IN STOCK SPECIALS AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY The year 2022 has presented challenges for investors, with stock markets experiencing significant volatility and bond markets showing unpredictable movement. Much of this can be attributed to external events. The most notable triggers are Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an 5 Steps to Effectively extended peManage Today’s Market riod of higher Volatility inflation, and a shift in monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Times like these can cause anxiety for investors. As you watch markets move up and down, sometimes dramatically in a day, it’s natural to wonder whether it’s time to make changes to your investments. Before you do so, it’s important to think about your finances in the context of the broader picture and seek advice from a professional who can help you evaluate what actions, if any, you should take. Here are five tips to get started. #1 – Don’t let daily events overly influence your decision making It is easy to become overwhelmed with the headlines of the day, particularly if seemingly bad news is piling up and having a negative impact on the markets. Keep in mind that we’ve seen many periods where markets suffered sharp downturns. Yet historically, markets as a whole have always recovered any ground lost during shortterm setbacks. but building an effective, long-term strategy should remain your primary focus. #2 – Re-assess your risk tolerance If you’re feeling uneasy about market volatility, you may need to take another look at the level of investment risk with which you are comfortable. Periods of market volatility are often a true test of the ability to withstand temporary setbacks to your portfolio. Another consideration is your time horizon. For example, if you are within five years of retirement, you may want to consider scaling back the level of risk in your portfolio to protect against the impact of a major downturn occurring at the wrong time – just when you need the money for retirement. #3 – Stay properly diversified Once you’ve determined your risk tolerance, the next consideration is diversification. Maintain an appropriate balance of stocks, bonds, and other types of investments. In addition, make certain you don’t have a concentrated position. As a rule of thumb, no individual holding should represent more than 20% of your asset mix. This includes company stock you may hold in your workplace retirement plan. #4 – Continue or expand systematic investments While volatile markets can be concerning, they shouldn’t impact your ongoing investment plans. If you make regular contributions to your workplace savings plan or other accounts, it’s best to maintain those investments. If markets go down, your regular contribution will purchase

more shares of the investment. That could benefit you over the long run. If you have the ability to save more through systematic investing, don’t be hesitant to boost those amounts you sock away regularly. #5 – Review your strategy with your financial advisor It can be helpful to discuss your financial situation in the context of today’s markets with your financial professional. They will be able to help you assess your current position, if your portfolio carries an appropriate level of risk and whether there may be investment opportunities you should consider today. Having a conversation about the best way to approach today’s markets can make a difference and can help keep you on track to achieve your most important goals. Over the years, I have noticed, most of the wildlife on the farm at one time or another, takes a trail from the north timber, over the dam, and down to the lake to get a drink. After they get a drink, they proceed up the hill, across the food plot and into another patch of timber. I have the spotting scope set up in the dining room, focused on this trail. We seen deer, turkeys, raccoons, geese, otters, and an occasional coyote follow this exact route. One day, I decided to attempt to make life easier for the coyotes to travel that path. I am not concerned about how difficult coyotes have it but concerned about getting a clear shot to see if I can make coyotes extinct. In Iowa, coyotes are the alpha natural predator. They eat fawns, turkeys, pheasants, rabbits, and quail. They will also come into people’s yards and attack cats and dogs. No matter how hard coyotes are hunted, it seems their population never decreases. They are able to bounce back from any adversity, stronger than ever. During the spring, a female coyote will kill a fawn each week for food for her pups. During the fall, rabbits are plentiful. By spring, most of them have been eaten by the coyotes. They will prey

on hen turkeys on their nests and eat the poults as fast as they can hatch. Fortunately, there is no season or limit on coyotes as I feel it my obligation to kill every one I see. I mowed a path from the dam, down next to the lake, and up to the food plot. It took no time for everything in the area to start using my groomed trail. I measured the distance from the front porch to the trail. Finding it was 250 yards, I set up a target at exactly that distance and practiced shooting in various weather conditions with my 5.56. One day a coyote would use the trail, made especially for him, and I would be ready. Everything on the farm started using the path almost immediately. There is no point walking through tall grass when a neatly groomed trail was going the same direction they were. After a couple of weeks watching the path, especially early morning and just before sunset, I finally spotted a coyote sniffing his way down the path, checking for the scent of something good to eat. I grabbed the rifle, sneaked out the door closing it quietly behind me and sat down in my chair, resting the rifle on the porch rail. Allowing for the cross wind, I put the cross hairs in

front of his shoulder. When I gently squeezed the trigger, the coyote dropped in his tracks. A few months of planning had paid off nicely. Since that first success, the opportunity arises every week or two to try again. Sometimes I am successful and sometimes not. When I miss, I prefer to blame it on the wind or some other external factor. When I hit, I attribute to skill. If I can get an average of one coyote per month over the course of several months, a person would think eventually we would run out of coyotes. This does not seem to be the case. Last night, after dark when I let the dogs out for their final evening trip, the coyotes were howling up near the end of the driveway. It sounded like they were having a party up there. I know I am thinning them out, but I know I will not threaten the coyotes with extinction.

SAVE OTTUMWA POST family dog. “We can think about it,” Melissa told her.

I Just Want My Dog June has always had an overabundant supply of energy and desire to play. She especially loves to play catch - with anything. A tennis ball or stick is preferred outdoors. Indoors, she has a wide variety of toys but shows favoritism to her stuffed moose, beaver, and ropes. She gets so excited to play that sometimes it’s hard to get her to settle down.

A couple of weeks earlier, Melissa had briefly mentioned, which led to us having some minor discussions about the slight possibility of maybe thinking about getting a dog sometime down the road. “You’re not thinking about a puggle, right?” Don’t get me wrong, puggles are cute, just not my style. “No,” she said. “Remember, we talked about looking into the possibility of a border collie? I wonder what a border, blue heeler mix would look like?” At that time, I was more eager to get a dog than Melissa – but she was open to at least discussing the idea; I mean, she’s the one who found the ad. “We could go look at them,” I suggested, with an open cell phone in my hand. “Is there a number listed?” I called the people and got an address. “They’ll be there anytime today.”

The heeler jumped up on the roof, sitting on the peak like Snoopy, but Sarge sat on the front edge more like a gargoyle. He looked over the lot of puppies as if to boast, “Yep, those are mine.” We paused at the puggles; most of them were tan and white with some black – traditional beagle colors. But a few of the puggles were gray with black speckles. A little kid held a puppy to his cheek, pleading, “Mom, please. I promise I’ll take care of him.” But Mom stood her ground, “I said we’re just looking.”

Melissa quickly did the math, “She’s only six weeks old. Are you sure she’s ready to go?” “Yep, they’re all weaned and ready to go.” The boy said. “If you really want her, you can take Zoey, and we’ll keep the male instead.”

Ray’s Longbranch (Just the Other Day con’t from pg 4) On her seventh birthday, we surprised June with a black cat. Edgar Allan. “Are you kidding me,” June asked in disbelief? However, within a few days, June accepted Edgar, and the two became best buddies very quickly. “Look, kid; if you’re going to live here in my house, you will have to learn a few things.” June showed Edgar the ropes, and the little black cat grew up learning to walk on a leash, hike, camp, and travel. While the duo adventured through all lower fortyeight states with us, June taught Edgar how to pour on the charm when meeting new people. “Good morning, ma’am; you look lovely today.” Or, “Hello, good sir. Would you happen to have a stick with you?” June would let Edgar share her seat in the car, her spot in front of the fireplace, her bed, and toys. But she drew the line if Edgar messed with her tennis balls. Those were sacred. Oh, and the red laser dot. June would run over Edgar for the red dot. Then, she’d let Edgar have the first drink from a freshwater bowl. June was very kind. It breaks my heart to say that June passed away peacefully on Friday, March 25, 2022. We are crushed beyond words. Just two weeks prior, June was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She was full of life and intended to live the rest of her days to the fullest. Instead, June had a few days of lethargy and days where she was so energetic you wouldn’t have known there was anything wrong with her.

tired. Friday, I had to go to southern Minnesota. Melissa would stay home with June. She was lying on the futon when I talked to her. “Bugs, I’m supposed to go on a short trip. I’ll be home by ten tonight. Are you going to be okay?” She assured me she would be. “Are you sure because I can stay home if you need me?” She again said she’d be okay. “Alright, then give me kisses.” I pressed my lips together tight, and June gave me five or six licks on the mouth and mustache.

I ran errands in Silver Bay and Superior. I talked to Melissa a couple of times as she kept me updated on June’s condition. I was crossing the bridge back to Duluth when I got word from my wife. “Babe, she’s not going to make it.” I immediately canceled my appointment, then called Melissa back. She held June and put me on speakerphone, “June Bug, hang on, baby girl. I’m on my way home.”

saw him. But this time, the grouse didn’t run away. Instead, he fully ruffed his feathers and fanned his tail, offering a salute to June. “Thank you for letting me live here, June, and letting me live.” June never killed anything – she was kind to everyone.

Melissa tried to keep June from seeing her cry and focused on the nature June loved. “See all the birds at the feeder, June? Do you feel the breeze? Look at all the pine trees “She raised her ears, Tom. waving at you.” June’s heartbeat was fading. “There’s the squirrel and the grouse.” Melissa held the free-spirited pup, telling her, “Go chase them.” Melissa wept, holding her. June took her last breath, and her heart quietly stopped beating. By the time I ran into the house, June was lying peacefully on her bed in the living room. Her beautiful black coat was brushed and shiny. Her face was washed, and her soft brown eyes sparkled. June looked so peaceful; I had to ask Melissa, “Is she gone?” Melissa nodded and said, “I’m so sorry, Tom.” Her tears fell like rain, as did mine.

Thank you, God, for having Melissa here with June, to be with her, and hold her while she passed on to You.” We both cried even harder. “And thank you, Lord, for not letting June suffer a long illness. Thank you.” Melissa cried and said, “Isn’t it ironic this beautiful, gentle dog, who was so kind to everyone, died of a large heart.”
