홍순명 전을 열며 소설 <참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움>으로 널리 알려진 소설가 밀란 쿤데라는 이렇게 주장합니다. ‘뛰어난 예술작품은 인간의 숨겨진 본성을 발견하고 인식하게 만든다. 그 것은 판단을 내리거나 진리를 부르짖지도 않는다. 질문하고 탐색하고 놀라게 한다.’ 좋은 예술작품은 우리가 익숙하게 받아드리는 상식이나 관습, 또는 진리라고 믿는 것들에 대해 질문을 던지고 스스로 해답을 찾게 한다는 뜻이지요. 홍순명의 작품을 보면서 밀란 쿤데라의 주장을 머릿속에 떠올렸습니다. 사비나미술관(2012년 11월 7일~12월 9일)에 전시된 그의 작품들은 ‘회화란 이런 것이다’ 라는 고정관념을 전복시키고 의문을 제기하기 때문이죠. 관객들은 전시제목 그대로 세상의 또 다른 이면, 즉 사이드스케이프(SIDESCAPE)를 보게 될 것입니다. 그리고 자신이 미처 인식하지 못했던 것들을 새롭게 발견하고 인식하는 시간을 갖게 되겠지요. 우리는 그런 작품을 가리켜 ‘세상을 바라보는 관점을 바꿔주는 힘을 지녔다’라고 말하곤 합니다.

탈상투화된 풍경과 이미지의 치유 심 상 용 l 미술사학 박사, 동덕여자대학교 교수

풍경의 회복, 사건의 치유 홍순명의 ‘사이드 스케이프(Sidescape)’로 명명되는 회화는 우리가 알고 있는 스테레오타입 한 풍경화에 대한 새로운 관점을 제기한다. 전통적인 풍경화도 결국 임의의 방식으로 잘려진 자연을 재현한 것에 불과하다는 게 그것이다. 풍경화 역시 구도니 구성이니 하는 당대 적 규범에 따라, 시야에 포착되는 전체에서 산과 나무, 길이나 집 같은 일부를 선택해 주어진 틀(frame) 안에 집어넣은, 부분적으로 선 별된 것들의 조합형식일 뿐이라는 것이다. 맞는 말이다. 모든 풍경화는 예외없이 단지 잘려나간 세계와 파편화된 자연을 자신 안에 포 섭해 들인 결과일 뿐이다. 그렇더라도, 홍순명의 분할된, 또는 잘려나간 풍경인 Sidescape를 별도의 설명 없이 통상적인 풍경화의 범주에 소속시킬 수는 없다.

Sidescape는 이미 잘려지고 파편화된 결과인 경치(scape)를 재 절단 해 내고 재 파편화 한 것으로, 여기서 경치는 훨씬 더 입자화 되고 노골적으로 부분에 충실하다는 점에서 풍경화의 그것과는 현저하게 구분된다.(풍경화는 언제나 자신이 전체를 다룬 것처럼 연출한다) 무 엇보다 이 입자화 된 경치를 일반적인 풍경화의 그것과 차별시키는 요인은 인식기제와의 상관성에 있다. 일반적인 풍경화가 자연을 인 식 가능한 차원으로 유입시키기 위한 과정의 산물이었던 반면, 그것의 절단된 부분만을 취하는 Sidescape는 오히려 대상-풍경이건 사 건이건-을 인식의 범주를 벗어나거나 인식 이전의 상태로 되돌려 보내는 결과를 초래하기 때문이다. Sidescape는 경치가 마침내 풍경 의 의무에서 해방되는 곳이자, 사건이 내용의 압박에서 자유로워지는 장소인 것이다. 홍순명의 Sidescape 회화는 하나의 이미지에서 부분만 발췌해 그린 풍경이다. 잘리거나 파편화 된, 일테면 모자라거나 불구인 풍경이다. 하지만 이 이미지의 출처는 실제 자연이거나 사건이 아니라 또 다른 이미지다. 여기서 자연은 ‘변덕스런 날씨를 걱정하며 화구를 챙겨 밖 으로 나가지 않아도’ 되며, 인터넷이나 매스컴에서 원할 때는 언제나 포획 가능한 자연이다. 사건도 같은 맥락의 사건이다. Sidescape가 택한 사건들은 예컨대 날아다니는 총탄들 사이에서나 화재의 현장에서 죽음을 불사한 채 채집한 것들이 아니다. 그 모든 것들의 출처는 단지 이미지일 뿐이다. 그것들은 역사의 뜨거운 지평에서가 아니라 보도사진으로부터 온 것들이다. 그렇더라도, 홍순명에게 이미지들의 내용은 그것이 무엇이건 관심 밖이다. 때로 그것들은 역사적 전환점이 될 만한 심각한 내용이거나 매 우 중요한 정치적 사건일 수도 있다. 이미지의 원본이 자주 전쟁이나 재해, 논쟁을 불러일으키는 상황이나 불행한 사고와 결부되어 있는 것도 사실이다. 하지만 사건 자체는 전혀 중요하지 않다. 그것이 무엇이건 모두 중립적인 풍경화의 모티브로서 동등하게 취급될 뿐이다. 작가는 오히려 사건 자체가 아니라 사건의 해체와 그 해체로부터 비로소 발생하는 미적 도약의 가능성에 관심을 가지고 있다. 내용에 가 려져 인식되기 어려운, 사건 안에 잠복해 있는 잠재태로서의 미(美) 말이다. 사건에서 풍경을 발견하는 이 과정, 끔찍한 전장과 재앙의

현장에서 저주와 불행이 제거된 찬연한 빛을 발췌해내는 과정이야말로 화가가 이미지의 차원에서 실행할 수 있는 최선의 상징적 치유조 치가 아니고 무엇이겠는가? 작가는 무겁고 어두운 사건에서 조용하고 평화로우며 안식의 정서를 허용하는 회화를 추출해낸다. 이 과정 은 악취가 나는 범죄에서 절망과 증오의 뇌관을 제거하고, 전쟁으로 치닫는 논쟁에서 정치적 민감성을 완화하는 치유와 화해의 상징적 과정이다. 이에는 인쇄매체나 인터넷 안에서 비인간적인 정치, 사회적 사건과 결부된 채 속박되어 있는 이미지들을 그 속박의 올가미로 부터 구제해내는 상징성도 함께 내포되어 있다. 다행스럽게도 작가에 의해 선택된 몇몇 이미지들은 마치 쉰틀러 리스트에 그 이름을 올 린 유태인들처럼 끔찍한 비극 속에 처박히는 신세를 모면할 수 있을 것이다. 역사의 치유, 사건과 풍경의 화해, 그리고 보도사진의 이미지를 그것이 연루된 정치적, 사회적 진흙탕으로부터 구제해내기 위해, Sidescape의 시선은 사진의 중심에서 변두리로 이동한다. 다음 과정은 사건의 일부를 선별해내는 것인데, 그 기준은 미량이라도 전체의 맥 락을 공유하면서도 충분히 단절적일 수 있는 변증적인 것이어야 한다는 것이다. 그렇게 해서 선별되고 채집된 부분은 형태적 확대와 회 화적인 묘사를 거쳐, 그 사건과 변증적으로 결부된 하나의 독립적인 풍경화로 거듭난다. 이렇듯 Sidescape는 사건들을 그것들의 정치 적, 사회적 맥락으로부터 탈구시키는 미적 전략으로서, 이미지의 분절 과정에 의해 보도적 성격이 해체되고 풍경으로 재구성된다. 이는 사건 내에 잠재해 있던 다른 풍경의 가능성을 발현시키는 것이고, 그 자체로는 아무 것도 아닌 중립의 세계에 미(美)와 생명을 불어넣는 과정이다. 이야말로 예술 본연의 임무가 아니던가.

탈 상투화 된 풍경 홍순명의 Sidescape가 시행하는 잘라내기는 풍경을 파손하거나 해체하는 것과는 무관하다. Sidescape의 궁극은 풍경화의 부정이 아니 라 그것의 회복에 있다. 그리고 풍경의 내부에 잠재된 풍경, 사건의 내부에 감춰진 탈사건의 미학을 드러내는, 잘려나간 이미지의 풍경 화적 가능성을 실험하는 것에 있다. 전체에서 떨어져 나와 입자화 된 작은 것들은 전혀 상투적이지 않은 다른 풍경의 지표들 같다. ‘끊임 없는 독백으로 이루어진’, 또는 침묵의 연속만이 화법이 되는 소설의 페이지들 같기도 하다. 그 하나하나에서 예컨대 ‘곤하게 잠들다’나 ‘ 지쳐 골아 떨어졌다’ 같은 상투어를 차용하는 대신, 잠들 때 떠오르는 이미지를 무려 30페이지에 걸쳐 하나하나 복원해냈던 프르스트적 글쓰기를 목격하는 것도 가능한 일이다. 그것들이 여백에 의해서만 이야기의 연결이 가능한 고립된 단어들 같아 보이는 것도 같은 맥락 이다. 홍순명은 이 충족되지 못하는 잠재적 대화야말로 회화의 고유한 대화방식이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있다. “우리의 삶이 그러하듯이 그림은 아주 자주 논리에서 벗어난다. 애매함 투생이로 범벅이 되어 있는 그림이라는 것이 글의 논리 속에 들 어가는 순간 그 그림은 빛이 약해진다. 그리고 세속적으로는 유명해 지기 시작한다.”(홍순명) Sidescape들이 수평이나 수직으로 이웃하면서 하나의 세계를 만드는 과정은 그래서 더욱 흥미롭다. 그것들은 아직 완전히 편집되거나 검열되지 않은, 하나의 상투적인 풍경화로 호출되기 이전의 열려 있고 꿈틀거리는 풍경화를 구성해내기 때문이다. 이러한 탈상투적 풍 경화법으로 인해 홍순명의 그림은 상투적인 소통의 규범에 대한 도전으로 인식될 수 있다. 의도되고 계획된, 안락함이 결여된 불순한 소통으로 말이다. 작가 자신도 이러한 이유로 자신의 그림이 불친절하다는 사실을 충분히 인식하고 있다. 하지만 그 불친절함은 사람들 을 상투성의 덫에 빠트림으로써 진정한 자신의 시간을 잃어버리도록 인도하는, 친절을 가장한 상투성보다 훨씬 더 좋은 소통을 성취해 낼 것이 분명하다.

Recovery of the Landscape and Healing of the Accident Hong, Soun’s painting called Sidescape suggests a new perspective on landscape art which is stereotypical landscapes as we know.

His view of the traditional landscape is that it is merely a visual representation of a specific scene in nature using an arbitrary method. A landscape is a combination of various components (such as mountains, trees, streets, and houses) which the artist’s eye plucks from the environment and puts into a frame according to the composition and formation which is considered to be acceptable at the time. That’s right-- without an exception, all landscapes are merely the result of a union of a cropped worldview interspersed with fragments of nature which have been brought into one’s frame.

Hong’s segmented or fragmented landscape Sidescape cannot be included in the conventional landscape genre without any additional explanation. Sidescape is a secondary result of a segmented and fragmented landscape which has been re-segmented and re-fragmented. Here, the obvious distinction between his painting and the conventional landscape genre comes from the fact that Sidescape internally contains many more components and divisions. To the viewer, it is immediately obvious that his painting focuses on specific objects and parts, whereas landscapes are composed with the intention and purpose of depicting an entire scene. One of the primary reasons why fragmented scenery is different from a conventional landscape has to do with the cognitive mechanism. While a conventional landscape is a product of a process that brings nature into a perceivable field of view, the Sidescape shows only the fragmented parts of nature, and actually sends the object-- whether it’s a scene or an event-- beyond the range of perception and allows it to return to the state it was in before it was perceived. The Sidescape is a realm where the duty of a landscape is unbound and the essence of the event is liberated from the pressure of its contents.

Hong, Soun’s Sidescape painting is a landscape which is composed of excerpts from a part of one image; it is a cropped, fragmented, deficient landscape. However, the source of this image is another image, not an actual scene in nature or an actual event.

In his painting, nature is not an unpredictable force. It is a contained element, similar to the way that information from internet or mass media can be captured and consumed at any time by any person. The event depicted in his painting is in a similar context.

The events that Sidescape has chosen are not something that the artist has collected while risking his life in the middle of a war on some deadly battlefield. The source of all those events is just a series of images. The source comes not from the origin of the events’, but from news footage of those events.

The stories of the images, whatever they are, are not the focus of the work to Hong. Sometimes, they could be a historical turning point or an important political event. In fact, the original photo of an image is often related to war, a disaster, a controversial incident, or an unfortunate accident. However, the event itself is not important at all. Whatever it is, it is equally treated as a motive of the neutral landscape.

Hong is interested in the de-construction of an event and the possibility of the aesthetic upheaval that results from the deconstruction rather than the event itself. In other words, it is about the beauty as a potential form which is difficult to recognize because it is laid under the event and obscured by its contents. The process of discovering scenery from the events as well as the process of finding the splendid lights which survived curse and misfortune from tragic battlefields and disaster are the best forms of symbolic healing treatment, are they not? Hong extracts these events into a painting which gives a calm, peaceful, and relaxing state of mind from an image that originated from heavy and dark events. This process eliminates the root cause of despair and hatred from horrific crimes and symbolizes the healing and reconciliation which eases sensitive political tensions that stem from the conflict. It also symbolizes the rescue of repressed images in the media and internet which are tangled with inhuman politics and social events. Fortunately, a few images selected by Hong will be spared from a terrible and tragic fate, and will be preserved as a part of his artwork.

To heal history, reconcile event and scenery, and rescue the image from the news footage of the bloody, muddy political and social mess, the perspective of the Sidescape shifts from the center of the photography to its fringe. The next step is selecting individual parts of the event. The standard of selection is that any piece, regardless of size, must share the context of the entire situation while disconnecting itself from the situation at the same time; it should be dialectical. Then, the selected and gathered parts go through a process of enlargement and painterly depiction, and are then remade as an independent landscape which is connected to the event dialectically. As you can see, the Sidescape is the aesthetic strategy which dismembers the events from the political and social context. The journalistic trait is de-constructed and re-constructed as the landscape through the process of image fragmentation; it is a process which fetches out the potential of the image hidden in the events and gives the beauty and life to the void in the world of neutralism. Is this not the very duty of Art?

Unconventional Landscape Hong’s cropping method used in Sidescape is irrelevant to the destruction or deconstruction of scenery. A fundamental objective of the Sidescape is in its recovery of the scene, not a denial. Its objective is also to reveal the aesthetic of the event hidden at its center and to examine the potential of imagery that has been cropped from the scene to see if it can be a landscape by itself. The particle which is detached and fragmented from the whole is like an indicator of other scenery, which is not at all a conventional way of perceiving a landscape. It’s like a chapter of a novel whose expression is a ‘consists of endless monologue’ or is a ‘continuation of silence’. It is reminiscent of Proust’s writing, which allocates thirty pages to the listing of images which come across the

character’s mind before falling into sleep instead of using a typical description, such as ‘fell asleep like a rock’ or ‘dropped like a log.’ Like Proust’s isolated and irrelevant words which made the story seem coherent when we read between the lines, Hong’s painting conveys a meaning when we “read between” its lines. Hong is well aware of the fact that this unsatisfactory and indirect conversation is the original method of the painting.

“Like our lives always do, a painting gets off the track of logic. As a painting, which is riddled with full of uncertainties, is interpreted in a logical constructs of a critic, the light of the painting fades away. Then, it becomes famous in a secular world.” (Hong, Soun) Hence, the process of creating a unified world composed of a series of the Sidescapes by horizontal and vertical arrangements is much more interesting. They are neither edited nor censored. Because they create the open-ended and writhing landscape before becoming one of the conventional landscapes. Through such unconventional landscape, Hong’s painting could be recognized as a challenge to the conventional model of communication. In other words, it could be seen as an intended, fabricated, uncomfortable and also impure communication. Hong himself knows the fact that his painting is unkind because of these reasons. However, such unkindness will lead people to better communication by freeing them from the binds of conventionalism and helping them realize that this conventionalism will make them lose their own time by offering pretentious kindness.

꿈꿀 권리 : 초상화 시리즈 김 미 진 l 홍익대학교 미술대학원 교수, 기획·비평

홍순명은 회화, 판화, 설치, 사진, 조각, 비디오 등 다양한 매체를 다루고 다시 그 입체적이고 총체적인 형식을 가장 기본인 평면 안에 표현하 며 미술사적 전통을 이어가고 있다.

10여 년 간 해오고 있는 사이드스케이프 시리즈가 이미지의 부분으로 이 세상의 전체 풍경을 그려내는 작업이라면 <꿈꿀 권리>는 초상화 시 리즈다. 체코의 집시, 산타페의 인디언, 한국의 다문화 가정 등 그가 전시하는 곳의 문화소외지역 아이들과 함께 만드는 꿈꾸는 인물은 아이 들의 미래의 자화상부터 만화 주인공이나 아바타, 추상적인 형태까지 지금 현실과는 다른 그들만의 상상적 대상이다. 예측할 수 없는 순수한 상상력의 아이들 초벌 그림은 작가가 찍은 그들의 얼굴사진 위에 오버랩 되어 약간의 미적 교정을 거친 후 사진으로 완성된다. 성당, 학교, 미술관 등 전시공간에 적합한 재료를 선택하고 설치되는 초상 시리즈는 작가 혼자만이 그려내는 천재적 개념의 회화성 보다는 인물의 대상 과 작가와 보는 사람 모두가 참여하는 공공의 장, 즉 상호작용 안에서 완성되는 예술이다. 원초적이며 코드화되지 않은 순수한 영혼은 상호 작용의 장소에서 관람자의 상상과 함께 발견되고 이입되어 예술적 소통으로 완성된다. 아이들의 사회적 정체성, 회화의 시선, 사진의 회화성 등 매체의 미묘한 잠재적 미적 상태를 내뿜으며 다양한 예술의 꿈꿀 권리를 환기시킨다.

The Right to Dream : Portrait Series Kim, Mijin l Professor, Fine Art Department, Hongik University, Exhibition Plan·Critic Hong, Soun has been exploring a variety of mediums including painting, printing, installation, photography, sculpture and video. By bringing the three-dimensional works and forms as a whole back to the basic canvas, he carries on the art historical legacy.

If we consider that the artwork Sidescape series, which he has been working on for the last ten years, depicts the entire scenery of this world by using the fragmented image, The Right to Dream is a portrait series. He has been exhibited Gypsy in the Czech Republic, Indian in Santa Fe, and multi-cultured family in Korea. This series depicts the figures who the participating children from culturally less-favored areas dreamed about. They are imaginary figures in children’s dreams, ranging from future self portrait, comic book heroes, avatars, to abstract figures which are different than today’s reality. The children’s rough paintings showing their unpredictable and pure imagination are overlapped on the portraits of children which the artist Hong has taken. Then, the work is completed as photography after Hong edits them expressively and prints them out. Depending on the exhibition space such as a church, school, and museum, he chooses proper materials and installs the portrait series. It is the art of collaboration in which the objects (children), artist, and viewer are all participated and completed by interactions with the participants, rather than the work of a lone artist which emphasizes the artist’s genuine talent. Children’s intuitive and pure spirit is transferred to the field of interaction and is thus discovered and shared with viewers through the power of imagination. The work is completed by this artistic communication. The potential beauty comes from children’s social identities, the perspective of the painting, and painterly quality of the photograph and such variety is reminiscent of the right of art.
