Billie, the poodle, wakes up right around 6:00 in the morning. It does not matter whether the sun is up or an hour before sunrise. It is time to get up and if he is up, he expects someone to be up with him. It is not bad to go out and enjoy the early morning in the summertime when the sun is shining brightly and the birds are singing. It is a different story in the fall when it is still dark, and the only sounds are geese squabbling on the lake and the deer crunching acorns on the far side of the yard. Sunday morning, when I would have enjoyed sleeping in, Billie and I got up well before sunrise. It was cloudy with a fall chill in the air. I sat drinking a cup of coffee while Billie chased the deer out of his yard. As the sun peeked over the horizon, the clouds thinned out and a rainbow appeared in the west. The green grass next to the lake with changing leaves in the background made a beautiful scene with the rainbow stretching overhead. I grabbed my phone and snapped a quick picture. It was a sight fit for a calendar, but the cell phone camera could not do it justice. The day cleared and warmed a bit making the normal Sunday routine especially nice. We rode the trails, checking the cameras and enjoying the sights and sounds of the timber. We spot-

ted assorted squirrels, rabbits, a woodchuck, a flock of turkeys, and numerous deer. We also found some young chicken of the woods and a few golden oyster mushrooms. We left the chicken of the woods mushrooms to grow for a few days and picked the golden oysters

to eat later in the day. Heading back toward the house, two trumpeter swans flew in and landed on the lake. We had a perfect day to do the rest of our outdoor tasks. At the end of the day, my wife and I were back on the porch enjoying the nice day while feeling satisfied at the jobs we had accomplished. Billie was spending most of this time soaking up the last rays of sunshine and occasionally perking up to go chase a deer out

of the yard. Clouds started rolling in again just before sunset. I looked off toward the east and the second rainbow of the day appeared arching across the sky. I do not remember ever seeing two different rainbows in one day, so I snapped another picture. Again, the picture was not the greatest, but it made a perfect ending for a pleasant fall day with a rainbow on both ends.
