Signs of Spring The typical signs of spring are spotting the first returning robin or seeing swans on their way north on their annual migration. This has been a strange weather year. Throughout the winter, we have seen robins hopping around the yard. Even with snow on the ground, there have been flocks of a hundred or more robins. I am sure they are not able to find any worms under the snow, so I am not sure what they are eating. For us to have this many robins hanging around our house, I wonder if any of them migrated south for the winter. Trumpeter swans go as far south as necessary to find open water. Part of our lake remained open well into December this year. When it froze over, our swans left and went over to Lake Wapello, just a couple of miles away. Even during the coldest part of January, with temperatures well below zero, large numbers of swans and geese kept an area of the lake ice free. I wonder also what they

FEBRUARY 23, 2022

found to eat when snow blanketed the area. They must have been able to find enough food to keep them alive as there are still a couple of hundred swans at the lake. They are now able to fly out to nearby fields and eat corn dropped during the harvest. Every few days, several will fly over our place to see if the water is open. When they swoop down and see nothing but ice, they continue on to Lake Wapello for the evening. I have also noticed an anomaly with the bluebirds. Normally, in early spring, males return north and scout for nesting sights for their mates that will follow in a few weeks. This year I have noticed several pairs of bluebirds that must have over wintered here. One cold and windy afternoon, I watched several in a group fly into a particularly dense cedar tree. I imagine they huddled up, trying to keep warm, and wished they had flown south when they had the chance. Yesterday was an unusually nice day for February. My wife and I decided to get outside, enjoy the weather, and get a head start on some spring chores. We made the route around the farm cleaning bluebird houses and looking for shed deer antlers. I am not sure if the bluebirds we have here will nest here or migrate farther north. If they stay or go, the houses will be ready to go. I imagine, bluebirds that had enough sense to migrate south will come here to nest and the ones that enjoyed the cold weather here will move

on. While making our rounds, we noticed a pair of bald eagles circling overhead. I keep hoping they will nest here, but I know of no effective way of encouraging it. We feel the same about the trumpeter swans but have had no success in attracting them to nest. I think they prefer the cooler weather of northern Minnesota and Canada. One thing I have noticed happening at the normal time is the coyote breeding season. They have been especially active during the early evening as they are mating. This is an especially dangerous time for our domesticated dogs. Coyotes will try to draw the pets away from the house and attack them. Dogs are naturally curious and will be drawn to the commotion of howling and barking from the coyotes. Given the chance, the coyotes will attack and severely injure or kill a dog. Billie, the poodle, does not go too far from the house and is somewhat of a coward, but I still watch him when he goes out after dark. Jag, the terrier, has more courage than sense. He thinks he is tougher and meaner than anything on his farm. I worry about his bravery at this time of year.
