On The Internet We have all heard the saying, “If it is on the internet, it must be true.” This is meant to be a joke as a person never knows what to believe when they read something on the internet. For example, I have read if a person’s cell phone gets wet, it can be dried by putting in the microwave for a few minutes. Some people have a sick sense of humor. I belong to an online group that helps identify things that are edible while foraging in the woods. This comes in handy in helping to identify mushrooms that are good to eat, though even this site can not be totally trusted. Some helpful individual posted all that mushrooms can be eaten once. This is true, but it is better to know if you will live to eat them a second time. I have learned a lot about mushrooms and assorted edible weeds from this site but do cross reference anything questionable before trying it. I usually do not impart knowledge to questions posed about plants or fungus as there are people on the web site that are much more expert at identification than me. A few days ago, there was an exception. Someone posted a picture of hops with the accompanying question, “What are these?” Since I grow tame hops, I felt confident in lending my expertise in letting the person know. On reading other people’s answer, I learned, hops grow wild in Iowa. This was news to me. Of all the time I have spent in the outdoors, I have never seen wild hops. I must say, I have never been looking for them either. A few days later, I was mowing a pasture with the tractor and brush cutter. When I got to the end of one round, I glanced up into the trees ahead of me and saw what

looked like hops. If I had not read about wild hops just a few days before, I may have seen them, but it would not have registered as to what they were. I stopped and checked them out. There were quite a few hops on the vines and were just ready to harvest. I soon spotted another tree nearby covered with a vine

bearing more hops. When I got done brush cutting, my wife and I went back out and picked wild hops. I am not sure where they could have come from, but from the size of the vines, I would guess they have been there for many years. I picked and chewed one of the hops to compare the flavor to my domestic ones. The flavor was more mild without the intense astringent

quality of the domestics. I can only guess, if these plants were placed here in the last couple of centuries, they were for making either pilsner or wheat beers. Many German families settled this part of the country during the mid-1800’s. Perhaps the hops were introduced at that time for local beer making. There is no way of knowing exactly

how they got started, but I am happy to take advantage of the situation. I will soon be making a wheat beer with locally raised ingredients. Though the internet cannot be trusted much of the time, it is possible to occasionally find some information that is useful.
