We change lives by saving sight. That’s our mission. From screening children to prevent vision loss, to recycling eyeglasses for those in need, to coordinating eye donation for transplant to restore sight, our dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly each day toward this cause. We’re committed to saving sight because we know how much one’s life can change when they are able to see. We were reminded of that this year by a few recipients whose stories illustrated just how impactful the gift of sight can be. Barbara’s sight was restored through a corneal transplant allowing her to continue training future educators and volunteering with the American Red Cross. Thanks to a KidSight screening, 4-year old Jayce got his nearsightedness treated, helping him see to learn in school. Around the world in Senegal, a pair of glasses provided through our Eyeglass Recycling Program helped Kadidja read clearly for the first time in her life as she entered college. If there is anything more inspiring than these stories of lives changed you’ll read in this year’s report, it’s knowing there are more than 100,000 stories just like them from 2015-2016. The lives of more than 100,000 people just like Barbara, Jayce and Kadidja were changed last year because of the support we receive from those who believe in our mission to save sight. The generosity of eye donors and their families, commitment of hospital and surgeon partners, support from financial sustainers and dedication of volunteers made it possible for people of all ages to see more clearly last year. With your help, together we can ensure more children can see the blackboard, more parents can watch their children grow and more grandparents can maintain independent ways of life in the coming year. Renew your commitment to this mission and support our work with a gift at circleofsight.org. What better way could there be to enhance the life of another than by helping to give the gift of sight?

MEET BARBARA As a lifelong Missourian, Barbara knows the impact natural disasters can have on the lives of children. That’s why after a career in the classroom, she visits schools as an American Red Cross volunteer to teach kids about emergency preparedness. But, after living with Fuch’s dystrophy for nearly two decades, her failing eyesight threatened her ability to continue making a difference. Thanks to the generosity of an eye donor, Saving Sight provided tissue for a cornea transplant that has allowed Barbara to continue serving her community. “It’s kind of miraculous,” Barbara said of her cornea transplant. “My eyes were deteriorating so [the transplant] made a big difference in what I am able to do. It’s so cool to look at things and see them clearly. It’s something you don’t really realize how important it is until it’s gone.”

MEET JAYCE As the mother of a rambunctious four-yearold, Tracy didn’t notice her son Jayce was having trouble seeing. But when a KidSight vision screening at Jayce’s early childhood center detected Jayce may have a vision problem, she took action right away. Referral information Tracy received from KidSight detailed Jayce’s screening results and connected her to kid-friendly eye doctors in her area. She quickly took Jayce for a full eye exam and got his nearsightedness corrected. Now, Jayce asks for his glasses as soon as he wakes up in the morning. Tracy has noticed Jayce has an easier time recognizing letters and is writing more clearly. Jayce’s teachers also report he’s doing more work at school. “KidSight’s a great program,” Tracy said. “Jayce wouldn’t have glasses, and I wouldn’t have known he couldn’t see very well, had it not been for KidSight.”

MEET KADIDJA Throughout her life, Kadidja had maintained strong focus in school. She studied hard, but difficulty seeing was making it harder for her to succeed in the classroom. Her mother took her to the eye doctor, and Kadidja was prescribed glasses. Unfortunately, they couldn’t afford the prescription. As Kadidja prepared to enter college, struggling to read, nonprofit Weer Africa sponsored a health screening day in her hometown of Bambilor, Senegal. Kadidja excitedly went to the screening and received her first pair of corrective lenses thanks to Saving Sight’s Eyeglass Recycling Program. “You could see the joy on her face. It’s very rewarding how one pair of glasses will make her life better,” said Fatou Faye, President of Weer Africa. “I’m going to college now,” Kadidja said as she put her glasses on. “I will do much better this year.”
VOLUNTEERS This year, volunteers who dedicated their time and talent to our mission made it possible for our sight-saving programs to change the lives of more than ever before. Committed individuals who believe in our work dedicated 586 hours to our Eyeglass Recycling Program and 386 hours to our KidSight Vision Screening Program in 2015-2016.
Thanks to a grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation and matching gifts from local supporters, Saving Sight opened the Lions Volunteer Center in Columbia, Missouri in October 2015. The center allows volunteers to engage in our mission hands-on by processing used glasses for recycling to help those see who might not otherwise have access to glasses.
LONGTIME VOLUNTEER SCREENS 50,000th CHILD Saving Sight established its statewide KidSight Vision Screening Program in 1995 with the help of Wayne Henderson, a Past International Director of Lions Clubs International. When he passed away a short time later, his wife Becky started volunteering to screen children through the program as a way to honor Wayne’s legacy. Sixteen years later, she’s still volunteering every week and screened the vision of her 50,000th child in September as a regular KidSight volunteer.

YOUR GIFT CHANGES LIVES BY SAVING SIGHT While the largest portion of Saving Sight’s revenue comes as a result of eye bank operations, our charitable vision programs rely on generous financial supporters to continue serving our communities. Our KidSight and Eyeglass Recycling programs, with budgets totaling nearly $630,000 in 2015-2016, were made possible by individuals, organizations and institutions committed to our mission to change lives by saving sight.
