Make it With Love Several years ago, I taught our daughter, Annie, to make lasagna. It was some wonderful father-daughter time spent together in her kitchen. I made one pan as an example to show and guide her, while she made a pan of her own. Annie was concerned with the amount of time it was taking. I expressed the importance of taking the time to do it right. No shortcuts; don’t rush it. “Always make your lasagna with love, and people will love your lasagna,” I told her. We baked, then ate her lasagna for dinner. The meal was delicious; I was proud of her and told her so. The following day, we took my pan of unbaked lasagna and baking directions to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona, Minnesota, to give it to the priests. Father Jonathan answered the door, thanking us for the gift. He seemed very appreciative, and that made us feel pretty darn good. Several weeks later, I was back at home in Silver Bay. It was nearing the end of the year, and I was behind schedule on our home remodeling project. I’d been working on our master bedroom, framing the closets. (Just the Other Day cont’d on pg 5)

Fencing Owning land means being responsible for fences. It is an unfortunate part of life. One would think a person would have less problem with newer fences than old, but this is not the case. A fence that has stood the ravages of time, nature, and cows for twenty years will probably be trouble free for twenty more. A newer fence will have every disaster known to man happen to it the first five years of existence. I had one stretch of fence, about a half mile long, that was well past its useful life. I guessed it to be seventy-five years old by dating the antique barbed wire on it. Large sections of it were rusting away, so I decided to replace it (Outdoors con’t on pg 3)

The spreading crown of a tree hitting the fence will take out three sections and require an hour’s worth of chainsaw work to clear all the branches before fence repair can begin. Having brought the chainsaw with us, I started clearing while my wife and the dogs searched for shed antlers, or rabbits, or anything else that interested them. Before repair

INSPIRED BY great beginnings

could begin, we had to make one return trip to the house to get wire and fencing tools. On the return trip we also found a couple of places where the deer had broken the top wire on the fence. It must be just a bit taller than they expected. A few hours later, the new fence

was as good as new again. My hands were sore, and I acquired a few wood ticks, but the fence was again cow tight. My wife and the dogs had a good time exploring while getting their quota of fresh air and exercise. Though not as planned, we all had a good day in the woods and pasture.

As usual, I was secondguessing my plan. I had intended to use a standard door on Melissa’s closet and had already purchased the door. However, changing to a pocket door would give us much better use of the wall space just outside her closet.

They had invited six priests and the bishop for Christmas Eve dinner. He said, “You made my night easy. I only had to put the lasagna in the oven, get the salad and some veggies, and we had a wonderful meal to enjoy. Everyone loved your lasagna.” He asked me to thank I said to myself, “If I Annie and Melissa, as change to the pocket well, and pass along his door, it will require a trip wishes for a happy and to Duluth, which is 150 blessed New Year to miles, round trip. The problem is, I don’t happen to keep a 28” pocket door frame on hand, and it has to be installed before hanging the drywall. A standard door just requires a rough opening for the door to be installed later.

He called to thank me once again for the lasagna and let me know there was too much for just the two priests who lived in their house. So he put the lasagna in the freezer, waiting until they had enough priests together to bake the lasagna.

The call was from area code 507. Yesterday, I called my agent in Winona with an insurance question. She was going to get the answer and call me back. It was a good thing she called now, as I needed a break from this indecisiveness that was tormenting me. I answered the call, “Hello, this is Tom.” Much to my surprise, Betty didn’t sound like Betty at all. Instead, it was a man’s voice. “Hello, Tom,” he said. “This is Monsignor Colletti, from Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, in
