I’m a former rapper (look up “Wombstretcha the Magnificent”). This means that in addition to knowing what the hell Ol’ Dirty Bastard was actually talking about, I’ve been exposed to a plethora of unconventional slang terms for various things. The entire hip-hop community seems to thrive on having different, possibly complex-seeming words to replace the standard vernacular. The following are some of the more colorful terms for dollars and cents, found in the world of rap music.

The first section is the common, less specific-to-rap terms. You might already use these, since they’re not specific to any group.

You know, standard stuff. This next 10 are more obscure terms, generally found only in hip-hop circles, but there might be overlap elsewhere.

And now, the last ten, which are both odd and delightfully atrocious, like rap itself tends to be. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say these things in person, ever. Not even rappers I’ve met. Yet, they’re in rap songs.

Finally, this last section is a mix-up. Some are legit weird terms that have been heard in rap songs, and some are completely made up. Try and guess which are made up and which are real.

1. Sodium 2. Fish sticks 3. Alakazam 4. Boodle 5. Mazuma 6. Frog skins 7. Abba-zabbas 8. Box tops 9. Quiche 10. Doubloons

The real ones are 100% real, as in they’ve been used in at least one mainstream rap track. The fake ones have not been used, ever, in any rap tracks I could find. So, use all your hip-hop powers and abilities to tell which ones come correct, and which ones are mark-ass bustas.
