강운 전을 열며

강운은 구름의 화가로 불립니다. 이런 별명을 갖게 된 데는 두 가지 이유가 있습니다.

20여 년 동안 구름을 주제로 탐구하고 있는데다 그의 이름이 구름 운(雲)이기 때문입니다. 구름은 일정한 형태가 없기에 그림으로 표현하는 일이 말처럼 쉽지 않습니다. 공기의 흐름, 바람결, 자연의 에너지를 화폭에 구현해야 하는 어려움도 따릅니다. 작가는 오랜 실험과 연구 끝에 강운 표 구름 화풍을 개발했습니다. 특유의 재료와 기법을 간략하게 소개해드리자면 공기의 흐름을 표현하고자 자연에서 채취한 천연염료로 물들인 한지를 캔버스에 붙여 배경의 하늘을 만들고 그 위에 마름모꼴 한지를 조각조각 붙여 부조와 같은 효과를 냅니다. 중국의 목판화 기법의 하나인 수인목판화 기법을 응용해 물의 움직임을 다양한 색채로 표현합니다. 하필 구름을 그린 의도가 무엇인지 물었을 때 작가는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “매일 보는 하늘이지만 똑같은 하늘은 없다. 구름을 그리다 보면 ‘오늘보다 더 나은 내일은 없다’라는 생각을 하게 된다.” 구름 모양을 관찰하고 작업으로 옮기는 일이 삶에 대한 명상과 성찰을 제공해준다는 뜻이지요. 미술관을 방문한 관람객들이 전시된 작품을 감상하면서 하늘의 표정을 읽을 수 있는 시간을 갖기를 기대합니다.

‘Play : Pray’ - 시상(視象)과 심상(心狀)의 관계항 변종필 (미술평론가, 양주시립장욱진미술관장)

나는 ‘물 위를 긋다’를 통해 play, 즉 물과 종이와 긋는 놀이로, ‘일획’으로 무한을 표현함으로써 예술의 직관적 본질로 들어가고자 했다. 그리고 ‘공기와 꿈’을 통해 pray, 즉 작고 엷은 한지 조각을 오려 붙이는 수행과 기도의 과정을 통해 일상의 고뇌를 덜어내고 나아가 자연을 끌어안으려 했다. - 작가노트-

가스통 바슐라르는 「물과 꿈」에서 ‘우리의 정신이 갖는 상상적 힘은 매우 다른 두 개의 축 위에서 전개된다’라고 말했다. 하나는 새로움 앞에서 비약을 찾는, 즉 회화적인 것이나 다양함, 예기치 않은 사건을 즐기는 것이고, 또 하나의 상상적 힘은 존재의 근원을 파고들어가 원초적인 것과 영원적인 것을 동시에 존재 속에서 찾아내려고 한다는 것이다.1 바슐라르가 말한 두 개의 상상적 힘은 예술가의 창작활동이 지닌 특성과 닿아 있는데 강운의 전시 주제어인 ‘Play : Pray’와 맥락적으 로 연결 지을 만하다. 상상력은 ‘실재(자연)’와 떨어져 있어도 끝없이 ‘자연(구름)’의 형태를 만들어낼 수 있고, 또 한편으로는 자연에 존재하는 물질(구름, 공기, 물 등)의 본질을 찾아 그 특성을 시각적으로 표현하려는 작가를 자극하기도 한다.

‘Play : Pray’는 지금까지 펼쳐진 강운의 작품세계를 축약하는 단어라 할만하다. pray는 ‘유화 구름’에서 현재의 ‘한지 구름’까지 지속해 서 탐구해온 <공기와 꿈>이라는 화제를 지칭하고, play는 구름 소재로 일관하던 작업에서 일탈한 <물 위를 긋다>라는 화제를 의미한다. 우선, 사전적으로 볼 때 play가 행위적이라면, pray는 정신적이다. 아크릴 판 위에 한지를 놓고 공기 중으로 물을 뿌려가며 한지 위에 맺 히는 과정을 다루는 <물 위를 긋다>는 play적인 작업이다. 반면 <공기와 꿈>은 얇은 종이를 한 겹 한 겹 붙이며 구축하는 지난한 과정이 자신을 비우고 필요한 것만 남기는 수행 과정이라는 점에서 pray적이다. 그런데 이러한 인식은 보는 사람 혹은 생각의 차이에 따라 전혀 반대로 인식될 수 있다. 예컨대 관람자의 시각에서 <물 위를 긋다>를 본다면 무아의 정신에서 행하는 ‘일점일획(一點一劃)’의 행위를 자 아를 성찰하는 수련과정으로 인식할 수 있다. 이럴 때의 <물 위를 긋다>는 pray적이다. <공기와 꿈>도 마찬가지이다. 한지 조각을 캔버스 에 붙여가며 공간을 메워가는 행위는 화가의 시각에서 떨어져 본다면 그 행위 자체는 play적이다. 이처럼 ‘Play : Pray’는 창작과정의 의미를 행위에 두느냐, 정신에 두느냐에 따라 해석이 달라진다. ‘Play : Pray’는 단어 의미상 대조적 이지만, 정작 해석과 추구하는 뜻은 이분법적 구분이 아니다. 인간의 감성과 이성은 대립적이지만, 완전히 분리될 수 없는 것처럼 ‘Play : Pray’는 예술가의 창조과정에서 반복되는 숙명적 관계를 대변한다.

‘Play : Pray’의 관계항에 관한 더 깊은 이해를 위해서는 강운의 작품세계에 밀착해 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 강운은 매일 같이 구름의 ‘형상’이 지닌 비정형성과 무한성을 드러냄으로써 구름의 실재, 자연의 실재를 표현하고자 했다. 누구도 가보지 못한 실재의 세계 (이데아의 세계 혹은 화가가 꿈꾸고 소망하는 세계)를 그림이라는 틀을 빌려 추구한지 20년이 넘었다. “태생적으로 이름에 구름 ‘雲’ 자를 달고 나와 ‘서정의 장소’가 몸 속 깊은 곳에 아로새겨져 있을지 모른다”(작업노트)고 고백했을 만큼 그 에게 구름은 운명적으로 이어진 듯하다. 강운의 구름은 크게 유화 구름과 한지 2 구름으로 대별되는데 2000년을 기점으로 알려지기 시작한 유화 구름은 어떤 가식이나 허세 없 이 진실로 자연을 대한 화가의 감성의 폭과 깊이를 들여다볼 수 있다. 당시의 작품은 시골의 하늘 풍경을 바라보며 느낀 감성적 체험 이 기원이다. 화순 동복, 나주 비상활주로에서 본 구름의 다양한 인상(색감, 형태, 움직임 등)을 거짓 없이 표현하려는 의지가 뚜렷했다. 가스통 바슐라르는 그의 저서 「공기와 꿈」에서 “구름은 가장 몽상적인 ‘시적 오브제’들 중의 하나이다.”라고 했다. 바슐라르의 표현처럼 구름은 세상을 이루는 많은 물질 가운데 인간을 몽상의 세계로 끌어들이는 물질이다. 느릿느릿하게 움직이는 뭉게구름을 보고 평화롭 게 노니는 양 떼를 연상하고, 빠르게 이동하는 구름을 볼 때면 순간이동을 꿈꾼다. 괴테가 구름을 ‘안개구름, 뭉게구름, 새털구름, 비구 름’으로 치밀하게 분석하여 구름이 지닌 특징과 상징적 아름다움을 이야기했듯이 구름은 어떤 영감을 주거나 꿈을 꾸게 하는 대상이다. 실제 강운의 유화 구름은 “환상적이고도 빛나는 형태를 지닌 이 모든 구름들, 저 암묵의 어둠들, 공중에 내걸려 서로 덧 포개어져 있는 저 녹색 빛과 장미빛의 거대함……”으로 시작되는 한 풍경화가의 그림을 분석한 보들레르의 글 3 처럼 구름의 모든 변화를 놓치지 않고 담아내려는 폭풍적 열정이 가득했다. 생성과 소멸, 평화와 분노, 행복과 슬픔 등 인간의 삶에서 일어나는 모든 대립적 현상을 품고 있었 다. 이 같은 유화 구름의 시각적 강렬함에 견주어 한지 구름은 하나의 무한공간이자 여백으로서 하늘 공간을 표현하려는 의도가 강하다. 여러 색의 작은 한지가 일출에서 노을까지 시간의 흐름에 따른 하늘빛을 대신해서 캔버스 전체에 촘촘히 덮인다. 이때 서로 겹치는 작은 면들이 자연스럽게 밝고 어둠으로 나뉜다. 새털처럼 가볍고 얇은 한지 조각들이 흩어지고, 겹쳐지고, 포개지는 과정이 수없이 반복되면 4

서 화면은 하늘의 깊이를 더해간다. 작은 한지 조각들이 촘촘히 붙여지면서 층이 형성되고 포개지는 양에 따라 구름의 형태와 질량이 달 라진다. 실재의 세계, 꿈의 공간에 이르고자 하는 화가의 절실함이 구름이 되어 유동한다. 무엇보다 하늘을 응대하며 빠른 붓놀림으로 구 름의 움직임을 포착하던 유화 구름의 숨 가쁜 역동성은 사라졌지만, 구름에 관한 철저한 탐구와 사색은 한층 깊어졌다. 초기 구름과 현 재 구름의 존재적 무게감의 차이가 발견되는 지점이다. 구름은 어떤 특정한 형상을 지니지 않는다. 어느 한 가지 형태로 규정할 수 없는 비정형이다. 그래서 매 순간 변하는 자연을 빠짐없이 화 폭에 옮긴다는 것은 사실상 불가능하다. 단지, 화가의 망막이 아닌 마음에 반영(反映)된 특별한 상(象)을 옮기는 것이다. 이 점에서 그의 한지 구름은 외형적 재현이 아닌 구름을 통해 생의 의미를 깨닫고 싶은 심상의 표현이라 할 수 있다. 이와 관련하여 작가도 “청년기에 마 주한 구름이 마음에 품은 꿈과 방랑이었다면, 장년기의 구름은 인간이라는 미약한 존재로서의 고백과 겸손이다.”라고 말했듯이 한지 구 름은 열린 마음, 열린 공간으로서 궁극에 작가의 마음이다. 이 같은 시각에서 볼 때 <물 위를 긋다>는 한층 더 심상에 가까운 작업이다. 작가가 작은 물방울들의 의미를 ‘인간의 마음’으로 해석한 이 유를 알만하다. 인간의 마음은 곧 자신의 마음이다. 결국 마음의 탐구를 위한 행위가 <물 위를 긋다>로 이어진 것으로 보인다. <물 위를 긋다>와 <공기와 꿈>은 환경조건차가 크다. <물 위를 긋다>는 습도, 온도에 따라 물방울이 맺히는 정도, 한지에 스며들고 번지 는 범위와 형태가 달라진다. 모든 과정에 작가의 의도보다 우연성이 더 강하게 작용한다. 그래서 작가의 의도대로 마무리되는 경우가 없 다. 마치 자연의 흐름을 자의적으로 막을 수 없듯이 흐르고, 번지고, 맺히는 과정을 의도적으로 유도하지 못한다. 특히 표현 방법적 측면 에서 보면 <공기와 꿈>이 지난한 행위의 반복이 주는 노력의 산물(반복적인 행위의 축적이 필수적이라는 점에서 특별한 우연은 없다)이 라면 <물 위를 긋다>는 물과 공기가 순간적 행위로 만나 만들어낸 우연의 효과이다. 이 같은 우연성은 철저히 작가가 원했던 특성이다. 우연성과 함께 <물 위를 긋다>는 철저히 자신의 몸과 마음을 다스리는 수행의 의미가 크다. ‘일점일획(一點一劃)’에 모든 것을 담겠다는 것은 모든 것을 비우겠다는 의미이기도 하다. 무언가를 채운 듯 하지만, 아무것도 채워지지 않은, 어떤 형태를 그렸지만, 결국, 아무런 형 태도 아니다. 이러한 의미를 동양철학에서 찾는다면 노자가 자연이 주는 몽롱한 아름다움을 보고 표현한 “모양이 없는 모양이며, 구체적 인 사물이 없는 상”(無狀之狀, 無物之象-『논어』, 14장)이란 말과 연관지을만 하다. 사실 공기와 물은 과학적으로 같은 질료이다. ‘공기 중의 수증기가 아주 작은 물방울이나 얼음 알갱이로 변하여 흰색이나 회색으로 뭉쳐 공중에 떠다니는 것’이 구름이다. 따라서 구름은 가벼운 수분덩어리이다. 그 수분덩어리가 바람을 만나 어떤 형태를 생성하고 소멸하기 를 반복하듯 <물 위를 긋다>도 한지 위의 물감과 만난 수분덩어리의 맺힘이다. 구름은 하늘이라는 공간속에서, 물은 땅을 기반으로 움직 이지만 구름과 물은 물질적으로 별개가 아니다. 궁극적으로 ‘Play : Pray’전은 ‘시상(視象)과 심상(心狀)으로 접근한 실재의 세계에 관한 탐구’이다. <공기와 꿈>은 눈에 보이는 상을 따라 옮기는 행위적 측면을 강조하고, <물 위를 긋다>는 행위보다 정신일치로서 심상을 표현한 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 그러나 결국 두 주제는 자신만의 조형언어를 통해 순수, 본질, 근원에 관한 회귀적 탐구와 물음이라는 공통 목적을 지녔다. 문명과 제도의 틀에서 벗어나 자신 의 본성을 회복하고자 하는 노력의 과정이다. 외부의 자연환경을 끌어들여 캔버스에 묘사하는 것은 화가의 선택이지만, 이후 외형을 버 리고 내면의 본질에 다가서는 것도 화가의 몫이다. 문제는 자신을 둘러싼 외형을 벗고 내면을 얼마나 깊이 있게 들여다볼 수 있느냐다. ‘기상학적 아름다움’을 거부하는 것보다 그 아름다움에서 빠져나오는 것이 더 힘들다고 했던 보들레르의 말처럼 대기 중에서 일어나는 자연현상을 자신만의 조형언어로 표현해온 강운의 구름 그림은 부정할 수 없는 미적 아름다움을 내재하고 있다. 동시에 그의 그림은 숱 한 시간과 지난한 과정을 거쳐 구름으로 상상할 수 있는 ‘실재의 세계’를 담아내고자 한 자기수련을 보여준다. 형이상학적으로 정의 된 ‘실재’로서의 ‘자연’을 작가가 상상력으로 만들어내고 있는 것이 현재의 ‘구름’, 즉 <공기와 꿈>이고, 그 과정에서 일탈적 행위로써 자 신을 비워내는 수행과정으로 <물 위를 긋다>를 시도하고 있다. 이렇듯 강운 작품은 ‘실재’를 탐구해 가는 철학적 의미에서 출발해 ‘구름’ 을 통해 실재(이데아)의 세계에 닿아가고 있다. 결론적으로 그의 작품은 만져지지 않는, 눈으로 볼 수 없는 ‘실재’를 찾는 여정이다. 그리고 이 여정에 작가는 과감하게 관람자의 몫을 남 겨두었다. 자신이 느끼고 찾고자 했던 그 실재의 세계를 함께 찾아보기를 희망한다. 이것이 화가 강운이 ‘Play : Pray’전으로 전하고 싶 은 진실한 메시지이다.

Play : Pray – The relationship between the poetic imagery and mental imagery Byun Jong Pil (Art Critic and Director, Yangju City Chang Ucchin Museum of Art)

In Drawing a Stroke on the Water, I tried to go into the intuitive essence of art, ‘play,’ through expressing infinity by one brushstroke like a play with water and paper. Also, in Air and Dream, I tried to ‘pray’ as this work involves prayer and the meditational practice of layering small and subtle-colored traditional handmade paper. I intended to take out the burden of daily life and embrace nature.

- Artist Statement Gaston Bachelard said, ”The imaginative power of our mind is based on two distinctively different roots,” in his book, Water and Dreams. One is enjoying the leaping point of a new start, like various illustrative and unexpected events, and another is digging into the origin of being to see the primary and eternal elements within 1.

Bachelard’s two types of imaginative power are associated with the characteristics of the artist’s creative process. They are also connected with the title of Kang Un’s exhibition, Play : Pray.

Imaginative power can create the shape of ‘nature (cloud)’ endlessly without ‘reality (nature)’. It also stimulates the artist who is trying to find out the foundation of the natural elements (cloud, air, water, and etc.) and express their characteristics visually.

Play : Pray summarizes Kang’s art in short. ‘Pray’ is the subject of Air and Dreams, in which he searched from his earlier series, ‘oil painting cloud,’ to the recent series, ‘handmade paper cloud.’ ‘Play’ is the subject of Drawing a Stroke on the Water which went further from the cloud series.

First of all, from the literal point of view, ‘play’ is behavioral and ‘pray’ is psychological. Drawing a Stroke on the Water shows ‘play’ as part of his working process: Kang placed handmade paper on the acrylic board and sprayed water in the air, and water drops landed on the paper. However, Air and Dreams was made through the contemplating process of adding one layer of thin paper after another to build up the multiple layers. This work exemplifies the ‘pray’ part, as this is a meditational practice, emptying the self except the only necessary stuff.

However, this could be perceived totally differently depending on the viewer’s point of view or background. For example, if we look at Drawing a Stroke on the Water through a different viewer’s point of view, the action--‘one dot one brushstroke (Eastern painting tradition)’ without self-awareness--could be seen as a meditational practice. Then, Drawing a Stroke on the Water can be also read as based on ‘pray.’ Air and Dream can be interpreted differently as well. The action of the artist filling the canvas with pieces of handmade paper can be read as based on ‘play’ apart from the artist’s intention.

Like this case, Play : Pray can be read differently depending on how we find the meaning of the creative process, either focusing on the action or the mental. Although Play : Pray is contrary in meaning, the interpretation and the meaning the artist is seeking is not completely separated. As reason and emotion seemed opposite but they are not divided completely, Play : Pray represents the fateful relationship which repeats itself in the creative process.

In order to understand more deeply about the relationship between Play : Pray, we need to look at Kang’s art closely.

Every day, Kang tried to express the existence of clouds and nature, by revealing the irregularity and infinity that the shape of a cloud has. It has been over twenty years pursing the world of reality where no one has ever been--the world of Idea or what the artist is hoping and dreaming through his painting.

“At birth, my name bears a cloud (Un ‘雲’ means a cloud). I might have a very sensitive place deep in my body.” (Quotes from artist statement) To him, the cloud is destined to be connected with him.

Kang’s clouds can be categorized as oil painting clouds and handmade paper 2 clouds. Since 2000, the oil painting clouds show the depth and broadness of Kang’s sensitivity dealing with nature truthfully without pretentiousness or exaggeration.

Those paintings came from the emotional experience when he looked at the sky in the countryside. He vigorously tried to capture the various characteristics--without an ounce of lie--color, shape, and movement of the clouds he saw at the landing strip in Naju city, east part of Hwasoon.

Gaston Barchelard said, “Clouds are one of the dreaming and ‘poetic objects.” Like Barchelard’s expression, a cloud is one of many elements that create the world, and it leads people to the dreaming world. We associate the slowly moving cumulus with peacefully wandering sheep. Also, when we see the fast-moving cloud, we think about teleportation. Goethe analyzed the clouds and specified as ‘nebulous, cumulus, cirrus, and nimbus.’ As he told us about the different characteristics and symbolic beauty of each cloud, the cloud is the subject that gives a certain inspiration or dreamy quality.

Kang’s cloud oil paintings are filled with passion to capture all the changes of the cloud like Charles Pierre Baudelaire’s description 3 about a landscape, “all these clouds with fantastic and illuminating shapes, the quiet darkness, and the vast green and rosy color blocks overlapping each other in the air…” They contain a lot of conflicted phenomena happening in a human’s life such as creation and extinction, peace and rage, happiness and sadness. In contrast with the visually strong oil painting clouds, the handmade paper clouds show the intention to express the sky as an infinite space as well as void.

Small pieces of differently colored handmade paper are densely layered on the canvas like the colors of the sky as time passes from sunrise to sunset. The overlapped small areas on the canvas are naturally divided into bright and dark sections.

The sky goes deeper as the process goes on; feather-like light and thin handmade paper pieces got scattered, overlapped, and piled endlessly. The small handmade paper pieces are densely placed and created layers. According to the number of layers, the shape and heaviness of the clouds differ. The desperation of the artist who wants to reach to the real world and a space of dream becomes floating clouds. Although the intense dynamic of the oil painting cloud often found in fast brushstrokes capturing the sky has disappeared, the thorough research and contemplation on the cloud went further. This is when we can see the difference: the weight of being seems different between this early cloud series and the present one.

The cloud doesn’t have any certain shape. It is atypical and hard to be described as one shape. Therefore, it is actually impossible to depict ever-changing nature on a canvas without any omission. In fact, it represents the particular image reflected in the artist’s mind, not his eye. In this point of view, his handmade paper cloud is not a physical representation of the object but the expression of the image in the mind of the artist, who wants to realize the meaning of the life through clouds. Kang said that “the cloud I saw in my adolescence was about dreams and wanderlust; however, the cloud I see now in my recent years is about confession and humility, about how small and weak humans are.” Like Kang said, the cloud is ultimately the artist’s mind, like open soul and open space.

From this point of view, Drawing a Stroke on the Water is much closer to the imagery in the mind. It is understandable for the artist to interpret small water drops as ‘human mind.’ The human mind is also his mind. The search of the mind continued in Drawing a Stroke on the Water.

Drawing a Stroke on the Water and Air and Dream show different environments and circumstances. Drawing a Stroke on the Water can show various results because the way the water drop forms, and the range and shape of the water smudge differ depending on the humidity and temperature. In all these steps, chance works stronger than the artist’s intention. Therefore, the work is hardly completed as the artist expected. Just like the cycle of nature cannot be stopped, Kang’s work process involving running, dripping, and forming cannot be controlled. If we look at the way of expression, Air and Dream is the result of repeated efforts (There isn’t any special incident as it was crucial to accumulate the repeated action.), and Drawing a Stroke on the Water is the accidental effect when the water and air meet at the certain moment. This accidental characteristic is exactly what the artist wanted. With the accidental quality, Drawing a Stroke on the Water brings up the meaning of practice to take care of one’s body and soul. Betting everything on ‘one dot and one brushstroke’ means equally emptying everything. It seems like filling something, but nothing was filled, or painting something, but it doesn’t shape anything. If we look for a meaning of this in Eastern philosophy, we can find the connection with what Lao-tzu said when he saw the obscure beauty of nature: “the shapeless shape and the image without certainty.”

Air and water are from the same elements scientifically. A cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of liquid droplets or frozen crystals made of water or various chemicals, often in white or gray. Therefore, a cloud is a light liquid mass. That liquid mass meets wind and forms shapes and disappears repeatedly. Drawing a Stroke on the Water is also the formation of liquid mass mixed with paints on the handmade paper. A cloud moves in the aerial space, and water moves on the surface of the ground. A cloud and water, however, are not completely different chemically.

Fundamentally, the exhibition Play : Pray is a study on the real world searching through poetic and mental imageries. Air and Dream emphasizes the behavioral aspect like depicting the visual image. Drawing a Stroke on the Water can be interpreted as a mental image rather than focusing on the action. However, they both share the same goal: recursive study and query about innocence, essence, and origin through Kang’s formative langue. It is the process to recover the true nature of oneself by stepping aside from the civilization and system. It is the artist’s choice to bring the natural environment from outside and depict it on the canvas, but approaching to the center of the inner sense after taking off the outward appearance. The point is how deeply can he look at the inner-self without the outer shell. Baudelaire said that it is harder to escape from the beauty of nature than refusing ‘meteorological beauty.’ Like he said, Kang’s cloud paintings, created with his own formative language, have irresistible beauty. Simultaneously, cloud paintings show his practice to include the real world depicted as clouds through numerous hours of difficult process. ‘Nature’, as metaphysically defined ‘reality’, is the current state of ‘cloud’ in Air and Dream. In the process, he stepped aside and tried to empty himself and created Drawing a Stroke on the Water as his mental practice. Kang started from a philosophical question, searching for ‘reality’ and through ‘cloud’ he reached to the world of reality (Idea). In summary, his work is the journey of seeking invisible and intangible ‘reality.’ In this journey, the artist boldly left the viewer’s share to find. He hopes that we can look for the world of reality together that he wanted to feel and discover. That is the true message the artist Kang Un wanted to deliver through Play: Pray.

‘공기와 꿈’은 두께를 가늠하기 어려울 만큼 얇은 한지를 작게 오려 붙이는 지난한 과정에서 바람이 넘나드는 푸른 하늘의 생생한 결을 느끼며, 거대한 하늘로 만들어진다. 아날로그와 디지털 시스템은 전부 작은 입자들이 모여 구체적인 이미지를 만들지만, 이 모든 것들은 우리의 손끝을 통해 창조되는 공존의 미학이다.

Through the difficult process of cutting the Korean paper, Hanji into the same sized shapes, which does not do the thickness justice, and by layering each piece, Air and Dream came to embody a gigantic sky that lets one experience the wind and a vivid texture. Analog and digital systems both use small particles gathered together that become a specific image, but all of these are made from our fingertips and became aesthetic of coexistence.

‘물 위를 긋다’ 작업은 종이 위를 붓으로 긋는 최소행위만으로 회화가 궁극적으로 도달하려고 하는 지향점을 찾는 작업이다. 맑고 투명한 색들이 서로 스며들고 번져나가며 촉촉한 종이 위에 현상(現狀)이 나타나며 ‘순수에너지’에 의해 파장이 인다. 이것은 불투과적 성질의 아크릴판에 흡수되지 않은 에너지의 숨결들로써, 기포 반응들이 서로 스며들고 번져나가며 고스란히 화선지에 형상화된다. 새로운 도구와 재료와의 대면은 충격을 발생시키고 이 충격은 궁극적으로 그림을 제작하는 나에게 생동감 넘치는 그 무엇이 됐다.

The series Drawing a Stroke on the Water tries to find an intention point with minimal gestures, such as drawing a single stroke on paper, and I believe this is what paintings ultimately want to achieve. Pure and transparent colors appear on wet rice paper as they soak into the paper and mix with each other, and a wavelength was created by “Pure Energy.” This wavelength represents the energy that was not absorbed on a non-penetrate acrylic board. The bubbles from the board remain intact on the rice paper as they soaked and spread with each other.

Encountering new tools and mediums are impactful, and this impact gives vitality to painters.

예술은 우리의 머리위에 구름처럼 떠있다. 최재혁 (사비나미술관 큐레이터)

강운 작가를 처음 만난 건 지금부터 5년 전이다. 광주 출신인 지인작가의 개인전이 열렸을 때 미술관에 방문한 작가와 처음 인사를 나누 었다. 소개와 함께 명함을 받았고, 그 명함 뒷면에는 구름 그림이 있었다. ‘강운’이라는 이름과도 어울리는 인상적인 명함이었다. 손바닥 보다 작은 사이즈의 명함 속엔 사실적으로 묘사된 멋진 구름 작품이 있었다. 이 후 시간이 흘러 광주시립미술관에 방문했을 때 전시장 에 걸린 강운 작가의 작품을 실물로 보게 되었는데, 명함에서 본 느낌과는 상당히 달랐다. 사진에서만큼 묘사적이지는 않았고, 원작에서 만 찾을 수 있는 놀라운 점이 있었다.

구름을 그렸던 화가들 작품 속에 구름을 등장시키는 몇 명의 화가들이 떠올랐다. 19세기 영국의 낭만주의 화가 존 컨스터블(John Constable)은 인물화 중심의 전통적 회화 속에서 풍경화라는 장르를 이끌어낸 선구자다. 변화하는 날씨와 대기 그리고 당장이라도 움직일 것 같은 구름의 느낌을 사 실적으로 묘사하였다. 반면 벨기에의 초현실주의 화가 르네 마그리트(René Magritte)는 기발한 상상력의 세계에 구름을 자주 등장시켰 다. 마그리트의 구름은 때로는 사물처럼 단일 개체로 존재하거나 일정한 형태로 반복되며 다양한 의미를 상징하곤 했다. 이들은 각각 그 시대와 사조 안에서 선구자적인 역할을 하였으며, 자연과 구름을 자신만의 방식으로 해석하고 표현한 화가들이었다. 강운 작가 또한 그 렇다. 강운의 구름은 구체적인 묘사는 배제한 채 최대한 정제되고 군더더기 없는 붓질로 그려졌다. 그러면서도 구름과 대기, 빛의 적절 한 색감배치를 통해 사실적 표현을 놓치지 않았다. 하늘 풍경에 대한 작가의 감성과 테크닉으로, 사진에서는 보이지 않고 원작에서만 보 였던 것은 바로 ‘시각적 감동’이었다.

유화에서 한지로 <공기와 꿈> 90년대 초 유화로 그린 구름은 자연을 큰 시선에서 본 구름으로, 순간의 인상을 머릿속에 입력하고 ‘빠른’ 터치로 표현하였다. 하지만 2011년부터 제작해온 <공기와 꿈>은 오랜 시간의 겹이 축적된 ‘느린’ 작업이다. 과거의 작업이 구름과 빛이 만들어낸 변주를 넓은 시야 로 포착했다면, 현재의 작업은 수분과 공기로 존재하는 생명의 입자들을 세밀하게 찾아내는 작업이다. 얇은 한지를 일정한 크기와 간격 으로 오리고 붙여 중첩함으로써 대기, 구름 입자를 만들고 그것이 쌓여 바람의 결, 공기의 겹을 만든다. 사실 구름은 수분입자들의 순환 과정 중 한 형태에 불과하다. <공기와 꿈>작업 또한 끊임없이 변화하는 작가의 26년 작업의 과정이자 한 장면이다. 작가는 유화작업이 가져다준 상업적 성공을 뒤로하고 2005년 일본의 모리미술관 전시를 기점으로 유화작업을 그만둔다. 익숙함과 결별하고 새로운 재료와 매체의 시도를 통해 정체되지 않는 작가가 되려 하였다. 하지만 도전을 위해서는 오랜 시간과 노력이 필요했고, 경제적 어려움도 감당해 야 했다. 새 작업이 알려지고 인정받기까지 10여년의 시간이 흘렀다. 본 전시에 공개되는 <공기와 꿈>작업들은 크기, 밀도 면에서 지난 10년간 노력의 정점에 있다. ‘청년기에 마주한 구름이 마음에 품은 꿈과 방랑이었다면, 장년기의 구름은 인간이라는 미약한 존재로서의 고백과 겸손이다’는 작가의 말처럼 <공기와 꿈>은 오랜 시간의 겹을 쌓아가는 ‘수행’과 ‘기도(Pray)’의 과정이었다.

일획의 조형성 <물 위를 긋다> 오랜 시간이 필요한 구름 작업과는 달리 일획의 점으로 그려지는 <물 위를 긋다>는 물감과 기포가 서로 스며들며 반응하는 ‘순간’을 그 려낸 작업이다. 작업 과정을 보면 아크릴판 위에 젖은 화선지를 놓고 점을 찍어 물감이 자연스럽게 번져나가게 한 후 종이가 마르면 판 에서 떼어낸다. 젖은 화선지와 판 사이에 자연스럽게 생성된 기포와 공기의 우연적 형태를 통해 조형성을 찾아내고, 숨과 생명력을 느낄 수 있다. 한 획을 긋기 위해서는 화선지에 적셔진 물의 양, 물감의 농도, 붓의 상태뿐만 아니라 그날의 기온, 습도, 작가의 컨디션까지 다 양한 환경적 요인이 작용한다. 때문에 일획은 압축된 에너지의 정신적 표현이다. 조선시대 사대부들은 사군자 혹은 문인화를 통해 자신 들의 학문과 정신적 수양의 결과를 과시하였다. 대상을 묘사하는 것에 목적을 두기보다 하나의 대상물을 통해 정신적 수양의 결과를 가 늠하는 잣대로 문자향서권기(文字香書卷氣)를 더욱 중시했다는 점을 볼 때, <물 위를 긋다>또한 깨달음을 얻기 위한 노력이라는 점에서 공통점이 있다. 다만 다채롭게 표현된 점들의 조형성을 보면 과연 작가는 자신의 예술적 직관으로 물과 종이 위에서 ‘놀이(Play)’를 했다 는 생각이 든다.

작가의 삶과 작품은 하늘, 구름과 공통점이 많다. 구름은 무엇을 위해 어디로 가버리는지 알 수 없지만 계속 이동하며, 날씨와 기류에 따라 그 형태를 달리한다. 작가 또한 표현방식 변화와 매체실험에 도전해왔고, 시기와 환경에 따라 작품의 형태와 결과 또한 다양했다.

90년부터 시도한 작업들을 보면, 해변가의 밀물과 썰물이 만들어낸 패턴을 부조로 떠내는 작업, 한지 위로 말린 꽃잎과 나뭇잎을 부착 시키는 작업, 벽에서 넝쿨줄기를 떼어내며 그 과정을 사진으로 기록하는 작업 등이 있다. 이 모든 작업은 ‘자연에너지’, ‘순환성’, ‘한국적 소재’라는 키워드 안에서 연결된다. 그리고 현재의 <공기와 꿈>에서 구름은 여러 소재선택과 도전에 대한 귀결이며, 무의식적 반영이다.

지난 26년간의 다양한 작업 가운데 <공기와 꿈>, <물 위를 긋다> 두 개의 연작만을 공개하는 현 시점을 하늘로 비교하자면, 변화무쌍한 구름이 걷힌, 혹은 비온 뒤 갠 맑아진 날씨와 같다. 우리는 맑은 하늘을 두고 ‘하늘이 높다’고 말한다. 높은 하늘은 깨끗한 대기의 상태이 기 때문에 그 깊이를 정확히 가늠하기 어렵다. 강운의 작품세계 또한 맑은 하늘처럼 오랜 시간의 겹과 깊이가 존재한다. 작가와 하늘의 공통점이 더 있다면, 작가를 처음 만났을 때 ‘저는 구름을 그리는 강운 작가라 합니다.’라는 음성에서 느꼈던 조금은 느리지만 차분한 어 조에서 나온 여유 그리고 평온함이다. 철학자 칸트는 ‘인간은 세상을 창조할 수 없지만, 신이 창조한 자연을 보고 아름답다 느낄 수 있다’ 하였다. 강운 작가는 자연의 아름다 움이 생각보다 가까이 있다는 것을 일찌감치 깨달은 것 같다. 그 아름다움이란 시각적인 미를 넘어 자연의 이치와 섭리를 통한 삶에 대 한 철학적 사유의 결과다. 그리고 그는 작품을 통해 우리도 깨달을 수 있도록 이끌고 있다. 잠시 하늘을 올려다보자. 아름다움은 멀리 있 지 않고 예술도 멀리 있지 않다.

Art is floating above us just like a cloud Choi Jae-Hyeok (Curator at Savina Museum of contemporary Art)

It has been five years since I met an artist Kang Un for the first time. He and I exchanged greetings at my acquaintance’s solo exhibition at that time. After the short greeting, he gave me his card which had the image of clouds on the back.

It was an impressive card perfectly matching with his name, Kang Un. On the palm-sized card, even smaller than a palm, there was a realistically depicted image of clouds. Later I visited the Gwangju Museum of Art and saw his artworks in person. Then I had a completely different feeling from when I saw the work on the small card. It was not as depictive as the one on the card but it has something unique, something can be only seen in the original work.

Artists who drew clouds Some artists who have featured clouds in their artworks came across my mind. John Constable, the nineteenth century British Romantic painter was a pioneer who opened up a new genre of a landscape painting during the period when a classical portrait was prevailing. In his paintings, he realistically captured the weather changes, the atmospheric flow, and clouds which seemed to move any minute. On the other hand, René Magritte, Belgian Surrealistic artist presented clouds in his ingenious imagination. In Magritte’s artworks, clouds appeared as a single object and sometimes as a repetitive pattern symbolizing diverse meanings. Both John Constable and René Magritte were pioneers during each period and in each current of thought who interpreted nature and clouds in their own ways, and so is Kang Un. Kang’s clouds were depicted with delicate and refined brushstrokes without any illustrational depiction. At the same time, he also maintained realistic painting style by proper color placement to achieve balances among the clouds, air, and light.

What I felt from Kang’s original work, which I didn’t get the feeling when I saw his small card, was ‘Visual Ecstasy’ created by his sensibility and technique that were used to paint his sky.

From Oil to Korean paper, Hanji, <Air and Dream> In his oil paintings of clouds created in the early 1990’s, Kang Un captured and depicted the first impression of the sky in the wide view with quick brushstrokes. However, since 2011, in the series of his paintings, Air and Dream, he shows a ‘slow’ work with accumulated layers. While his early works captured variations of the clouds and light in the wide view, his latest works closely find the living organisms existing as the air and moisture. By cutting the Korean paper into a same size and shape, and layering each piece, he describes the air and cloud particles and furthermore, the wind and a layer of the air. Actually, clouds are just visible accumulation of water droplets created in the water cycle. Air and Dream is also just one scene from his accumulated works that have been consistently changed over 26 years. Kang quit working with oils after holding an exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, Japan, and left behind his commercial success with the oil paintings. He tried not to settle for the comfort of the familiarity and adapted new materials and refused to stay still.

To face the challenge, it took lots of time and effort, and also he had to suffer from financial difficulties. Ten years has passed until his new works became recognized by the public. Air and Dream presented in this exhibition is at the height of 10 years of his efforts in its size and quality. “While the clouds in my in my youth was my wanderings and dreams in my heart, the clouds in my manhood were my confession and modesty”, Kang Un stated. As the artist said, Air and Dream was his praying and undergoing discipline to accumulate layers of time.

One Stroke’s formativeness, <Drawing a Stroke on the Water> Unlike Kang’s paintings of clouds which take a long time to be completed, a series of his paintings Drawing a stroke on the water needs only a short time to mark one dot; the series captures the ‘moment’ when the color and air bubble permeated through the rice paper. To see the progress of the series, first, mark a dot on the wetted rice paper on an acrylic board, and see how the color spreads naturally. When the paper dries up, remove the paper from the board. You can find formativeness from the air bubbles and air shapes which were accidentally and naturally created between the wetted rice paper and the acrylic board, and furthermore you can feel a breath and a sense of vitality through these.

To draw one stroke, many factors are influenced by diverse things such as a quantity of the water for soaking the rice paper, a density of paint, condition of a brush, the temperature and humidity of the day, and even the artist’s condition.

Thus, the ‘One Stroke’ is a mental expression of compressed energy. In the Chosun Dynasty, noblemen boasted the result of their mental discipline achievement through working on the Four Gracious Plants and Literary Artists’ Paintings.

They considered MujahyangSeokwongi [文字香書卷氣] very important, which means emphasizing more portraying their passion for study and painting rather than depicting the objects precisely. In the sense that Kang’s Drawing a Stroke on the Water is also a result of his effort to find enlightenment, Drawing a Stroke on the Water has something in common with the paintings in Chosun Dynasty. But, seeing the colorful dots’ formativeness, I think the artist ‘played’ with the rice paper and the water using his artistic intuition.

Kang Un’s life has very much in common with the sky and clouds. We do not know where the clouds go and disappear, but it keeps moving and changing its shape through the weather and atmospheric flow. The Artist also has kept challenging his way of expression and use of the medium, and as a result, his works also became diverse as its time of creation and condition. Kang’s artworks have been broadening including the painting, relief, photography and installation since 1990; for instance, he created a relief of the seaside’s patterns which were naturally made by rising and low tide, a work made of dried floral leaves and foliage on Hanji, photographing the process of taking off vines from a folding screen. All of his works are related to certain keywords such as ‘natural energy’, ‘circularity’ and ‘Korean traditional materials’. The clouds in Air and Dream are a conclusion and a reflection of his challenge for selecting materials and his unconsciousness.

Among the artist’s various artworks over the past 26 years, the Savina Museum decided to present Air and Dream and Drawing a Stroke on the Water to the public. When I compare this selected works for the exhibition to the sky, I might think of the crystal clear sky especially after the rain. The ‘Clear Sky’ can be interpreted as the ‘High Sky.’ From the high sky, I can barely estimate the depth of the sky because it’s too clear. Likewise, from Kang’s artworks, you would feel the depth of the long period and the layers like the clear sky. Another common thing between the sky and Kang is a sense of tranquility that I felt from his little slow but relaxed tone of voice that I heard when he said “I am Kang Un who draws clouds” five years ago at my acquaintance’s solo exhibition where I met him for the first time.

Immanuel Kant, a German Philosopher said “a human can’t create the world, but can feel the beauty of nature that God created.’ Kang seems to realize that the beauty of nature is much closer than we think. And the beauty is regarded as the result of Kang’s philosophical thoughts on the life over the superficial beauty earned from the provision and order of nature. And he’s guiding us to the way of achieving enlightenment through his artworks. Take a break and look up the sky. The beauty is not far away nor is art.
