We’re expanding our
RANGE DIABLO

Become part of California’s next great conservation story. 2025 - 2028
NOW IS THE TIME

50 years ago, two Bay Area visionaries joined forces in pursuit of a common goal: protecting Mount Diablo’s ecologically diverse and extraordinarily beautiful open spaces. What began as an effort to preserve Mount Diablo’s two summit peaks has today resulted in more than 120,000 acres of protected natural lands, connecting people and nature in one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Today, we have an understanding that to truly protect Mount Diablo, we must also protect the whole natural system that encompasses and sustains it — the Diablo Range.
We’re expanding our
RANGE
Wild, rugged and expansive, the Diablo Range crosses 12 Central California counties and covers over 3.5 million acres—a geographic area five times larger than Yosemite National Park. 75% of these open lands are unprotected and at risk of degradation due to unchecked development, the effects of climate change, and losses of wildlife habitat. Protecting the Diablo Range will protect biodiversity, expand access to nature, and increase the amount of conserved land that plays such a critical role in climate resilience as California pursues its ambitious 30x30 goals. Let’s keep Mount Diablo connected to its broader, sustaining range so that this amazing natural resource continues to contribute to California’s vitality for generations to come.
This $10 million campaign plan includes the following allocations to expand and comprehensively support Save Mount Diablo’s work across the Diablo Range.
LAND ACQUISITION
Right now, we have a once in a generation opportunity to use land acquisition funds to inspire larger partner contributions, leveraging $5.5M to channel many millions more toward acquiring and protecting a larger network of natural land. We must act swiftly to secure properties within the northern Diablo Range before this opportunity disappears.
$5.5M to acquire and permanently protect ecologically valuable conservation land.
ADVOCACY

Save Mount Diablo will capitalize upon its deep commitment and advocacy expertise in working collaboratively with other public and private agencies as well as grassroots organizations to advance initiatives to protect the range. With thoughtful and wellcoordinated land use policy, communities can prosper while also preserving the region’s natural values.

IMPACT
The Diablo Range is an unmatched ecosystem. It provides vital wildlife habitat corridors and unique soils that support rare vegetation. Its undeveloped expanse is our largest local carbon sink, an effective nature-based solution to mitigate the environmental stress of climate change for wildlife and for people.
PARTNERSHIPS
We are not trying to go it alone as we embark on this legacy campaign. We’ve been building these partnerships and friendships for decades, and we’re developing a new coalition of Diablo Range partners to help advance this work –grassroots groups, local land trusts, Native American tribes, local, state, and national government agencies, and others.

NATIONAL MONUMENT CAMPAIGN
This is our LEGACY commitment. Today, much of the Diablo Range can be subdivided or sold for development. We have concluded that a Diablo Range National Monument campaign will elevate its significance to the national stage and bring more protections and support. This multi-year effort includes interim steps, such as designating the Diablo Range as a California conservation priority through legislation or resolution.

COMMITMENT
Our expansion into all 12 counties of the Diablo Range is the result of thoughtful and deliberate preparation over many years. As we planned, development pressures and extreme weather events challenged the natural world with increasing intensity. Now is the time to act.

TESTIMONIAL
I am backing Save Mount Diablo’s ambitious Diablo Range campaign for a few reasons. First, while they started focused on Mount Diablo, they smartly recognized that the health of the mountain— and all the life within it—relies on its sustaining range being intact. And that thinking about linkages across large landscapes brings conservation to the scale necessary to meaningfully buffer against the threats of biodiversity loss and climate change. Plus using advocacy, on top of acquisition, to protect a large region is cost-effective. Lastly, Save Mount Diablo has the track record and the vision to pull off the protection of such a significant stretch of California.
