Welcome to Southern Coastal Weddings, a new annual publication from Savannah magazine. In these 152 pages, we’re stepping past our city limits and looking further afield to Tybee, Bluffton, Beaufort, Hilton Head Island and the Golden Isles in order to deliver a more expansive view of the unique charm and beauty that draws thousands of couples here each year to be married.

Every wedding begins with a yes—a commitment and a declaration of hope. WHILE “SET THE DATE” has entered the lexicon as a newly engaged bride’s first priority, the truth is that the venue is boss—many places book months, even years, in advance.

Start by asking yourself (and your fiancé, of course) if you’d like your wedding to be indoors or outdoors. Indoor venues offer a safeguard against the fickle Southern weather, but the charm of an outdoor wedding cannot be ignored. Remember, you can always mix and match—an indoor ceremony paired with an outdoor reception, or vice versa. Tailor the scene to your vision and tolerance for risk.

“An outdoor wedding depends on the weather, and if the bride is willing to chance it,” says Tara Skinner of Tara Skinner Weddings and Events, formerly Posh Petals and Pearls. “Late February, March and April and then September and October are the most popular months to do a wedding in the Lowcountry. But I would never do an outdoor wedding in the summer— it’s just too hot.”

Summer heat aside, the loveliness of the Lowcountry landscape and surrounding coastal areas holds a certain allure, one that might even convince a bride to ignore the weather forecast.

“I try to encourage people to book outdoor ceremonies,” says Sarah Aliffi-Baez, senior catering sales executive at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. As a precaution, Aliffi-Baez contracts backup space on the property so the bride and groom can make a weather call on the day of the wedding. Kendall Wayner at Savannah Special Events notes that even just talking about a rain plan can make all the difference. “I’ve found that if we have something in place, it isn’t as stressful because we’ve thought it through,” she says.

“It’s better to know what the added costs could be rather than waiting until the last minute and having a lot of extra add-ons, which can get very expensive.”

An outdoor location doesn’t necessarily mean a beach wedding, either—venues like Fripp Island Resort offer the golf course

for an outdoor ceremony as well, says the resort’s sales manager, Kathy Kluttz.

Next, consider what the venue provides in terms of furniture, equipment, catering and more. A full-service option like The Westin Hilton Head Resort & Spa offers brides and grooms a turnkey wedding planning experience from end to end. Or, if you prefer to customize your wedding with different vendors, you might choose a blank-slate venue where you can create your dream day. For instance, Telfair Museums offer three unique sites that can be customized to your tastes. Either way, make sure to ask about any site fees as well as how food and beverages (if provided by the venue) are charged—and never be afraid to negotiate.

Last but certainly not least, keep an eye on your budget. Even though discussing money is often viewed as gauche in the South, it’s absolutely necessary here.

Define your overall spend, break it down into individual line items—venue, food, dress, music, flowers—and discuss with

your soon-to-be-groom and family ways you can stick to this outline. Creating the budget early on in the process is crucial to understanding the overall cost of the wedding, according to Austin Wright, wedding coordinator at Telfair Museums.

“Some brides book their dream venue, then realize it takes up more than half their budget and have to cut back on other things,” he says. “If you come up with a number for everything, you can plan accordingly.”

Next up: the time of the ceremony, which dictates the formality of the event and cues your guests to the appropriate dress code. Do you want women in sundresses and men in seersucker? If the answer is yes, an afternoon wedding is for you. Are you looking for a more formal affair with the option for guests to wear black tie? Then a ceremony that starts after 6 p.m. is your answer.

“Generally anything past 6 p.m. is considered black tie optional or black tie, but you should specify on your invitation if black tie is required,” Skinner says. “As society as a whole becomes more laid back, wedding attire has followed suit, so we always encourage brides to be absolutely clear.”

Take into account the comfort of your guests—if they’re in tuxes and long dresses, have an air-conditioned space or plenty of fans. Even Southern winters can have the occasional balmy day, so be prepared. There’s nothing worse than sweating through a suit (or a wedding dress, for that matter).

The Planner IF YOU WANT TO HIRE a wedding planner, start by referring to your budget and the scope of your planning needs.

Some wedding professionals will guide you through the full planning process (the most expensive/costly choice), while others step in a month before the wedding.

Some brides elect to bring on a planner just a week before the wedding or even opt for a day-of assistant.

According to Kelli Corn, owner of Kelli Corn Weddings & Events in Bluffton, “A good wedding planner will help couples make the right decisions and be a leader without forcing their opinions. I always tell my brides that you spend a year to a year and a half planning for basically just five hours, and if you don’t have a strong relationship with your planner, you won’t be able to relax.”

When choosing your planner, Corn recommends asking for references from former brides and wedding vendors and

researching the planner’s professional background.

Sebrell Smith, owner of Sebrell Smith Designer Events in Savannah, suggests meeting with a wedding planner early on for efficient time and budget management.

“A good planner will have inside information on venues and vendors that you may not be aware of, and their connections will save you time and money,” she shares.

If you decide to hire a week-of or day-of planner, organization is key. Corn recommends compiling a list of all wedding vendors, contracts and event details for your planner. This will give planners a well-rounded picture of what has been done, what needs to be done and all the other intricate moving parts of your particular wedding. It also helps ensure that you’ll be able to do what you’re supposed to be doing on the big day—enjoying special time with your spouse, family and friends.

AS ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS you get to keep after your wedding day (besides your spouse, of course), wedding photographs are a visual reminder of the love, laughs, dances and vows you shared.

Your wedding album holds the power to evoke poignant moments and memories from those few precious hours—from the moment you laid eyes on each other while walking down the aisle to the moment you entered your reception to celebrate with family and friends.

Research photographers based on their style of photography and find those that match most closely the vision you have for your wedding. Peruse their websites and social media feeds for recent weddings and ask for references from previous clients to better understand what it will be like working with them on your wedding day.

Like wedding venues, wedding photographers book up well in advance so it’s important to select your photographer early on in the planning process. “We book six months to a year in advance for weddings,” Mark Staff of Mark and Lisa Staff Photography says. “The spring and fall book up especially far in advance in the Lowcountry because the weather is perfect for weddings.”

After selecting a photographer, make a schedule of all the photo sessions you want, from engagement pictures to day-of bridal and family portraits. As well, many couples elect to do a “first look,” where the bride and groom arrange to meet before the ceremony. First looks can relieve some wedding day jitters by giving the bride and groom time together alone­—and photos of a private moment before the vows—but other couples prefer the raw emotion of the traditional walk-down-the-aisle reveal.

AND DON’T FORGET VIDEO. Though it’s an added expense, a highlight reel of your wedding may be worth the cost. “The day of the wedding is such a rush with so many raw emotions that at the end of the day you forget a lot of it,” sys Bert Jolley, co-owner of I Thee Film.

“When you see it played on video, you remember so many more moments.”

Videographers gather footage throughout the day of the wedding, from wedding preparations to the moment the bride and groom exit the reception, and then weave

together different moments to tell the couple’s own unique story. Most of the videos Jolley produces for weddings are in the 7-to-9-minute range, and while he can typically produce them within three months of the wedding, during his busiest seasons (May and October) it can take a bit longer.

The good news? It’s worth the wait.

“Photography is great at capturing an instant,” Jolley says, “but videography preserves the entire action and feeling of a moment in time.”

The Invitations YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY about first impressions, so make it a good one. Wedding invitations are in a decision-making league of their own, and with endless papers, inks, envelopes, liners, ribbons, stamps and seals to choose from, it’s easy to feel in over your head.

“Your invitation is the first visual indicator of the type of wedding the guest is coming to,” says Emily McCarthy, owner and founder of Emily McCarthy Shoppe + Studio, a Savannah boutique that specializes in wedding invitations and personal branding. “Is it very formal? Is it casual? Is it whimsical? The wedding invitation answers that question.”

McCarthy starts the invitation process by determining the overall design and aesthetic for the wedding, usually through the bride’s Pinterest board or a mood board provided by the wedding planner. She recommends that brides stay away from overly trendy elements.

Designs that incorporate classic creams and ivories (with a hint of color if the bride so desires) are more timeless.

“The invitation becomes a piece of artwork that represents a couple’s wedding day,” McCarthy says. “I have wedding invitations that belonged to my grandparents and great-grandparents. It’s a piece of history.”

SAVE-THE-DATE VS. INVITATION

While the save-the-date notice and the invitation should come from the same family of papers, the information they impart is vastly different. Generally, the save-the-date communicates the date and time of the wedding and any pertinent details about travel and accommodations. Save-the-dates often include links to the couple’s wedding website where guests will find all the details about the wedding weekend. Per McCarthy, save-the-dates should be ordered and sent six to eight months in advance of the event.

The invitation, which should be sent six to eight weeks in advance, serves as the official notice that the bride and groom request your presence at their wedding ceremony and reception. Formal verbiage announces who presents the bride to be married, if applicable, and lists time and place of the ceremony and reception. The invitation is also judge and jury on the wedding attire—so if you want your guests to wear black tie, now is the time to tell them.

RSVP cards with stamped return envelopes are typically included with the invitation, and if you’re asking guests to indicate which entrée they prefer at the reception, allow them space to indicate any special dietary restrictions or allergies.

Taming the guest list can be a Herculean task, what with all of your family, friends and parents’ friends—not to mention the in-laws’ must-haves.

McCarthy says to be choosy when it comes to work colleagues, as inviting the entire office could take up a valuable chunk of the list. Drawing the line between first and second cousins could be fruitful, too—but if you’re the first family wedding of your generation, this could get tricky.

Find some middle ground by thinking about the people who mean the most to you and your spouse, as individuals and as a couple. Celebrate your marriage surrounded by the people you love and who are as excited about this marriage as you are.

CALLS FOR CALLIGRAPHY

The language of the invitation may set the tone, but it’s the job of the calligraphy to add the personal touch of a handwritten note.Ashley Curry Calligraphy Ashley Curry of Ashley Curry Calligraphy advises using fonts that are appropriate for the style of your event.

If it’s a traditional black-tie affair, a more formal copperplate or Spencerian script should be used. For a casual event, a loose, light modern style is more appropriate.

If having your entire invitation written in calligraphy isn’t financially feasible, Curry recommends budgeting for hand-addressed envelopes.

“Your wedding is the most formal event you will ever host, so it should be your priority to make sure the envelopes are addressed by hand,” she says. “There is something so nice about getting a handwritten letter.”

Should be designed six to eight months before the wedding and sent out six weeks before (if you sent save-the-dates) or eight weeks before (if you didn’t).

Rehearsal dinner invitation

Should be sent one to two weeks after formal invitations.

Programs & party paper

Should be ordered 1-2 months before the wedding.

WHEN THE WEDDING IS OVER, the marriage begins—and you’ll needs lots of things to help you build a new life together.

That’s why creating your gift registry is one of the most fun parts of planning your wedding: you’re literally thinking ahead. What’s more, while some registry gifts are fine and unique, most are quality items you’ll use every day.

According to Beverley Reynolds at The Cottage Shop in Savannah, it’s great to get an early start on your registry. With so many different patterns, styles and options for china, crystal and other tabletop entertaining items, the process can be overwhelming. And that’s just part of a wedding registry. There are also linens, kitchen staples, barware and so much more. Take it one step at a time: start with the china.

“I always tell our brides, ‘You’ve done the hard part—you picked the groom’,” Reynolds says. “So now let’s go to the next thing you’ll have for the rest of your life—the china and crystal.”

china or both. Fine china is certainly a financial investment, so consider which colors and patterns you’ll still like year after year.

Gold and silver metallics integrated into simple patterns paired with more colorful salad or bread-and-butter plates are on trend, Reynolds says, as is the prevalence of blue-and-white patterns.

It’s important to include a range of differently priced items in your registry, as some guests prefer to choose less expensive gifts for wedding showers and save the higher ticket items for the actual wedding gift. Reynolds also recommends registering for a few pieces of local artwork—they feature pieces from Charles Leonard and other local painters in their store—and warns not to forget to register for a salt-and-pepper set, a good salad bowl, covered butter dish, cheese platter, steak knives and a carving board, as these household items are often overlooked but always needed.

Any gifts you receive on the occasion of your wedding are talismans of past, present and future, and in that sense, they are gifts that keep on giving.

WHEN CHOOSING THE FOOD for your wedding reception, consider first how you want it served, either through a formal seated dinner or at different stations. The latter is more traditional in Southern weddings, but seated dinners (particularly al fresco) are becoming more prevalent in the cooler months—and the difference in cost between them might surprise you.

“Station dinners are more casual in nature, whereas a seated dinner definitely is more formal,” says Leah McCarthy, co-owner of Downtown Catering Company in Bluffton. “For us, it all depends on what we are serving. A client could pick several different stations with many different proteins, vegetables and sides, which will cost much more than a plated chicken dinner.”

Now it’s time to choose a caterer.

If the reception is at a hotel, then this question is answered for you—just be sure to schedule a tasting with the catering team and discuss whether the food and beverage is charged per guest or on consumption (usually the former if it is a larger venue contract).

If your reception location requires an outside caterer (as with Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum or Telfair Museums in Savannah), ask your venue for a preferred list to choose from.

“We keep a preferred rental company and caterer list for all of our events, and each company comes highly recommended,” says Madison Smith of Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.

When creating your contract, catering coordinator Candice Carver of Cha Bella Catering in Savannah recommends identifying the catering budget up front to avoid any confusion. “Sometimes a bride and groom

want a specific menu, but it could be $2,000 over what their budget allows,” Carver says. Keeping everyone on the same page in terms of budget will set the expectation from the start.

MENU-MAKING

FOOD TRUCK FUN

The food truck trend is here to stay.

The advent of “late-night food” is especially lucky for weddings, and it’s easy to park a food truck at the reception exit to serve guests one more nibble before they depart.

“More and more, couples are offering a late-night snack, and more guests are expecting one,” says McCarthy. “The selection truly depends on whether the couple wants more salty or sweet options, but either way, guests love a small bite to nosh on after dancing (and drinking)!”

Something handheld like a cone of French fries or a paper boat of tacos makes the perfect parting gift for your guests—and may help reduce the likelihood of a hangover, too. If a latenight sweet is more to your tastes, rest assured there’s a food truck for that, too.

“We bring our food truck to weddings and bake cookies fresh on site for a truly unique experience,” says Hannah Womack, co-owner of Big Boy Cookies in Statesboro. And because if you give a guest a cookie, they’re going to ask for a glass of something, Big Boy Cookies also serves organic milk along with their signature French-pressed coffee and bottled water.

Creating a menu for your wedding is an opportunity to show some of your personality and showcase some local flavors. For a seated dinner, you’ll want each course to be a well-rounded dish with accompanying sides.

“Our favorite menus are the ones that put a modern twist on traditional Savannah cuisine,” says Miranda Merchant, marketing and communications manager at The DeSoto Savannah hotel. “Prosciutto-wrapped grouper with Canewater Farm’s grits and braised collards, or truffle butter pan-roasted chicken with herb polenta, sorghum-roasted carrots and a thyme jus are popular choices you might find on the menu at a plated dinner at The DeSoto.”

If you’re doing food stations, incorporating fresh proteins and vegetables from the region is a way to give your guests a quick bite as they mingle. “I always recommend that couples incorporate seafood into their reception menus,” says Brad Syfan, owner of The Wyld restaurant in Savannah. “This is a coastal city, and we’re on the water, so all the seafood is caught fresh or locally sourced as much as possible.”

Additionally, a cocktail-style reception does not require seating for all guests, vastly trimming the need for extra chair rental.

Cha Bella’s Carver notes that she books many receptions where the passed appetizers are swapped for a display of stationary hors d’oeuvres, which are more photogenic. Family-style served dinners are becoming more popular than individually coursed dinners too, says Carver.

No one wants to wait in line for drinks, especially at a wedding. Prevent any guest frustration by making sure your reception is fully equipped with enough bartenders so the drinks flow without interruption throughout the evening. Paul Ganem of Johnnie Ganem’s Package and Wine Shop in Savannah recommends hiring one bartender per 75 guests depending on the setup of the bars and the drink menu. If specialty cocktails are being made to order, he recommends adding another bartender to each bar to keep things moving. Check with your caterer and venue to understand their vision for the display and service of food and beverages, and make sure the floor plan is open and spread out to avoid any traffic jams.

As the centerpiece of a wedding reception, the look of your wedding cake is something you’ll always remember—mostly because it will be in many of your wedding photos, so you want it to stand out (without upstaging the bride, of course). Cathy Huber, of Cathy Huber Cakes on St. Simons Island, understands that the wedding cake is a showpiece at the event, but it has to taste good, too.

“We want people to say, ‘Wow, that’s the most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen!’ And when they taste it, to say, ‘That’s the best cake I’ve ever tasted!’” says Huber.

Huber works with her clients to understand their personal tastes and encourages them to push the boundaries of what a traditional wedding cake is supposed to look and taste like. Because wedding cakes are typically many layers, each layer can be a unique flavor. Some of her favorite cakes have been the ones with the wildest combinations: Mexican hot chocolate with Nutella filling, pink champagne cake with strawberries and cheesecake filling and her latest creation, a cake with edible cookie dough, brownie and fudge icing and a salted caramel filling. “The bride and groom told me they are still getting compliments about that cake,” she says.

As for design, Abby Longwater of Wicked Cakes of Savannah receives many requests for custom wedding cake toppers that look like the bride and groom. She makes these tiny toppers based on the bride’s wedding dress and the groom’s tux or suit and makes them look identical to the couple.

Longwater says that no matter what flavors or details you choose for your wedding cake, you should always put you and your fiancé’s tastes first. “This is your wedding, and it should reflect you and your partner,” Longwater advises. “Don’t focus on what you think your guests want.”

The Décor and Rentals Designing your dream wedding begins with a mood board. Gathering key design elements and colors via Pinterest or physical display is not only fun but will also help you understand and hone the overall aesthetic of your wedding.

Wedding planner Alysse Sweeney of Design Studio South starts the wedding design process by asking her clients a series of exploratory questions to get to know their tastes and personalities. What are their favorite stores? What are their favorite foods? Where did they fall in love?

These answers provide a larger picture of who clients are and their personalities might be woven into the wedding.

Sweeney then asks her couples what colors they have in mind and presents a few complementary colors as well. The end result is a broader color scheme made up of six to seven colors to use throughout the wedding day, instead of just two or three.

“I always like to open couples up to adding in other color options they might not have considered before,” Sweeney says.

“It gives a bit more depth and visual interest within the context of the overall design of the wedding.”

Newton recommends having plenty of space. “It can be a long day, and the worst thing you can do is book a room where everyone is on top of each other,” she notes. “You want enough room for people to meander and spread out to enjoy themselves.” Perry Lane Hotel’s Celebration Suite offers a built-in hair and makeup station, numerous makeup mirrors, and even hooks for bridesmaids to hang their dresses to prevent wrinkles.

As for the groom and his wedding party, they’ll want to follow suit by booking a spacious room to hang out and get dressed in for the day of the wedding, but men often forget to order food in advance, and that’s where things can get dicey.

Shane Johnson of Rise Biscuits Donuts in Savannah says he gets loads of last-minute requests for day-of-wedding orders. He notes that biscuits make a great breakfast, and they’re the perfect sustenance to stick with the bridal party throughout the day.

When searching for a rental company, Ellen Nye of EventWorks in Savannah suggests doing your homework. “Research their websites and social media and read reviews,” she says. “A lot of rental companies carry similar inventories, but we all have different smaller items—decide what is most important to you, and then make your decision based on which company has the most things you want.”

Once you make your decision, Nye suggests communicating with your rental company throughout the planning process and asking lots of questions to make sure you get the most for your money.

After securing basic rental needs, build in custom touches. A lounge area with couches can be personalized with throw pillows and pictures of the bride and groom’s family on side tables. Dinner and cocktail tables can feature a mix of high and low floral arrangements in different types of containers. While it’s important to keep your expectations in line with your

budget, small elements like these can have a big impact on the overall look of the event.

“Things do have a way of adding up quickly, so if there is something you fall in love with but your budget doesn’t support, you will have to be open to editing down to fit within your budget parameters,” Sweeney says.

DETAIL-ORIENTED

One of the final details to fall into place is often the getting-ready plan for the day of the wedding, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, reserving a location for pre-wedding prep can be as easy as booking a suite at a hotel or venue near your ceremony so you don’t have to fuss with complicated transportation or unforeseen traffic.

“More and more we see that wedding parties are all getting ready together onsite starting first thing in the morning,” says Allison Newton, wedding specialist at Perry Lane Hotel in Savannah. “Most hair and makeup teams come to work with the bride

The Flowers WHILE CHOOSING FLOWERS may seem like a daunting task, start by looking at your backyard for inspiration. Incorporating coastal Georgia and South Carolina floral varieties in your wedding will help to give it a sense of place and locality.

Using your wedding colors as your base palette, work with a florist to layer in flowers in matching and complementary shades. Maria Kato of Kato Floral Designs in Savannah receives many requests for greenery as wedding florals, and she uses local palms, stalks of Monstera deliciosa and snips of stock white flowers to give the wedding ceremony and reception a taste of the region’s lush landscape. As hearty plants, these arrangements can withstand the swelter of a Lowcountry summer or the whip of a coastal breeze. Savannah’s John Davis of John Davis Florist incorporates local florals into his wedding designs too, using fresh magnolias, camellias, gardenias, large palms or even a fresh boxwood wall to create a unique statement piece for the reception.

For Michele Mikulec, owner of Savannah florist Madame Chrysanthemum, it’s important for a couple to decide on their 34

floral budget before engaging her in the planning process so she can propose flowers that work within that range. “If flowers are important to you, then make sure you budget your wedding around them,” she says. Mikulec has been pleasantly surprised by the increasing requests for trailing bridal bouquets, which offer an architectural yet feminine spray of flowers to carry down the aisle. Kato creates many cascading arrangements as well, draping a full swath of flowers and greenery over a cased opening or ceremony arch for a romantic touch.

When looking for floral inspiration, Davis recommends using Pinterest to find different types of arrangements but warns against being married to a specific flower. “Pinterest photos are great for inspirational ideas,” Davis says, “But some flowers may be impossible to get at a certain time of year.” Davis also recommends that when working within a confined budget, less can be more. “Go for impact in a few areas, then perhaps consider single flowers at each table setting with votive candles. Even one large coastal palm in a single large glass cylinder is chic and does not break the bank.”

Many different pieces of music are required to make this sacred occasion meaningful and seamless. Band or DJ? With a well-constructed budget, it’s an easy decision. Bands are the more expensive choice of the two, but live music can certainly be the life of the party.

“The music, more than anything, sets the tone for the celebration,” says Jeremy Davis of The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra, based in Savannah and New York City.

“Long after the flowers have faded and much of the night becomes a distant memory, people will always remember the way a great band made them feel.”

As the more budget-friendly option, DJs are a perennially popular choice and can book months in advance for wedding receptions. Jeff Brown, owner of All About You Entertainment, works with his clients to ensure the DJ’s style fits the bride and groom’s vision for the reception—and their taste in music, of course. He recommends following DJs on social media to get a sense of their go-to genres and recent wedding programs.

The rise of “silent discos” presents a polite alternative. Equipped with individual headphone sets with music piped in from a DJ (or sometimes two or three), guests can party all night long without risking a noise complaint. Kelli Corn of Kelli Corn Weddings planned a silent disco for a bride and groom who wanted to extend their reception and was very pleased with the guests’ reaction. “Everyone loved it,” she says. “It was one of those things that was either going to be a huge hit or a bust, and it was definitely a hit. Guests danced and sang along to their favorite songs and we didn’t have to worry about any noise.”

Thanks to Duchess Meghan Markle, brides are requesting a natural look in terms of makeup and beauty, says Courtney Victor, owner of Glow Medical Spa and Beauty Boutique in Savannah. “Meghan wore fake lashes, light coverage foundation, a natural lip color and light blush that showed her freckles, and she looked flawlessly elegant,” Victor says. Small enhancements like false eyelashes or extensions and eyebrow microblading are popular ways to keep the bridal look impactful yet simple.

An organic spray tan can give you a healthy glow, but you must get it from a reputable professional or else it could rub off on your dress, Victor says. She also recommends avoiding any dark or saturated lip colors that need constant reapplication and could lead to a ring around the mouth. The Rings YAY, ANOTHER DECISION you’ll live with for the rest of your life. All jokes aside, when it comes to the ring, the days of total surprise are (mostly) long gone ... and that’s a good thing.

A decision this big should be made in conjunction with your partner—namely, how much you want to spend on each ring, and what you want your rings to say about the two of you and the life you share.

“Today the trend is that most engagement rings have a center stone and smaller stones on the sides, and the wedding band incorporates the same smaller stones,” says Jean Templet, manager of Levy Jewelers’ downtown Savannah location. “Most of the time brides will choose some sort of diamond band—a channel setting, or prong-set diamonds, but it matches the look of the engagement ring.”

Aside from the usual diamond band, which is perfectly elegant and timeless, sapphires, emeralds and rubies can be a fresh departure and incorporate a little more personality. And in any event, creating a custom band that fits neatly underneath or around the engagement ring allows for a comfortable fit that will survive years of wear and tear, according to Templet.

As for the groom’s band, Templet says that a sturdy gold band is the most popular option among grooms, but the choice of metal should ultimately be decided based upon what is appropriate for his lifestyle. The more he uses his hands, the more durable the metal he should select for his wedding band. Alternative metals like cobalt, titanium and tungsten are tougher options for bands, but be forewarned: these metals require the wedding band be preordered in the groom’s specific size—they’re so hard, in fact, that they can’t be resized.

Moving past the era of identical bridesmaid dresses, where each attendant was a clone of the next, brides’ tastes are now trending toward individuality.

“Not everyone’s body type is the same, so it’s great that brides are letting their bridesmaids pick their own dresses—not just in terms of size but in style and shape too,” says Katherine Josephson, owner of Bella Bridesmaids, a new shop opening in Savannah in late September 2018. “Brides are even choosing patterns and florals in their bridesmaids’ dresses, which makes for great photographs, too.”

Another approach is for brides to select one color family and allow their bridesmaids to choose different shades and dress styles. According to Christina Vicaro, owner of Lowcountry Bride & Gown in Bluffton, the resulting ombré effect adds depth and interest to the bridal party. Vicaro says that because so many brides are choosing to get married in the fall for the cooler weather, she sees a lot of wine, mahogany and burgundy colored dresses that coalesce with the season. Navy and dusty blue are year-round favorites, and both are appropriate for both formal and more casual weddings.

Vicaro recommends ordering the bridesmaid dresses as early as possible so that if any problems arise, there is plenty of time to either send back a dress or take it to a seamstress for alterations.

Appropriate measurements are key for the perfect fit, too, according to Josephson, who advises that bridesmaids should visit a Bella Bridesmaids store or any reputable seamstress in their area for accurate measurements. Whichever route you choose, it’s nice to keep in mind what will make your friends feel the most comfortable as they stand next to you at the altar—it’s your day, but you want your best girls to enjoy it, too.

Many wedding parties are opting for a formal black or navy suede slipper during the ceremony. “By booking the hotel room blocks nine to 12 months out, you are able to lock in the best rates available,” says Larissa Szynski, director of catering at The Brice Hotel in Savannah. “This will also give your guests plenty of time to make their travel arrangements.” The Brice offers a variety of accommodations, ranging from well-appointed guest rooms to larger suites with living spaces (perfect for those family members staying beyond the weekend).

Szynski recommends booking a block just big enough for the number of guests likely to book hotel rooms. Some hotels charge penalties if the room block is not booked completely—and unforeseen expenses like this can add up.

The Transportation FROM OLD-FASHIONED trolleys and open-air buses to black cars and mini coaches (with or without the horse), there’s no shortage of ways to ferry guests to and from wedding festivities. Your first consideration should be weather: spring or fall weddings might allow for an open-air trolley, while ceremonies in the winter and summer need to take heating and air conditioning into account.

Patti Dooley of Old Savannah Tours recommends building in extra time for guests to be transported to and from the ceremony, specifically in downtown Savannah. What looks like an easy five-minute drive from square to reception can get much longer thanks to Historic District traffic. Historic Savannah also has specific restrictions about where commercial vehicles can pick up and drop off guests, so double-check that your designated pickup and drop-off location is approved for your transportation vehicles.

Dooley also reminds clients that while alcohol is allowed aboard Old Savannah Tours vehicles, glass vessels of any kind are prohibited. Also, music must be kept at a low volume per the city’s noise ordinance, and you’ll need to provide a standard PA system adaptor to hook up your smartphone and play your favorite tunes. Lastly, don’t forget to tip your driver, since gratuity is usually not included in the cost of the rental.

These days, guests travel far and wide for weddings, so make it worth their while and show them a good time. “A bride and groom are now hosting weekends in destination cities to allow their guests to experience the area,” says Austin Wright, events manager at Telfair Museums. “From cornhole tournaments to wildlife boat tours, guests can expect more than just a ceremony and reception—it makes the wedding a more memorable experience.”

Couples are even creating fun experiences at the event itself, says Alysse Sweeney of Design Studio South in Savannah. For example, instead of passing out pralines as guests depart, Sweeney suggests inviting River Street Sweets to make pralines at the reception for an interactive experience guests won’t forget—and that they can take home with them. As for wedding favors, Sweeney says to make sure they are usable or edible, like a koozie to keep drinks cold or a cookie with your wedding hashtag on top.

One way to truly capture the moment is with a wedding reception photo booth. All About You Entertainment’s Jeff Brown has a range of photo booth options, including an open-air booth that can fit up to 10 to 12 people ... and all the costumes, hats and props they can carry. Brown adds each photo strip to an album, allowing guests to leave a snapshot and a little message for the bride and groom.

Many couples add an itinerary to their welcome bags, sharing their favorite local places to eat, drink, shop and explore. Make it interactive by turning the weekend into a scavenger hunt— the guest who completes the most activities wins a prize.

When deciding on your honeymoon destination, consider first what type of travel appeals to you and fits your budget, says Carolyn LeFleur, leisure travel advisor at Four Seasons Travel in Savannah. Are

“Honeymooners and travelers in general are more focused on experiences,” LeFleur says. “Younger generations are planning trips around experiences they really enjoy, like hiking or horseback

riding, which dictates the location of their honeymoon.”

How long you have to spend on your honeymoon will further narrow your location choices, according to LeFleur, as you want to avoid any trips with an extended amount of travel time. The Caribbean continues to be a much sought-after destination for Southern honeymooners, particularly for its close proximity and direct flights.

THE RISE OF THE MINI MOON

Many couples are now electing to postpone their honeymoon and instead have a “mini moon,” or a shorter honeymoon at a local destination where they’ll spend a few days together right after the wedding. From the Lowcountry to the Golden Isles, there are myriad options for a quick getaway after your wedding. The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island hosts many honeymooners, says Bud St. Pierre, the resort’s director of sales and marketing. The resort offers individual beach residences ideal for honeymooners who want a private respite with a beautiful view. The Beaufort Inn, located in Beaufort’s historic downtown, is another popular option, says Lindsay Blackmon of The Beaufort Inn, as it is conveniently located near the riverfront and downtown restaurants, art galleries and shops.

Note the time between your wedding and honeymoon departure—and your inevitable level of fatigue. “A wedding is exhausting, no matter how much time and effort you’ve put into planning it,” LeFleur says. “I suggest that couples may want to think about waiting 24 hours before leaving for the honeymoon as you don’t want to spend your first day exhausted.” If your trip requires a passport, make sure your travel documents are up to date.

When traveling to some countries, TSA prohibits travelers from boarding their flight if their passport expires within six months of the trip. Visit tsa.gov to understand all regulations and ensure smooth sailing for you and your partner through security and on to your honeymoon destination.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE

Savannah is a treasure trove of creative talents—and when a group of driven and talented friends find themselves around the same dinner table, a collaborative project is never far off. This styled shoot emerged from the realization that all the necessary elements to design a wedding could be found within our community of friendships that started in art school. The project took form over weeks of discussion and mood boards, and we developed a shared aesthetic: moody hues, eclectic textiles and accessories. These images reflect a dream wedding of sorts, an occasion we hope to someday share with a real Lowcountry bride. —MALLORY MORAN

outhern Coastal Weddings covers some of the most beautiful geography in the world.

Though each highlight of the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire bears its own distinctive mark, they share certain signatures: stately oaks draped with romantic Spanish moss, preserved historic structures and a cultural reverence for the art of hospitality.

Beaufort, South Carolina, in upper Beaufort County, is awash with romance and history, a quintessential small Southern town. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, where even the gas stations have a posh patina. This island is an ode to meticulously planned high-end residences and manicured golf courses all coming together with understated elegance.

Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister—an eclectic community with an artist’s soul.

Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia.

Savannah’s massive historic district and tree-filled squares are top-of-mind when it comes to planning a wedding here, but Savannah-area brides are spoiled for choice—beach weddings on Tybee Island, historic venues well away from the bustle of the city, and even rustic farm settings make the Hostess City a versatile site for any celebration.

An hour or so south you’ll find Glynn County, Georgia, home of the Golden Isles—Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island, plus the mainland town of Brunswick, which boasts a picturesque historic district. It’s easy to see why these islands inspired poet Sidney Lanier’s famed “Marshes of Glynn”—they offer an array of wedding venues, from elegant and exclusive villas to earthy, exquisite driftwood beaches.

St. Simons Island beaches do not require reservations or permits for weddings; for weddings on Jekyll Island beaches, you’ll need to inform the Jekyll Island Authority at 912.635.6400.

GOLDEN ISLES:

No dogs allowed on the beach at any time (or you’ll face a $290 fine plus court costs).

TYBEE:

GOLDEN ISLES: On Jekyll Island, dogs are allowed on Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island Beach and Great Dunes Park but must be leashed. On St. Simons Island, dogs are allowed on East Beach and Massengale Park (no leash required) but prohibited between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. during June, July and August.

HILTON HEAD: Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach, but are prohibited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
