Sun

by Rachel Lovelace

The sun shines in the sky

cheerfully illuminating the purple violets

on the window sill and the courtyard below my window.

The light stings my eyes as it shows me life

hurrying by outside.

I shrink back; the vivid light hurts.

I wonder if the Sun is as happy as it appears.

Maybe the Sun is just going through

the motions behind a happy facade,

only shining because like breathing

and getting out of bed the morning, it's merely a habit,

done in an effort to eclipse the deadness within.
