involved with both Midwest Transplant Network and Saving Sight in the donation process.

“Our connection is really one of partnership. We try to be the liaison to help Saving Sight and Midwest Transplant Network through the process.”

“Chaplain Dan is such an incredible advocate for donation,” says Darcey Ross, Hospital Development Manager at Saving Sight.

“Not only for the individuals who have made the decision to donate, but he is such a source of comfort for the grieving family members as well.”

“I’ve seen the lives that are changed through donation,” says Chaplain Dan. “It sends shivers down your spine to see how much it means to the family in their grief to donate – it’s a healing experience for those who are grieving.”

Eye Donation Month 2020 Each November, Saving Sight joins the Eye Bank Association of American and the eye banking community to celebrate Eye Donation Month. This annual observance serves as an opportunity for eye banks, partners, and communities to commemorate the lives of individuals who have given vision to others through eye donation. This year’s theme was “A Community of Compassion” and it highlighted the many individuals who work together to make restored vision through transplantation possible.

“A Community of Compassion” turned out to be the perfect theme this year as we continued to navigate the world of healthcare during a global pandemic. Typically, our Hospital Development team uses November as an opportunity to visit with our clinical partners in-person to express our gratitude for their partnership and work in the journey of the gift of sight. This year, things looked a lot different and all in-person visits and presentations had to be canceled.

We knew that 2020 had been a difficult year for healthcare workers around the globe and we wanted to be sure to find ways to thank them for being excellent stewards of donation while facing unrelenting challenges. To accomplish this, we created a video with a message of gratitude from our Hospital Development Team, donor families, and cornea recipients to thank those who facilitate the act of eye donation and transplantation in our health care systems.

We hoped to share a positive message of a legacy living on through sight restoration with our partners.

Carol, a Kansas corneal transplant recipient, had this to say about her transplants during the pandemic: “I’m the recent recipient of two corneal transplant surgeries, both during COVID-19. I appreciate all our healthcare providers so much and everyone who has helped restore my sight and all of our health during this difficult time, thank you.”

In addition to the gratitude video, we also shared stories on our social media channels throughout the month that highlight why the work we do each day is so important to our program recipients and donor families. As another way of finding innovative ways to share our mission during unprecedented times, Saving Sight launched its first ever Livestream on Facebook to honor the legacy of donor hero John Lefferts and to talk with his parents Larry and Vivian about his legacy, and their volunteer work and advocacy.

RESEARCH & ACADEMICS Partnering to Find Cures & Treatments for Debilitating Eye Diseases & Blindness Saving Sight is dedicated to partnering with the ocular research and academic communities to help find cures and treatments for debilitating eye disease and blindness. For decades, strong collaborative partnerships between eye banks and researchers have pushed our work forward to help more people. We’re proud to support various ocular research projects and serve as partners in learning and practice for new ophthalmologists beginning their careers.

Saving Sight offers a variety of tissue processing services to meet the needs of our surgical and research partners. We follow the most rigorous standards to ensure tissue meets the specific guidelines needed for transplant. All tissue is stored, processed and distributed according to the FDA, Good Tissue Practices 21 CFR 1271, and EBAA medical standards. Researcher Gary Peh, Singapore Eye Research Institute Saving Sight has partnered with Dr. Peh since 2016 to distribute tissues for his research endeavors. The main scope of the Singapore Eye Research Institute’s research involves the isolation and propagation of human corneal endothelial cells in order to better understand cellular biology. Ultimately, the knowledge gained through the research will be applied towards the development of a tissue-engineered corneal endothelial graft material for the treatment of corneal blindness.

Introducing the Next Generation of Ophthalmologists to Eye Banking For decades, Saving Sight has shared close partnerships with academic institutions and ophthalmology programs in its service area. Our team looks for opportunities to connect with future medical professionals and ophthalmologists to introduce them to the eye bank and its processes. While 2020 certainly saw less opportunity for face-to-face connection, our team was able to provide video presentations and connect in new ways with students.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Board of Directors The Saving Sight Board of Directors provides crucial oversight to help us achieve our organizational goals. The Board actively participates in long-range planning and works to secure financial resources to support our sight-saving mission in the areas of corneal donation and transplantation and ASED processing. As highly visible members of their communitites, board members also enhance Saving Sight’s public standing by sharing the mission, accomplishments, and goals with the general public, Lions clubs, and other partner organizations.

This year, our Board met through Zoom calls and virtual meetings to stay connected and provide oversight during COVID-19. Near or far, in person or through a computer screen, our Board is dedicated to our mission to change lives by saving sight.

Pat Martchink, Board President How long have you served on the Saving Sight Board and in what roles? I am in my fifth year on the Board. One year as a member, one year as Secretary, and now in my third year as President.

Why is it impactful for you to serve on the Saving Sight Board? I have worked professionally in nonprofits for more than 35 years and I believe it is a noble cause.

My father was blind for a part of his life so I understand the importance of Saving Sight’s mission. I believe in the idea of “service” and being a part of Saving Sight helps me to fulfill that idea.

How does the Board function to support Saving Sight’s mission to change lives by saving sight? The Board helps to provide the “big picture” for the agency and then supports leadership to move the agency in that direction.
