FOOTBALL
The Hornets had a strong season after moving up two classifications to AAA this off-season under second-year Head Coach John Mohring. After losing a large senior class and only having two seniors for the 2022 season, the Hornets finished 5-5 and 5th in the Region. The Hornets played a tough schedule and were competitive in most games. They were able to play the role of the spoiler as they beat Johnson late in the season to knock them out of play-off contention. The young team is already looking ahead to 2023 and continued growth. All Region AAA honors included 1st Team Phil Ajayi (OL), Rooster Bing (DL), Michael Grandy (RB), Cash Ramirez (K), Tyler Scott (LB), and Josh Washington (WR); 2nd Team Athon Herrin (P), Keith James (WR), and Brooks Kleinpeter (DL); and Honorable Mention John Avino (OL), Barton Mixon (QB), and Boone Wiesner (TE). The Savannah Morning News All-Greater Savannah honors included 2nd Team Phil Ajayi, Rooster Bing, Michael Grandy, Cash Ramirez, and Josh Washington. Honorable Mentions were Athon Herrin, KJ James, and Brooks Kleinpeter.

Flag Football

Girls’ flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, and the SCDS team had an exciting second season. The Hornets were part of the very competitive GHSA Division 1 (Class A-4A) and earned the program’s first berth in playoffs. The team was led by three seniors Phil-Isabelle Ajayi, Katie Horne, and Maria Miller, who were founding members of the program. The Hornets finished the season with a record of 9-4. The defense, led by rusher Anna Shelton, held nine opponents scoreless. Shelton recorded 21 sacks on the season. The offense was led by quarterback Sofia Pablo, running back Eva Beauchamp, and receiver Parker Hall. The team’s most impressive win came against crosstown rival, Savannah Christian Prep (33-0) where Pablo threw for four touchdowns and Beauchamp recorded a pick-six on defense. The coaches and players are excited about continuing to grow this fast-paced and competitive sport at our school. Homecoming
Country Day is tremendously grateful for the overwhelming financial support received over the past several years to support the completion of Invest in Excellence Phase I: Academics. The school year kicked off with the opening of Mingledorff Hall, the 32,000 sq. ft. STEM building that houses all Upper School math and science classes, an energy lab and makerspace, and numerous mixed-use spaces for collaborative work and individual study. Planned renovations for two additional Upper School buildings, Minis Hall and Livingston Hall, are also underway. The Minis building will be expanded to include 12 humanities classes, two conference rooms, and a common space for students. The Livingston renovation will elevate our student support programs by providing a dedicated space in the center of campus for our Middle and Upper School learning support and our Upper School counseling department. The new space will include seven student-teacher collaboration spaces, offices for our faculty, and flex areas to be configured for different learning structures.
