베른트 할프헤르 전을 열며

사비나미술관의 차별화 전략 중 하나는 융복합 미술관을 지향하는 점입니다. 서로 다른 분야의 개념을 녹여 하나로 묶는 융합은 곧 창의성을 의미하지요.

2006년부터 한국에서 다문화가족으로 살고 있는 독일 출신의 베른트 할프헤르는 사비나미술관이 추구하는 융복합 정신을 작품에 구현하고 있는 예술가입니다. 그는 이번 사비나미술관 개인전에서 동양과 서양, 아날로그와 디지털, 과거와 현재, 개인과 집단, 로컬리즘과 글로벌리즘을 융합한 작품을 선보이고 있습니다. 세계적인 경영학자 미하일 칙센트미하이(Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)는 <창의적 개인의 특징>을 다음과 같이 정의했습니다. “창의적인 사람은 대단한 활력을 갖고 있으면서 또한 조용하고 움직임이 적다. 창의적인 사람은 상상력이 풍부하지만 현실에 대한 확고한 인식을 갖고 있다. 창의적인 사람은 일하는 과정에서 어려움과 괴로움을 겪지만 동시에 즐거움을 느낀다.” 과학적 창의성과 예술적 감성이 융합된 그의 작품을 감상하면서 창의성의 기쁨을 느끼시길 바랍니다.

베른트 할프헤르의 교차점, 그 유기적인 관계와 현상 강재현 (사비나미술관 전시팀장)

베른트 할프헤르는 국내에서 파노라마 사진을 촬영한 후 구(球) 형태로 제작한 작품으로 친숙하다. 360도 공간을 한눈에 인지할 수 있는 그의 작품은 시각의 한계를 넘어선 새로운 공간지각 방식을 제시해 우리에게 세상을 보는 방식을 확장시켜 주었다. 그 는 독일 울름(Ulm)에서 태어나 자랐다. 슈트트가르트와 뮌헨 사이에 위치한 울름은 바우하우스(1919-1933)의 계승을 위해 조 형대학(1953-1933)이 처음 설립된 곳이며, 과학의 도시라 불릴 만큼 곳곳에는 공공연구기관과 기업의 연구소가 밀집되어 있는 곳이기도 하다. 이러한 환경은 그동안 작가의 작품이 과학적인 사고와 관심에서 출발해 끊임없는 탐구와 실험으로 이어진 것으 로 볼 때 무관해 보이지 않는다. 베른트 할프헤르가 한국에서 작가로 활동한지 10년이라는 시간이 지났다. 사비나미술관은 인 간의 지각체계에 대한 지속적인 작가의 탐구가 어떻게 변화되고 있는지, 그러한 관심은 어디서부터 출발했는지, 그리고 작업방 식과 과정은 이 시대를 어떻게 통찰하고 있는지 살펴볼 수 있는 전시를 마련하고자 한다. 이번 전시는 사진매체를 중심으로 작 가의 과학적인 사고와 특유의 섬세한 감성, 이주민으로서의 경험으로부터 도출된 시각을 영상과 입체 설치 방식으로 보여준다. 특히 근작과 더불어 초기작품을 함께 구성해 보여줌으로써 작가의 작업이 다방면으로 확장되어 가는 과정과 사진의 한계를 극 복하기 위한 다양한 실험의 결과물을 살펴볼 수 있도록 구성했다. 작가의 작업은 다양한 시각적 형식을 가지지만 그는 작업과정 에서 우연히, 혹은 필연적으로 마주하게 되는 현상에 주목한다. 그러한 현상은 작품 안에서 시각적, 물리적 움직임을 동반한 채 로 그 안에 깊숙이 침투되어 있거나 관객의 능동적인 참여로 발견되기도 한다. 먼저 전시장 1층 입구에 설치된 작품 <Sommermärchen>은 철 프레임이 위아래로 맞물려 있어 관객이 열어야 그 안에 담긴 이 미지를 볼 수 있도록 제작되었다. 창문을 열 듯 손잡이를 당기면 프레임 안에 갇혀있던 하늘과 땅이 모습을 드러난다. 열린 문은 이내 천천히 닫히기 시작하며 결국 하늘과 땅은 소리 없이 하나가 된다. 이번 전시에는 모두 4점의 구 작품을 선보인다. 이 구 안에는 작가가 경험한 기억의 장소가 이미지로 기록되고 저장되었다. 작품에서 남대문은 불타버리기 전의 시간 안에 갇혀 있고, 작가의 어린 시절의 기억이 담긴 마구간은 철거되어 남아있지 않다. 빨간 눈금(시간의 눈금으로 읽힌다)이 표시 된 막대기에 설 치된 그물망, 그 안에 던져진 둥근 공은 작가가 재직하고 있는 중앙대학교 안성캠퍼스의 풍경을 담는다. 작가는 카메라로 자신 이 경험한 세상을 구 안에 가두고 시간과 기억의 파편을 만들어 나간다. 작가는 최근 컴퓨터 프로그램을 이용해 사진을 변형시키는 작업을 진행중이며, 이번 전시에는 <Tokyo Life>, <Collective Unconsciousness>, <Happy Rain>을 선보인다. 인터넷 검색으로 수집한 사진은 컴퓨터 프로그램에 의해 픽셀단위로 재구성되어 추상적인 패턴의 색면으로 변형된다. 이렇게 변형된 이미지에서 사진의 본래 형체는 찾을 수 없다. 사진에 담긴 내용과 현장성 이 사라져버린 추상화된 이미지에서는 색점들만이 보일 뿐이다. 우리가 보았던 많은 이미지들 또한 우리 기억 속에서 이처럼 모 호하게 남아있는 것이 아닐까? 우리가 기억 속에서 특정한 순간이나 이미지를 끄집어내는 순간은 주관적일 뿐만 아니라 불명확 하기 일쑤다. <Happy Rain>은 인터넷 검색창에 ‘Happy’라는 단어로 검색했을 때 나온 이미지들을 모아서 만든 영상 작품이다. 각각의 이미지들이 마치 빗방울이 떨어지는 것처럼 색점에 의해 덮히면서 다른 이미지로 교체되는 과정을 통해 작가는 관객에게

나타남(생성)과 사라짐(소멸)의 순간을 목격하게 한다. 사비나미술관을 동영상으로 촬영한 후 스틸컷들을 일렬로 나열해 하나의 패턴으로 보이게 한 <Savina Story> 시리즈는 독립적인 낱장의 이미지들을 거시적 시각에서 하나의 패턴으로 읽히게끔 만든다. <CNN News>는 CNN에서 방영되었던 400개의 뉴스를 하나의 화면에 담아 동시에 재생시킨 작품이다. 영상은 물론 오디오까 지 하나로 합쳐지면서 관객은 수많은 소리들과 화면들로 포화상태가 된 상황과 마주하게 된다. <Kinetic object, without title>은 1992년에 제작되었던 작품이다. 당시 작가는 사물의 움직임과 그 물리학적 원리에 흥미를 갖 고 다양한 실험들을 진행했으며 이 작품은 그러한 탐구의 결과이다. 곡선을 그리며 휘어져 있는 얇은 굵기의 스테인레스 스틸 봉 세 개가 연결되어 있는 이 작품은, 작은 바람에도 스스로 균형을 맞추며 움직이도록 만들어져 있어서 마치 ‘삼체문제(threebody problem)’1) 를 떠올리게 한다. 이 작품은 사물의 움직임에 대한 물리학적 접근을 넘어 오늘날 무너질 듯 말듯한 균형을 유지하는 현대사회에 대한 비유로도 읽힌다. <Without Title (acryl mirrors)>는 작은 거울 조각으로 이루어진 작품이다. 거울을 중심으로 타자와 내가 스쳐 지나가면 거울을 통해 반사된 나의 모습이 보이기도 하고 타자의 모습을 볼 수도 있다. 여기서 관객의 움직임은 자신에 대한 반영이자 동시에 타인 에 대한 발견으로 이어진다. EU에 가입된 국가의 국기들을 하나의 국기로 합친 <Flag>는 축구경기장 코너킥 라인에 설치되어 있 는 깃발의 형태를 차용한 작품으로, 유럽경제공동체를 내세운 EU의 스포츠 정신에 대한 은유이자 역설이다. 한국의 전통 가옥과 강남 압구정의 아파트 단지를 촬영한 사진을 육면체에 붙여 3차원의 입방체로 재조합한 <Transformer>는 한국의 과거와 현대라 는 서로 다른 시간, 서로 다른 공간의 풍경을 하나의 조형물 안에 결합시킨 작품이다. 관객이 다양한 형태로 변형시켜 볼 수 있는 이 작품은 유난히 빠르게 변화하는 한국의 도심 속 풍경에 대한 작가만의 재치 있는 해석이라고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 작품들에는 유럽연합에 속한 독일인이자 한국에 정착한 이주민이기도 한 작가의 서로 다른 정체성으로부터 비롯된 시각이 반영되어 있다. 한정된 시공간에 따른 물리적 한계를 다양한 조형적 실험을 통해 뒤집어 보는 베른트 할프헤르의 작품들은 시각적인 흥미와 더불 어 우리의 시각과 사고의 폭을 넓힌다. 2006년 경기도 파주에서 시작된 작가의 한국생활은 2011년부터 중앙대학교 교수로 임용 되면서 본격화되었다. 이는 작가로 하여금 보다 심층적으로 한국 사회를 경험하게 되는 계기가 되었다. 한국인의 사고와 사회적 시스템은 외국인인 작가에게 적응하기 쉽지 않았을 뿐더러 극복해야 할 현실이었을 것이다. 그러한 상황에서 작가가 가졌을 심 리적, 정신적인 충돌과 합의의 과정은 자기 자신뿐만 아니라 세상의 모든 맞물린 유기적인 관계, 그러한 움직임 속에서 변형되고 창출되는 새로운 현상에 대한 관심으로 이어진 것으로 보인다. 이번 사비나미술관의 전시는 그동안 단편적으로 보여주었던 전시 형태가 아닌 베른트 할프헤르의 전반적인 작업의 흐름을 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의를 갖는다. 자신을 둘러싼 사회와 자연 적 현상에 대한 작가의 끊임없는 탐구는 시대의 변화를 담아 앞으로도 새로운 경험과 기술적 실험으로 다양하게 실현될 것이다.

Bernd Halbherr’s Intersections, Organic Relations and Phenomena Kang Jae-hyun (Chief Curator, Savina Museum of Contemporary Art)

The Savina Museum of Contemporary Art presents the works of Bernd Halbherr, a German artist well known in Korea for his spherical installations coated with panoramic photographs. Halbherr’s works suggest a new take on spatial perception that goes beyond visual limitations by allowing the viewer to perceive a 360-degree space at a single glance, thus expanding the way we see the world. He was born and bred in Ulm, Germany, which is situated between Stuttgart and Munich. Ulm is home to the Ulm School of Design, the first college of fine arts established for the purpose of continuing the legacy of Bauhaus (1919-1933), as well as clusters of public and business research institutions befitting its reputation for being a city of science. Such an environment, it seems, is not irrelevant to Halbherr’s creative process, which begins with scientific thinking and interests, and finishes with ceaseless research and experimentation. It has been a decade since Bernd Halbherr settled in Korea to work as an artist.The Bernd Halbherr exhibition was designed to examine how his relentless investigation of visual perception has expanded and changed, where such interests originated, and how his creative process and technique reflect the current times. This exhibition showcases the artist’s scientific thinking and exquisite sensibility, and the perspective derived from his experience as an expatriate manifested in the form of visual images and installation with a focus on photography. In particular, this show was arranged in order to give the audience a glimpse into Halbherr’s expanding concepts and the results of a diverse range of experiments conducted to overcome the limits of photography, by rearranging his early works with his current ones. The artist’s creations appear in diverse forms, but he pays particular attention to phenomena he has encountered accidentally or inevitably in his workshop. Such phenomena, accompanied by visual and physical movement, deeply permeate the works and are revealed by the audience’s active participation.

Sommermärchen, installed at the entrance of the exhibition hall on the first floor, has a metal frame interlocked vertically, which is designed to be opened only by the viewer to see the image inside. Pulling the handle, like the opening of a window, reveals the sky and earth hidden under the frame. Soon, the door is slowly closed and the sky and earth are brought back together to become one in silence. This exhibition presents a total of four spherical installations, and the locales expressed in the spheres have been recorded and stored as a space of Halbherr’s own experience and memory. Here, Namdaemun Gate is stuck in the past, prior to having been burned down, and the stable of his childhood has been demolished with nothing left. A net has been installed on poles with red markings (which seem to indicate gradations of time), and the ball thrown in the net reflects the landscape of the Anseong Campus of Chung-Ang University where Halbherr teaches. By taking photographs, the artist holds captive a world he has experienced in the sphere and creates fragments of time and memory.

Recently, Halbherr has developed a computer program that enables his photographs to be transformed into a series of works. Three of the works displayed in this exhibition—Tokyo Life, Collective Unconsciousness, and Happy Rain—have been created using this program. The photographs have been collected from the Internet and the figures in the photographs are made into countless pixels, transformed into images unable to hold their original shape. The content and sense of immediacy in the photographs disappear and are converted into abstract images that allow visual perception only by means of light. Could it be that the images we perceive

and remember are moments of such obscurity? Capturing a memory is often not only extremely subjective but also unclear. His video work Happy Rain displays this process through images found by searching for the keyword “happy.” The results end up being covered with falling dots of colors and replaced with other images, allowing the audience to witness the moments of appearing (creation) and vanishing (extinction). In Savina Stories, he records a video of the Savina Museum and arranges the series of stills in a line to make them look like a single pattern. The work composed of detailed images is viewed as one pattern from a macroscopic perspective. CNN News features 400 CNN channels cramped onto a single screen, playing their video clips and sounds simultaneously, thus leading the audience to confront a state of burnout beyond the saturation of sounds and screen.

Bernd Halbherr’s O.T. is a reproduction of his 1992 work and it is said that back then he was keenly interested in the principles of physics behind these movements and energetically performed a variety of experiments. The work, produced by connecting three thin, bent, stainless steel rods together to enable them to keep balance and move stably even at the touch of a gentle breeze, invites the viewer to ponder the “three-body problem,” 1) which has yet to be solved. O.T acts as an extension of the artist’s worldview, allowing for multi-layered insight and interpretation. Also, Flag that brings together the national flags of EU member countries, and Transformer featuring the photos of Korean apartment complexes and traditional hanok houses fit together like blocks reflect the artist’s viewpoint as an expatriate toward Germany and Korea, respectively. In Flag, the flag that seems likely to be installed in a soccer stadium is a metaphor as well as paradox of the sportsmanship of the EU promoting itself as an economic community. Transformer holds the time and space of the past and present in a single three-dimensional form that can be transformed by the audience; it is also a rendering of the artist’s impressions of the incessant urban development in Korea.

The works of Bernd Halbherr look in reverse at temporal and spatial limitations not only to captivate visually, but also expand viewers’ ideological perspectives and thoughts, and furthermore subvert them gradually. His life in Korea began in Paju City, Gyeonggi-do in 2006, and since 2012 when he became a professor at Chung-Ang University, he began to experience real Korean society. A Korean way of thinking and the social system should have been realities that the German artist would find difficult to adapt to, yet still expected to overcome. The process of psychological and mental conflict and reconciliation that he has likely undergone under such circumstances seems to have translated into a deep interest in not only himself, but also in all the interlocking organic relations and new phenomena that were transformed and created in such a movement. His works, featuring an array of outcomes and phenomena occurring at the moments when images converge and change, hover between consciousness and unconsciousness of what we see, rather than attach concrete meanings or convey specific messages. The Bernd Halbherr exhibition at the Savina Museum will, rather than be a conventional exhibition showing his works in a fragmentary manner, be a meaningful experience that offers the viewer an opportunity to explore the overall flow of his oeuvre. His constant inquiry into a phenomenon will continue to reflect the changes of the times onto various representations through new experiences and technical experimentation.

교차점 – 내부와 외부 사이 베르너 마이어 (독일 괴핑겐 쿤스트할레 관장)

예술가들은 리얼리티로 여겨지는 무언가를 형상화하지만 그들이 만들어내는 것은 이미지에 대한 형상화이다. 형태와 내용에 있 어서 모든 예술적인 이미지들은 변형되고 내용은 다른 무언가로 전환된다. 작품의 구상과 개념은 구체화 작업과 그 과정에 관련 한 관찰로 이루어져 있다. 베른트 할프베르의 키네틱 조각들과 사진을 이용한 작업에서 찾아볼 수 있는 기본적인 패턴 중 한가지는 움직임이다. 움직임은 각 각의 이미지를 통해 경험과 지각에 영향을 미치고, 이러한 지각을 통해 시간과 공간 사이의 연관관계를 만들어낸다. 초기의 키네 틱 조각, <O.T>(1992/2015)는 세 개의 구부러지고 광을 낸 스틸 와이어로 얽히게 구성된 작품으로, 열린 공간 속에 움직이는 이 미지를 만들어 낸다. 가볍디가벼운 터치가 그 구부러진 선들을 움직이게 하여 드로잉 하듯 공간이미지를 창출한다. 이 이미지의 핵심은 나선형의 움직임으로서 언제나 불완전하며 보는 이의 관점에 따라 다르게 지각되는 구조에 바탕을 두고 있다. 여기엔 세 가지 요소가 결합되어 있다: 움직임의 경험을 통해 시간과 공간이 사실적으로 제시된 형태, 물리학적으로 조직된 역학 관계, 우연의 가능성이 회전하는 위쪽의 움직임과 순환이 에너지로 결집된 형태이다. 이와 같은 현상은 반짝이는 구 형태의 사진 오브제에서도 보인다. 위쪽의 모든 움직임과 그 아래의 둥근 형태들은 어느 시점에서도 다르게 보이며 이에 따라 시각적 내러티 브의 중심이 달라진다. 본질적으로 단순하고도 치밀하게 계산된 배치는 움직임 자체를 이해할 수 없으나 변화하는 관점에 따라 다르게 경험되는 변증법적인 순간을 이끌어낸다. 이 과정에서 관람객은 작가와 소통하는 주체자가 되는 동시에 그로 인해 생성된 이미지에 대한 비판적인 관찰자이자, 순환하는 확실성과 우연적인 과정의 중재자가 된다. 구조, 팽창적인 역학 그리고 기회가 이 게임의 주된 요소이다. 이 단순한 게임은 이미지의 생성과 경험을 통해 추상적이고 복잡한 은유가 된다. 움직이는(Kinetic) 사진 작품 <Sommermärchen [A Summer’s Tale]>(1997/2014)은 하늘과 들판, 위와 아래가 보이게 열 수 있다. 이 구조가 서서히 닫히면 하늘과 땅(지구)이 하나가 되고 추상적인 조각 속으로 사라지게 된다. <Deutschland. Ein Sommermärchen>(독일, 여름동화)은 쏜크 보트만(Sönke Wortmann) 감독이 2006년 독일팀의 월드컵 캠페인 내용을 다룬 다큐멘 터리의 제목이기도 하다. 또한 <Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen>(독일, 겨울동화)는 하인리히 하이네의 풍자적이고 정치적인 서사시의 이름이며, <Wintermärchen>은 1997년 베른트 할프베르의 작품 제목으로 역시 풍자적이고 정치적인 내용을 담고 있 다. 현재 한국에서 살며 학생들을 지도하고 있는 할프헤르는 이러한 작업들을 통해 독일을 그만의 방식으로 풀어가고 있다. 이러 한 제목들은 마치 닫히기 전의 하늘과 땅 사이에 있는 공간처럼 열린 해석과 상상의 공간을 제시한다. 이후 작업의 변화 과정은 <Tokyo Life>(2012), <Collective Unconsciousness>(2012), <Healing Fields>(2013) 그리고 <Happy Rain>(2015)에서 좀 더 확고하게 강조된다. 작가는 컴퓨터 프로그램을 사용해 디지털 이미지들 속의 형태가 분명한 모티프들을 추상적인 색면과 패턴으로 변화시킨다. 그리고 그것을 기본적인 픽셀의 집합으로 재구성한다. 카메라는 더 이상 도구로써 예술적 인 이미지를 재현하거나, 눈과 카메라 사이에 유사한 이미지를 재현하는 역할을 하지 않는다. 그는 무한한 인터넷 아카이브에서 가져온 익명의 사진들을 가지고 작업한다. 그 후에 사진의 변형은 컴퓨터 안에서 이루어진다. 포스트 포토그래픽(포스트모던 이 후의 사진)은 디지털매체의 구조 속에서, 스크린의 표면에서, 가상의 숨겨진 공간 뒤에서 그 시선을 변화시킨다. 작가는 직접 만 들어낸 컴퓨터 프로그램을 통해 화가의 아날로그적 직관을 대신하고 있다. 베른트 할프헤르가 만들어낸 이미지들은 독립적이고 자동적이며, 시각 언어로 비춰질 수 있는 색상구조로 표현된다. 온라인 키워 드 검색으로 찾은 오리지널 사진에서 가져온 사실적인 요소들은 추상적이고 뚜렷한 패턴으로 전환되어 최종적으로 유일무이한 결 과물이 된다. 베른트 할프헤르는 이것을 일렉트로닉 음악 작곡에서 쓰이는 ‘샘플링(sampling)’이라는 테크닉을 사용해서, 원본 사 진의 모티프들을 작업 속의 명암과 색조로 녹아 들게 변형시키기도 한다. 디지털화된 가상 현실속에서 사진과 비디오는 이미지로 변형된 진정한 모더니즘의 반복을 경험하고 있다. 이러한 변형과정의 끝은 시작의 비밀이 드러나지 않는, 오직 색으로 존재한다.

작가는 2002년부터 <Short Stories> 시리즈를 시작했다. 이 시리즈는 특정한 장소를 담은 비디오 클립을 바탕으로 만들어지며, 이번 전시에서는 사비나미술관이 그 장소가 되었다. 축소되어 나란히 정렬된 장면들은 그 안의 이야기들마저 소멸된 듯 보인다. 추상적인 색채의 흐름을 통해, 오직 색의 움직임만이 시공간의 관계성을 드러낸다. 나란히 정렬된 빛나는 이미지들은 셀 수 없이 많은 독립적인 사진들로 이루어졌다. 그러한 색들의 미묘한 변화는 하나의 새롭고 독립적인 풍경사진으로 융화된다. 모든 사진은 이러한 일련의 이미지들을 통해 감정을 솟구치게 하는 한 곡의 음악처럼. 예컨대 다양하고 복잡한 오케스트라 내부의 움직임과 소리처럼 추상적이고 공감각적인 감정을 느끼게 한다. 비디오 영상작업, <CNN News>(2011)는 이러한 개념적인 맥락에서 바라봐야 한다. 어두운 화면이 5분간 지속되다가 단지 몇 초 동안 400개의 CNN뉴스 헤드라인들이 동시에 쏟아진다. 이 400개의 TV이미지들이 온통 뒤섞여 하나의 반짝이는 이미지가 된다. 모자이크처럼 구성된 이 수많은 움직이는 이미지들은 하나의 빛나는 패턴을 이룬다. 이와 더불어 음향 역시 다양한 음원이 하나의 통합된 소리로 뒤섞여 백색소음처럼 들린다. 베른트 할프헤르의 예술적 개념은 이미지의 이미지, 즉 대상을 담아낸 각각 의 이미지들을 한데 모아 추상적으로 구조화시키는 ‘메타플레인(meta-plane)’이라고 볼 수 있다. 현상의 다양한 지점을 모두 포 괄하는 동시성과 과다하게 사용된 사진들의 표면에 대한 지각을 훑는 비평적인 담론에서 볼 때 이 비디오 작업은 시각적, 청각 적 논제이며 동시에 질문이 된다. 구(sphere)형의 사진 오브제는, 공간의 개념을 독특하게 풀어가고 있다. 360도 파노라마 사진 이미지가 구에 입혀져 있다. 주목 해야 할 것은 공간에 대한 조각적 개념과 사진적 개념이 공존하고 있다는 것이다. 이 작품의 바깥 쪽 표면을 이루는 실재와 내부 의 상상들로 이루어진, 그리고 입체오브제(구의 형태)와 사진의 관계는 매우 흥미롭다. 이 작업에서 파노라마는 중요한 역할을 한 다. 작가는 각각의 사진 속의 명료한 장면을 담아내는 원과 구의 완전한 형태에 매료되었기 때문이다. 이는 작가가 파노라마 형식 이 가지는 완전성에 매료되었기 때문이다. 원과 구의 조각적인 형태는 각각의 사진들의 구체적인 장면을 형태 안에 담는다. 관람 자의 시점이 파노라마 사진 전체를 완성하지 못한다고 해도, 그의 상상력이 사진의 나머지 부분을 채워서 완성할 것이다. 관람자 는 이미지를 바깥에서 바라보지만 동시에 관람자 자신의 경험이 작품을 이해하는데 중요한 역할을 한다. 그것은 마치 또다른 장 소를 중심으로 기록되는 새로운 파노라마의 시작과도 같다. 이제까지 구는 바닥에 놓여져 자신의 존재를 주장하는 듯 보였지만, 그와 동시에 자신에게 투영되고 있는 이미지들을 들여다보는 것을 방해하는 모순성을 지녔다. 그러나 이제 이 구들은 사진 이미 지와 구의 형태가 하나로 어우러져 설치작업으로 표현된다. <Rescue>(2015)는 빨간색과 희색이 칠해진 측량 막대기에 망을 걸고, 그 안에 중앙대 안성캠퍼스 사진이 덮인 공이 부유하는 것처럼 설치한 작품이다. <Stadel>(2015)에서는 이제는 없어진 작가의 삼촌댁의 농장에 있었던 마구간 (작가는 이곳을 ‘기억으 로 가득찬 공간’ 이라고 일컫는다) 사진을 보여준다. 세 개의 막대 위에 높이 올려진 이 설치물은 마구간이라는 공간과 그 공간 에 대한 기억 사이의 거리를 주제로 다룬다. 사진이 투영된 구형태의 조형물은 독특한 시각적 마법을 경험하게 한다. 결국 구는 기하학적으로 사용되는 정의를 뛰어넘는 세계에 대한 비유이다. 각각의 설치물을 통해 작가는 구에 맥락을 부여하고 해석의 범 위를 넓혀나간다. 이미지의 운동성(kinetics)과 그것에 대한 지각은 베른트 할프헤르가 탐구하는 주제들 중 하나다. 그는 사진의 경계와 한계를 탐 구하는데 관심을 가진다. 그것은 사진을 카메라로 찍는 순간에 이뤄지는 것이 아니라 그만의 예술적 주제에 따라 사진을 이용한 후반 작업, 즉 이미지가 가진 가능성을 발전시키는 데 있다.

Intersections – between inside and outside Werner Meyer (Director, The Kunsthalle Göppingen, Germany)

Artists supposedly produce pictures of reality but what they really create are pictures about pictures. In terms of form and content every artistic image is a metamorphosis and has as its content this transformation into something else. Artistic work and its conception consist of the steering and the revelatory observation of this process.

One basic pattern in the work of Bernd Halbherr is found in the movement that defines his kinetic sculpture sand the works that feature photographs as their object. Movement forms the experience and the perception of the respective picture and, through that perception, places time and space in relation to each other. The early kinetic sculpture O.T (1992/2015) consists of three bent, polished steel wires interwoven to form an open, instable spatial drawing. The sculptural lines are themselves an image of movement, the lightest of touches sets the structure in motion, and the potential of this image lies in the spiral interplay with its current state, which is always imperfect and perceived differently from different sides.

There is a fusion of three elements: time and space in the experience of a movement that is both real and suggested by form, wellcoordinated dynamics, and the potential of coincidence are all merged together in the turning movement of the top and in the life cycle of circularly gathered energy. The same phenomenon is also seen in the perception of the photo spheres in every movement of the top, of the underlying circles and from any perspective, the centre, the focus of the image narrative is different. In this arrangement, which is inherently simple and precise, it is this dialectical moment – which is not graspable in the movement and which is experienced differently from every perspective – between the perception of the subject and the concreteness of the sculpture that leads to the particular form and constellation. For this process the artist and possibly also the viewer of the participatory artwork function as actuators and also, at the same time, as the critical observers of the image that is thereby formed, whose perception attempts to mediate between circular certainty and the aleatoric process. Structure, expansive dynamics and chance are the main components of the game. A simple game thus becomes an abstract, complex metaphor for the creation of a picture and its experiential and perceptual horizon.

The kinetic photo sculpture Sommermärchen [A Summer’s Tale] (1997/2014) can be opened to reveal the sky and a meadow, above and below. When the mechanism closes, heaven and earth become one and disappear into the abstract sculpture. ‘Deutschland.

Ein Sommermärchen’ is the name of a documentary film by the director Sönke Wortmann about the German national football team’s 2006 World Cup campaign on home soil. ‘Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen’ is the name of a satirical, political epic poem by Heinrich Heine and ‘Wintermärchen’ is the title of a 1997 work by Bernd Halbherr which functions in the same way. Halbherr lives and teaches in Seoul, South Korea. With these works the artist thematises his idea of Germany in his own, individual way. The titles suggest the kind of interpretative imaginative space that opens up between the sky and the earth, before closing shut again.

The emphasis is put even more firmly on such transformations of pictures in works such as Life in Tokyo (2012), Collective Unconsciousness (2012), Healing Fields (2013) and Happy Rain (2015). Using a computer program, the artist transforms the digital images and their concrete, figurative motifs into abstract colour fields and patterns, ultimately through the reorganisation and concentration of the elementary particles (pixels). For the artist, the camera no longer plays a role as a tool for artistic image generation and the analogous parallels traditionally drawn between the eye and the camera are left behind. He works with anonymous pictures taken from the infinite archive of the internet. The post-photographic turn takes place inside the computer, in the digital structure of the medium, on the surface of the window of the screen and in the virtual space that opens up behind it. The relatively autonomous process of the computer program written by the artist takes the place of the intuition of the analogue, painting artist. In these pictures by Bernd Halbherr that results in colour structures that can be perceived as an individual, autonomous visual language. The final image has been stripped of all the original, representational elements present in the photo found online through keyword searches and has been turned into an abstract, concrete pattern and image that is identical only to itself. As part of the processes of transforma20

tion, Bernd Halbherr uses the ‘sampling’ technique familiar from electronic music, in which the motifs of the original pictures melt into colour shades and tones. In the virtual reality of digital picture media, photography and video are experiencing a repetition of Modernism’s real utopia of transformation into an image that, at the end of the process of transformation, as an autonomous work of art, now only ‘sounds’ to itself in colour tones that no longer reveal the secret of its origins.

Halbherr began his series of ‘Short Stories’ in 2002. They are based on video footage of specific places, in this case the Savina Museum. In the rows of minimised stills, the motifs dissipate into abstract flows of colour elements in which only the colour movements remain visible as the essential dynamic of time and space. Arranged in rows, shimmering images are created in which the countless individual pictures, with their colour and light gradients, fuse into one new autonomous picture landscape. Every picture can be read as the musical score of the feelings triggered by these sequences of images – feelings that prompt an abstract, possibly synestheticinterpretation like the sound of a polyphonic synthetic orchestra and its internal movement.

The video projection CNN News (2011) should be seen in this conceptual context. Every five minutes the darkness is interrupted for a few seconds and 400 news headlines taken from the CNN channel are shown at the same time. These 400 TV images also merge to create one large shimmering image. Optically, the mosaic-like welter of individual moving images becomes one glimmering pattern.

In parallel to that, on an acoustic level the content and form of the audio dissolves into a unifying sound that verges on white noise.

Once again Bernd Halbherr’s artistic conception finds a meta-plane, a picture of pictures, from the individual picture to the subject of the picture as abstract structure. In the critical discourse about the all-encompassing simultaneity of events and about perception in the face of the overabundance of pictures, this video piece functions as a visual and acoustic thesis and question at the same time.

In the spherical photo sculptures, spatial perception is at issue in a particular and astonishing way. A360°-panorama photographic image is projected onto the sphere. The focus is on a symbiosis of the sculptural and the photographic conception of space. The relationship between the real, three-dimensional object and the photo, which forms its outer skin and its imaginary interior, is particularly interesting. The panorama plays an important role because the artist is fascinated by its claim to totality, and by the radical form of the circle and the sphere, which defines the sculptural form and is implied in the specific view in each respective photograph.

Where the observer’s viewpoint fails to offer a panorama view, his powers of imagination will complete the picture. He sees the image from outside and at the same time has an experience of himself at its centre. It appears as if the sphere had recorded the panorama of another place in its centre. While the spheres have until now usually stood on the ground and have therefore asserted their direct presence in the room, which was at the same time irritatingly contradictory to the image on display, they are now integrated into the installations of the exhibition. In the installation entitled Rescue (2015), the sphere is suspended in a net hung between red-andwhite surveying poles and shows a picture of the Anseong Campus of Chung Ang University. In Stadel (2015), the sphere shows and contains a picture of stables that no longer exist on his uncle’s farm, ‘a place full of memories’ (Bernd Halbherr). On three poles high above, the installation thematises the distance to this place and these memories. The spheres, because they become transparent and clear through the photography, have a particular optical magic for our perception, which is in any case called into question. After all, the sphere – beyond its geometric determination – is also a metaphor for the world. With each particular installation the artist gives the sphere an additional context and further interpretative scope.

The kinetics of the subject of the picture and its perception are one of the artistic themes explored by Bernd Halbherr – he is interested in exploring the limits and borders of pictures in his work. It is not when the pictures are taken with the camera but in the postphotographic processing of the pictures that the imaging opportunities develop and with them his artistic theses as discussed above.
