Opening an Exhibition '60sec ART'

The Savina Museum of Contemporary Art holds a special exhibition, '60sec ART' in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

'60sec ART' reflects the idea of transient temporality in modern society where people organize and live a life in hours, minutes, and seconds. The exhibition comprised of short films, installations, sculptures, animations, webto ons, so cial me dia-base d p o etr y, and etc presents the Museum's goal and c ore values. Savina Museum has been holding multidisciplinary themed exhibitions and introducing prolific artists with unique aesthetics and perspectives through invitational solo exhibitions. Also the Museum has been s e r v i n g a s a n e d u c a t i o n c e n t e r fo r p e o p l e t o e n h a n c e t h e i r knowledge, connoisseurship, and creativity. With Museum’ s well develop e d exhibition c onc epts and distinctive c omp etitiveness with other museums, last January Savina Museum was repor ted a s o n e o f t h re e o u t s t a n d i n g Ko re a n p r i va t e c o n t e m p o ra r y a r t museums in 'Private Museum Report' co-researched by Art Market Monitor of ARTRON (AMMA) and the Hong Kong-based company Larry’ s List that holds database of 3000 international art collectors.

Savina Museum will keep making an effort to be a small but strong museum. Sincerely I hope you have a great interest in '60sec ART'.

사비나미술관은 개관 20주년 기념 기획전으로 '60sec ART' 를 개최합니다.

'60sec ART' 는 시 단위에서 분 단위로, 더 나아가 초 단위로 삶을 계획하고 움직이는 현 시대를 반영한 찰나의 시간성에 대한 다양한 사유를 담은 전시입니다. 영상, 설치, 조각, 영화, 애니메이션, 웹툰, SNS시(詩)등으로 구성된 이번 전시는 사비나미술관의 목표와 핵심가치를 담고 있습니다. 사비나미술관은 일반인들의 예술적 소양과 심미안, 창의성을 길러주는 평생학교 의 역할을 수행하는 한편, 융복합 기획전 및 역량 있는 작가들의 초대전을 개최하고 있습니다. 전시콘셉트 개발과 타 미술관과의 차별화된 경쟁력을 통해 지난 1월 세계적으 로 3,000명의 미술품 컬렉터 데이터베이스를 보유한 래리스 리스트(Larry's List)와 아트론이 공동 조사한 '사립미술관보고서'에서 국내 우수 미술관 3개 가운데 하나로 선정되는 성과를 거뒀습니다. 앞으로도 사비나미술관은 작지만 강한 미술관으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 더욱 노력하겠습니다. 60초, 그 짧은 시간 속의 시간성에 대하여

사비나미술관이 개관 20주년을 맞이해 마련한 <60sec Art> 전은 바쁜 현대인의 생활 속에 깊게 파고든 모바일 기기의 활용이 우리의 사고와 삶의 방식을 어떻게 변화시키고 있는지 현대미술을 통해 되짚어 보기 위해 마련한 전시이다. 불과 10여 년 만에 스마트폰은 전화기로서의 기능을 넘어 개인 적, 사회적 관계망 형성에 큰 영향을 미치며 현대인의 필수품이 되었다. 뿐만 아니라 일 처리와 여가 시간을 활용한 게임 및 쇼핑이 가능해지면서 현대인의 생활방식을 더욱 초스피드화, 초단편화 시키 고 이에 따른 온라인 콘텐츠도 다양하게 생성되고 있다. 이러한 웹을 기반으로 보급되는 다양한 콘텐 츠는 바쁘고 고독한 현대인의 삶 속에 밀착된 채 찰나적 즐거움 속의 강렬한 메세지와 감동을 선사 해 현대인을 빠르고 간편한 초단편 웹세상에 빠져들게 한다. 본 전시 <60sec ART>는 이러한 찰나적

순간에 즐길 수 있는 콘텐츠의 생성, 그만큼 인스턴트식 소비에 익숙해진 이 시대의 현상을 살펴볼 수 있도록 시각 예술가들의 작품과 대중문화 콘텐츠를 함께 보여준다. 시단위로, 분단위로 계획된 하루 24시간은 현대인들에게 결코 긴 시간이 아닐 것이다. 정신적으로, 육체적으로 시간에 쫓기는 현대인 들은 생활 속 자투리 시간을 활용해 정보를 생성하고 소비하면서‘스압’(스크롤 압박)을 느낄 만큼 점점 시선을 사로잡는 강렬한 이미지와 짧은 스토리에 익숙해지고 있다. 이는‘짤방(아무런 상관없는 사진이나 동영상을 올리는 것을 말함)’이나‘움짤(움직이는 짤방의 줄임말)’과 같은 새로운 이미지로 의 소통방식을 생성하게 했고, 이러한 정보의 변형과 왜곡으로 만들어진 돌연변이 정보가 온라인을 떠돌아다니며 우리에게 본질에 대한 오독(誤讀)을 일삼게 한다.

1-오러리 모델(orrery model) 태양계나 행성의 공전을 설명하기 위해 만들 어진 기계

전시에 참여하는 작가들은 현대인들이 정보를 인식하고 전달, 소통하는 방식의 변화에 주목하고, 이러한 초스피드 시대에 일어나는 다양한 사회적 현상과‘시간’에 대한 개념을 다시 환기시키는 것 에 초점을 맞춘다. 가령‘시간성’에 대한 개인적, 사회적, 물리학적인 방식으로의 접근을 시도하거 나 SNS에 의한 정보의 습득과 확산 방식에 대한 현상을 포착하는가 하면, 시간의 속성을 초자연적으 로 접근해 개념에 대한 본질적인 물음을 던지기도 한다. 참여작가 8인의 작품을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 먼 저 이예승 작가는 비계구조를 이용한 영상작품 <비계장치>를 선보인다. 인터넷에 떠다니는 단편화 된 이미지가 구조물을 오르내리며 나타났다가 사라지고 겹쳐지기를 반복하면서 관람객을 비추기도 한 다. 관객은 새롭게 재구성되는 이야기를 응시하면서 알 수 없는 무수히 많은 이미지 속을 서성거리 는 자신을 발견 하게 된다. 이는 이미지 홍수 속에서 의미를 상실한 채 파편화 되어가는 이미지, 그 안에 살고 있는 우리의 모습이기도 하다. 이러한 파편화된 이미지는 방&리의 작품 <불량화소>에서 도 찾아볼 수 있다. 전시장 벽면에 알아볼 수 없는 이미지가 0.16초 간격으로 쉼 없이 깜빡이며 관객 의 눈을 피로하게 만든다. 관객은 이내 전시장 중앙에 세워진 작은 모니터에서 생성되는 이미지가 캠 코더와 빔 프로젝터를 통해 송출된 이미지임을 발견하게 된다. 이는 우리가 몇 단계를 거쳐 받아들 이는 정보의 프로세스와 비슷하다. 작가는 그 과정을 통해 정보가 손쉽게 왜곡되거나 희석될 수 있

2-조이트로프(zoetrope [zóuitròup])는 영화가 발 명되기 이전에 사용된, 착 시 원리를 활용한 많은 애 니메이션 장난감 중 하나이 다. 조이트로프는 원기둥 모 양의 통으로 이루어져 있으 며, 원기둥에는 일정 간격으 로 틈새가 여려 개 갈라져 있다. 원기둥 안쪽에는 그림 띠를 둘러 붙였다. 틈새에 눈높이를 맞추고 원기둥을 회전시키면 그림 띠가 회전 하는 것처럼 보인다.

는 이 시대의 현상, 결국 우주 속 먼지 같이 사라지지 않고 웹세상 어딘가를 부유하는 수많은 데이터 를 은유적으로 보여준다. 인세인박 작가는 이러한 현상을 구체적인 예시를 통해 보여주고 있다. 작품 <예수처럼 죽다>는 2007년 버지니아 공대 총기 난사 사건을 소재로, 총기난사범인 조승희가 인터넷에서 영웅, 신격화되어 가는 상황을 추적한 설치작품이다. 작가는 인터넷에 떠다니는 수많은 정보들이 불 특정 다수에 의해 어떻게 편집되고 변형되는지를 보여주며 진실과 거짓이 불명확해 지는 현시대에 대해 이야기 한다. <WELCOME TO HEAVEN>이라고 쓰여진 네온 글자의 'L'은 깜빡이길 반복하며 의미전달을 달리한다. 여기에 사용된 경쾌하고 발랄한 노란색은 이 시대에 추도와 애도의 의미로 사용되고 있음을 상징적으로 보여준다. 이는 나아가 관객에게 사회에 대한 우리의 불신과 불안함이 지속되는 현장을 보여 주는 듯 하다.

강상우 작가는‘초단편’의 가장 상징적 콘테츠인 광고를 모티프로 삼았다. 1974년 방영되었던 흑백 광고‘손오공과 자야’는 22초의 시간 동안 캐릭터들의 강렬한 이미지와 귀여운 말투로 시청자의 눈을 사로잡는다. 특히 광고 마지막에 손오공이 눈동자를 빠르게 굴리며 판매실적을 강조하는데 작가는 이 빠르게 움직이는 애니메이션을 발췌해 인터렉티브 입체작품으로 제작한다. 우리는 몸이 여러 개로 분열되는 만화 속 손오공이기를 상상한 적이 있지 않았던가? 관객이 다가서면 빠르게 눈동자를 굴리는 손오공은 강박증에 시달리는 현대인의 심리상태, 그리고 멀티태스킹을 요구 받는 현대인의 모습처럼 비쳐진다. 김가람 작가는‘댓글’을 이용한 음원 작품 을 선보인다. 작가는 실시간으로 소통이 가능하고 익명성이 보장되는 인터넷 댓글이 대중의 생각과 의식을 반영하고 있음에 주목한다. 매달 정치, 경제, 시회, 문화를 막론한 주요 사건의 뉴스기사에 달린 댓글을 이용해 디지털 싱글 앨범을 발매했다. 전시장에는 성추행 사건, 땅콩리턴, 정부의 메르스 늦장 대응, 역사 교과서 국정화, 옥시 연구보고서 조작파문을 포함해 지금까지 발매한 25개의 음원을 들을 수 있다. 작가의 본 프로젝트는 현시대상을 반영하는 흥미로운 실험으로 앞으로도 계속 진행될 것이다.

심래정, 손경환 작가와 숭실대학교 크로스디자인랩은 일상에서의 시간성을 환기시킨다. 먼저 심래정 작가는 전시 기간인 52일 동안만 시한부 삶을 사는 작품 <윤규>를 통해 우리가 누군가를 마주하는 찰나적 순간, 그리고 기억하는 시간, 인생의 유한함을 되새겨 보 게 한다. 우리의 하루가 24시간이라고 할 때 윤규의 하루는 10,800시간, 즉 450일이다. 관객은 전시장에서 소소한 에피소드로 하루 하루 늙어가는 '오늘'의 윤규를 만나게 된다. 핸드드로잉 애니메이션으로 제작된 심래정 작가의 <윤규>는 오랜만에 만나는 지인의 얼 굴에서 시간의 흐름을 느꼈던 경험을 상기시키며 우리의 일생을 52일의 압축된 시간으로 되돌아보게 한다. 손경환 작가는‘실시간’의 개념을 빛의 속도에 비유한다. 작가는 빛이 지구에서 달까지 도달하는 장면을 오러리 모델(orrery model) 1 방식과 이것을 실시간으로 송출한 영상으로 보여준다. 작가는 1.3초 동안 지구에 달이 도달하는 영상으로 빛의 속도를 인식시킨다. 눈깜짝할 사이라고도 할 수 있는 1.3초는 현대의 정보통신 이용의 실시간(real-time)이라고 느낄 수 있는 영역이기도 하다. 작가는 이번 전시에 출품된 작품에서 빛의 속도에 대한 실험을 설치작품으로 보여주는데 그밖에 이론적으로 증명된 체감할 수 없는 물리학적인 이론을 시각화 하는 탐구를 끊임없이 진행하고 있다.

숭실대학교 미디어대학원 크로스디자인랩은 조이트로프(zoetrope) 2 형식으로 제작한 <시간기계>를 출품한다. 시계를 형상화한 이 작 품은 빛과 동력장치를 이용한 착시효과를 통해 시간에 대한 개념을 새롭게 시각화한다. 기계가 빠르게 회전하면서 숫자는 0에서 99까 지 시계소리와 함께 속도감 있게 움직이며 우리가 알고 있는 60초, 60분, 24시간 이라는 고정된 시간의 개념을 넘어 탈 시간의 개념 을 보여준다. 그밖에 전시장에 초단편 영화와 애니메이션, 웹툰, SNS시 등 모바일 환경에 맞게 짧은 시간, 압축된 형태로 제작된 콘텐 츠를 소개하면서 현시대의 초단편 콘텐츠의 다양한 현상을 확인할 수 있도록 하였다. 더 도슨트는 초단편 다큐멘터리를 제작하는 그룹 이다. 이번 전시에서 그들은 그동안 제작한 다큐멘터리의 한 장면을 렌티큘러로 제작해 GIF파일(움직이는 이미지)의 원리를 아날로그 방식으로 보여준다. 또한 러닝타임 10초에서 10분 내의 애니메이션과 영화 120여 편이 상영된다. 관객은 본 전시를 통해 작은 모니터 화면으로 자투리 시간을 쪼개어 감상했던 방식에서 벗어나 보다 집중할 수 있는 전시 형태로의 감상환경 안에서 각 작품에 담 긴 시청각적 즐거움과 새로운 시각으로의 감상을 경험하길 기대한다. 또한 이번 전시가 개인적, 사회적 경험 혹은 현실과 가상의 시 간성에 대한 다양한 사유와 일분일초를 다투며 급박하게 살고 있는 현대인들의 삶의 형태를 되새기며‘짧은 시간 속 긴 여운’을 느낄 수 있는 기회가 되길 기대한다.

60 Second, About the Temporality in the Short Moment

The Savina Museum of Contemporary Art presents 60 Sec Art to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of its founding. This exhibition shows how mobile devices are embedded deeply in busy modern life and have changed our perspective and way of life. In only ten years, the smartphone became a must-have item, going beyond the means to make a simple phone call, and has impacted how we form personal and social networks. In addition, this technology allowed a new speed and ef ficiency, making it possible to work from anywhere, shop online, and ef for tlessly engage in leisure activities. Webbased content envelope busy, lonely people in brief, fast-moving, and ever-changing emotional episodes with a strong message. These passing pleasures are addictive. In this exhibition, 60 Sec Art, the modern phenomenon of short-lived pleasures and instant

consumption are examined by the selected artists’works and excerpts from mass media.

The perception of units of time has changed along with technology, as people feel greater pressure to consume and create in shorter intervals due to our increased comfort with and desensitization to condensed media.

It is urgent to swipe and scroll as fast as possible.

Internet memes, still and moving (Chalbang and Umchal in Korean), are modified and manipulated, leading to a mutated understanding of the true nature of underlying concepts.

This new way of communication is concise to the point of misrepresentation.

The exhibiting artists focus on changes in the perception, sharing, and communication of information.

They also provoke audiences into rethinking the concept of time and social

events in a fast society.

For example, one artist approaches the concept of temporality

through a p ersonal, so ciolo gical, and physical c ontex t, while another captures the phenomenon of the acquisition and proliferation of information by social media. Another artist asks fundamental questions about the characteristics of time with a transcendental perspective. Eight exhibiting artists’works are as following: Ye Seung Lee shows Scaffold Scenery, a media art installation in a scaffolding structure. Fragmented online images are projected on the top and bot tom of the installation. The images are appearing and disappearing repeatedly and overlap each other while also showing the image of audiences. While looking at the newly arranged imagery, audiences find themselves exploring numerous unknown stories. It is a reflection of us living in the flood of images and losing the meaning of individual images. These fragmented images can be also found in the work by Bang & Lee, Defective Pixel. On the wall of the exhibition space, unknown images are flickering every 0.16 second, tiring the viewer’s eyes. We find out that the image on the small monitor in the center of the exhibition space was transmitted from a camcorder to a projector. This signal chain mirrors the steps through which we receive

The artist metaphorically shows the modern idea that information can be easily modified and diluted, and that a voluminous amount of data floats around the web and never disappears, like dust in the universe. Insane Park illuminates a similar phenomenon with a specific example. The installation work, Dying Like Jesus, follows the story of the Virginia Tech shooting incident and shows how the killer, Seunghee Cho, was worshipped as a hero and legend on the internet. Park shows how information on the internet has distorted the meaning of that action, exposing the distrust and anxiety embedded in our society. In the neon sign that reads“Welcome to Heaven”, the letter‘L’is flickering and changing the meaning of the sentence as it goes dark intermittently. The symbolic yellow color of the neon sign, which symbolized joy and delight in the past, is now the symbol of condolence in Korean society.

Sang Woo Kang uses a television commercial, the ongoing symbol of intensive time-compressed information, to describe modern society’s obsession with efficiency and multitasking. In the 22-second black and white commercial aired in 1974, Sun Wukong (the mythological Monkey King) and Jaya charmed viewers with strong images and cute voices. The Monkey King is known in the East to be an excellent multi-tasker and he can create clones of himself to delegate tasks.

Don’t we all want this power? The artist extracted a fast-paced animation of Sun Wukong quickly moving his eyes while declaring sales results from the end of the commercial and made it into an interactive installation piece. When the viewer approaches, the eyes move. Ga Ram Kim presents an ongoing experimental sound project incorporating comments found on the internet. These anonymous comments reflect the thoughts and opinions of the public on such issues as sexual harassment, government handling of the MERS epidemic, history textbook revisions, the Oxy company scandal, and the“nut rage” airline incident. Every month, Kim released a song using comments from political, economic, social, and cultural online news sites. Twenty-five songs are compiled for this exhibit.

Rae Sim, Kyungwhan Sohn, and Cross Design Lab remind us to be conscious of time in our daily lives. Rae Sim shows uuii, a fictional character, who lives only during the exhibition period of 52 days. Through this character, Sim forces us into the moment, and makes us realize our mortality and the nature of memory. One day is twenty-four hours for us, however, uuii’ s day is 10,800 hours, 450 days. The audience meets the uuii of today, whose day is filled with mundane episodes of life and aging. A hand-drawn animation, uuii recalls the experience of meeting a friend who we have not seen for a long time and then suddenly realize how much time has gone by. His work makes us look back on our lives through uuii’ s condensed 52 days. Kyungwhan Sohn recasts the concept of real-time in modern communication in terms of the speed of light. Sohn uses an orrery model 1 and a projected real-time video showing the relative positions of the earth and moon in 1.3-second increments to help the viewer visualize the speed of light. In modern communication the delay caused by light travel time is like the blink of an eye. This physical experience of the speed of light is part of his larger goal of bringing scientific concepts into the visual realm.

Cross Design Lab at the Soongsil University presents Time Machine, a clock-based installation that uses a motor and light to create optical illusions that allow the viewer to visualize a new way of perceiving time. While the zoetrope 2 - like machine spins at high speed, the number on the machine increments from 0 to 99 with the sound of clock. It breaks the conventional metrics of time, like 60 seconds, 60 minutes, and 24 hours, and recasts the fixed time concept.

The exhibition includes micro-short films, animations, webtoons, and social media-based poetry, which are created to be suitable for mobile devices. The current web trend toward mobile-friendliness favors short time-based media and condensed contents. The DOCENT group produces micro-short documentary films, and for this exhibition, sliced segments from these films into lenticular images as an analog representation of an animated GIF image. One hundred and twenty animations and movies in the range of 10 seconds to 10 minutes will be shown so that the audience, who is accustomed to watching such content casually on a small screen, will now focus on the larger visual and emotional experience in the exhibition space. Topics covered include personal and social experience, real and fictional temporality, and modern lifestyle. We hope that this exhibition offers an opportunity for audiences, who fight consistently to keep up with busy modern life, to think about the long lasting experience of a moment.

초단편의 상징적인 매체는 TV광고다. 광고의‘짧은 시간’ 에 농축되어야 하는‘강렬함’ 이라 는 속성은 변하지 않는다. 작가는 1974년에 제작된 광고의 한 장면을 입체작품으로 재구 성했다. 22초의 영상 속에 손오공이‘250만개 판매 돌파’ 라는 문구와 함께 눈동자를 빠르 게 굴리는 장면은 작가에게 광고라는 매체의 속성을 상징적으로 드러내는 강렬한 인상을 남겼다. 작가는 초단편 콘텐츠로서의 광고 속의 캐릭터‘손오공’ 에서 이시대 멀티태스킹이 가능한 현대인과 초스피드를 강요하는 현대사회의 병적인 모습을 포착한다.

The television commercial is an ongoing symbol of intensive time-compressed information. Sangwoo Kang remade a scene from a 1974 commercial into a three-dimensional work. In a twenty-second video, the image of Sonokong (the mythological Monkey King) quickly rolling his eyes is accompanied by ‘Breaking 2,500,000 sales!’ the line This image revealing the very nature of

the medium, the commercial, left a strong impression on Kang. He picked the Sun Wukong character to maximize the symbolic nature of the compressed contents and to reflect the modern tendency toward multitasking. It captures the oppressive side of modern society forcing its pace on individuals.

강상우는 홍익대 회화과를 졸업하고 네덜란드 샌드버그 인스티튜트에서 순수미술 전공으로 졸업하였다. 그의 작업은 기억 속의 특정한 환상적 이미지와 일화들을 다룬다. 그의 작업세계 안에서 환상은‘현 실의 이면을 비추는 거울’ 로 가정한다. 이러한 환상적 이미지와 경험들이 현실 속에서 어떻게 대응하 거나 변형되는지 관찰하거나 실제와 환상이 벌이는 각축상태를 작품을 통해 드러내고자 한다. 이러 한 탐구는 TV 시트콤, 아동심리 프로그램, 만화영화, 조립식 장난감의 추억 등을 소재로 입체, 설치, 페인팅, 드로잉의 방법으로 작업화 된다.

Sangwoo Kang graduated with a major in Painting from Hongik University and from Sandberg Institute, Fine Arts Department. His work focuses on specific fantastic imageries and stories in memories. In his work, the fantasy is assumed as“a mirror reflecting the other side of reality.” He observes how these fantastic images and experiences are applied and modified in reality. He also reveals the conflicted situation between reality and fantasy in his work. This survey is made up of threedimensional works, installations, paintings, and drawings based on TV sitcoms, child psychology programs, comics, and the nostalgia of toys.

‘SOUND PROJECT’ 는 인터넷 '댓글' 문화에 대한 관심에서 시작되었다. 익명성이 보장된다고 여겨지는 인터넷의 특성은 대중들의 여과 없는 반응을 이끌어 냈다. 최근 몇 년간 한국에서는 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화를 막론하고 이러한 댓글이 여론을 형성하는 중요한 흐름으로 자리 잡았다. 매달의 이슈가 되는 사건(기사)에 따라 인터넷 가상공간에서 이루어지는 대중들의 반응은 무엇보다 솔직했으며, 즉각적이고 단편적이었다. 이러한‘댓글’ 은 SOUND PROJECT의 가사로 구성되어 주제를 이루며 1분가량의 음원으로 재탄생 되어 다시 대중과 만난다.

‘Sound Project’came from the artist's interest in internet commenting culture and its unfiltered, anonymous

nature. In Korea these comments have taken on increasing importance in recent years across all topics including politics, economy, society, and culture. The reactions from internet users to trending issues have been honest, immediate, and fragmented. These comments have been reborn as the lyrics of the oneminute‘Sound Project.’

김가람은 이화여자대학교 회화판화(서양화)과를 졸업한 뒤, 2011년 런던 첼시예술대학에서 순수미 술로 석사과정을 마쳤다. 작가는 각 사회가 내포하고 있는 문화, 사회적 이슈들을 다양한 방식으로 드러낸다. 이로 인해 야기되는 변화와 차이점을 설치, 퍼포먼스, 미디어 매체를 사용하여 유희적인 실험으로 풀어내면서 감상자에게 공감할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 2016년 개인전 <ACS#2: the AGENDA hair salon, 2016 Düsseldorf-Projekt>를 비롯하여, MMCA 창동레지던시 <BARE_亮 [ABOUT KOREA]>(2015), 2014년 <Daily Reflections>전 외 다수의 단체전에 참여하였으며, 2015 MMCA 고양레지던시 입주작가로 활동하였다.

Ga Ram Kim received B.A. from Ewha Womans Universit y, the depar tment of Painting and Printing (Western Painting) and M.F.A. from Chelsea Art University, Fine Art Department, in London in 2011. Kim uses diverse methods to reveal cultural and social issues, interweaving changes and differences in the installation, performance, and media art as if they are playful experiments to provide opportunities for the audiences to understand the meaning. Kim had solo exhibitions such as ACS#2: the AGENDA hair salon, 2016 D ü sseldorf-Projekt(2016), BARE亮[About Korea](2015) and Daily Reflections(2014) at MMCA Changdong Residency, as well as a number of group exhibitions. Kim was selected as the Artist in Residency in 2015 from the MMCA Goyang Residency Program.

60개의 이미지는 10초 동안 생성되었다가 이내 사라지길 반복한다. 이미지는 NASA의 ‘public domain’에서 임의로 수집된 사진들로 자유로운 사용과 변형이 가능한 소스들이 다. 작은 스크린 화면을 순식간에 스쳐 지나가는 이미지는 실시간 카메라를 통해 큰 화면 으로 프로젝션 된다. 작은 스크린의 성능은 우수하지 않으며 속성은 축소되어 대표적인 이 미지를 알아볼 수 있을 정도의 정보만 제공한다. 이 오래된‘관습적인 세팅’은 관점과 방 향을 결정하는 태도의 아이러니를 드러내며 일종의‘불량 화소’와 같이 검은 화면 위의 작 은 픽셀처럼 불편하게 반짝인다. 마치 암흑 속 먼지와 같이 이미지의‘제작’과정에서 이러 한 장치는 기본값(default setting: 자동으로 할당되는 설정)으로 존재한다.

Sixty images are visible for 10 seconds each before disappearing. They are photos randomly collected from the NASA public domain, which are free to use and modify. The flashing image on a small screen is projected onto a large screen through a real-time camera, which results in a degraded enlargement with significant details no longer recognizable. This disconcerting viewing experience stands in stark contrast to the modern ideal of definition and clarity. The excessive reproduction and duplication contributes to overflow of information and the news media fails to deliver correct information about the event and situation themselves. In this process of image‘production’ , the mechanism exists in a default setting like‘dust in the dark’ .

방&리는 방자영과 이윤준으로 구성된 2인 콜렉티브로, 뉴 미디어, 디자인, 리서치를 기반으로 한 설치 프로젝트를 공동으로 진행해 오고 있다. 퍼포먼스를 동반한 인터랙티브 미디어 아트 설치를 시작 으로 키네틱 라이트, 만질 수 있는 세라믹 악기를 이용한 작업에서 가변적 스크린플레이(variable screenplay)에 의한 데이터 프로세싱과 앗상블라주, 비디오 모자이크 영상에 이르기까지 여러 매체 를 다루고 있다. 대부분의 주제는 부조리한 상황이나 모순과 관련되어 역사적 자료와 허구적 속성을 통합, 우정과 협업의 개념을 재해석한 설치로 반영된다. 방&리의 작업은 독일 칼스루에 ZKM 미디어 아트센터, 스페인 세비야 비엔날레, 영국 브리스틀 워터쉐드, 이탈리아 로마 21세기 국립현대미술관, 백남준아트센터, 미디어시티서울, 아르코미술관, 아트센터나비, 대안공간루프 등에서 전시되었다.

Bang & Lee is an artist duo formed by Jayoung Bang and Yunjun Lee, whose work combines art, design and research. Often concerned with the theme of absurdity and irony, their installations involve assemblage, interactive light sculptures, tangible ceramic instruments, stage technology geared toward immersive media, computergenerated montage, and video mosaics. Various historical references, fictions, and emerging notions of social media are incorporated. Many of their primary projects engage in a variable screenplay, not only with interactive media in a theater or stage, but also within the virtual world, using hypertext to develop networkingbased events with emphasis on their particular .

작가가 제작한 가상의 인물‘윤규’의 하루는 15초이며, 52일의 전시기간동안 시한부 삶을 산다. 인간이 80세까지 산다고 가정한다면, 17세부터 80세까지 윤규의 하루는 450일이 다. 전시장에서 매일 다른 얼굴과 상황을 보여주며, 빠르게 늙어가는 윤규를 통해 찰나로 지나가는 삶을 되새겨 볼 수 있다. 전시장을 방문한 관객은 오늘의 윤규를 만날 수 있으며 지난 시간의 윤규는 블로그를 통해 볼 수 있다.

Rae SIM reated a fictional figure, uuii, whose day is fifteen seconds. His entire adult life span is confined to the 52 days of the exhibition period, starting at age seventeen and ending at eighty. Hypothetically, if a human being lives for 80 years, uuii’ s day is the equivalent of 450 days. Audiences can reflect on their lives by observing uuii’ s lightning-fast aging, and his ever-changing face and situation. The audience can meet today’ s uuii while his past can be seen through the blog.

지구에서 달까지 빛의 속도로 걸리는 시간은 1.3초다. 빛의 속도는 전자기파(빛)를 이용하 는 현대의 정보통신에 있어 쌍방향 통신을 주고받을 때 실시간(real-time)이라고 느낄 수 있는 영역이기도 하다. 화면에 보이는 1.3초 마다 점점 가까워지는 지구 위 달의 이미지는 이러한 빛의 속도를 눈으로 인식할 수 있도록 제작한 것이다. 작가는 이미지와 실재의 관 계를 지구본을 관측하는 카메라, 그리고 이것이 실시간으로 송출되는 방식을 오러리 모델 (orrery model, 태양계나 행성의 공전을 설명하기 위해 만들어진 기계)로 보여주고자 한다.

It takes 1.3 seconds for light to reach earth from the moon. Electromagnetic waves moving at this same speed are the basis for modern two-way communications on earth, but the proximity of sender and receiver makes the time delay imperceptible. The image of the moon on the screen, getting closer every 1.3 seconds, makes it possible for human eyes to perceive the speed of the light. Sohn tries to show the relationship between the image and reality through a camera observing a globe and an orrery model (an orrery is a mechanical model of the solar system that illustrates the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons) transmitting the image in real time.

손경환은 국민대학교 미술학부 회화과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 회화전공 박사과정을 수료했다. 회화와 다양한 매체를 이용해 초망막적인 우주의 이미지에 대한 의문과 초월적인 대상에 대한 인간 경험 의 한계에서 느끼는 숭고함을 표현하고자 노력한다. 이미지와 실재, 인간이 인식할 수 있는 영역 과 그 외부의 경계에 대한 집요한 탐색이 작업의 바탕이며, 선택한 대상의 수많은 잔상들을 재구 축한 밀도 있는 화면은 작품을 하나의 사건으로 보이게 한다. 현재 인간이 느끼는 여러 가지 한계를 실험하기 위해 결성한 시각예술 프로젝트팀인 머머링프로젝트(murmuring project)로 활동 중이다.

Sohn focuses on expressing the sublime human experience when faced with the limitations of questions about the universe beyond visibility and transcendental existence. The intensive search about image and reality, the cognitive realm, and the boundaries of the outside world are the foundation of Sohn’ s art. His dense screen, reconstructed with numerous images of selected objects, makes his work feel like an event. He formed a visual art project team, Murmuring Project, to experiment with various limitations of the human experience.

사람들은 모바일 기기를 통해서 간접적으로 세상을 바라보는 것에 익숙하다. 이예승의 작업 은 이러한 과잉되고 한없이 가벼이 사라져 버리는, 휘발적인 감상의 방식을 비계구조라는 임시적 구조체를 통해서 새로운 사유의 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 앞과 뒤, 위와 아래를 넘나들면서 구조물에 맵핑된 단편화된 이미지는 겹치고 해체되며 온라인상의 그것처럼 순식간 에 새로운 구조를 만들고 이야기를 재구성 한다. 언제든 해체될 수 있는 임시 구조물에 맵핑 된 이미지는 카메라를 통해 비추는 관객의 모습과 겹쳐져 현실과 가상을 모호하게 만든다.

People experience much of the world now indirectly through mobile devices.

Yeseung Lee brings a new perspective to this reality through a temporary scaffolding structure made up of excessive and transient elements reflecting the short-lived appreciation of the audience. Overlapping and deconstructed images are scattered across the front, back, top and underside of each panel. Like images and information online, images projected on Lee’ s ephemeral structure create new images and rearrange themselves. They recreate a new story and take audiences who stand in front of the work to a new place. The scaffold used in a construction site is available to be dissembled and reconstructed anytime.

This temporary structure symbolizes the online environment, which is possible to edit. The mapped images make the reality and fiction vague as the images of audiences are projected on the structure as well.

이예승은 이화여자대학교 미술대학과 동대학원에서 동양화를 전공한 후 미국으로 건너가 시카고 아트인스티튜트에서 미디어 설치 공부하고 석사학위를 받았다. 가상과 현실의 경계를 혼동케 하는 거대 미디어 설치 작업을 통해 동시대를 감각하는 인간의 인지 방식과 미디어 환경 속에서 우리가 직면하고 있는 다양한 사회적 현상들에 대한 질문을 던져오고 있다. 수묵 드로잉과 손 자수 등 섬세 한 아날로그적 매체에서부터 영상, 키네틱 오브제나 피지컬 컴퓨팅을 이용한 디지털적인 매체에 이르 기까지 거침없이 표현의 경계를 넘나든다. 쿤스트독(2013), 보안여관(2014), 갤러리 조선(2015), 아트사이드 갤러리(2016) 등에서 개인전을 열었다. 광주아시아문화전당(2015), 대안공간 루프 (2013), 서울시립미술관(2014), 금호미술관(2011), 포르타밧 미술관(2014, 아르헨티나) 등 국내외 유수 미술관의 기획전에 참여한 바 있다. 서울시립미술관 신진작가로 선정 된 바 있으며, MMCA 창동레지던시(2011)를 거쳐 서울시립미술관 난지미술창작스튜디오(2013), 금천예술공장(2015), 아시아문화전당 ACT Lab(2016) 등에서 작업을 진행하였다.

Yeseung Lee received B.A. and M.F.A. from the Ewha Womans University in Oriental Painting. Lee studied media and installation ar t at the Ar t Institute of Chicago and received a master’ s degree in Fiber & Material Studies. Through large-scale media installation works bridging reality and fiction, Lee has been questioning the human perception in the modern time and the various social issues we face in an environment surrounded by media. She freely crosses over different genres from the time-consuming and delicate analog works such as ink drawings and embroidered works to the digital works using the physical computing, video, and kinetic objects. Lee has had solo exhibitions at Kunst Doc(2013), Boan Inn(2013), Gallery Chosun(2015), Artside Gallery(2016) and group exhibitions at Gwangju Asia Cultural Center(2015), Alternative Space Loop(2013), Seoul Museum of Art(2014), Kumho Museum of Art(2011), Fortabat Museum(2014, Argentina). She was awarded a Young Ar tist Award from Seoul Museum of Ar t and selected for the MMCA Changdong Residency(2011), SeMA Nanji Residency Studio(2013), Fatory(2015), and Asia Cultural Center ACT Lab(2016).

인터넷에 떠다니는 정보는 불특정 다수에 의해 편집되고 변형되어 또 다른 돌연변이 정보를 생성해 낸다. 이러한 과정은 오늘날 어느 시대 보다 빠르고 크게 확산된다. 인세인박은 2007년 버지니아 공대 총기 난사사건의 범인인 조승희가 영웅화, 신격화 되어가는 상황 을 추적하여, 온라인을 통해 소리 없이 확산되고 변질되는 정보의 오류에 대해 이야기한 다. 모니터에 나오는 영상은 구글과 유튜브 혹은 특정 커뮤니티에서 찾을 수 있는 조승희 사건과 관계된 단편적인 이미지와 짧은 영상, 즉 GIF 파일로 이루어진‘움짤’이나‘짤방’ 을 기반으로 편집한 영상이다. 또한 즐거움, 유쾌함을 상징하던‘노랑’이라는 색이‘애도’ 를 상징하게 된 한국사회의 모습을 은유적으로 보여준다.

The information on the internet is constantly mutated by an unspecific crowd and its meaning transformed. This process has been growing faster and broader in scale over time. Insane Park investigated the Virginia Tech shooting massacre by Seunghee Cho in 2007 and the subsequent distortion of the meaning of that action. Park talks about the proliferation and degeneration of the error that lead some to view Cho as a hero or legend. The video playing on the monitor is the collection of short images and animated GIF files. They are related to Seunghee Cho incident and found from Google, Youtube, and other community pages. It also metaphorically shows that the yellow which symbolized joy and delight in the past is now the symbol of condolence in Korean society.

Insane Park focuses on images produced by the news media and makes twodimensional, installation, video works. Park’ s previous works critically parody the way the media produces images and manipulates the public. His recent works demonstrate how images are edited without implying any particular meaning. He neither imposes his worldview to his viewers nor clings to any traditional idea of authorship. Insane Park studied Western Painting at Gyeonggi University. His keen eye exposes characteristics of images produced by the mass media in television, movies and the internet. He has had solo exhibitions including The Attack of the Media in 2009 at Shinhan Gallery, M. Idea in 2011 at Arario Gallery, Blame Game in 2012 at Yeongun Museum, and Director’ s Cut in 2014 at Arario Gallery. In 2013, He received the Grand Prize from Etro Art Award, which discovers and sponsors emerging artists.

‘시간기계’ 는 60초=1분, 60분=1시간 이라는 시간을 동적장치를 통해 0에서 99까지의 시간으로 새롭게 제안한다. 기계는 회전시간과 속도, 빛을 이용해 1초에 15프레임을 볼 수 있도록 계산된 착시의 원리를 이용한 조이트로프(zo etrop e)의 형태로 제작되 어 회전 속에서 움직이는 숫자, 흘러가는 시간을 발견할 수 있다. 이는 규칙적인 시계의 움직임 안에 존재하지 않는 제 3의 시간을 보여줌으로써 관객은 기계적인 움직임 속에서 의 무한 확장되는 시간의 개념을 만나게 된다. 절대자의 손과 해시계, 그리고 시계소리를 통해 관객을 인지하지 못하는 시간의 세계로 유도한다.

‘ Time Machine’suggests a new way to measure time in which sixty seconds

no longer must equal one minute, nor does sixty minutes have to equal one hour. Through fifteen frames per second motorized zoetrope-like machine that measures time on a scale from one to ninety-nine, viewers see this moving number - a‘third’time, which does not exist in the movement of AHA Creative Center

a conventional clock. The hand of an absolute being reaching out from a sundial, combined with the sound of the clock lead viewers to a new concept of infinitely expanding time that they had not previously recognized.

Cross Design Lab was formed by Professor Junghwan Sung, Yousuk Kim and Huibeom Yu. The lab works on a number of exhibitions and projects related to media, m e d i a t e c h n o l o g y , a n d re s e a rc h o n n e w c o n t e n t .

P ro fe s s o r S e o n g h a s b e e n a n a l y z i n g m e d i a a n d contents using a hybrid method. He also had many solo exhibitions incorporating optical illusions and 3D printing as well as interactive media. Yousuk Kim is a media artist who sensitively expresses the physical characteristics of light and sound and the relationship of the senses. Huibum Yu is an interactive media designer working with robot technology. He is an expert in media engineering and has experience in creating robotic instruments.

Seoul International Extreme is the first micro-short film festival in Asia begun in 2009 following France and German. Under the slogan, 'Anyone can create movies and watch them everywhere', micro-short movies filled with imagination and creativity reflect modern web culture. 10초 국제 애니메이션 페스티벌은 누구나 10초 분량의 애니메이션 및 영상작품을 출품하고 심사하며 수상할 수 있는, 단 한 명의 탈락자도 없는 시민 참여형 초단편 애니메이션 축제이다. 사진, 만화, 일러스트를 다양한 아이디어를 통해 애니메이션으로 가공하고 창작의 가치를 공유하여 건강한 애니메이션 생태계를 만들고 있다. 본 전시에서는 2011년 부터 2015년까지, 총 5회의 출품작 중 선별된 80편의 작품 을 공개한다.

10 Seconds International Animation Festival is based on the citizens participation. Anyone can submit their 10 second-long animated movie or moving images, and anyone can participate in the jury. All works are included and there is no elimination. This festival promotes the value of creation and offers to build a healthy animation ecosystem through photography, comics, and illustration based on diverse ideas. In this exhibition, eighty selected works from last five editions, 2011-2015, are presented.

이번 전시에 참여한 8편의 영화는 지난 2013년 베니스국제영화제가 70주년을 기념하기 위해 기획된‘베니스 70 : 미래 재장전’ 에 상영된 영화다. 본 전시에서는 70편의 작품 중 대표적인 8편의 영화를 전시장에서 공개한다. 그 외의 작품은 유튜브를 통해 무료로 감상 이 가능하다.

Eight movies in this exhibition were previously screened at the Venice International Film Festival, in a section called Venice 70 : Future Reloaded, to celebrate the 70th Anniversary. These eight important works were selected from seventy works in the section for the exhibition. The rest of works can be viewed on Youtube for free.

‘바보요정 웽’ 은 사람들의 머릿속에 들어가 의도치 않은 실수를 유발하게 하는 바보요정이 있다는 상상으로 시작된 옴니버스 형식의 웹툰이다. 누구나 겪는 일이지만 너무나 사소해서 누구도 꼬집지 않았던 바보 같은 상황 을 담는다. 본 전시에서는‘바보요정 웽’ 의 캐릭터 디자 인가이드 및 웹툰 전편을 공개하였다. 모바일 기기에 최적 화된‘웽툰’ 은 우리의 일상 속 공감과 유머의 코드를 4컷 의 그림 속에 압축적으로 표현하고 있다.

‘It’ s ok to make a mistake. Anybody has at least one

stupid thing in them.’

‘WOOENG’is an omnibus style webtoon based on the story of a stupid fairy going to people’ s heads and causing unintended mistakes. It shows ridiculous situations everybody has experienced but nobody pointed out because they seem very mundane. In this exhibition, the character design guide and full episodes of the webtoon are open to the public. Wooeng-toon, optimized for mobile devices, shows our shared daily life episodes and the humorous patterns in the four-cut cartoon.

최대호는 우리의 일상 속 소소한 상황과 감정을 남녀노소가 공 감할 수 있는 짧고 경쾌한 특유의 어법으로 SNS에 시를 올려왔 다. 그가 올린 짧은 단상에 대한 반응이 폭발적이었고, 이후 수 많은 사람들과의 온라인 관계 맺기를 시작하면서 2015년 1월 첫 시집『읽어보시집』 을 출간했다.

Daeho Choi has been posting delightfully shor t poems on social media. His writing is based on trivial situations and feelings in daily life, which have become tremendously popular with readers, given his large online following. In January 2015, his first book「Read This Poetry」was published.

더 도슨트는 작품의 의미를 쉽게 풀어 전달하는 전시장의 도슨트(DOCENT)처럼 사회현상 을 감각적인 다큐멘터리(DOCumentary)+엔터테인먼트(ENTertainment)로 쉽고 재미있게 재해석하는 웹 다큐멘터리 채널/프로덕션이다. 본 전시에서는 웹 다큐멘터리 채널을 만들 면서 느낀 초단편/SNS 영상의 개념, 일명 '움짤'(움직이는 이미지)이라 불리는 GIF의 특징 을 렌티큘러로 보여준다.

The DOCENT is a web documentary channel/production explaining the meaning of an artwork in plain language, the way a docent does at an exhibition space.

DOCENT is also a combination of DOCumentary+ENTertainment, reinterpreting s o c i a l i s s u e s i n a f u n a n d a p p ro a c h a b l e w ay . I n t h i s e x h i b i t i o n , t h e characteristics of GIF files (animated still images) created during the production of the web documentary will be shown as lenticular images.
