EDITOR’S LETTER

WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, on a study abroad trip to Paris, I walked headfirst, hard, into a telephone poll. My face and ego were bruised, but I stand by my reason: I was gazing up into the stately apartments, their interiors visible at dusk, of Saint-Germain-des-Prés — one of the priciest arrondissements in the City of Light. Even at 14, I was completely taken with interior design and was curious about draperies, furniture, lighting, decor and artwork; my mind also meandered about how occupants might spend their time inside such beautiful, cosmopolitan homes.

Many years later, I find myself equally enthralled with Savannah’s own European élan, on display inside homes everywhere from historic downtown to the islands. I haven’t bumped into any telephone poles, but that’s because it’s my job to actually go inside these marvelous spaces. And instead of imagining where residents might enjoy their morning cup of coffee, I now know the answer: for the homeowners of Glass Menagerie (page 46), it’s in the interior courtyard, next to a bubbling fountain. For the May family (Permanent Vacation, page 73), it’s on the second story, nestled into the oversized porch swing. In these instances and many more throughout the issue, a common theme is subtly communing with nature — through signature scents (page 41) or casual springtime get-togethers (page 34 and 36). After all, fresh air and sunshine never go out of style.

ALONG THE WESTERN WALL of The Drayton Hotel lobby, a custom, cornflower blue chesterfield is long enough for the record books. It’s a sumptuous place to take a seat, but it’s far from the only spot to get cozy in this grand and perfectly appointed space on Drayton Street (where else?), near the intersection at Bay Street. The lobby was designed to feel like a living room, says The Drayton’s owner, Raghav Sapra, pointing

out settees, banquettes and leather stools, with lighting ranging from modern sconces to vintage-inspired table lamps. A colorful palette with layered decor and a range of textures — brick floors, rattan walls — exudes a subtly tropical vibe, and ample, live greenery offers a lush finishing touch. As for Sapra’s favorite spot? A wingback chair upholstered in nubby cream cotton.

“I read my Kindle there in the afternoon,” he says.

Showing Her Hand IN 2018, SAVANNAH CERAMICISTS welcomed MADE newcomer Claire Parrish with open arms.

“Before I moved here, I was looking for a LOCAL studio space to rent, and I just kind of randomly emailed people I found on the Savannah Clay Community website,” Parrish recalls. “They were all so helpful and gave me the scoop, and I immediately started attending meetings when I got to Savannah.”

Parrish, originally from Atlanta, fell in love with ceramics while attending the University of Georgia, in part because of the way the art form blends beauty and function, she says.

“It’s meant to be interacted with, in both the making process and in the use of the work,” she says. “It’s all about bringing people together.”

In 2015, she launched Claire Parrish Pottery, a namesake brand of kitchenware and planters with an ethos that stays true to Parrish’s original appreciation for the craft. “[My work] is traditional in terms of being familiar and comfortable. I want to make something people would want to interact with and feel comfortable interacting with,” she says.

Parrish also draws inspiration from nature, specifically from her grandparents’ farmland in Warrenton, Georgia.

“Having grown up in a city, beautiful wheat fields were not something I saw every day,” Parrish says. “I remember sunrise and sunset being the best part of the day, because of the golden light that fell over the fields. With the glazes I put on a lot of my work, I’m recreating that sense of warmth and that hazy newness over the wheat.”

Admirers will recognize the handmade, personal and original feel of her pieces, an intentional creative choice that Parrish attributes to UGA ceramics professor Ted Saupe.

“When I work, I always hear Ted’s voice telling me, ‘Don’t be afraid to show your hand in your work,’ and that’s the really cool thing about clay,” she says. “Yes, you want it to be beautiful and functional, but if you’ve got a thumbprint on the bottom, don’t worry about it. People like to see that it’s handmade.”

Currently, Parrish works in her home studio and sells merchandise locally at Hygge, Big Bon Bodega and DeSoto Street Market events. In the coming year, she hopes to complete a new, bigger home studio and possibly host pop-up shops from home.

Fireside Chat Project: Jones Street living room Principal: Lauren Hetzel, Timber & Tide THIS LITTLE LIVING ROOM is in a historic William Remshart row house that hadn’t been updated since the 1970s.

Still, it was in great shape and just needed a little modernizing.

We wanted it to have that feel of being on the coast, but not in a kitschy way.

The fireplace was beautiful and meticulously maintained, so I wanted it to pop. We painted it a royal blue — a bit brighter than traditional navy — and paired it with clean, white walls.

Because of the layout and needs of the space, the television had to go above the fireplace. The black backing inside the fireplace and a black TV screen created a harsh, dark hole in a space that

was otherwise soft and relaxing. To combat that, we added a natural element using birch logs. You always find birch trees by water, which played well with the coastal inspiration. We created an insert ourselves: It was an easy, doable project using wood glue, plywood backing, moss and birch logs. It’s very much something a homeowner could recreate.

In spring or summer, you’re not going to have a fire going, but you want to have a focal point. Painting the fireplace blue was helpful, as was choosing a lucite table for an unobstructed view.

But adding those birch logs is what really finalized the room.

IN ANY OTHER KITCHEN, you wouldn’t dare miss exquisite details like handmade, marine-green tiles situated on the diagonal, or a 14-foot-long island rich with veining. But inside this modern condo kitchen, you might just find yourself gazing at the sweeping views of Bull River instead — and that’s by design.

“I wanted to make sure the eye led toward the view,” says Ellsworth Design Build interior designer Anderson Resende, noting that the entire concept was based on the clients’ love of the marsh

and “their deep-seated connections with nature.” Those tiles, for instance, were placed at a 45-degree angle aimed toward the marshland outside. Inspired by shrimp boats, a custom stainless steel leg at the end of the island was fashioned after the bow of a ship. Above, the chandelier casts a shimmering glow, reminiscent of sunlight on water.

Kitchens offer a natural place to congregate. With a view like this, guests will long to linger.

Academy in Savannah, and I had a really good art teacher who is still there, Carmela Aliffi. I went to the University of Georgia as a science major initially, then decided at the last minute to change my major to interior design.

FROM SCIENCE TO INTERIOR DESIGN — THAT’S A BIG JUMP! Well, it’s so scary

to choose a creative career. You really have to think, “How can I survive on this?” That’s why I made a specific decision to go with interior design because [UGA] had a great textiles program, and I loved the nerdy science aspect of looking at fibers under a microscope or picking out certain fibers for a woven fabric.

KATIE CRIDER SPENT the last decade climbing the ranks of the acclaimed design firm Dorothy Draper & Company. Today, she’s the director of product development of Carleton V. Ltd., the brand’s textile design branch that specializes in original printed and woven fabrics. Three years ago, the Savannah native left the glitz of New York and started working remotely from the Hostess City, where her personal style flourishes in her own home, as well as the homes of family and friends. And despite having clients all over the world, Crider says it’s the small projects close to home that make her happiest. “It’s so satisfying to go to a friend’s house, see the wallpaper I suggested for their powder room, and see that they’re loving it,” she says. Here, Crider dishes on all things interior design.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO SAVANNAH? I figured since I work with

clients from all around the world, I don’t need to be in New York anymore, and I was getting a little bit exhausted being there. Technology has changed the industry so much. Sometimes there are visits to mills, but mostly I can do it from home and travel when I need to.

DOES YOUR WORK WITH CARLETON V. INFLUENCE YOUR PERSONAL DESIGN STYLE? I’m a sucker for pink — I guess

it’s the whole Dorothy Draper designer in me that won’t let go. Everyone who knows me knows that I will always try to add some pink in there! But my home downtown is a little quieter than the Dorothy Draper brand, too. It has these beautiful original brick fireplaces and neutral walls.

I like how people are less afraid to paint wood. At my parent’s house on Isle of Hope, I’ve convinced them to paint their built-ins and their sunroom this acid green that looks amazing with the marsh. And I’m so proud of them that they weren’t scared to do it!

SPOILER ALERT: Savannah has no skyscrapers. Most of the city’s tallest buildings max out at around 15 stories; a loose definition of “skyscraper” is anything more than 40. But at one historic downtown property near Monterey Square, there are steel flange beams — those stalwart building blocks used for New York’s Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and the China World Trade Center in Beijing. That’s because, though it’s only three stories tall, the home features custom glass bifold doors.

They weigh about 400 pounds each, and

allow the entire property to open up from the inside.

The house dates back to 1913, but the interior courtyard was added during the 1970s, when building codes were glaringly lax. “It was structurally precarious,” the homeowner says. The courtyard’s windows also opened only partially, and the homeowners wanted a completely indoor-outdoor living space. Enter those folding doors.

“We needed literal skyscraper beams to hold the weight of them. The construction crew had scaffolding and a truck with a

roller conveyor, but how they got them all the way up there? I have no clue.” It was, in a word, “magic,” says the homeowner.

“Teamwork” might actually be the more fitting term. The project called for close collaboration among general contractor David Bloomquist, architect Christian Sottile, and interior designers Sonchia Jilek, Sara Hartley and Carolyn Hultman of Hultman Interiors.

Serendipitously, Sottile grew up just two doors down from the home, and Jilek remembers admiring it during her days as a graduate student in Savannah.

“It’s such a unique structure, and I was always curious about the interior,” Jilek says.

The four-bedroom home features other impressive specs, like nine fireplaces, a rooftop deck and a cavernous front staircase. At the rear wall of the courtyard, next to a babbling fountain, a palm tree ascends three full stories, its fronds just clearing the roof deck.

After intense structural rehab — “We took it down to the sticks and built it back up,” Jilek says, noting the palm tree was the only thing preserved — Hultman Interiors stepped in to make sure the interior design and decor was as exceptionally executed as all the rest. That meant refinishing the home’s original, hand-painted faux marble mantels,

blanketing the parlor in sumptuous Jim Thompson fabric and recreating periodappropriate columns for the entry. In two upstairs guest rooms, each equipped with a fireplace, the team cut ever so slightly into the walls to create a nook for smartly dressed beds; it’s equal parts architectural element and practical solution to forge a clear footpath around each room. The traditional feel of the front of the house quickly progresses into a modern aesthetic, driven largely by the steel-and-glass courtyard.

you open up those doors, everything marries together.”

A unifying color scheme, featuring marine blues, malachite green, neutral tones and punches of imperial purple, facilitates a seamless transition from room to room, indoors to outdoors. Throughout, the Hultman team also assembled pattern and texture to spectacular effect, including woven wallpaper in a jewel-box powder room downstairs.

Taken together, it’s hard to describe the home’s envelope-pushing aesthetic in a word or two, but there was a guiding maxim, says Sara Hartley, also of Hultman Interiors. “‘Be outside the box.’”

putting a one-way window in the shower, but she wouldn’t go for it,” he says, laughing. “‘What if it malfunctions?’”

Such humor and whimsy naturally finds its way into the details of the Capell family residence. The diamond-patterned, chartreuse-colored synthetic turf in the courtyard is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland; the handmade, one-of-a-kind oyster shell chandelier above the dining room table is a playful reminder of

wind chimes on a Lowcountry front porch. In the kitchen, the walls are lined with herringbone-patterned glass tile (it’s even behind the transparent glass cabinets). The stove is an appropriately French blue La Cornue, handmade in France. State-of-the-art Miele appliances provide a contemporary German style — the dishwasher doesn’t have a handle; simply knock to open.

folk. Last Christmas, they flew to Ireland. In June, they’ll pack their bags again for Europe. Thanks to journeys abroad, they were able to collect a mélange of all their favorite finds. Though, as lifelong South Carolinians, it was important for them to retain the spirit of their native landscape. “We wanted to keep it simple like the Lowcountry but with the sleekness of a European home,” Capell says.

The stucco fireplace in the great room best embodies this design philosophy. An artist was hired to craft it by hand, sculpting it to resemble refined oyster shells, an apt complement to raised cabinets and Mediterranean-blue wallpaper. A similar effect was achieved in the master bath, featuring meticulously selected,

iridescent tile with a rough-hewn texture. To maintain a balance between rustic and contemporary, the shower is zero-entry, leaving the white oak floor stylishly unbothered.

The floor itself is sourced from an Amish barn built in the 1800s in Pennsylvania. The beams and rafters were removed, split and hauled south. “The floor is really cool,” Capell says. “We saw it and just had to have it.” Rather than stain the boards, a waterbased sealant was applied to allow for the natural color to shine

through. Some of the pegs used to secure the original beams are still visible.

Upstairs, the guest suite is inspired by a studio apartment in Paris, complete with kitchenette, sitting room and sauna (the sauna, however, is Finnish). The kids’ rooms — Claire is 16; Mac, 13 — open up to a balcony overlooking the lake that sits on the property. When the weather is right, they enjoy walking to the lake and fishing together.

The kids always come along on their travels, Capell says, allowing the family “to spend time together that normally you wouldn’t have.” To remind them of past trips, they collect and frame art found along the way: a painting of Positano, Italy, they purchased from an artist the moment the paint dried; a signed photograph of the Arc de Triomphe to preserve the memory of Paris.

LIFE IN THE LOWCOUNTRY is about slowing down to savor simple joys. Ken and Karen May took that to heart with their custom build in The Landings.

The Mays initially bought a vacation home in The Landings in 2012, after researching vacation homes in North Carolina, South Carolina and other parts of Georgia. As dedicated golfers, the Mays were looking for a place to play year-round. They were impressed by the community’s six golf courses, as well as two harbors and a family-friendly, neighborhood feel, all situated alongside Skidaway Island’s natural beauty.

Family obligations and Ken’s busy career as a cardiologist left them with only a few weeks each year to stay at their vacation home. But even when they found time to enjoy it, they wished for a space that was more their own, with an open layout, and, if possible, a great view.

Karen’s close-knit family lives within a 50-mile radius of the

Mays’ main property in Pennsylvania. She never thought she would leave, but keeps an “Our Happy Place” plaquette at their Savannah retreat. The sign was a harbinger: The Mays decided to relocate to The Landings more permanently and build a custom home perfectly tailored to their needs and tastes.

As Ken puts it, “it’s cold in Pennsylvania, and, after working several years, we began planning what we’d do in retirement.”

To bring their vision to life, the couple partnered with builder Matthew Johns, who has “a lot of good instincts,” Ken says. “He can tell you what works practically, and what doesn’t.”

Johns toured The Landings with the Mays, searching for the optimal spot to build their dream home. He showed them what he called a “sleeper lot,” Ken recalls, which was next to the golf course; it’s where the home now stands today.

“Golf brought us here, so it made sense to have a lot on the golf course,” Karen says. “The fact that it overlooks a lagoon was the icing on the cake.”

Her love of cooking and entertaining also influenced the home’s design. With four children and four grandchildren

who visit often, Karen opted for a large, open kitchen that extends into the family room and features a breakfast nook.

“Everyone can be in one place when you’re entertaining,” she says.

Ultimately, however, the Mays’ main focus was creating a place to let their worries fade away.

“It was important for both of us to have a relaxed, casual feel the minute you walked in the door,” Karen says. She reached out to interior designer Anne Pappas to design a space that balanced coastal and traditional elements.

Pappas delivered with a serene, tonal palette paired with crisp, grounding whites. Hints of shiplap throughout the home round out the design, evoking the laid-back, Lowcountry-coastal lifestyle.

“I relied on Anne to make my vision her vision,” Karen says.

Ken finds his getaway in what was once his office but now functions as a library or study. His love for the outdoors often

takes Ken out to the enclosed, ground-level porch. Here, he can gaze down the golf course or observe birds and other wildlife.

“I’m still a little starstruck,” Ken says. “I just wander around the house and look at everything, even though we’ve been here for about two years.”

For Karen, there is no place in the home quite as relaxing as her oversized, cushioned porch swing upstairs.

“I love nothing more than to go up there and take my coffee or take a cocktail, depending on the time of day, and just swing. I’m like a child,” she says. “I love to just go up there, and the cares of the day melt away.”

Currently, the Mays still split their time between Pennsylvania and Savannah but are looking to retire to The Landings full-time within the coming year.

“When we get here, it’s well appreciated,” Karen says. “Though we’re not yet here all the time, it truly feels like home.”
