어느 멋진 날 Fetching

아트 바젤에 참가하기 위해 마이애미에 있던 작년 겨울, 나는 유명한 마이애미 시티 발레단의 무용수들과 함께 작업하는 기회를 가졌다. 나는 발레단원의 강아지를 빌려 조바니에게 그 강아지를 머리 위로 최대한 들어올리고 높이 도약하여 마치 물속에서 날아오르듯 뛰어달라고 요청하였다. 하지만 강아지는 그 상황을 그다지 마음에 들어하지 않았기에 우리는 강아지의 얼굴에 완벽한 표정이 나올 때까지 수없이 많은 컷을 촬영해야 했다.

I was in Miami for Art Basel last winter, and I took some time to photograph memebers of the incredible Miami City Ballet. I borrowed the dog from one of the ballerinas, and asked Jovani to raise the dog far above his head and jump as if he was flying out of the water. The dog wasn't very pleased with this situation, so we had to take many shots before we got the perfect expression on his face.

필라델피아 시내 전역에 공공미술 전시의 일환으로 스테인드글라스 작품이 거리를 뒤덮었다. 사진의 배경이 된 이 장소는 ‘마법의 정원’이라는 이름만큼이나 아름다웠다. 나는 절묘하게도 아름다운 이 장소를 한적한 골목에서 발견했다. 사진 속 알렉산더와 엘리자베스는 별것 아니라는 듯 쉽게 포즈를 취했지만 사실 이 자세를 유지한다는 것은 상당히 어려운 일이었다. 촬영이 진행되는 동안 그들의 포즈는 계속해서 변해갔는데 그건 그들이 팔다리에 있는 힘껏 힘을 주고 있다는 뜻이었다. 내가 “다리를 높이! 허리를 뒤로 더 젖히고, 그대로… 그대로…” 라고 소리 지를 때마다 그들은 호흡과 함께 얇은 신음을 흘렸지만 불평하지 않았다. 우리는 한 시간의 촬영 끝에 결국 만족하는 장면을 얻을 수 있었고 “자, 촬영 마칩시다!” 하고 말하는 그 순간, 그들은 바닥으로 쓰러졌다.

Throughout Philadelphia, public art displays of stained glass litter the streets. They're called "Magic Gardens," and they are quite stunning. I found this particularly gorgeous location in a desolate alley. Alexander and Elizabeth make this look very easy, but it was incredibly difficult to hold themselves up. And the pose kept evolving, which meant they had to continue to strain their limbs. Every time I'd call out, "Legs higher! Arch your back more. Hold it… Hold it …" they would groan under their breath, but do it without complaint. After an hour of shooting, I was finally satisfied.

The second I said, "It's a wrap," they collapsed to the ground.

이제껏 무용수 수백 명의 사진을 찍었지만 케나처럼 무용수이면서 동시에 궁수인 사람은 한 명뿐이었다. 그녀는 평일에는 애리조나 발레단의 발레리나이지만 주말에는 토끼 사냥꾼이다. 이 사실만으로도 그녀는 충분히 특별한 존재이지만 사진 촬영에도 놀라운 잠재력을 가지고 있었다. 촬영날은 엄청나게 더웠고 사막은 태양을 피할 수 있는 여지를 전혀 주지 않았다. 내가 땀을 심하게 흘리고 있어 카메라를 제대로 볼 수 없었기 때문에 더욱더 힘들었다. 나는 카메라를 정확히 보지 못한 채 그녀가 가장 높이 뛰어오르는 순간을 예상하고 셔터를 눌러야 했고 그녀는 높은 점프를 한 번 할 때마다 활을 쏘았다. 그날은 운이 좋게도(토끼들에게) 그 지역에 토끼는 없었다. 그녀의 다리의 그림자를 보는 순간, 나는 내가 원하던 장면을 얻었음을 알았다.

I have photographed hundreds of dancers, and Kenna is the only one who is also an archer. By trade she is a ballerina for Arizona Ballet, but on weekends she hunts rabbits. This is definitely unusual, and it was very exciting potential for a photograph.

It was an incredibly hot day, and the desert offers no shelter from the sun.

It was a particularly difficult shot to get because I was sweating so badly I couldn't see through the camera.

I had to guess when she was at the peak of her jump. During each leap, Kenna shot the arrow. Luckily there were no rabbits in the area. Once I saw the shadow on her leg, I knew we had gotten the shot.

엘로와즈 서커스단과의 마법 같던(그리고 지독하게 추웠던) 아홉 시간 동안의 촬영 중 찍은 세 번째 사진이다. 이 놀라운 장면은 어떻게 나온 걸까? 루벤과 모드는 동료들의 도움을 받아 공중으로 점프했고 다시 도약하고 점프하기를 반복했다. 우리는 촬영 중간중간 추위를 피하기 위해 뉴욕공립도서관으로 달려들어가 몸을 녹였는데(그러나 온기는 밖에서 촬영하는 몇 분 사이에 사라지곤 했다) 그때 도서관 앞에서 두 사람이 책을 읽으면서 공중부양하는 아이디어가 떠올랐다. 우리는 책을 빌려서(도서관에서 그리 어려운 일이 아니었다) 밖으로 뛰어나갔다. 따뜻한 날씨에서도 완성하기 힘든 묘기였기에 영하 6도 이하의 기온에서는 거의 불가능에 가까웠다. 그들은 다시 따뜻한 실내로 뛰어들어가기 전에 단지 몇 번만 성공했을 뿐 다시는 그 광경을 볼 수 없었다.

This is a third photograph from my magical (and freezing) nine hour shoot with Cirque Eloize. How did this happen?

Each of them was tossed in the air, and then caught, by the performers beneath them. We had run into the NY Public Library to take cover from the cold, and I realized I had to shoot therethey couldn't stay warm for more than a few minutes outside. I had the idea of two people levitating while reading. We borrowed books (not difficult to find in a library), and ran outside. This is a difficult enough trick to accomplish in warm temperatures, but in 20 degrees it's almost impossible. They only did a few tosses before they ran back inside, not to be seen again.

안젤리카는 세계 정상급의 후프 묘기 전문가로 눈으로 보고도 믿기 힘든 놀라운 기술들을 보유하고 있다. 그래서인지 내가 이 단순한 기술을 요청했을 때 조금 놀란 기색이었다. 솔직히 말해서 내가 이 장소를 선택한 이유는 따로 있다. 촬영을 진행한 날은 지독하게 추운 겨울날이었고 길 건너에는 따뜻한 커피숍이 있었기 때문이었다. 단순한 필요에 의해 만들어진 사진인 것이다. 촬영 중간중간 안젤리카는 추위에 심하게 몸을 떨었지만 내가 카메라를 드는 순간에는 침착하고 흔들림 없는 자세를 보여주었다.

Angelica is the premier hoop specialist in the world, and she is capable of crazy tricks. So when I asked her to do this simple pose, she was a bit surprised.

Truthfully, I chose the location because it was absolutely freezing outside and a warm coffee shop was across the street. So it was a photo born from necessity. In between takes, she was literally shaking. But when I lifted my camera, she was calm and still.

카즈는 온몸의 관절을 자유자재로 움직여 믿을 수 없는 자세를 만들어내는 뛰어난 곡예사다. 실내에서 몸을 푸는 그를 보며 나는 무한한 가능성을 감지했다. 그는 몸으로 무엇이든 할 수 있을 것만 같았다. 그러나 매서운 날씨가 이어졌기에 야외에 오래 머물기 힘들어 했다. 운 좋게도 갑자기 브라이언트 파크의 지하철 역을 비추는 그 유명한 조명이 눈에 들어왔다. 이 멋진 장소는 내 마음을 단번에 사로잡았다. 브라이언트 파크는 경비가 삼엄하고 사진 촬영을 좋아하지 않았기 때문에(나는 이 점을 경험을 통해 혹독하게 배웠다) 우리는 재빠르게 행동해야 함을 알고 있었다. 내가 상상 속에서 그린 것보다 더 환상적인 결과물이 나왔는데 이런 경우는 매우 드물다. 예상했던 대로 몇 분 후 경비원이 우리를 향해 고함을 질렀지만 그때는 이미 우리가 원하는 장면을 얻은 후였다.

Kazu is an unbelievable contortionist.

As I watched him warm up inside, my mind was racing with possibilities —he could literally do anything with his body.

However, the temperature was extremely cold, and he didn't want to be outside for too long. Fortunately, almost immediately I saw this light illuminating the famous Bryant Park subway station.

It struck me as a stunning location.

I knew we had to act quickly—Bryant Park has lots of security, and they don't like photography (I've discovered this the hard way). This is one of those rare cases when the photograph looks better than what I saw in my imagination. As predicted, security arrived and yelled at us after a few minutes, but it was all we needed.

벨로 녹Bello Nock 은 세계에서 가장 유명한 광대 중 한 명으로 타임지에서 뽑은 ‘미국 최고의 광대’다. 나는 <Circus Among Us> 프로젝트를 위해 그를 촬영하고 싶은 마음이 간절했다. 수많은 이메일이 오고간 끝에 벨로는 뉴욕을 방문하는 시기에 촬영하는 것에 동의했다. 나는 촬영을 즉흥적으로 끌어가는 것을 좋아하지만 이번엔 처음부터 어디에서든 그가 의자 위에서 균형을 잡는 모습을 담고 싶었다. 촬영 직전 타임 스퀘어에 있는 슈니퍼스 퀄리티 키친Schnipper’s Quality Kitchen 이라는 식당에서 촬영 허가를 받았다.

식당 측에서는 20분의 시간을 주었지만 우리는 결국 두 시간을 쓰게 되었고 벨로는 그곳에서 세 개의 햄버거를 먹었다. 처음에는 나를 포함한 모든 사람들이 그가 의자 위에서 떨어질까봐 불안에 떨었지만 시간이 지나면서 그가 그 높은 의자들 위에 있다는 사실을 모두 잊은 듯 했다.

Bello Nock is one of the most famous clowns in the world, and has been recognized as "America's Best Clown"

by Time Magazine. I was desperate to photograph him for "Circus Among Us." After many emails, he agreed to a shoot when he was in NYC. I like to keep all my shoots sponatneous, but I knew I wanted him balancing on chairs somewhere. Right before the shoot I got permission to use Schnipper's Quality Kitchen in Times Square. They gave me twenty minutes, and yet we stayed for two hours. Bello ate three hamburgers. Initially people (including me) were freaked out about him falling, but eventually everyone seemed to forget he was there.

알퐁스 서커스단은 우리가 상상할 수 있는 그 어떤 서커스단과도 다르다. 몬트리올에서 두 시간 떨어진 산속에 사는 그들을 로열 산Mount Royal 에서 만났을 때 그들은 사진 속 포즈 그대로의 삶을 살고 있었다. 맥주를 들이키고, 손으로 말아 피우는 담배를 물고, 도끼를 가지고 놀곤 했다. 내가 그들을 만나자마자 처음 내뱉은 말은 “이거 재미있겠는데!” 였는데 그 말이 딱 맞았다. 나는 그들에게 맥주를 들고 담배를 말면서 나무에 올라가달라고 했다. 날씨가 그렇게 춥지만 않았다면 나는 아직도 그곳에 머물러있을 것이다. 그 정도로 유쾌한 시간이었다.

Cirque Alfonse is unlike any circus troupe you could imagine. They live in the mountains two hours from Montreal, and when I met them on Mount Royal this is exactly what they were doing—drinking beer, smoking rolled cigarettes and playing with axes.

"Well, this will be fun," was the first thing I said to them. I was right.

I grabbed a beer, rolled a cigarette, and asked them to climb a tree. If it wasn't so cold I would still be out there—it was that enjoyable.

조던 매터는 『Dancers Among Us』(2012) 사진집이 뉴욕 타임스 베스트셀러, 반스 앤 노블 최고의 책 등으로 선정되며 주목 받기 시작했다. 존 T. 힐前 예일대 대학원 사진학과 학과장, 로라 부클스허드슨 리버 뮤지엄 큐레이터, 마틴 가서스위스 빈터투어 사진 미술관 큐레이터 등 미술계 전문가들의 찬사를 받았을 뿐만 아니라 2013년 셀렉트 아트 페어, 스펙트럼 아트 페어 등에도 작품이 소개되며 세계적으로 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다. 야구선수와 배우로 활동했던 독특한 이력을 갖고 있는 조던 매터는 사진가인 조부 허버트 매터Herbert Matter 와 영화 감독인 부친 알렉스 매터Alex Matter로부터 예술적 영감을 받았으며, 특히 앙리 카르티에 브레송 Henri Cartier-Bresson의 ‘결정적 순간’에 매료되어 사진에 본격적으로 입문하게 되었다. 2009년 폴 테일러 댄스 컴퍼니를 시작으로 파슨스 댄스 컴퍼니, 아스펜 산타페 발레단, 휴스턴 발레단 등 미국 최고의 발레단과 함께 <Dancers Among Us> 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다.

2013년 뉴욕의 국립무용박물관 National Museum of Dance 에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 아시아에서는 최초로 사비나미술관에서 개인전 <우리 삶이 춤이 된다면 Dancers Among Us>을 열었다. 조던 매터는 전시 기간 중 내한하여 한국 정상급 발레리나 김주원성신여대 교수, 발레리노 이정윤 국립발레단 수석무용수, 발레리노 박종석펜실베니아 발레단 무용수 등 국내 정상급 무용수와 함께 광화문, 경복궁, 서울역 등 서울의 대표적인 장소를 배경으로 프로젝트를 진행한 바 있다.

2013년 겨울, 공연 차 뉴욕에 방문한 캐나다 퀘벡 주의 엘로와즈 서커스단 Cirque eloize 과의 만남을 계기로 새로운 프로젝트 <Circus Among Us>를 시작하였다. 이후 프랑스 출신의 월드 폴 World Pole 챔피언이자 세계 최고의 서커스단 중 하나인 태양의 서커스Cirque Soleil 에서 솔로이스트로 활약한 공중곡예사 에두아르 두와예Edouard Doye, 타임지에서 선정한 미국 최고의 광대인 벨로 녹 Bello Nock 등과 환상적인 콜라보레이션을 성공적으로 마무리했다. <Circus Among Us> 작품들은 2014년 사비나미술관 두 번째 전시에서 국내 최초로 공개된다.

Jordan Matter 1966, New York

Jordan Matter came into the spotlight after the publication on his photography project 『Dancers Among Us』(2012) became a New York Times Best Seller and Barnes and Noble’s Best Book of the Year.

He received numerous interests from media all over the world and was praised by curators and critics such as John T. Hill professor, Yale University, Photography Department, Laura Vookles chief curator, Hudson River Museum, and Martin Gasser curator, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland and was realized as an internationally acclaimed artist.

He has a unique background worked as a baseball player and actor. His great inspiration came from his family—his grandfather, Herbert Matter was a photographer, and father, Alex Matter is a movie director. He was drawn by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s "Decisive Moment" and entered into the world of photography. He started with photographing Paul Taylor Dance Company in 2009, and since then he has been working on "Dancers Among Us" project with the best ballet companies in America including Parsons Dance Company, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and Houston Ballet etc.

In 2013, he had a solo exhibition at National Museum of Dance in New York and a solo exhibition "Dancers Among Us" at Savina Museum of Contemporary Art which was the first solo exhibition in Asia.

While Savina Museum of Contemporary Art was showing his works, he visited Seoul and photographed the notable Korean dancers such as Kim JooWon professor, Sungshin Women’s University, Lee JeongYunprimo ballerino, Korean National Ballet,

and Park JongSuk Pennsylvania Ballet at the historical sites like Gwanghwamun and

Gyeongbokgung Palace. Many people remarked that his pictures taken at such beautiful sites touched their hearts with humor and artistic talent. He met with citizens of Seoul and shoot in real time during "Seoul Dance Project" which Seoul Cultural Foundation hosted and many fans were enthusiastic about his delightful pictures.

Matter met with Cirque Eloize from Quebec, Canada, while they were traveling in New York and started a new project "Circus Among Us" in the winter 2013. He successfully collaborated with Edouard Doye who is the World Pole champion and aerialist for one of the best circus groups, Cirque du Soleil, and Bello Nock who was well known as the best clown in America. The results from "Circus Among u s" project will be premiered at Savina Museum of Contemporary Art for his second solo exhibition in Seoul, Korea.
