It Makes a Person Wonder There are plenty of places with nice soft dirt where a turtle could dig a hole and lay her eggs. It makes a person wonder why she would choose the side of the driveway with packed down gravel and clay. It would have to be quite a job to make a hole big enough to deposit her clutch, but that is what she chose to do. My wife and I were driving down the road that leads to the lake when we noticed a painted turtle right at the edge of the road. She was about six inches across and still had moss covering her shell from the trip out of the moss beds at the waters edge. On closer examination, we saw she was busily hollowing out a hole with her hind legs. She did not seem bothered by our presence, but after a short time, we left so she could continue undisturbed. We went out to the timber to check the one camera we have set up on a major deer trail. Of the one hundred and twenty-nine pictures on it, most were pictures of pregnant does. They are looking fat and happy. They will be having fawns any (Outdoors cont’d on pg 2)

day. There were a few pictures of bucks, all in velvet, ranging from little spikes to some that look as though they will develop into fairly impressive antlers. Coming back toward the house, we stopped to check on the progress being made by the turtle. She was gone and her nest was covered back up. It is now up to the babies to dig their way out of the rocks and hardened clay when they hatch. Another thing that makes me wonder is what to do with an overabundance of raccoons. There was a time when raccoon pelts were worth money and hunting kept the population in check. Since PETA has convinced the world that wearing animal fur is wrong, there is no market for raccoon pelts. Raccoons are frequently seen run over on the highway and it is impossible to leave anything outside. We have had to quit feeding the wild birds because the birdseed and grape jelly was being raided every night. A person is not allowed to kill them, as they are not in season and are considered by the state to be property of the state. I decided to live trap them.

I placed my trap near where we were feeding orioles grape jelly and baited it with a small container of jelly. About 11:00 that night, Jag started barking ferociously and would not quit. I got up, as there was no ignoring him, and found a raccoon in the trap. I had to pick Jag up and carry him to the garage before I could get near the trap. I put it in the back of the truck and went back to bed. The next morning, my first thoughts were what to do with a raccoon now that I have him. Since the State considers all wildlife to be theirs, I decided to deliver him to back to the State. I thought about taking

him to the state headquarters and putting him in their office but knew I would get in serious trouble for that. They want all wildlife

to be protected, just not where it would inconvenience them. There is some state land several miles away with heavy timber where he could find new friends and lead a happy raccoon life. After a trip per day for several days, it makes me wonder how much time and gas I am going to spend giving rides to a group of raccoons.
